Martin Luther King's Daughter: 'Lincoln Remembered for Signing the Declaration of Independence'
At a ceremony to honor the opening of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in our nation's capital Friday, the late civil rights leader's daughter Bernice made an historical error that would evoke tremendous ridicule and derision if she were a conservative.
"Lincoln remembered for signing the Declaration of Independence" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
BERNICE KING: But as I close, I close with the recognition that daddy is standing, Lincoln is seated. Lincoln remembered for signing the Declaration of Independence. Daddy being remembered as standing up for truth and standing up for justice and standing up for righteousness and standing up for peace and standing up for freedom. Daddy is now standing on the National Mall in our nation’s capital.

Readers are strongly advised that I mean no disrespect whatsoever to Ms. King or her father. People when speaking in front of the public - especially without teleprompters - make innocent mistakes all the time.
We know Ms. King is fully aware that Lincoln didn't sign the Declaration of Independence. Toward the end of an eight-minute speech to her father's former fraternity Friday, she erred.
People do it all the time.
Likely - and frankly, rightly! - you haven't heard anything about this.
But would that be the case if this was an event for former President Ronald Reagan for example, and his daughter Patti Davis made such a mistake?
Imagine former Alaska governor Sarah Palin or Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann saying such a thing. This would have likely made headlines and been featured on all the nightly news programs.
That's what happened when Bachmann recently mistook the day Elvis Presley died for his birthday. A Google search of "Bachmann Elvis Presley" produced over 7 million results, and that's just a flub concerning a dead rock star.
This is a mistake concerning the Declaration of Independence and one of America's greatest presidents.
Also of note, a video of this speech including the error was posted at YouTube by CNN's Roland Martin. Of course, he made no mention of King's faux pas.
Seems a metaphysical certitude, though, that if this were Palin, Bachmann, or any conservative, Martin would have been ridiculing the speaker with both guns blazing.
But not in this case, for liberals are allowed to make mistakes with total impunity when speaking to the public.
Just ask the current President and Vice President.

In my opinion King's daughter was intentionally slighting president Lincoln with her Lincoln just sits there ( possibly counting his money maybe ) while her father was standing up for truth and standing up for justice and standing up for righteousness and standing up for peace and standing up for freedom. Daddy is now standing on the National Mall in our nation’s capital.
Lincoln stood for all of those same things and deserves more than this.
I do not give her a pass, as this speech was intentionally racist and any honest " real " American knows it.
I do not believe her father would approve of her devisive words...not one bit.

That's a pretty intriguing statement, BMG..........with Lincoln 'sitting there', and Daddy 'standing up for freedom and justice' and whatever else she said. And I think that the MLK statue is bigger than Lincolns??? And we've also heard Boy Blah-Blah trying to compare himself to King on many occasions.................maybe there is something a little nefarious going on here.
I never used to pay much attention to conspiricy theories, but anymore I take them all into consideration.

If you've ever seen Leno's "Jaywalking" segment you know that an awful lot of people are stupendously ignorant of history. I've seen it once, and he was asking people who the first man to walk on the moon was. One person out of about fifteen got it right; the rest were clueless. Jay gave one woman several clues, telling her that "He kneels, and his arm is strong". She floundered around and finally gave up. >.<
I have no problem believing that the woman said what she really thought; it's well within the realm of possibility, given the state of our education system.

Did the families whose loved ones names appear on the Vietnam Memorial demand compensation for our nation honoring their loved ones? Having this moocher speak at the dedication was disgraceful.
This comment takes nothing away from Dr. King whose personal courage in standing up for what he believed despite the attempts on his life should be commended. And although I disagree with some of his philosophy his work did change our country for the better by forcing the elimination of segregregation that was imposed on us by the Democrats and I am glad to see him honored on the mall.

