Bill Clinton's Flight 93 Memorial Dedication Speech

As NewsBusters reported moments ago, there was a dedication Saturday in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, for the Flight 93 Memorial.

After former President George W. Bush addressed attendees, former President Bill Clinton immediately followed (video of full speech follows with transcript):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

WILLIAM J. CLINTON, 42ND PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: Before President Bush came up to speak, I asked him if he was having a hard time. And he said I was doing fine until I looked at you, all of you. Last night, Hillary came home after spending a day in New York. And her eyes were red because 10 years ago she was the senator representing those 343 firemen and nearly 900 people from Cantor Fitzgerald who died and all the others. As we remember what happened at the -- in New York, at the Pentagon, and here, all the rest of us have to honor those who were lost, to thank those who love them for keeping their memory alive, raising their children, and finding the strength to go on with your own lives.

I think we should also thank President Bush and those who served with him, Vice President Biden, President Obama, those who served with them, for keeping us from being attacked again. I thank them for that.

(APPLAUSE)

Speaker Boehner, I thank you and the members of Congress who are here and who have been in the Congress for the last 10 years trying to respond to the findings of the 9/11 commission and improve our ability to secure our homeland.

But here in this place we honor something more. I was very moved as you were when President Bush calmly recounted the facts of what happened with your loved ones over this field a decade ago. There has always been a special place in the common memory for people who deliberately, knowingly, certainly laid down their lives for other people to live.

President Bush is from Texas, and I sometimes think because I grew up in Arkansas that's the more important difference between us than our partisan differences.

(LAUGHTER)

CLINTON: But every child I grew up with was raised on a memory of the Alamo, the defining story of Texas. Why? Because those people knew they were going to die. But the time they bought and the casualties they inflicted in the cause of freedom allowed the whole idea of Texas to survive. And those who live there now to enjoy the life they do.

The first such great story I have been able to find that reminds me of all your loved ones, however, occurred almost 2,500 years ago. When the Greek king of Sparta facing a massive, massive Persian army took 300 of his finest soldiers to a narrow pass called Thermopylae. There were thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people. They all knew they were going to die. He told them that when they went. And the enemy said we're going to fill the air with so many arrows that it will be dark. And the Spartans said, fine, we will fight in the shade. And they all died.

But the casualties they took and the time they bought saved the people they loved. This is something different. For at the Alamo and at Thermopylae, they were soldiers, they knew what they had to do. Your loved ones just happen to be on a plane.

With almost no time to decide, they gave the entire country an incalculable gift. They saved the capitol from attack. They saved God knows how many lives. They saved the terrorists from claiming the symbolic victory of smashing the center of American government. And they did it as citizens.

They allowed us to survive as a country that could fight terror and still maintain liberty and still welcome people from all over the world from every religion and race and culture as long as they shared our values, because ordinary people given no time at all to decide did the right thing. And 2,500 years from now, I hope and pray to God that people will still remember this.

(APPLAUSE)

CLINTON: So, since I am no longer in office, I can do unpopular things.

(LAUGHTER)

CLINTON: I told the secretary of the interior, the head of your development program, that I was aghast to find out that we still need to raise $10 million to finish this place. And Speaker Boehner and I have already volunteered to do a bipartisan event in Washington.

Let's get this show on the road. Let's roll. Thank you and God bless you.

I actually thought this was a really awesome speech. Don't know why he came after Bush, but he was really good.

because he was a great President and it was Bush and his administration and the military serving under him that kept our country safe these past 10 years. Having said that. I thought Clinton had a very good speech as did Joe Biden. Makes you wish they could always be civil and kind and caring toward their fellow man. It makes them seem not so bad after all. They should always set an example to follow.

Spot on, Mr. Clinton!

Submitted by BoilerFan on Sat, 09/10/2011 - 9:55pm.

I've never really liked or respected Slick Willie very much, but in this case, I'll show him the respect he earned earlier today.

Simply put, former President Clinton (man, that almost hurts saying that) gave the best speech of the day. Of the three highest ranking dignitaries (i.e., Bush, Clinton and Biden), Clinton's speech was the only one that truly stirred my emotions. He emphasized the very thing that has always impressed me the most regarding the flight 93 passengers. With very little time to debate and discuss the potential consequences of their collective action, the private citizens and strangers joined together, gave it their all and saved God only knows how many lives of their fellow citizens in Washington, D.C.. Spot on, Mr. Clinton!

Good speech

Submitted by GregE on Sat, 09/10/2011 - 10:12pm.

Very good.

The passengers Flight 93 all died, but they prevented much, MUCH more than most people really stop to think about, and likely more than even they could have ever imagined.

We've always heard that Flight 93 was likely bound for the Capitol or the White House, and based on the other targets, it likely was. But ponder that deeper for a moment.............and think about a picture such as that. Think about that destruction, both physically and symbolically. And think about the ramifications of such a scenario.

Now.........without diminishing the significance of any of the other events and situations of that day, I believe that Flight 93 was the one that al Qaeda viewed as most important and that was planned to have delivered the most significant blow to our nation that day, and it would have..........yet when all was said and done, the passengers on that flight had ensured that it delivered the least.

I heard Clinton give this speech on the radio...

Submitted by NascarShizzle on Sat, 09/10/2011 - 10:26pm.

...and it was still a very powerful speech in hearing the words only. But when I saw the video, I was even more impressed in that Clinton doesn't have to use a teleprompter to get his message across. Had Obama given the exact same speech with his trusted teleprompter, he would have looked like he was watching a tennis match, with his head swiveling left and right...never forwards like Clinton. Kudos to Bubba for giving a great and moving speech. His talk came from his heart, and not from a writer.

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 09/11/2011 - 9:32am.

I know a lot of you are giving him kudos for a great speech and etc, and I suppose it was good, but I still have trouble reconciling one little thing.

Clinton was given THREE chances to apprehend/terminate bin Laden.  He squandered every one of them.

Would this have prevented 9/11?  Probably so but I'm not really sure and at least bin Laden would have been dead a helluvalot sooner anyway.

But we'll never know now.

This is why I can't appreciate his speech.

Clinton Speech

Submitted by charlietexas on Sun, 09/11/2011 - 1:38pm.

Was not only the best, but one of the finest I have heard in a very long time. I feel the same about Bubba as many, but he reached out in a gentlemanly fashion and actually thanked everyone on the right for keeping the country safe. We need much more of this type of speech from everyone.......will help heal the nation.
