Gore: Scientists Wouldn't Lie for Money to Advance Global Warming Theory - But Skeptics Would

By Noel Sheppard | August 27, 2011 | 19:37

Noel Sheppard's picture

Nobel laureate Al Gore claimed on Friday that scientists involved in advancing the theory of global warming wouldn't do it just for the money.

Without recognizing the hypocrisy, he also told FearLess Cottage consumer advocate Alex Bogusky that scientists espousing a skeptical view of his money-making theory are exclusively doing so for their own financial benefit (video follows with transcript and commentary):

ALEX BOGUSKY, CONSUMER ADVOCATE, FEARLESS COTTAGE: Well, they also funded and created some think tanks that would release reports, and there were scientists that worked there, but they were funded by the tobacco industry.

AL GORE: Yeah, yeah.

BOGUSKY: And some of those are, are now, have gone to work for oil and gas, or oil and coal.

GORE: What a lot of people don’t realize, this is so astonishing, some of the same people…

BOGUSKY: Yeah.

GORE: …who took money from the tobacco companies to put out lies about the science of smoking and health are now taking money from the coal and oil companies to put out lies about the science of global warming.

BOGUSKY: Yeah.

GORE: And those lies in this new communications environment gain a much larger audience on a regular basis than what the real scientists are actually saying.

BOGUSKY: Well, and, and, and you talk about the special interests, but there’s more and more special interest in government.

GORE: Yeah.

BOGUSKY: At least that’s, you know, my analysis.

GORE: For sure.

For sure? Was Gore actually agreeing that there’s more special interests in government?

I think Bogusky caught him off-guard with that, and the Nobel laureate didn’t realize what he was saying “for sure” to.

But in this instance, he was right. As Sen. Jim Inhofe's (R-Ok.) former communications director Marc Morano reported in 2007:

Newsweek reporter Eve Conant was given the documentation showing that proponents of man-made global warming have been funded to the tune of $50 BILLION in the last decade or so, but the Magazine chose instead to focus on how skeptics have reportedly received a paltry $19 MILLION from ExxonMobil over the last two decades.

Two years later, the Science and Public Policy Institute updated and confirmed these numbers:

The US government has spent over $79 billion since 1989 on policies related to climate change, including science and technology research, administration, education campaigns, foreign aid, and tax breaks. [...]

Meanwhile in a distracting sideshow, Exxon-Mobil Corp is repeatedly attacked for paying a grand total of $23 million to skeptics—less than a thousandth of what the US government has put in.

Despite the overwhelming majority of funds concerning this matter going to climate alarmists, Gore claimed it's skeptics that are willing to lie for money.

Moments later, he ironically said the folks on his side would never do this:

BOGUSKY: Governor Perry suggests that scientists have gotten together to foil the American public, or the global public.

GORE: Yeah.

BOGUSKY: There aren’t even movie scripts like that, where every, it’s, it’s, it’s, it seems difficult for me to understand how people would believe that. Yet there are actual incidents - tobacco being the most recent - of industries that have set out to continue to perpetrate a lie.

GORE: Yeah.

BOGUSKY: Scientists in general don’t really like to agree. That’s not what science does. Right?

GORE: Right, right, right. Yeah, and, and, and sometimes contrarians in science have become famous by overturning an accepted view.

BOGUSKY: That’s how you get reputations.

GORE: Yeah, there’s a natural respect for that impulse, absolutely.

Okay, so there are incidents when industries "have set out to continue to perpetrate a lie." But Bogusky doesn't consider that since Gore has huge investments in companies that benefit from global warming activism, he himself might be less than honest with his assertions.

As is typical, the motivation of liberals is never questioned.

As for the Nobel laureate, he admitted a "natural respect" for "contrarians in science [who] have become famous by overturning an accepted view."

But not when they go against his view:

GORE: But this is different. This is an organized effort to attack the reputation of the scientific community as a whole, to attack their integrity, and to slander them with the lie that they are making up the science in order to make money. Look, first of all, these scientists don’t make a lot of money. They’re comfortable, and as they should be, but they don’t make a lot of money. That’s not their motivation for doing what they do.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

So, through July 2009, there was almost 3500 times more money spent by the U.S. government to spread global warming alarmism than what ExxonMobil dished out to fight it.