And while I'm sure Bernice King has heard of the Emancipation Proclamation, I'd doubt that she actually understands what it involved.
While Lincoln (a Republican) signed the executive order in 1863, it only affected slaves in the Confederate states and not union states such as Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware. Slavery was not formally abolished in the Union until ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865, under president Andrew Johnson. And even then, blacks did not have the full right to vote until passage of the VRA, which was overwhelmingly supported by Congressional Republicans.
Of course, in Bernice King's world history, when Lincoln signed the Declaration of Independence there were also only 13 states, instead of the 57 states in today's America.

Does anyone else find it strange that we have no Federal holiday named after either a President or a Patriot, but we have a Martin Luther King Jr. day? How about this idea: People who desire a "color blind nation" should not refer to themselves as Black or African American, as these "tags" clearly denote color ("A house divided against itself cannot stand." Abraham Lincoln, June 17, 1858). It is time for color based organizations, such as the NAACP, to fade away. They are self serving organizations. They can only exist by making color an issue, and to have a "color blind society" would put these racists out of a good paying job, so one can understand the real reason why they exist. Be proud to be an American, and work to see that the Congress, and the President, follow the Constitution, rather than "Trample On It".

I think she thought Lincoln was a signer of The Declaration of Independence. She's a Liberal. They know nothing about our history. They only know what the media and government has taught them. There were Republican Senators and Representatives in the late 1700's who were black. There were black Judges of white towns. Black Ministers in white churches. Democrats didn't like it. Remember Dred Scott. Democrats argued blacks were "property". Republicans said they were free men. Somehow, the black community has gravitated to the people who believed they were "property". Go figure.

Noel, I disagree with you that she should receive a pass on her mistake. She should be called out on it just as harshly as if she were a conservative. You are assuming that she does know the difference between the Declaration and the Proclamation and that is not what we know. She made the reference and if the journalists are honest in their reporting, she needs to be confronted. It might have been a mistake and it might not have. Here she is talking at the democratic national convention in 2008. Harly a staple of a "conservative".

I have to disagree with Noel on a point: since this was a prepared speech and since multiple people were involved in its creation, there is no excuse for making such a gross error. Impromptu speeches are one thing, but prepared speeches are quite another.

This was the speech of a lifetime for Bernice King. No way was this impromptu.
Any excuses provided here would be soft bigotry.

Reading through these comments, it appears we are arguing whether to engage in the SOFT BIGOTRY OF LOW EXPECTATIONS.
Please leave that to the Liberals!!! Expect excellence from everyone!
Sorry, this came from a prepared speech, written and delivered by a monetarily remunerated member of the King family. It is absolutely expected she should know the difference between the Declaration Of Independence and the Emancipation Proclammation.

I heard someone (conservative? Rush's fill in I think) say, too bad in the 60's there wasnt a powerful Black conservative to help keep the Black folks from the Dimwit plantation.
I thought to myself, what the hell do you think MLK was? The dimwits have been way to successful being the expressers, then convincing the oppressed, they are the saviors. Quite sad if you ask me.
It's obvious she was thinking of the "Emancipation...

It's just as obvious that General Hirohito signed the Executive Order (9066) authorizing the Internment of 110,000 Japanese-Americans.
Certainly we're at liberty to surmise what she really meant, but that can never carry the weight of what she really said. (without immediate correction from her).

African-Americans as the Declaration of Independence was to whites. In spite of everything, including Obama as president, we are still a divided Country thanks to people like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan.
By the way, it was FDR who signed that particular executive order and not Emperor Hirohito. Perhaps you were thinking of General Tojo?

Only thing that bothers me is the demand from Liberals that blacks be held to a lower standard than other races.
I'm sick of this liberal belief that blacks are lower on the evolutionary scale than whites.
Personally, I refuse to believe in their version of evolution.

The Declaration of Independence actually meant something and had behind it the weight of a nation of men willing to die for liberty.
The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order made by an aspiring tyrant, which carried little weight regarding the abolition of slavery.
Sounds to me like you are someone who doesn't believe...

Lincoln saved our Country and as a result is considered to be, along with Washington, one of our two greatest presidents.
