Pinkerton: 'There’s a Strange Thing Happening in the Media' - Liberals Have Concluded Obama's a 'Turkey'

By Noel Sheppard | September 17, 2011 | 16:33

Noel Sheppard's picture

As NewsBusters has been reporting, Barack Obama's sycophants in the press are really starting to lose that loving feeling.

Driving this point home was the "American Conservative's" Jim Pinkerton Saturday who said on "Fox News Watch," "There’s a strange thing happening in the media which is, I think, liberalism has sort of concluded that Obama is kind of a turkey, and they're sort of trying to distance themselves from him" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JIM PINKERTON: There’s a strange thing happening in the media which is, I think, liberalism has sort of concluded that Obama is kind of a turkey, and they're sort of trying to distance themselves from him. Carville is a great example of this. It's not that they’re Republicans, it’s not that they like Republicans any better. We'll get to that later. It’s that when you see, for example, Ron Suskind, who’s a well-known author, no conservative as far as I can tell, talking about what a feckless and ineffective economic policy President Obama has enacted. He can't even keep track of his own treasury secretary. Something is breaking loose in terms of the liberal lockstep.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Pinkerton was referring to a CNN.com op-ed written by former Clinton adviser James Carville Thursday in which the "Ragin' Cajun" surprisingly said:

People often ask me what advice I would give the White House about various things. Today I was mulling over election results from New York and Nevada while thinking about that very question. What should the White House do now? One word came to mind: Panic.

The Suskind reference was to an upcoming book by the author excerpted by the Washington Post Friday chronicling serious problems within Obama's economic team. But I digress:

JON SCOTT, HOST: You're getting nods from Judy here. You agree?

JUDITH MILLER: Yeah, I didn't expect to agree with Jim on this one, but I have to say that when you hear Ron Brownstein and other people say, “You know? This really raises questions about how effective a leader Obama.” Or the other thing I heard on Friday on “Morning Joe” quoting Chuck Todd as saying, asking, “Gosh - is he even serious about this American jobs bill? I mean, is this, is this not just a kind of political talking point?” There's something going on at the base.

National Journal's Ron Brownstein wrote Monday of the nation's "deepening doubts about President Obama’s economic agenda."

That's a lot of former Obama fans in one week concluding he's "kind of a turkey."

We shouldn't say "we told you so..."

Submitted by Rasmus on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 4:39pm.

But we did. I have an easier time understanding the far left loons loving Obama and wanting to believe he's this incredible leader, etc. I've never understood the masses of "normal people" who so wanted to believe in him, in the face of so many indications to the contrary. Now they're feeling buyers' remorse and starting to come around, first a few at a time, then more and more. It's one thing to be young and idealistic, but when the very fate of our nation (and perhaps the world) hangs in the balance, I wish more people would put some actual effort into understanding the issues vs. blindly accepting whatever's thrown in front of them by the populists.

As often as it takes to sink into the thick skulls of the genius voters who put this disaster in the Oval Office in the first place. If it can happen once, it can and will happen again.

very bad news

Submitted by Agnostic on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 9:24am.

If the liberal media actually is leaving President Obama this is very bad news. Because as you say it will happen again. Obama has done more for the left movement than any sitting President in such a short period of time and it is failing. The fact that the media are leaving Obama would mean that they are blaming the man and not the failed policies which means they will go back to their news rooms and college campuses and continue to spout the same failed ideas as a utopian dream.

I would much rather they support Obama to the end and perhaps then they would learn the failure of socialistic ideas.

Rasmus, Very well said. I

Submitted by Liberallies on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 7:30pm.

Rasmus,

Very well said. I get why Left wingers for this guy. But when supposedly reasonable individuals, Independents and Republicans voted for this guy, it baffles the mind.

However, we must understand what the media did. They destroyed Bush AND Bush did not defend himself, Conservatism or Republican party. A while back I heard Karl Rove that the one regret he and Bush's White House had was that they did not defend themselves from the constant attacks by the Left and media.

