New Season of 'Glee' to More Aggressively Target Conservatives

By Noel Sheppard | September 19, 2011 | 18:53

Noel Sheppard's picture

The hit television series "Glee" has never been shy about its disdain for conservatives.

According to Britian's The Independent, folks on the right will find the new season even more offensive:

A third series, which starts in the US on Tuesday, and in the UK shortly afterwards, will feature the storyline of an attempt by high school PE teacher Sue Sylvester to run for the US Congress. Controversially, given Sylvester's pantomime villain status, Glee's influential profile among young viewers and the impending 2012 election, her bid will be built on an exaggeratedly conservative platform, so satirising the Republican right.

For those unfamiliar, the part of Sue Sylvester is played by Jane Lynch who while hosting Sunday's Emmys took a cheap shot at the Tea Party.

As such, Sylvester the conservative will certainly not be at all flattering to the Right:

The first episode sees her appear on TV news to endorse a favoured policy of the Tea Party movement: the abolition of the National Endowment for the Arts, a US government subsidy beloved of liberals.

Later in the same programme, she suffers an indignity that befell Michele Bachmann and Newt Gingrich, two Republican presidential hopefuls: a "glitter bomb" attack, in which opponents video themselves throwing glitter at Sylvester, before uploading footage of the incident to YouTube. [...]

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, she revealed that her character will be campaigning on the "Sue Sylvester American Liberty" ticket, and suggested the plot would play off the Republicans, saying: "She's going to be more right-wing than Michele Bachmann."

Oooh. I'm all atingle.

Of course, NewsBusters readers are well aware of "Glee's" history of conservative bashing.

Vulgarian comedienne Kathy Griffin guest starred in a March episode wherein she mocked Sarah Palin while depicting Tea Partiers as homophobic birthers.

This wasn't the first time the show went after the former Alaska governor, for it did so in April 2010 as well.

The show has also attacked conservative author Ann Coulter as well as talk radio's Glenn Beck.

With this in mind, the perilously liberal Lynch portraying a conservative politician can't be something that will put a smile on right-thinking Americans.

The show is counting on the idiots that tune in not to think for themselves. Anyone can readily find what the Tea Party's platform is with just a few clicks of a mouse.

I guess the Glee producers don't really think much of their viewers since they're easily brain-washed with the latest left-wing lies and propaganda.

Strictly from a marketing

Submitted by Reaver on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 7:30pm.

Strictly from a marketing point of view it doesn’t make much sense to insult and alienate anywhere from one third to one half of your potential audience. My friends always say that all Hollywood cares about is money so they won’t get too political but I think that more and more they have convinced themselves that conservatives are a small fringe minority and insulting them does no harm.

rap lately. I wonder how many people do support the tea party postiions these days. I have heard it is only half of republicans. That is a very small group that is unlikely to watch this horrible show.

I do notice that when the shows get too political they stop being entertaining. It will be interesting to see if this change up is also the same season they "jump the shark" . TV shows are living shorter and shorter lives these days. I'll be happy when this is gone.

I'd like to thank Hollywood for renewing my interest in reading.

Lipton, are you old enough to remember the Smothers Brothers?

Submitted by Newsbubba on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 8:01pm.

They had a pretty good comedy/variety show on TV that was doing quite well.

Then they became very political, much like the liberals of today, and began to lace every show with their brand of liberal hate (I know.  Liberals don't hate).

In very short order the show lost tons of viewers who just got tired of their very unfunny rants.  Whether you thought like them or not, the show just wasn't very funny anymore.

Long story short, they got canceled in short order, and became the Smothers who? in a few short years.

Glee is going to go the same way.  It was a pretty entertaining musical and comedy show, but it lost it fast for me.  Hell, even my wife doesn't watch it anymore, and she was a huge fan.  The political crap went right over her head, but she didn't think it was as funny for some reason.

Too bad.  There are some pretty talented people on the show, but piss your audience off at your own peril.  You could wind up as successful as the NY Times, NPR, etc.

I've never watched Glee...because if i did then I would be an idiot...because apparently only idiots watch it. But you are correct, even idiot viewers will eventually get their fill of the rampant liberality and stop watching. People want entertainment, not a political statement.

