White House Chief of Staff: 'Certain People in the Media...Carry the Water' for Obama's Opponents

President Obama once again showed a thin skin on Thursday by accusing Fox News's Ed Henry of being Mitt Romney's spokesperson.

CNBC's John Harwood asked White House Chief of Staff William Daley about this the following day, and Daley responded, "There are certain people in the media who do seem at times to carry the water for certain piece of the political spectrum" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JOHN HARWOOD, CNBC: Yesterday at a press conference one of my colleagues asked the president to respond to something Mitt Romney said. The president said, "I didn't realize you were a spokesman for Mitt Romney." Is the White House-- you feeling-- the president feeling under siege from events right now?

WILLIAM DALEY, OBAMA CHIEF OF STAFF: No, I mean, look at the-- the-- since the day the President came in the-- to this office the-- the economy of the world has been in trouble. The U.S. economy was-- we were losing 750,000 jobs a month the first month he was in office. And the pace picked up based upon the problems that had had-- 4 million Americans had lost their jobs the year before he came into office. So-- he came in and from day one the middle class has been under siege. And the middle class has been under siege for many, many years.

JOHN HARWOOD: Why would the president respond that way to a reporter though?

WILLIAM DALEY: Well, I don't think it was a colleague from your network, I think--

JOHN HARWOOD: No.

WILLIAM DALEY: --but a colleague from another network. And-- sometimes as you-- I know it may surprise people, some people that there are certain people in the media who do seem at times to carry the water for certain piece of the political spectrum.

Isn't it fascinating that an administration that has gotten better press coverage than probably any before it is constantly complaining about any dissent from the media?

Of course, it really is the press's fault for treating this man like a messiah from the moment he tossed his hat into the presidential ring in February 2007.

If they had actually vetted him like any other candidate, he and his staff wouldn't believe it deserved such fawning treatment.

On the other hand, if the press had done their job in 2007 and 2008, Obama would still be the junior senator from Illinois.

And certain press will not be bullied in the Chicago Way, Daley.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 10/15/2011 - 4:48pm.

You and your daddy may have run the Chicago machine, but you are no longer IN Chicago, Billy. Get over it.

And the implication that the press carries somebody's water, let's just say every major network except Fox has filled a few oceans for you and your dumbbell boss.

Bill Daley is perfect to play

Submitted by jkwtrading on Sat, 10/15/2011 - 11:58am.

Bill Daley is perfect to play this position. he is a power hungry man...his appearance, responses will do more to undercut obama than help him.
Of the two brothers Richie and Bill, Richie had a personality Bill has zero, cold, lifeless, calculating. In Chicago , Bill rarely if ever spoke, Richie always carried the message.

  • Daley responded, "There are certain people in the media who do seem at times to carry the water for certain piece of the political spectrum"

That's true. There are a few people - certain people - do indeed carry the water for their agenda on the right. I'm not too sure that Ed Henry is one of them;  Sean Hannity - sure.  Megyn Kelly - why not? etc.

However, amongst the national media outlets, and their thousands of journalists, researchers, editors, reporters, correspondents, anchors, and producers; these are the masses which consistently  - not just at certain times - carry the water for the whole of the Democratic machine, the Obama White House, the activist left, etc.

Find me a national journalist, who in the light of CNN's national polling which found that 67% of the country support the House Republican's passed Cut, Cap and Balance Bill, asked of this White House, or of the Democratic leadership - why they were not willing to consider such a populist measure. Heck, find a national MSM outlet that was willing to even report on the poll results and offer up any sort of discussion on it.

It was censored from public view, buy the broad and powerful MSM. This is their MO. The fewer voters who realize that they are in the majority, the better it is for the left's agenda.

and there's a key difference between Sean Hannity and others in the media, besides the fact that he's usually right; Sean Hannity is honest about his political leanings, he doesn't try to claim he's unbiased, he openly and proudly admits he's a conservative.

Boy Barry has GOT to be the most petulant, immature, classless, shameless, 'manini' (Hawaiian for 'small'..........as in any definition you want to use it on) person to EVER reach such a high political office - in a business that is full of characters that exhibit such behaivior, I can't think of anyone who can match him. He is the biggest embarrassment this country has ever presented to itself, or the rest of the world.

And I'm pretty sure that his handlers and backers know it, and that is why they continue to make statements like the one that Daley just made.

Nice try at deflection. Why didn't you actually answer the question?

"you know it may surprise people, some people that there are certain people in the media who do seem at times to carry the water for certain piece of the political spectrum."

So, the President is free to accuse a journalist of being a spokesmen because "certain people" are accused of bias because they asked a question about another candidate? Is THAT Obama's reasoning? If you even ask about another candidate, you're biased?

Submitted by robert108 on Sat, 10/15/2011 - 3:01pm.

What happened was that the reporter asked obama a simple question, and instead of giving an honest answer, he tried to bully the questioner. Daley is just continuing the bullying tactics of the Dems. This country is a representative Republic, wherein issues are debated in an ongoing dialogue between opposing views, but obama and his crew don't seem to like that process, and are always trying to get around it with bullying and verbal trickery.

Noel, I love you man and you usually are spot on, but PROBABLY?

Nah, I just would have went with "WITHOUT QUESTION has gotten better press coverage than any before, yet it is constantly complaining about the media".

Fact is, it usually is Fox, BUT sometimes Jake Tapper or someone else steps off the plantation and asks a tough question and they get all pissed then also, just a little more respectable about it.

Submitted by killa37 on Sat, 10/15/2011 - 10:34pm.

Well, that 1% has been ruining everything for the 99% lately, right?? Just ask the fleabaggers.........hell, I went back to my truck the other day, after shopping at the nearby supermarket - and I had some flyer on my windshield.........and I hadn't been in the store for very long. And I looked around, and all of the cars were 'tagged' with these flyers.............and it was that 1%/99% propaganda, and where to go and what to do and bla bla bla. And I live on a small island here - out in the boonies!!! But there are a lot of rich mainland elitist libs around here - they can afford the cost of living here, whereas people like me actually got what we have before the place went off the charts, and it's a non-stop struggle for us.

Anyway, I was looking all over the parking lot so that I could find the nimrod who put this on my truck, just so I could wad it up and throw it into his face, with a few choice words from the killa............but I couldn't find him. Damn...............

Submitted by buddyc on Mon, 10/17/2011 - 2:16pm.

All the people who have compared Obama to Jimma Carter have been wrong. You should compare him to the paranoid Richard Nixon. Although it is close Nixon is a close second to Carter as the worst Presidents in history. Nixon viewed the media as a real "enemy" that had to be fought and beaten. In this regard Obama has the same attitude but only as to Fox because ONLY Fox dares report anything negative about Obama.
