Chris Matthews: Roosevelt 'Saved Capitalism in the 1930s'

By Noel Sheppard | August 04, 2011 | 19:01

Noel Sheppard's picture

Chris Matthews on Thursday claimed Franklin Delano Roosevelt saved capitalism in the 1930s.

This deliciously came during a "Hardball" segment wherein he mocked the intelligence of Tea Party members saying they "need to read history, and especially Michele Bachmann" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: By the way, who saved capitalism in the 1930s?

CLARENCE PAGE, CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Oh yeah, socialism comes in…

MATTHEWS: FDR.

PAGE: …and saves capitalism.

MATTHEWS: FDR. FDR. Hoover wasn’t doing a very good saving capitalism. It was Roosevelt that I thought did it, and the war.

PAGE: Oh yeah.

MATTHEWS: But Roosevelt really kept it on its feet till the war came.

PAGE: It doesn’t hurt to put more money into the economy when you got a recession. It’s very simple.

MATTHEWS: Yeah, I think the Tea Party people need to read history, and especially Michele Bachmann take a look into…

PAGE: I’ll read it to them.

MATTHEWS: …the founding of our country first.

The idiocy and/or dishonesty on display here was staggering, for FDR's New Deal marked the beginning of socialism in this country and the deterioration of capitalism.

Highlights were the Wagner Act which promoted labor unions, the Works Progress Administration which used tax dollars to hire employees for public works programs, and of course Social Security.

Roosevelt was also responsible for numerous pieces of legislation that regulated industry which irrespective of their success or failure were by no means pro-capitalism.

As for FDR keeping capitalism "on its feet till the war came," despite all the billions of dollars he threw at the problem, unemployment was still at 17.2 percent at the end of 1939.

That's hardly capitalism "on its feet."

Yet this guy has the nerve to criticize Michele Bachmann and the Tea Party for their understanding of history.

Roosevelt and his supporters

Submitted by redfish on Thu, 08/04/2011 - 9:07pm.

Roosevelt and his supporters at the time did argue that they were saving capitalism, saving it from itself. FDR hated socialists like Huey Long, saying he (next to MacArthur) "was one of the two most dangerous men in America." He saw SS as a reform in a capitalistic system, and a way to stem the rise of radicals like Long. Remember, that when Social Security was started, it was understood to be a much smaller portion of the budget than it is today.

Conservatives still have an argument that the New Deal didn't save the economy. Matthews is still buying the party line "FDR saved the world". But the fact that FDR really didn't believe in wealth redistribution could be actually used as an argument against many modern-day progressives.

Matthews is Parotting Europea Marxists History Professors

Submitted by Avitar on Fri, 08/05/2011 - 3:38am.

This was a very popular hope in Marxist circles in Europe in the 1930's that the United States would have a Marxist revolution as Russia had in 1918. When FDR and his band of immagrant socialists stopped form short of the purges that Lenin and Stalin carried out in Russia the European narative was that if must be because FDR was trying to save Capitalism!

Any one on this Contenent would have notice the high gun ownership unlike the unarmed farmers and merchants that Stalin slaughted in Russia. They would have also recognized that the US Army with the exception of the Civil War did not make a habit of murdering citizens or herding them into prison camps when ordered to. FDR had to build up the FBI for that.

All of the repairs of American Capitalism that took place while FDR was still alive were the work of General Marshal and the War Production Board who took over running the country for the sick old man even before Dec, 7, 1941.

Speaking as a psychiatrist...

Submitted by drsamherman on Thu, 08/04/2011 - 7:58pm.

...there is no way under the sun that any psychiatrist could diagnose cocaine addiction/dependence simply by looking at someone's eyes. That sounds just like the type of uncorroborated trash that MSNBC promotes purely for a political agenda.