My wife watches it as well, but I did not take offense to the "idiot" statement. If you like musicals, you'll like this show. I don't like musicals, or even much music for that matter. My wife was actually in a glee club in high school, which explains her attraction to the show.

I am interested in seeing how my wife responds to the bashing her beliefs as she is more conservative than I am on some issues, specifically morality issues. I'm more of a libertarian or 10th Amendment conservative and she is more on the religious right.

As for this show alienating half its audience, I don't see that as an issue as most conservatives are like me and don't have any interest or the time for musicals. We are more logical thinkers. It makes no sense to us to see people break into a song and dance routine in the middle of their day-to-day activities. Musicals are made for the emotional. That's not meant to be an insult, just the way I see it.

Submitted by David N MO on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 10:23pm.

Yeh, I remember the Smothers brothers. I was rather young, but I loved it and I remember it... And everybody my age remembers them.
And you're flat out wrong. They weren't shut down because of low ratings. They were shut down by the PTB because they voiced their politics in their songs and skits. Don't forget an unpopular war was going on...

I discovered GLEE and was fascinated with their music. There wasn't ever much to the story, so I recorded the show and would skip to the music. Some of the shows were really good, however this last season turned into a gay fest... It's one thing to defend someone, but promote it and i'll turn the channel.

Lipton, I bet over 50% of the country support the "limited government, stop wasting my money" position of the Tea Party. One way to see the over-sampling of liberals in recent polls is to look at the number of people who rated it unfavorably. Only the most hardcore, fringe lefty nutjobs are still in favor of the get-nothing-for-it, pouring-money-down-the-drain policies of this administration.

a recent poll said about 1/2 the republicans support the tea party, and the MSM used that to say 1/2 opposed it's policies. No where in the poll was that asked. I've seen polls on individual topic, from taxes to gun rights to regulation, that show that the majority of all Americans support "tea party positions."

Unfortunately, the "Tea Party" is so demonized by the left and the MSM, that people don't know whether to support the "movement."  But the "positions?"  Definitely supported by most.

The bigger problem with Glee, and the reason it should be forced to have a underage child notification (seriously), is that it's being used as a propaganda machine to influence the squishy minds of our young.

If you keep drumming into the minds of 13-16 year olds that conservatives are evil, by the time they can vote, they probably believe it.  It is communist style tactics, at best.

But having liberal tripe injected as part of their mindless entertainment is the very definition of brainwashing, and how socialism spreads. Bad ideas, but good intentions, simple lies, shifting "normal" to the left, little by little.

Leading The Show To The Slaughter

Submitted by rammingspeed on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 7:59pm.

Glee has lost a significant part of its audience directly because of creator Ryan Murphy's headlong push with his extreme - and quite vicious - political and social messaging. He's been told this in no uncertain terms by professionals in the business, and Glee's ratings plunge is his obvious, unchallengeable message.

I think Murphy knows full well that he's killing his show, and doesn't care. In fact, he's doubling down on his Socialist Realism art crusade. This is his chance to reach the millions of high school kids who are still watching. He's indoctrinating them, creating more voters for the manically leftist democratic party. The door is closing, but he'll push it to the end, like a good comrade. It's for the cause. He's set for life, what's the worry? He's hurting - in some cases destroying - the careers of the poor kids in the cast, but there's more important things, ya know?

Murphy represents the darkest minds, most wicked souls of the activist/agitators on the left. His hatred knows no bounds. He is utterly without civility or decency when he goes after something. And he cracks on the character of corporate big shots.

There is a particular class of gay activist, not all gays by any means, that seems to stew itself in bitter hatred of anything that smacks of traditional values. I'm sure part of it is self-loathing externalized into presumed rejection, so it feeds on itself. And it has no governor; it oscillates out of control and they strew their rhetoric with wishful statements of violent acts they imagine they'd like to commit (except that conservatives tend to hit/shoot back).

You are no doubt right that Murphy knows he's going to tank his show this season and doesn't care. I'm equally sure Lynch isn't aware of the suicidal nature of the mission and might not be so eager to trash her regular paycheck; but she has a political hobbyhorse to ride and no one can tell her not to hop aboard and say "Giddap!" I'm sure she thinks that the conservatives in her audience are a very minor influence and in any event, the kids love her and will watch anyway. She might want to consider that conservatives tend to be a lot more concerned about what kind of media diet is being fed to their kids and by announcing this agenda with a bullhorn, the parents might be inclined to exercise some control.

