Former Obama Economic Adviser on Downgrade: We're 'Pretty Darn F--ked'

By Noel Sheppard | August 06, 2011 | 00:01

Christina Romer, the former chair of Obama's Council of Economic Advisers on Friday offered a rather strong opinion concerning the announcement by Standard & Poor's that the credit rating agency downgraded America's debt to AA+.

Appearing on HBO's "Real Time," Romer said we're "pretty darn f--ked" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

BILL MAHER, HOST: So, excuse my language, but we used to do a segment on this show called “How F—ked Are We?”

(VIDEO CLIP)

MAHER: I didn’t expect that there. This, just before we went on the air they said our rating got downgraded.

CHRISTINA ROMER, FORMER CHAIR OF THE COUNCIL OF ECONOMIC ADVISERS, OBAMA ADMINISTRATION: So, pretty darned f—ked.

[Laughter and applause]

MAHER: Ooh.

ROMER: I’ve been hanging around Tim Geithner too long.

[Laughter]

MAHER: Why, does he swear like a sailor?

ROMER: Oh, like a seventh grade boy.

Isn't it interesting how we were told it would be a calamity if we didn't raise the debt ceiling, and three days after we do, our credit rating is cut anyway?

And what about Obama and his media minions initially asking for a "clean vote" that wouldn't have included any revenues or cuts?

Given S&P's decision, a raise of the ceiling without any spending cuts would have produced this same result.

It therefore is going to be very interesting in the coming days to watch how the Obama-loving media spin this.

Will they make the case that this wouldn't have occurred if Republicans accepted the President's "grand bargain" despite him having never actually put anything in writing that could be legitimately analyzed as well as scored by the Congressional Budget Office?

Stay tuned.

Obama is truly a man of "Firsts."

Our first half-black president.

Our first credit downgrade in history.

Our greatest single day loss of life for our military in the war on terror.

Our first Hip-Hop BBQ birthday party in the White House.

Our first Fascist president.

Our first president who truly wants to "fundamentally change this country" into God only knows what.

First time in my adult life that I am truly ashamed of the government of my country.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 9:55am.

In the great Clint Eastwood movie, Grand Torino, the Eastwood character, who is definitely colorful in the use of language is telling a joke to some pals.

He starts off, "So a kike, a spick, and a colored guy, walk in to a bar  ...."

Some slurs are allowed while others are waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy off limits, apparently, even when depicting a bigot.

Go figure.

So let me get this straight...

Submitted by eflatminor on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 1:27am.

A week ago, Washington warned us sternly that if the debt ceiling were not raised, the stock market would fall and our debt would be downgraded, resulting in higher interest rates for everybody. Some of us were labeled "radical" and even "terrorists" for suggesting we live within our means. Four days ago, we raised the debt limit by the largest margin in our history. Since then, the stock market tanked and we just got our debt downgraded. Oust the central planners before it's too late!

Yes. The obvious things

Submitted by Slyrr on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 1:47am.

Yes. The obvious things we're ticked about now is:
1) The liberal media screamed that if we didn't raise the debt ceiling it would be 'armageddon'.
2) If we didn't raise the debt ceiling, we'd be downgraded
3) If we didn't raise the debt ceiling, the stock market would crash
4) Anyone who opposed raising the debt ceiling was a 'terrorist'

Once again, the Demorats, the liberal media and the whole sorry pack of marxist/communist/socialist/anarchists who follow after them were wrong, WRONG, WRONG. Their policies have failed. Their 'messiah' has failed. Every blasted thing they've ever said, tried or theorized on has been a massive, demonstrable and disgusting failure.

And they STILL throw parties and spend 300 billion a day.

Sooner or later, the 'mobs and pitchforks' they've been using to threaten and bully their enemies are going to be coming after THEM.

GOP - why won't you learn? You have to learn to stop being scared of these people, and simply take to the airwaves to expose their policies for the lies that they are!

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

As for learning from this, hell, they haven't learned a thing from anything before, which is why this happened in the first place.

S&P Report is actually a gift

Submitted by Mike009 on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 7:51am.

This S&P downgrade is actually a gift to the Obama adminstration. The report cites Republican resistance to revenue increases and says virtually nothing about Democrat resistance to reducing spending. Democrats can now use this report against Republicans and to justify spending and tax hikes.

Ownership

Submitted by FaulknerFan on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 8:53am.

Yep! The media has already started. The intransigence of the Tea Party Republications in opposing "Revenue Enhancement" has led directly to this. John Harwood on NBC this morning said that the White House was sure to tell the republicans that now they own the problem, as if reminding the WH how they should spin it. Rather than admitting the obvious and getting serious about serious spending cuts immediately they are thinking how they can "make the most out of a crisis". The lack of real concern for the country and it's problems as opposed to party has long been a stable of the democrats/media and now has gotten to the point of obscene, and outright dangerous to all of our futures.

Did you even wonder . . .

Submitted by Gat New York on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 11:10am.

Did you ever wonder why every one of Obama's economic advisors left early and even Geithner had to be begged to stay? While I may not agree with then, these were not incompetent idiots.

Could it be that the first two years of Obama's term was driven by ideologues in the White House and on the Hill passing reckless government intervention legislation and imposing wide ranging regulations increasing government power, and then leaving it to the economic advisors to figure out how to rationalize and manage the mess created.

Submitted by rbosque on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 1:50pm.

This predicament is the result of spending that has reached beyong our ability to pay it back. We would have to live like a third world country for a hundred years and forfeit many years of prosperity just to pay it back. And for what? So Obama can give money to his union pals and to pay for an unecessary increase in gov't and regulations that are counter-productive to our freedoms and natural progression to our way of life

The S&P's Marxist-Progressive-Leftist-Liberal-Democrat-Obama Dow

Submitted by Lentenlands on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 12:00pm.

It really should be called the S&P's Marxist-Progressive-Leftist-Liberal-Democrat-Obama Downgrade Of America.

Collapsing the economy, creating anarchy and starting a civil war has always been the goal of the marxists plotting to destroy the American Dream and marxist Barry Obama is no exception. Obama’s marxist college professors, Cloward and Piven, were quite forthright in their efforts to formulate a method to collapse the economy to destroy America and usher in a marxist tyranny of slavery and death.

"The strategy of forcing political change through orchestrated crisis, the "Cloward-Piven Strategy" seeks to hasten the fall of capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse."

Our Manchurian President is simply a treasonous usurper partying, vacationing and golfing as his marxist plan of destruction unfolds. Obama and his pals are TERRORISTS destroying YOUR Nation and future.

It’s time to wake up America and do something about it!