Any lurking liberal who chooses to doubt this may check the generalized substance abuse/dependence criteria in DSM-IV at http://www.sis.indiana.edu/DSM-IV-Criteria.aspx - and I would add that laboratory tests to confirm the existence of the major metabolite (called benzoylecgonine) of cocaine in a hair, blood or urine sample would also be required to confirm the diagnosis.

This misuse of medical science is beyond disgusting.

The term was first coined by the German physician Johann Christian Reil in 1808, and literally means the 'medical treatment of the mind' (psych-: mind; from Ancient Greek psykhē: SOUL; -iatry: medical treatment; from Gk. iātrikos: medical, iāsthai: to heal). Jer,
At the time, the Russians had a mutual enemy in radical Islam. They had the Chechnyan situation as well as several economic and political strifes that, at the time, were in our best interests to co-operate with.
They allowed us (without too much yapping) to use former airfields of the Soviet Union to conduct our operations in Afghanistan.
We didn't exactly see eye to eye with old Uncle Stalin, but we paid lip service to him and equipped him in WWII to defeat Hitler and to a lesser extent, Hirohito.
It's an odd thing to have to basically, verbally, kiss the posterior of a thug and murderer, but it is sadly all to necessary when confronted by the likes of the people we are currently dealing with.
Soviets didn't much mind croaking their own people, but they themselves wanted to live in all the luxury that socialism provides. The current crop of enemies we both face, seem to have a little different frame of mind.
If you are under the impression that President Bush felt that way (and I'm pretty sure you aren't, I've talked to you before and you are an intellegent man,) then you are mistaken. It's the language of diplomacy, like when our senators say "My friend from across the aisle..." and then basically call them racists, sexists, homophobes, communists, fascists, oh Hell, everything other than Moby Dick himself. It's just how things are done in international and domestic relations.

I'll agree with you on that one, President Bush did open himself up to criticism on that one, however I haven't and I wouldn't bash President Obama for saying likewise. Jer, you and I know he has to kiss quite too much "upper back thigh" in international relations, like bowing to sheiks, appologizing to corrupt Pakistani's and a sad bunch of other crap. No, I give the guy a pass on the crap he has to do, but when he (or anyone else) tries to say that this nation has muslim or islamic ties, I get a bit disgusted.
I never once heard about the suicide bombers at Bunker Hill. Perhaps my book was a bit out of date though.
I do understand your point, but seriously, some people will never accept President Bush as others will never accept President Obama (God, that one hurt just a bit...)
That's just gonna happen, all the way from stolen elections to creepy muslim infiltrator president, but as citizens, we gotta keep a level head.
Well, that, or just go ape-shi* on eachother with wooden clubs and see who survives.

And Matthews claims to know history?

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 08/04/2011 - 7:37pm.

I listened to this dialogue on my way home this evening, and I almost had to pull off the road to finish laughing.

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: By the way, who saved capitalism in the 1930s?

CLARENCE PAGE, CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Oh yeah, socialism comes in…

MATTHEWS: FDR.

PAGE: …and saves capitalism.

In the United States, hundreds and hundreds of banks failed during the New Deal.  To our north, not one Canadian bank failed, but then ,they had no equivalent to the New Deal.

MATTHEWS: FDR. FDR. Hoover wasn’t doing a very good saving capitalism. . .

Hoover began government intervention before he left office.  It was disasterous. FDR expanded the intervention.

MATTHEWS: . . .  It was Roosevelt that I thought did it, and the war. . . .

"and the war!"  So, the answer to who saved US capitalism is: Adolf Hitler.

MATTHEWS: But Roosevelt really kept it on its feet till the war came.

So, the progressive solution to a depression is to keep borrowing and spending until the next war comes along?  Why not just cut to the chase and declare war now?

PAGE: It doesn’t hurt to put more money into the economy when you got a recession. It’s very simple.

Earth to Moonbat Page.  Rewind your 8-track to 2009 and hit PLAY.  We've been there, bubba.

