Al Sharpton Officially Given His Own MSNBC Program - 'PoliticsNation'
Since Al Sharpton took over for Cenk Uygur in MSNBC's 6:00 time slot last month, he's been derided and ridiculed as a laughing stock totally unqualified to host a cable news program.
Ironically, that makes him a perfect fit at this farce of a news outlet, and on Tuesday, the folks at MSNBC rewarded his incompetence by officially giving him his own show (press release via TV By The Numbers):
REVEREND AL SHARPTON TO HOST “PoliticsNation” ON MSNBC
Program to Air at 6 pm ET Weeknights Beginning August 29th
NEW YORK – August 23, 2011 – Reverend Al Sharpton, the civil rights activist and minister, has been named host of “PoliticsNation,” a nightly program airing weeknights live at 6 p.m. ET on MSNBC. The announcement was made by Phil Griffin, President of MSNBC. “PoliticsNation” will debut on August 29. In his new role, Sharpton will lead a lively and informed discussion of the top headlines, bringing viewers his take on events in his signature style.
“I’ve known Rev. Sharpton for over a decade and have tremendous respect for him. He has always been one of our most thoughtful and entertaining guests,” said Griffin. “I’m thrilled that he’s now reached a point in his career where he’s able to devote himself to hosting a nightly show. ‘PoliticsNation’ is going to be an incredibly strong kick-off to our evening schedule.”
In addition to being a frequent guest on MSNBC throughout the network’s history, Rev. Sharpton has also served as an occasional guest host on several programs, most recently on “MSNBC Live at 6PM” and “The Ed Show.” He joins the network at a time where MSNBC has experienced tremendous ratings growth, consistently topping CNN in primetime programming.
"I am very happy and honored to join the MSNBC team as we collectively try to get America to ’Lean Forward,’" said Sharpton. "It is a natural extension of my life work and growth. We all learn from our pain and stand up from our stumbling and one must either learn to lean forward or fall backwards. I'm glad they have given me the opportunity to continue my forward lean."
With over 40 years of experience as a community leader, politician, minister and advocate, the Rev. Al Sharpton is one of America’s most-renowned civil rights leaders. Sharpton’s highly visible career began at the tender age of four when he preached his first sermon. A successful civil rights career soon followed, helping Sharpton hold such notable positions as the Youth Director of New York’s Operation Breadbasket, Director of Ministers for National Rainbow Push coalition, and founder of his own broad-based progressive civil rights organization, the National Action Network (NAN), one of the leading civil rights organizations in the world. Since its inception in 1991, NAN has expanded to encompass chapters throughout the United States and maintain important regional offices in Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, GA; Detroit, MI; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Las Vegas, NV; and Los Angeles, CA. Sharpton was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President in 2004. Rev. Sharpton also hosts a nationally syndicated radio show that broadcasts in 40 markets, five days a week. He resides in New York and has two daughters, Dominique and Ashley.
“PoliticsNation” will air weeknights from 6:00-7:00PM ET on MSNBC. Matthew Saal is Executive Producer.