Also, don't forget that the USA has become a nation of a popularity contest. I remember once being at a bar and I was talking politics with a few friends. Strangers joined us and it was a lively, but respectful debate. At one point one guy asked me, "Why do you still support a President (Bush) when he only has 29% approval rating?!" I remember looking at him in disbelief and telling him, "My beliefs and support for a President are not based on how many supported him yesterday, support him today and will support him tomorrow." I went into the whole "Hitler enjoyed great popularity inside Nazi Germany. I made my point well, but it took a little bit to get a few of the individuals to understand that popularity does not matter.

I also believe it had to do with the, it was the "cool", "in" thing to do, vote for Obama. And believe me, this was not only amongst the young and dumb.

However, I know countless of people who have buyers remorse and are terrified at the thought of Obama being reelected, even though they voted for him the first time.

What I do not expect is any Liberal to vote for a Republican. As a Liberal friend of mine told me, "I don't like Obama anymore, but I will die before voting for a Republican"

by the way, there is another reason why Obama was elected. Republicans and Conservatives staying home and not voting. Towards election day and on election day I remember coming into sites like NB, Hotair, Townhall, and other conservative blogs and countless of posters admitting that they were not going to vote for McCain. instead they were going to stay home. I blame them for Obama's election as much as I blame those who voted for him!

High School

Submitted by Unsane on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 7:32pm.

The older I get, I think I see two kinds of people: those who absolutely loved high school and think adulthood should be an extension of it; and those who were so repulsed by the experience that they want to erase all traces of it from adulthood, and want something frigging REAL out of life.

Liberallies....I agree completely with your post. Obama had

Submitted by Rush Fan on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 8:14pm.

the support of the mainstream media, as well as Tom Hanks. Obama also had the support of the usual liberal groups of Blacks (95%) and Jews (78%)

I forgot to mention another group that voted for Barack Obama. The uninformed, misinformed, misguided and uneducated.

But the nomination of RINO John McCain as the Republican nominee clinched the election for Obama. Not only did he run a terrible campaign, but his stance on issues such as Global Warming and energy (banning drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) was no different than Obama and the Dems. Nevertheless, I was one who didn't stay home, but went to the polls, held my nose, and voted for the RINO.

Obama has less of a chance of being elected again. But with the Left still controlling our education system and the mainstream media, I worry that the uninformed, misinformed, misguided and uneducated. may again put him over the top.

I understand Liberals who will never vote Republican

Submitted by stunned on Sun, 09/18/2011 - 10:24am.

I am a Conservative and wouldn't vote for a Democrat in DC. (I did vote for a Democrat Sheriff in the last election who was a hands on guy, honest, cut crime and did it without a larger budget, and extended services to this Republican area for the first time in decades in a very blue county. He managed to piss off the Democrat County machine a number of times and the last two elections had a Democrat challenger in the primaries but won each election with a bigger and bigger percentage even as Republicans won on the county level.) Honesty wins every time.

In DC the party controls the policies and it doesn't matter if a liberal Republican or conservative Republican holds the seat, the same holds for the Democrats, the policies will be the policies of the party. Liberals will never vote for a Republican and Conservatives should never vote for a Democrat as that individual no matter how apppealing the individual candidate is (that is the reality).

The Tea Party scares libs in and out of the MSM because it is pushing the Republicans back to its base of limited government rather than "compromising" with the Dems on expanding government. Changing the policies of the Republican party (the Dems are a lost cause) is what Conservatives must fight for in the long run even if it means loosing a few seats along the way as RINO's go down.

Independents vote willy-nilly and the events in the weeks before an election decide the winner. Libs never point out the McCain was leading until the banking disaster hit less than 2 months before the election. People were angry, frightened and hundreds of thousands were loosing their jobs while the MSM never pointed out it was the Dems who blocked reforms for over 5 years because of their social justice philosophy. Sorry to say but elections are about what is going on at the moment for 1/3 of the electorate and that is why Obama is in so much trouble and the liberal political base knows it.

It can't possibly be that hard to connect the dots

Submitted by lrgon on Sun, 09/18/2011 - 1:52pm.