MATTHEWS: Yeah, I think the Tea Party people need to read history, and especially Michele Bachmann take a look into…

PAGE: I’ll read it to them.

I think you both need a to read some history.

What ended up as the genuine hoot on this show was Matthews' claims that the Tea Party was dictating its will to the American majority and would keep cutting government until it destroyed the nation.  working on the assumption that cutting government spending does not helpt the economy, Matthews' declared that the Tea Party would keep cutting and cutting and when that failed, they would claim that it was because  we didn't cut enough.  Matthews said that excuse was the very mark of ideologues -- repeating something over and over again despite the failure to produce.

Not more than a couple of minutes later, Matthews and his guests promoted more stimulus spending, explaining that the first stimulus (you might have guessed it) was not enough.  Ideologues?

Given the flat tire that were

Submitted by jdhawk on Thu, 08/04/2011 - 7:44pm.

Given the flat tire that were the markets today, perhaps this is an apt topic for "tingles" to bring up, but not the reasons he gives us.

In any event, the book that best explains why liberals are wrong in general and "tingles" in particular about FDR and his socialist programs is Jim Powells's FDR's Folly: How Roosevelt and His New Deal Prolonged the Great Depression.

Here is one reviewer's take on Amazon's web site:

"A common historical misconception is that FDR's New Deal rescued the United States from the Great Depression. However, Cato Institute Historian Jim Powell argues that the New Deal exacerbated and elongated the Great Depression. With impressive attention to detail, Powell examines the long-term results of the New Deal and persuasively argues that they crippled the U.S. economy.

In this detailed book, you will learn about the numerous programs the FDR administration brought about, including the following:

* Programs that inundated private businesses with unprecedented waves of regulations, such as the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, the National Recovery Administration and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

* Programs that redistributed wealth from producers to consumers, such as the Federal Emergency Relief Act and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation.

* Programs that nationalized industries, centrally planned infrastructure or created make-work projects to increase employment such as the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Public Works Administration and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Powell argues that these programs typically led to poorly planned infrastructure that was more expensive than what could have been acquired in a free market.

The economic results of FDR's programs were devastating. For example, consider the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA). The price and production controls of the AAA led to perverse practices such as millions of tons of domestic oat and corn being burned while the U.S. simultaneously imported oat and corn, millions of peaches being left to rot and millions of "excess" pigs being needlessly slaughtered while lard was being imported from overseas. The extent of economic regulation under the FDR Administration reached such absurd levels, there was even a government board organized solely to control the production and pricing of milk!

This book will also detail the oppressive controls on income and wages under the FDR administration. Under FDR, scores of private sector jobs were eliminated through minimum wage laws, personal income taxes hit 79% for certain brackets and how government spending during FDR's first two terms exceeded the total amount of Federal spending in the prior history of the United States.

Powell reveals how all of FDR's programs are based upon the fatally flawed premises of Keynesian economics, including the following:
* That government spending is always good for the economy, even if it is engaging in pointless ventures such as building pyramids.
* War is good for the economy.
* Gold (as a standard of currency) is a "barbarous relic" that prevents economic growth.
* A capitalist economy will inevitably slow to a halt without periodic bolsters from centralized planning.
* Consumption (i.e., the destruction of wealth) not production, drives the economy. Thus, government should redistribute wealth from those who would invest it to those who would spend it.

From reading this book, you will also learn that many of FDR's earliest programs, such as the AAA and the National Recovery Act, were originally ruled as unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. Unfortunately FDR stayed in office long enough to appoint 7 of the 9 sitting supreme court justices, which eventually opened the floodgates for New Deal reforms. Thus, is the unforeseen danger of having a President serve more than two terms.

Powell has done a fantastic job with this work. I am not surprised that FDR's Folly has been enthusiastically recommended by famed free market economists such as Milton Friedman and Thomas Sowell. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in free market capitalism and learning the real history of the Great Depression."