After what Sharpton did to Rush when Rush applied for ownership of the St. Louis Rams, Rush, with all his backers, should start a boycott against the Rev. Al based on all his past antics. Advertisers should be warned. Come on Rush, come back off vacation and get this moron off the air!!!
Rush Should NOT Start a Boycott!
Submitted by Flig Narson on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 8:22pm.
Are you kidding? That's not Rush's style... and Rush would have no interest in leading a boycott to get Sharpton off the air. That's not what conservatives do -- that's what "progressives" do: try to stifle the voices of those with whom they disagree.
Furthermore, Sharpton will provide so much ammunition... and so much good material for Rush, that I'm sure Rush will LOVE the fact that Sharpton's on every day. One of the best things we can do is keep Sharpton just where he is, and shine a bright light every day on what this buffoon says. It'll be great!
Flig - I don't totally
Submitted by djnyk on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 8:52pm.
Flig - I don't totally disagree with your observation. I get it. It just still burns me up that this POS gets a show like that with no recourse based on his dubious past and how he campaigned to stop Rush from gaining part ownership of an NFL team. If Rush feels good by goofing on him non-stop, that works - just don't see the equity - we might never see it. I think I hate the NFL more for caving to Sharpton and Jessie Jackson than anyone else from that whole debacle.
It frustrates me too...
Submitted by Flig Narson on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 10:51pm.
Believe me, djnyk, I understand the frustration. I'm an unemployed broadcaster... years in radio and TV... news, interview programs, talk shows... and although I'm not a "name" you would recognize (it probably won't be surprising to learn that Flig Narson is not my real name...) I'm ten times more qualified than Sharpton to do an hour long program like this. Most of us with my experience in any medium to large market in this country are more qualified than Sharpton to host this program. But will any of us ever even be considered? No. But Sharpton, because he's black, outrageous, flamboyant, and infamous, has a program. And MSNBC has the audacity to pretend that this joker... this buffoon... this thug... has credibility. So, yes, I certainly understand the frustration.
But having Sharpton under the microscope, day after day... as we (and, I'm sure, Rush) will not let him get away with anything at all... will do more to humiliate and destroy this lowlife than any boycott possibly could. So let's just enjoy the show. And share all of its delights here on NewsBusters and the Breitbart "Big" sites, okay? It'll be so much fun...
It will be interesting

“I’ve known Rev. Sharpton for over a decade and have tremendous respect for him. He has always been one of our most thoughtful and entertaining guests,” said (MSNBC President Phil) Griffin.
There is not a chance in the world that Griffin could possibly believe what he has said here, but it is the unique talent of "progressives" to actually convince themselves that they are sincere. So Griffin tells even himself that he really means what he says. But if he does, that would mean he was either stupid or insane. And I frankly doubt either of those two things to be true. So he is at least as self-delusional as most "progressives," and probably more than most. After all, it must take a whole lot of self-delusion to become the head of a network which is comprised entirely of self-delusional people.

This news is not so bad! Hiring the so called "Reverend" validates what most intelligent people know; MSNBC is the official mouthpiece of the white house and so, nothing, absolutely nothing they say on their airwaves can be taken seriously. The "Reverend" hiring was most likely part of a contractual agreement with Comcast. Gives "sleeping with the devil" phrase a whole new meaning, doesn't it?

As I read the commentary across the blogs, I can only come to the conclusion that Sharpton is so disliked and ridiculed that MSNBC's overall credibility and ratings will drop even further by making him a permanent host. Clearly, some people just watch Matthews, Schultz, Bashir, Maddow etc. only for the comedy value.
It's like a bunch of high school kids got together and decided that their new ideas on how to run a business were much better than the grown ups. So, is Comcast just letting Phil Griffin and the rest of the MSNBC "management" have their way until they finally implode? Or possibly, Comcast's people are no better than MSNBC's. -bidn-

Sharpton is one of those well-known people who you either like because you are a fringy lunatic or dislike because you are are not a fringy fundamentalist. Since the creepy fringy types are already watching MSNBC, this will only make MSNBC appear more like a fringy news outlet to anyone on the fence about watching the show.
So on top of this making it painfully obvious to all that MSNBC is a joke, it will give sites like this endless comic relief since Sharpton is an idiot. Given their lineup past and present, you could make the argument Sharpton is an upgrade.
That aside, just think of the drama if they decide to reprimand him for some controversial statement or (gasp) fire him.
Epic.....

INSANITY.
You know he will, too.
Maybe we should start a pool....how long until Sharpie utters something that's worth a suspension or firing?
I'm betting 2.3 weeks.

One thing's for sure though.
If Sharpton does manage to stay out of trouble, it'll be a LONG time before he dares take a vacation and allows someone with real talent, intelligence and personality to guest host in his absence.
My pick would be Herman Cain.
Wouldn't that be the final irony? And what a coup for MSNBC! :-D
LOL

Is that by MSNBC's standards or the real world's standards? :-)
