Howard Fineman: If Obama Said 'I Love Apple Pie' Republicans Would Call It 'A Socialist Plot'

By Noel Sheppard | August 22, 2011 | 19:21

Noel Sheppard's picture

It's not at all surprising the Obama-loving, anti-war media are gushing and fawning over what appears to be a rebel victory in Libya.

On MSNBC's "Hardball" Monday, the Huffington Post's Howard Fineman joined in the victory lap mocking skeptical Republicans by sniping, "If Barack Obama came out and said, 'You know, I really love apple pie,' they would say, 'Apple pie is a socialist plot'” (video follows with transcript and commentary):

HOWARD FINEMAN, HUFFINGTON POST: And I think in this case his vision of careful multicultural, multilateral diplomacy and careful pinpointed use of force really did, really did work, and he deserves credit for it.

RON REAGAN, HOST: The Republicans, of course, don't see it that way. They're sort of nitpicking the situation. Do they risk looking peevish and small-minded as a result?

FINEMAN: I'm laughing because if they, if they ever worried about the risk of seeming peevish and small-minded, I haven't noticed it. I mean, if they, if Barack Obama came out and said, “You know, I really love apple pie,” they would say, “Apple pie is a socialist plot.”

That would depend on the ingredients, Howard.

Like so many of his colleagues, Fineman has a poor sense of irony.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

On the one hand, he mocked Republicans for not worrying about "seeming peevish and small-minded."

What this of course means is that he sees members of the GOP as "peevish and small-minded," and doesn't feel it's at all important for him as a so-called "journalist" to hide such negative sentiments about a large portion of Americans.

Yet those on the Right that possess a similarly negative view of the President, and feel uncomfortable giving him credit for anything, are to be mocked and derided for having those feelings.

As I've said for years, it takes a tremendous number of rationalizations to be a liberal these days.

What is also quite striking about today's left-leaning political analysts is how they conveniently feign total ignorance of politics when the situation warrants.

There's an election next year that the Republicans would like to win. It is therefore not in their best interest to say nice things about the president they're trying to defeat.

Surely someone that has covered national politics since 1978 is not only aware of this, but also has experienced it throughout his career.

Apart from the months immediately following 9/11, Democrats hardly ever had anything nice to say about George W. Bush. That's called politics.

Unfortunately, folks like Fineman lose all knowledge of how this game works whenever there's a Democrat in the White House.

At that point, Republicans are considered rude if they don't fawn and gush over him like members of the media do.

Sorry to disappoint you, Howard.

Suck it up Fineman, you backed an inexperienced, shallow, phoney community organizer; he hasn't grown in the job, he's run away from it. He's not interesting in being a leader; he's experienced at being a follower. You and breathren were snookered; it's time to admit your stupidity and move on.

Obama would say, "I love apple pie. It is unfair that those less fortunate are denied their civil right to apple pie." It's not that we are creating a socialist plot, it's that everything the guy says is right out of the socialist handbook.

Howard Fineman has a short memory

Submitted by Marcus Porcius on Mon, 08/22/2011 - 7:45pm.

Hey Howard remember this?

"The president had a caveat, though. The American involvement in military action in Libya should be limited '" no ground troops '" and finite. 'Days, not weeks,' a senior White House official recalled him saying. "

Days not weeks, eh Howard? So explain to us how MONTHS later, when most of the work was done by Europe, when it was Europe that pushed the idea and started the whole thing, this is somehow a great victory for the Comrade in Chief's "vision of careful multicultural, multilateral diplomacy and careful pinpointed use of force."

Sounds to me, Howard, that while apple pie may not be a socialist plot, you are certainly a socialist dolt.

And the vital US interest was?

Submitted by WingletDriver on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 7:47am.

What vital US interest is served by replacing Ghadafi with some unknown jihadist entity?

Why did we commit troops to Libya and not Syria? Could it be that Libya is a major oil supplier to Europe, making this nothing but a war for oil?

It seems that you and your ilk constantly berated Bush and Co. for not having an exit strategy in Iraq. What is our exit strategy in Libya?

Did Congress ever get around to declaring war?

So, rather than cheering this phenomenal success, why don't you ask an important question

And if Howard Fineman says "good morning' we check the clock.

Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 08/22/2011 - 7:58pm.