Yet, all those receiving funds to advance the theory are saints and all those on the other side are corrupt liars.

Even more hypocritical, in virtually the same breath, Gore said it's the skeptics attacking the "reputation of the scientific community," attacking "their integrity," and slandering them "with the lie that they are making up the science in order to make money."

The only attacks and slander going on here is what Gore and his followers regularly do against anyone that dares to disagree with this still unproven theory.

This is a great article but how did the author miss the chutzpah of Gore bringing up tobacco when HE took $ from them long after Surgeon General warnings and his sister's death. Also keep in mind this is the same guy who said technicalities should not invalidate ballots but then wanted military absentee ballots thrown out due to technicalities.

Submitted by CO2Maker on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 8:29pm.

A. Some disreputable scientists take money from special interests to skew the data and analyses in order to "prove" that capitalist-industrial global warming isn't happening? And that's wrong because these rogue ("contrarian") scientists are taking money to prove their paymasters' foregone conclusion that it's all a hysterical scam?

Yet at the same time

B. Zealous believers in the *theory* of anthropocentric global warming—which is as yet unproven and only theorized in computer models based on six trees in Siberia and three woebegone polar bears stranded on ice floes—have ginned up the green-eggs-and-moolah pressure to build giant windfarm bird blenders and to turn a food crop into fuel, and that has made Algorithm very wealthy. Now that's okay. No suspicious self-dealing there? Getting government grants to fund green projects, which Algorithm has a large financial stake in, isn't shady or unethical. It's not like rerouting the new Interstate across land the senator owns, right?

Remember, Algorithm's former boss got BJs in his office but AG himself couldn't even get a massage with benefits in Portland!

I'm adjunct/clinical faculty at the full professor level. When you get to be my age, practice medicine and teach as many residents and fellows, they just give the full title to you to keep you happy. I don't cost 'em a dime, but I get to rant and rave at the tenure stream medical whackademics to remind them how out of touch they are.

When I went through my postgrad residencies (psych then neuro), I never had any intention of doing the academic medicine thing outside of the postgrad environment. Who wants all of that political claptrap? UGH...........

running and screaming from academia, because of how corrupt and political it was. Of course there is some good research going on, it would be remiss to say that is not the case, but there is so much garbage that people use to get grants.

Plus, often the grants are funded by the government, which is the same government that is trying to put in place policies that have a vested interest in the outcome of the research.

I am not as colorful as the first commenter and wouldn't put myself in the same league, but I agree with him completely. I went into the business world because of the bottom line. If a product isn't successful, of value or do what you say it is going to do, it shows up in the bottom line. With crony capitalism there is some flaw in this thinking but I would much rather be around the pigs in the business world and the roll around in the mud with the arrogant academic elite.

I'd like to thank Hollywood for renewing my interest in reading.

Hello Lipton!

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 11:08pm.

I am babysitting the neurologist beeper tonight and just came off a case. I am a right fit mood, so please excuse my bluntness. My patient was a kid who decided to try to suck the excess fentanyl off the patch his grandmother had just thrown in the garbage. If you ever have to deal with an opiate-overdosed 15-year old male with hormones blasting like a Jupiter-V rocket, please do yourself a favor and pass on the experience.

I have many medical colleagues who voluntarily gave up their practices to go into pharma, managed care, device, etc. I don't blame them a bit. I was a bit too attached to my office staff and patients when I still owned my solo practice, but when I joined this larger group practice, I was happy to get my life back.

Honestly, I commend any doctoral degree researcher who is willing to tell academic to bite it. Between the battles over credit for the most obscure publications, the political buttkissing to obtain tenure/promotions and the constant harangue of some politically ambitious but mentally unstable department chair or dean--FORGET IT. I was offered academic medical positions many times, including two years ago. Carl Lewis could not run fast enough to chain me down with that political nonsense.

