Gregory: 'Republicans Have Been Talking About' Getting the Jewish Vote for Years - 'It Never Happens'

By Noel Sheppard | September 18, 2011 | 18:11

NBC's David Gregory clearly isn't hearing any alarm bells from what happened in New York's ninth Congressional district Tuesday.

When Republican strategist Alex Castellanos mentioned Sunday that Jews believe President Obama is more pro-Palistiniaan than pro-Israel, the "Meet the Press" host responded, "Republicans have been talking about the Jewish vote going Republican for a long time. It never happens" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

DAVID GREGORY, HOST: What you're also seeing on the Republican side, Alex, is a special election.

ALEX CASTELLANOS, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: Yeah.

MR. GREGORY: Anthony Weiner's district that went to a Republican, and the back and forth, whether you can nationalize these results. What do you take away from that?

MR. CASTELLANOS: Interesting, two special elections. The one in Nevada tells you something. This was an election that a district that McCain won by 88 votes, a Republicans just won it by 20 percent. Those are numbers like Virginia where--elected Republican governor, like in New Jersey where Chris Christie won, where Scott Brown won. Again, that's kind of a seismic shift. And in New York, President Obama was a huge factor and so was the economy. About 40 percent of the voters there said that their vote was a vote to send Obama a message. Some of them were Republicans, but some were Democrats trying to help their president and save their president and tell him he needs to get going on the economy. But the big news here is that there's trouble now for Obama within his base. His base, he has economic concerns, but now he also has foreign policy concerns. Jewish voters are concerned that he is, I think, 15 to 45 more pro-Palestinian than he is pro-Israeli.

MR. GREGORY: Right. But Republicans have been talking...

MR. CASTELLANOS: In that district.

MR. GREGORY: ...about the Jewish vote going to Republicans for a long time. It never happens. So that may be...(unintelligible). I want to talk about Rick Perry, however.

MR. CASTELLANOS: Until last--until this week.

MR. GREGORY: Yeah, well, we'll see.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Actually, we just did. As the American Thinker's Richard Baehr noted Sunday:

Since voters do not register their religion and ballots are secret, estimates of how Jews voted on Tuesday is guesswork. The Brooklyn section of the district, which is estimated to have a higher Jewish percentage and a higher Orthodox Jewish percentage than the district as a whole, voted about 2 to 1 for Turner, while Weprin won a much smaller majority (about 5%) in the larger Queens portion of the district. Overall, it appears that Turner may have won a small majority of all Jewish voters.

So much for "It never happens."

Gregory must have also missed this piece at Politico Friday:

President Barack Obama’s support among Jews has dropped, new data shows.

Four out of 10 Jewish Americans currently disapprove of Obama, according to polling data provided to POLITICO by Gallup, which has yet to post the numbers on its website.

This 40 percent disapproval rating is 8 percent higher than the 32 percent disapproval rating among Jewish Americans that was last reported by Gallup in June.

While Obama still remains popular with Jews, the data, from a poll conducted Aug. 1-Sept.14, is the latest concrete indication that the president is facing worsening problems among a key group.

Even someone like CNN's Jack Cafferty heard the warning bells publishing the following at his blog Thursday:

The Democrats' loss in New York's special congressional election this week could signal serious trouble for Obama and the Jewish vote in 2012.

District 9, made up of parts of Brooklyn and Queens, is one of the most Jewish in the nation. And many believe that if the Democrats lost there, Obama could be in jeopardy in key states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. It's nearly impossible to win a presidential election without those states.

The problem is, a lot of American Jews feel neglected by this president and think he has been too tough on Israel.

Apparently, none of that matters to Gregory. As far as he's concerned, Obama's got the Jewish vote in the bag.

Yeah, well, we'll see.

Let's talk facts here.......

Submitted by Herbster on Sun, 09/18/2011 - 6:25pm.

The present occupant of the White House is pro palestinian and anti-Israel. The angry wife; Ditto. The present occupant of the White House has not pressured Abbas to give up his "Statehood" idea which has painted the occupant into a corner. Veto statehood (Which he will have our incompetent UN delegate do) and the arabs will hate this person even more. He'll go to the UN, with teleprompters, give a vacuous speech and then go play golf. The state run media will praise the speech as the greatest oratory they ever heard........and the Republicans are holding up the "Jobs bill." Netanyhu is coming to visit......bet they won't televise any of the discussions between a true world leader and the present occupant. Netanyhu will clean his clock again. I'll sum it up......Little David Gregory is still a pimp!