He is the prototypical "useful idiot" and "unwitting tool" so desirable to the (un)intelligentsia of the left. There is no other way to explain how a rather mundane, mediocre hack could have stayed so long at a left-wing rag like Newsweak. His incompetence is eclipsed only by his irrelevance.

My question is what does it take to get these old, useless lefties like Bob Schieffer, Andrea Mitchell and Howie to just retire? Either they are way too addicted to notoriety (good or bad--mostly bad in their case!) or delusional enough to believe anyone really cares what they have to say.

  1. First, he would want to nationalize the orchards the apples are grown in.
  2. Then nationalize the wheat fields that grow the grain for the dough.
  3. Grant amnesty and unionize the illegals that pick the apples.
  4. Nationalize and unionize the trucking companies and railroads who haul both.
  5. Nationalize and unionize the oil companies who deliver the fuels to make delivery possible, and to generate the electricity required to make pie baking happen.
  6. Nationalize and unionize the bakers who make the pies, the pans, the ovens they are cooked in, as well as the boxes they are put in.
  7. Nationalize and unionize the truckers that deliver the finished product to the retailers.
  8. Nationalize and unionize the retailers that sell the finished product.
  9. And make damn sure you pay out the wazoo for said product in order to make all of the above happen.

And of course the most dangerous of the domestic bad apple pies are those made by "church ladies" to sell at bake sales. March: Days not weeks (to victory)

Submitted by MidAmerica on Mon, 08/22/2011 - 8:30pm.

If I remember correctly our mission as stated by the president was merely a humanitarian one. The US was going to enforce a no-fly zone for the innocent people of Libya.  But it seems somehow the mission took longer (much longer) and it is questionable how many Libyans lives were saved.  Was Gaddaffi going to kill as many people as were killed in this civil war that the Europeans and Americans supported?  How many more will die in Libya until the political situation is settled?  And the question for a financially strapped America is how many billions of dollars did we invest in this overthrow of a sovereign country's leader?

Think about that constant refrain that George Bush lied us into war?

obama said our involvement didn't even rise to the level of being a war.

How many Libyans did our tomahawk cruise missiles turn into a bloody mist?

Submitted by Tjexcite on Mon, 08/22/2011 - 8:42pm.

Pie is not a socialists plot but a world view.

The is only one pie and how can they as the betters in government divide it so that even it if there a one million slices they are all equal. Not to let everyone have the ability to make their own pie as that would be unfair even if everyone has the same ingredients they don't have the drive, will, and ability so the government stop all pie production and make the one pie it produces split equally.

Praising Obama

Submitted by Agnostic on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 12:33pm.

First there were many that said extending the tax cuts was the right thing to do though the deal over all left people on both sides ill.  Many credited President Obama for taking out Osama though some questioned the method.  But here is the real problem - the MEDIA!

Here is the general format -

Obama does something (for sake of argument we will call it something good)

The media hyperventilates to get the message on air, in print and as many pundits lined up as possible to shovel praise on the President.

After 12-24 hours of the love fest people are tired of the slobbering media and it starts to taint any possible positives the President could have received because now he sounds more arrogant and self-centered due to the media.

People start to question the hype

Those who questioned the event or even the laudatory efforts of the media are berated by the media (called racist if possible)

- this is all done in the Presidents name by the media and it unfortunately takes a man that appears to be somewhat self-centered and makes him look like an egomaniac.

Second, I don't remember all the praise for Reagan for helping to end the Cold War, the turn in economic trends and turning the great 'Malaise' into a nation that was proud to be American again.  I don't remember all the praise for GWB for following the economic advisers and propelling out of the recession, removing personal ethical issues from the WH and holding policies that kept the economy going strong until he lost the Congress to Democrats.  (I know that is far too simplistic but since we've started on stupid talking points why should I bother doing an in depth response).

Well of course you know Howard, that apple pie is indeed a Socialist plot. You believed Obama's campaign rhetoric.....it should be no big leap to believe in subversive desserts.

Obama could love NASCAR and still be a socialist

Submitted by gopcongress on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 3:45pm.

Obama could love NASCAR, own a bunch of guns, a pickup truck, play golf every weekend (oh, he does that already, sorry), go to church (oh, jeremiah wright, sorry again), dress in checkered shirts and Stilson hats...

...and I would STILL call him a commie lib!