As you allude, there are lots of risks in the private sector. I will gladly endure any of those risks for the ivory tower mentality any day of the week. Most of my academic medical colleagues see so few patients that they don't know what happens in the real world. How are they supposed to teach future physicians if they don't see any patients? Nobody in academic medicine has yet answered that question to my satisfaction.

I don't know - maybe I've just been lucky or maybe physics, for the most part (with one huge exception), just doesn't have to deal with politics when it comes to grants.

Don't get me wrong - I know that there are some folks who have issues with others and there are people who bump heads with others as far as personalities go which might affect things like the acceptance of papers into certain journals. But I can't honestly say I've ever really heard of problems as far as funding goes.

But then, if I put in for a grant to study viscoelastic spinodal decomposition, I'm guessing that isn't going to rub anyone the wrong way as far as politics go.

There is undeniable proof that Global Warming is REAL.

Submitted by Rush Fan on Sun, 08/28/2011 - 5:41am.

Al Gore may be way off base when he claims that scientist would not recklessly manipulate the truth for money. But the bottom line is that Al Gore is right on base when it comes to Global Warming. There is widespread support that greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (NO2), and water vapor) are the reason the Earth is warming, impacting our future existence.

For those of you who claim Global Warming is an "unproven theory", let me cite two impartial references: PolitiFact and Governor Chris Christie.

At least one NewsBusters' contributor (who will go unnamed because I respect him, and everyone is entitled to a mistake now and then) often uses Politifact for fact checking. So you could conclude that the 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner website that is operated by the left-leaning St. Petersburg Times must be fair and accurate. Right?

Recently, Gov. Rick Perry made this statement:

"Scientists are "questioning the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing the climate to change. … (It is) more and more being put into question."

PolitiFact rated Perry's statement as FALSE and wrote in part:

Earlier this year, a committee organized by the National Research Council and the National Academy of Sciences again reviewed the current research on climate change. The committee concluded that climate change is occurring, that it is caused primarily by the emission of greenhouse gases from human activities, and that it poses significant risks for a range of human and natural systems. It specifically rejected the view that that those findings are in some way questionable.

Republican Governor Chris Christie, who appears to be an intelligent and reasonable fellow, is a strong supporter of Global Warming (VIDEO) and the Green environmentalist movement. Gov. Christie has gone so far as to ban new coal plants in New Jersey, and he intends to shut down current coal plants. Additionally, Christie is committed to New Jersey's 2021 Renewables & Efficiency Standard, which will dramatically increase energy costs in that state for businesses and households.

If PolitiFact and Gov. Chris Christie have not persuaded you, and you are still convinced that Global Warming is an unproven theory, than my hats off to you. In my opinion you have much more common sense and objectivity than PolitiFact and Governor Christie.

For those of you who are still considering using PolitiFact as a reliable source for fact checking consider that PolitiFact rated FALSE this statement by former Governor and Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty:

"The weight of the evidence (on global warming) is that most of it, maybe all of it, is because of natural causes ... it’s fair to say the science is in dispute."

Finally, this is what PolitiFact wrote about the climategate email controversy:

However, we can say this with certainty: The e-mails do not prove that global warming is a hoax. In fact, there's overwhelming evidence that temperatures have been rising and are continuing to rise .

You may not be convinced that Al Gore and the Left's Global Warming nonsense is real. But I hope you are now convinced that using PolitiFact as a source for fact checking is questionable to say the least. As for Governor Chris Christie, let's hope he comes to his senses, before he ever considers running on the Republican ticket for president.

Journalism As a Profession

Submitted by billyjack on Sun, 08/28/2011 - 10:56am.

... is slightly above pedophilia, but certainly below armed robbery.

Just because some journalist in Politifact selects from quotes from brainwashed idiots as if they knew something about the subject matter doesn't make it correct. The MSM hides any fact that goes against the religion of Secular Socialism, so how is this organization going to find out anything to the contrary to religious dogma of AGW. Case in point is recent NASA release that has recieved virtually no press that has proven through satellite measurements that long wave radiation(heat) continues to escape into space since 1978 at the same or higher rates despite the increased concentration of CO2. If the CO2 has not reduced the heat escape then the entire premise of AGW is false. This has received little attention while Michael Mann's hockey stick of fraud of pasting actual temperature measurements on the end of tree ring temperature estimates was never questioned until Climategate. Every computer model predicting runaway warming includes a calculation that predicts the exact opposite of this fact, that Lindzen(climate scientist @ MIT) has been pointing out for years with again no comment from the acolytes.