At least they are supposed to say nothing until he is acting on instructions of his Government. Go back to exactly what he said and he did not say what you think you heard. That is his function to be pleasant and to convey diplomatic messages that are two steps up on the gobly gook ladder from contract law.

I think the average Jewish voter is like the average 'black' voter............they've been getting screwed for years by the people who purport to represent them - I guess they don't mind. Maybe they are starting to finally figure it out.

How about that phony-ass photo of Boy Barrystein with his yamaka touching the 'wailing wall', or whatever it's called!!!

One of my best friends is a Jew, and he is very intelligent until the subject turns to politics.

He still loves Obama!  How in the hell he does, I can't begin to fathom.

I point out that Bambi has all but delivered Israel to the Mooooooooooslems, and he says, (this is no Shiite!!) "but He's trying sooo hard."

I just can't even think of a response.  I sometimes think that there are some Jews who feel that it is their duty to be crapped on, or worse.  They are just not comfortable unless someone is kicking their ass.

I don't know.  Maybe you can 'splain it to me.

you've hit it on the nose, North. in fact I'd say MOST non-Orthodox Jews are more "liberal" than "Jewish." that's why they are able to keep supporting Obama even tho it's clear he dislikes our religion and the country of Israel as well.

it's sad...but I'm encouraged by reports like these. I think this could be the year the GOP gets, oh let's say half the Jewish vote. that would be HUGE. I think it'll make a difference in Florida, and that could make the difference in the election.

seriously? you don't know this? I will explain. the Jews of Europe had been so assimilated for so long in their countries that they simply could not believe they were in danger. German Jews thought of themselves as Germans.

this is the model for Jewish behavior that the world is comfortable with: Jews quietly going to be slaughtered. that's why Israel is so despised: Jews are defending themselves and that just can't happen!

The "Jewish Vote" will continue to go to Democrats, including

Submitted by Rush Fan on Sun, 09/18/2011 - 8:15pm.

President Barack Obama. As Norman Podhoretz pointed out in an article in the Wall Street Journal titled Why Are Jews Liberal?:

Since 1928, the average Jewish vote for the Democrat in presidential elections has been an amazing 75%—far higher than that of any other ethno-religious group.

To most Liberal Jews, as with most Liberals, their Liberal ideology supersedes everything, including their religious faith and their common sense.

As Dennis Prager correctly notes:

If you believe that leftist ideas and policies are good for America and for the world, then you are particularly pleased to know how deeply Jews -- with their moral passion, intellectual energies and abilities, and financial clout -- are involved with the Left. If, on the other hand, you believe that the Left is morally confused and largely a destructive force in America and the world, then the Jews' disproportionate involvement on the Left is nothing less than a tragedy -- for the world and especially for the Jews.

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 09/18/2011 - 8:17pm.

. . . It's a matter of how much of it goes Republican that can make all the difference in a state like Florida. If Jewish support for Obama drops from 75% to 50%, this may be enough to swing a state.

Impossible for me to understand...

Submitted by Rasmus on Sun, 09/18/2011 - 8:52pm.

how American Jews, who purport to love Israel, could vote in 2012 for a U.S. President who is so clearly anti-Israel. Seriously, I just can't understand this. They can be forgiven for voting for him in '08, because they were just part of the crowd that bought into the "hope and change" crap. There can be no excuse in 2012. I wonder if the Israeli government, or its people, will make any sort of plea to their American cousins for help?

It's not often

Submitted by pbthinker on Sun, 09/18/2011 - 11:02pm.

It's not often I agree with David Gregory, but I think I will on this one. This vote, in New York, was meant to send a message to the Democrats and Obama. FIrst of all, they had the wrong candidate, secondly, Obama's policies toward Israel are pathetic and lastly, the Republican will only be there for a little over a year, then they'll go back to business as usual.

I will agree that Nevada was much more significant, as far as a message is concerned. In fact, if I'm a Democrat, I'm in a panic right now. If we had a fair press in this country, I don't believe they could win an election. As it is, they're losing them now and the President's poll numbers are in the tubes, not because of the press, but in spite of the press.

It's going to be interesting to see what the Harvard Faculty Lounge can come up with for a plan this week. They've leaked the millionaires tax, but it will be interesting to see what assumptions are associated with that.

Vote Republican - Then you'll only be called a racist one more time.

5. NY-9 by 8%
There were others, but if after all those hits, they still think Obama is going to get a 2nd term. Then they are too divorced from reality, and when he UNEXPECTEDLY looses, they are going to be shocked.