In any event, I'd bet they are off the air by January if they try. Look for re-runs of "Human Target" or "Bones" in that time slot in the not too distant future.

The ratings are dropping. A lot. I loved the first season of Glee. I am a total sucker for Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly movies. After I got over the novelty of singing and dancing in Glee, I started noticing content. I really want to enjoy the show, but I don't. It's almost painfully slanted. The ratings will continue to fall. If they removed the agenda, it'd be a great show.

As always with liberals,

Submitted by johnsonl on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 6:33am.

since they can't get us to pay attention to their message through normal channels, they bury it in school lessons, college courses and popular culture. They are desperate for attention and will sacrifice the content in order to promote the liberal agenda. The MSM has miserable ratings and would be washed up save for Soros' financial support. He won't live forever.
You're absolutely right. If they removed the liberal/socialist/gay agenda, the ratings would increase. We want to be entertained, not brainwashed.

The answer to your question is simple. Unlike NBC, Comcast and GE. Rupurt Murdoch understands making money with a variety of different shows is more important than political statements

It's the PRINCIPLE that is important, and the interest :-)

I enjoy the show and cheap shots to conservatives don't happen very often. The musical numbers and the majority of the cast are fun to watch.

Glee reminds me of everything

Submitted by redfish on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 12:13am.

Glee reminds me of everything bad about high school. Most kids didn't involve themselves in school activities like glee clubs... those that did tended to be over-achievers who were also into school politics, cared about being popular, were into "teen spirit" nonsense, and preachy liberal activism. They made any student who was right-of-center feel uncomfortable.

Of course, from shows like Glee and movies like Easy A you would think that overzealous religious kids are the biggest annoyance in high school. Yea, ok.

I don't think the producers of Glee realize that any Tea Party members or sympathizers actually watch their silly show. As a man, I've not been tempted once to watch a musical for my political rhetoric.

My wife LOVES this show to the point that she has bought all of the music from it off iTunes. I do my best to find something else to do when it's on. She doesn't seem to find any of the material questionable or offensive but it doesn't take long to see which way the wind blows on that set.

Submitted by felizagain on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 1:37pm.

The 'kids' are getting older. How long can you make 20-somethings look 16 or 17? The 'charm' is wearing off a bit.
Glee is a show the industry loves, Ellen, and a segment of the viewing audience. But, the first two season were probably
the high points.

Sylvester is a popular character because she's saying what a lot of the viewers are thinking anyway.

Like Deseperate Housewives and Modern Family, multi-millionaire writers and producers and actors who happen to be gay,
remind the nation how terrible it is to be gay in America....you only become famous, wealthy, and popular. Darnit.

Libs - they double down on stupidity

Submitted by Evil Klown on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 2:57pm.

The libs can flail all they want ... their time is over ... finished ... done. Even though their tactics started sputtering years ago, they never learn so they just increase their efforts. Reminds me of a monkey in Chinese handcuffs.

My guess is they're not only on the way out but they're going to STAY out ... probably for generations. Adios, jackasses. But please, feel free to keep braying about how stupid conservatives are.

Submitted by WhatTheHuh on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 3:48pm.

Anyone of voting age who allows their political beliefs to be shaped by a television show shouldn't be voting, but what are you going to do? This is the system we have.

Shows like Glee can do anything they want to try to sway voters, but ultimately it won't work. People live in the real world and aren't going to blame the Tea Party over the President and Congress when they look at the sad state our country is in. Obama is going to lose in 2012, so Hollywood better come to grips with that. It's okay, Hollywood, after the 2012 elections you will have the Republicans to blame once again. :)

FOLKS...THIS IS REAL SIMPLE....

Submitted by thescoots on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 5:22pm.

quitting Hollywood is like quitting smoking....you have to get past the aggravation of that silly craving. Its not that hard.......really. In fact....I am a double survivor...I have done both. I have managed to quit smoking ....and, quit feeding Hollywood my money.....Which they gladly take, and give to democrats...who in turn, use it against me. If you go to Yellowstone Park....there are signs everywhere that say: DON'T FEED THE BEARS!....Likewise, folks.....don't feed Hollywood....no movies, no dvd's...no premium television channels (like HBO) until they reform. Thank you.....and have a nice day.