What upsets me are those on the Right, who really should know better, using sites such as PolitiFact as legitimate and authoritative sources for facts. Who is Alex Bogusky

Submitted by Gat New York on Sun, 08/28/2011 - 8:22am.

I think it is useful to know who Alex Bogusky is or was.

Bogusky was the Co-Chairman and head creative (called himself "chief insurgent officer" - whatever the heck that means) for an ad agency named Crispin Porter + Bogusky. The agency became famous for work on Burger King and Volkswagon.

The ad agency industry is a generally self-congratulatory business that ignores actual results.

For that reason Bogusky was inducted into the American Advertising Federation’s Hall of Achievement In 2009 and was named Creative Director of the Decade in Adweek magazine's Best of 2000s issue.

Even though he never went to college, he received an honorary PhD from the University of Colorado.

But here is the dirty little secret. The agency was fired from both Burger King and Volkswagon because their work failed and failed  miserably. But since when did results means anything to ad agencies?

They were appropriately nailed by none other than the Publisher of Advertising Age, Rance Crain:

Al Gore the Monkey Man...

Submitted by packman on Sun, 08/28/2011 - 9:31am.

continues to spew his liberal tripe. Now he accuses skeptics of being racist. Huh? Exactly how does that work Al? Sounds like more liberal spew...essentially, if you don't agree with him then you are...racists....or something.

One of my family members recently bought a new vehicle, a big GMC Sierra pickup. When criticized by one of their friends for buying one of these planet-gobblers, their response was, "oh, not to worry, we're also buying new bicycles to offset the emissions from the truck, so everything will balance out."

Unfortunately, there are still many who have bought into this Gorish brainwashing...who cling to the belief that riding your bike or planting a tree will actually change the earth's climate.

Watching the recent track of Hurricane Irene -- the weather system around this storm spans a diameter of about a thousand miles and since it formed off the coast of Africa, has traveled about 5000+ miles. But maybe if we get enough bicycles and electric cars together we can make that thing go somewhere else...or maybe actually prevent it from forming in the first place. Yeah.

I have ranted much about Gore's man-made myth, thus I will try to be short.

1) I know not one major theory, from the Theory of Evolution or Einstein's Theory of Relativity, that  are settled-science. While there's board consensus on these theories, scientists still debate many of the fine details or the assumptions based on them - Anthropogenic Global Warming is a new theory compared to those above and for Gore to make such wild predictions, like the sea could rise by 20 feet by 2030 are asinine to say the least.

2) Regarding salaries earned by Global Warming alarmists (scientists) is laughable. Most of the scientific leaders in this political movement are well paid and have so many perks, they live like millionaires.

Galileo and his new geokineticism (not the ignorant "heliocentrism" of the stupid bigoted evolutionism religion pretending to be science of CLERGYMAN Darwin, no one believing the sun is the center of the universe) didn't fight the geocentrism of the Church, rather that of the evolutionist scientists whose livlihood was threatened, and the same has been true for most scientific advancement that is usually CONTRARY TO CONSENSUS (e.g. Lister & Pasteur and their "consensus" opponents comparably as deluded and arrogant as Algore), despite today's lies to the contrary that easily fool the historically illiterate and the just plain totally illiterate that are the vast majority today so blind as to buy the deranged fascist lies that the unborn aren't babies but just blobs of tissue or "products of conception."
See why the creationism of SCIENTIST Sir Isaac Newton is true science and the evolutionism religion of CLERGYMAN Darwin is a laughable fraud without an ounce of scientific support outside the antiChristian religious bigotry that established it, sadly including most professing "christians" usually just as stupid and historically and especially Biblically illiterate, at www.creation.com and www.trueorigin.org.