"I get why Left wingers [for this guy.] But when supposedly reasonable individuals, Independents and Republicans voted for this guy, it baffles the mind."

The phenomenon is called looking at the damage the other guy did syndrome.

Bush gave us war, bailouts, A FOUR TRILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT etc.

Maybe the independent saw the other Bush negatives like: torure, secret prisons, military commissions and said "maybe I'll give this Democrat a try? who knows why voters vote the way the do unless you ask them. Many that I have asked said they were conned by the Obama rhetoric.

Maybe the independent saw Bush throwing away our heritage like Habeas Corpus; saw Bush building a government survellance network to spy on Americans. Maybe they were worrried that this spy bureaucracy would one day put them in prison and torture them?

The independent probably voted with his gut and sensed that Bush's love of big government was diametrically opposed to his public persona as a little government Christian. After all Bush built Homeland Security into an agency that threatens American's constitutional liberties.

It's no wonder if Bush treats Christians, patriots, vets, Second amendment advocates, anti-amnesty voters, pro-lifers, etc. with such disdain that this special class of Americans that love their country are treated like "terrorists" by the very depressing and oppressive department Bush created with his "Patriot Act."

Look who we were offered: McCain a pro-amnesty, pro-abortion, big government high tax guy.

Those independents took the marxist for his word and voted for him because he said he would undo Bush's ugly agenda of war, torture and crony capitalism. They were wrong but until we do have a real choice instead of an echo, expect them to vote the way they do since the major media won't straighten them out on their poor voting habits.

Prince of Fools

Submitted by LarryG on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 12:11am.

Some people have the vocabulary to sum up things in a way you can understand them. This quote came from the Czech Republic. Someone over there has it figured out. We have a lot of work to do.

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president."

"The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.

The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."

Rush Fan,

Exactly, at the end, they will carry water for Obama. Does anyone really expect the NY Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, San Fran Chronicle, etc not to endorse President Obama for 2012?

As I have been told by my Liberal friends. They are disappointed by Obama, but not enough to vote for a Republican.

We must work to get the Republicans that voted for Obama, who stayed home and did not vote for McCain (I will never understand this mentality!) and for the Independents who voted for Obama.

that should concern us. They're a relatively small group. The people who bother me are those who call themselves Independents, you know, those who have no convictions and who change their minds at the slightest change. If Perry says "Social Security is a Ponzi scheme", they suddenly bolt back to Obama. They are as clueless as Obama and for some reason they are proud that they hold the balance of this country in sway. It's their vote that makes polls look like a see-saw. These are the ones who will vote for Obama again because the media persuades them to do that. These people cannot think for themselves and are easily convinced. They believe whatever they hear last and we have to hope it's a conservative who has the last word.

Submitted by Rasmus on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 7:14pm.

I have no problem with Independents (whether capital "I" or not). Not everyone fits neatly into the Democrat or Republican party's mold. I'm a conservative, and it so happens that the Repubs most often align with my beliefs much better than the Dems do, and so I vote Republican consistently. The ones that concern me are those who can't form an opinion until days before election day. Remember those "independent voters" they had on all the news shows just days, sometimes even hours before the polls opened? "I just can't seem to make up my mind, but I'm leaning..." Seriously? The campaigns start ~ 2 years before the elections; the nominees are announced months prior; and there are literally thousands of news reports, opinion columns, debates, ads, and statements by the candidates, and you can't make up your mind until you walk into the booth? It's scary, because apparently the balance between serious Libs and Conservatives is about even in this country today (unbelievable) and these wafflers are the voters who really decide elections.

That's exactly the kind of person I'm talking about. I doubt they even understand the rationale of their own muddled thought process. They are as likely to vote for Obama again for no reason other than they feel sorry for him, but you can be sure it will have nothing to do with competency or performance.

President Obama's election

Submitted by ThePickle on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 5:15pm.

President Obama's election NEVER had anything to do with his politics, his policies or his political positions.

It had nothing to do with his experience in either the private or public sector.

