Sharpton's 'PoliticsNation' Debut Bombs - Even Bested By Smerconish Guest-Hosting 'Hardball'

The debut of Al Sharpton's new program on MSNBC did not go very well Monday.

As TVNewser reported, "PoliticsNation" actually attracted less viewers than Michael Smerconish did guest-hosting for Chris Matthews on "Hardball":

Yes, you're reading that right: Sharpton only had 519,000 total viewers in his debut.

That's less than a guest-host on "Hardball" who few Americans have ever heard of.

Possibly more concerning to MSNBC top brass - assuming they actually care about ratings! - was Sharpton getting less than one-third the viewers of Fox News's "Special Report" as well as being soundly beaten by CNN's "Situation Room."

"PoliticsNation" also did poorly in the all-important demographic aged 25 to 54.

To be sure, this is only one day, but it can't be the debut anyone at this farce of a so-called "news network" was hoping for.

Nice job, Al!

except for being a racist

Submitted by ohio granny on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 10:41am.

The only thing keeping Rev. Racist from being a totally empty suit is he is a racist. Who wants to watch such a spectacle? Not anyone respectable. Welcome to the trash heap of society, Rev. Racist.

So the Rev. Not-So-Sharptoon's program bombed? No big shock there. It's just going to go downhill from there.

Once his show is cancelled, I wonder how long it will take before he (or one of his supporters) cries "RACISM"

Too early to tell, but . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 10:43am.

Sharpton's show could improve its ratings as people become more aware of it, but I don't expect to see anything significant.  His entire worldview is anchored on race; everything in politics eventually boils down to race, even it it takes quite a leap of logic to get there.

However, Sharpton will survive poor ratings longer than most because he is, afterall, MSNBC's token black show host.  They had been criticized for years that all the hosts in their nightly line-up were white males, until they added Maddow (I ain't gonn go there.)  But the lack of a black host was sore point, so they needed someone with name recognition, and with the Comcast deal came good ol' Reverend Al. They probably don't know many other black Americans.

And there's a similar chance that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could convert to Judaism.

Sharpton Is Winning

The race to the bottom. The competition is ferocious for the worst host on MSNBC, but Sharpton is still leader of the pack.

And given that Smerconish, who is about about as squishy as the squishy middle gets (not to mention boring as hell), drew more viewers than this at times colorful fake reverend, has to be embarrassing.

Al won't last six months.

Look at Rachel 'The Snarl' Maddow's ratings. Not much better. And she's held up as the best and brightest of the bunch. Because she wears smart glasses and she's gay.
Hey Fox, why don't you add more Liberals to your channel seeing how well they're doing on other channels up against the Conservatives you have now.

They are stuck with Sharpton now.

Submitted by Red Jeep on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 10:58am.

Just try to cancel the show and the cries of RACISM will be heard.

519,00 viewers? That's like a small part of NYC listening and the rest of the country doing something else.

According to NBC's own publicity, "MSNBC delivers breaking news and in-depth coverage to 78 million households on cable 24 hours a day..." but only a few hundred thousand watch it.

I wonder if the advertisers think they are getting a message to 78 million homes instead of the few hundred thousand that is reality.

Dullard Sharpton's program

Submitted by MikeB on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 11:25am.

Dullard Sharpton's program debut fizzled because of all the rampant racism in America. Why I'll bet irRev Al has taped footage of some Kluckers, white robes and all, breaking in to homes of black people who are watching PoliticsNation and forcing them to change to FNC. Give Away More Money

Submitted by pilsener on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 11:31am.

Having watched a small amount of Rev. Al over the years, what has always annoyed me is how little he knows - about any issue. Even when he "ran for President", he didn't bother to learn anything about any issue - he just made stuff up and said it loudly.

All Sharpton has to talk about is that the government needs to give away more money and anyone who doesn't want the government to give away more money is racist. He's headed for Air America ratings.

Reading?

Submitted by Joe W. on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 12:49pm.

The reason that "Rev." Al has such a hard time with the teleprompter is that the man cannot read past a first grade level. The man is a functioning illiterate. And NOT a very functional one at that.

Rev. Al NOT racist

Submitted by fed3rd on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 1:27pm.

Hey folks, I wish everyone one would stop call the "Rev" a racist. He definitly is not . He is a CAPITALIST. The only color he cares about is GREEN! Just let a Black cop "tune up" a white guy and the white guy offers the 'Rev" money for his support. He'll be there like (can I say this?) White on rice! P.S. I'm Black and live in South Central L.A., so I can say this.

We already knew Al was a big dud.

Submitted by drsamherman on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 1:37pm.

Even the looniest race-baiting liar can't help MSNBC's ratings. There are only so many lunatic liberal fringe out there, and MSNBC has hit its natural limit. No wonder they abhor abstinence-only education and advocate responsibility-free sex--it is the only way their ratings will ever improve if they can breed more of their target audience.

MessNBC is Al's retirement safety net!

Submitted by gruyere cheese on Wed, 08/31/2011 - 6:08pm.

Bad karma is coming to MessNBC by way of the "so called" Rev. Sharpton -- and they deserve it! Management at this sorry excuse for a cable channel better get used to having Al for a long, very long, long time. Even if advertisers pull out of this time slot due to low ratings, management at MessNBC will have to stick with Al, because otherwise good old Al will pull out the race card.

Well...Al has never been accused of eloquence with his words. The words that come to mind with this race baiting tool is "Punk A$$ Faqqot".

Someone on the teleprompter should type that and see if Al says it on his show. That would be justice.

No matter how low the ratings go, or even if they lose ALL their advertisers, they will never cancel him. They would be labeled racists, and no liberal would stand for that.