It had nothing to do with his ability to lead this nation neither real nor perceived, nor did it have to do with anything remotely resembling a "history of success". .

The election of Barrack Obama WAS about "a historic moment in this nations history" a phrase I heard ad nauseum in the fawning MSM.

Draw what conclusions you will about what was meant by it being a "historic moment"....

I know I have, and as I have said, it sure wasn't about his politics or political positions.

The media is scared...

Submitted by GregE on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 6:25pm.

Scared that if this first black president fails, that Americans will not look to a black candidate for decades to come. THEY are concerned with his skin color and his record, while calling racist everyone who is against his policies. It's an interesting scenario.

They are afraid it would keep a liberal black candidate out for decades, why? Because THEY would have that COLOR question in THEIR minds, while calling racist everyone who is against the policies.

But of course this only concerns them with a black liberal. Black conservatives, they'll continue to slam if one were to ever move to the front of the Republican pack. The only reason they say so little about Herman Cain now and don't have to show themselves, is that he's not a threat to them at this point. And you can bet your arse they are soooooooooooo glad he's not.

True, but it goes deeper than that

Submitted by lsudolemite on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 8:40pm.

Remember, the media MADE Obama, and they're all in. Obama is ENTIRELY a media creation and myth. Without them nobody would know who an obscure junior Illinois senator is today. They have poured every ounce of their scant credibility into crafting the Obama mythology (historic/supremely competent/most intelligent president ever, etc.) If Obama fails as a president, then the media has failed. They lose every last shred of credibility with the public after the unprecedented marketing job they undertook on his behalf. It's over for them.

For that reason they will never completely abandon him, the way economists will never abandon Keynes. To do so would be an astronomical admission of the failure of liberalism/progressivism, and an admission of their complicity in its promotion. So the lapdogs will dutifully do their master's bidding until the very end.

Submitted by dscott on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 7:03pm.

Obama admitted to the fraud, waste and abuse in Medicare. The primary reason for the need of a tax increase is due to INCOMPETENCE. In the business world, a manager who fails to monitor and control the process is deemed incompetent and fired.

The core of Progressivism is the government is supposed to run everyone’s lives better than they could individually in terms of efficacy via economy of scale. So even according to liberal standards Obama is a total failure as he by his managerial incompetence demonstrates he can not measure up to Progressive ideology which demands efficacy.

Submitted by MidAmerica on Sun, 09/18/2011 - 1:17am.

We must keep in mind that if obama looks to be a loser the Liberals will have to distance Liberalism away from obama in order to save Liberalism. In fact, a post President obama will be haunted not by Republicans but Liberals who must lay all the blame for failure at obama's feet and not on the policies of Liberalism.

However....

obama was not promoted as the first Liberal President but the first Black President. If Liberals are seen as too dissmissive of obama then they may anger the Blacks who support the democrats by 90%. If the Black vote became fractured the democrats would be seriously hampered to ever elect a Liberal President again.

Leftists throwing Obama under the bus

Submitted by ChuckySchmucky on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 8:22pm.

What's going on is that leftists see the writing on the wall -- Obama is a total failure and he's bringing down the entire radical left and sullying their twisted leftwing beliefs. And if they have to choose between Obama and their perverted beliefs, they'll dump Obama in a heartbeat.

For awhile, they were defending Obama and insisting that his radical agenda was working. They were going overtime with the propaganda, smearing his opponents as racist, greedy, violent, hateful, etc, etc, etc.

But none of that is working, they continue to get clobbered in blue districts and they know Obama is going down, and going down hard. But they don't want him to take them and their disgusting un-American agenda down with him.

So they're going to throw him under the bus.

It's going to be great sport to watch.

all that's really going on here, is the Media attempting to put some criticism on Obama, so in the future (during the election campaign blitz) they can go back to their water carrying for the DNC and claim they were "fair and balanced" by pointing to the softball critiques they're making now.

It won't be long until everyone in the MSM is back on the arse-kissing train. There will be nothing but fawning political advertisement supporting Obama for reelection in another month or two. Any complaints now are just tactical.