The sad truth is that O'bummer has followed the FDR script almost to the letter. I hope that the November 2012 election and the defeat of O'bozo isn't too late to save our economy

Raw Deal

Submitted by FaulknerFan on Thu, 08/04/2011 - 9:55pm.

Another great book on FDR is "New Deal or Raw Deal" by Burton Folsom. He shows how Roosevelt used the New Deal money as a slush fund to reward supporters and punish adversaries. For instance a relatively small amount of the money went to the southern states regardless of the fact they they had some of the biggest problems because they were solid supporters of FDR already. Significantly more went to swing states where the race was close, especially near election time. Sound familiar? Also FDR used the New Deal to start Federal grants to states, again as a way to buy allegiance and votes. Some states refused the money initially on the grounds that it was undermining the independence of the states but these politicians were soon voted out of office as the people in the states not getting the money saw how much their neighbors were getting. FDR was elected four times not because he was so popular but because he bought the election with taxpayer money. Seems to me Obama has studied the FDR playbook and is trying to replicate it.

FF, thanks for the recommendation. That adds a piece to the puzzle of FDR's "popularity." It also highlights why almost as soon as FDR died and the war ended, Congress set about passing and sending to the states for ratification what became the 22d Amendment to our Constitution that limits the terms of the presidency to two.

"tingles" has brought this subject of FDR up before. FDR must know doubt be one of his personal heroes. However, he always fails to mention all the "love" for FDR in light of almost immediate action on the part of the American people after his death to ensure that we never ever have a president with as much power again.

Anecdotedly, my grandmother was enamored of FDR and thought he could do no wrong. She was a dimocrat until her dying day. I was too young to know any better when she was alive. I am sure that if I had brought up anything like what Powell has written, she would have probably disowned me! lol

In fact, in his own book, Basic Economics, Sowell arrives as much the same conclusions as Powell, but from a stricttly economic viewpoint.

Hey Tingles, try doing a little research...

---“We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work.”
----“I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises.”
---- “I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started. … And an enormous debt to boot!”

The words are those of none other than Henry Morgenthau Jr. — close friend, lunch companion, loyal secretary of the Treasury to President Franklin D. Roosevelt — and key architect of FDR’s New Deal.

They Can't Help It

Submitted by IrateNate on Thu, 08/04/2011 - 9:07pm.

These idiots think in opposites. "FDR saved capitalism..." by introducing socialism? Sort of like the way we "deal with" our $14.3 trillion debt...by adding $2.5 trillion more to it.

coming when it did and saving the economy. Because forcing 20% of the population into government service and having the rest of the work force producing "goods" no one but the government wants is exactly how capitalism should work. And don't forget the government rationing of food. That's always a good thing in Chrissy's world. Seriously, this guys leg tingle has gone to his brain.

Matthews upside down history.

Submitted by Boil It Down on Fri, 08/05/2011 - 2:47am.

Forty some odd years ago I was taught that FDR took us perilously close to losing capitalism. This was confirmed by my parents and grandparents with plenty of wonderment at people who still thought highly of FDR.  Aside from a few lunatics on the far left, I do not know of anyone who would believe that FDR saved capitalism.

Of course, this just another one of Matthews alternate reality blunders, displaying his comical ignorance of US history. He should write a book of humor: History According to Chris Matthews.

In the history of bad Presidents since that time, it goes FDR, Carter, Obama. -bidn-

Things that make ya go hmmmm

You've got to wonder how the msm, in the persons of people like matthews, maddow, shultz, etc., etc., etc. got to be so expert in so many fields. You name it, economics, history, theology, philosophy, sociology, any intellectual endeavor you care to name these script readers are just amazing in their collective level of expertise....I mean what a brain trust....and one completely sold out for a failed president and a failed political philosophy. These people love to sit around and label anyone who can't agree with them as rubes, non-readers, clingers, sluts, whores, terrorists and on and on and on.......all the while insisting, on the basis of their script reading, that they alone possess the intellectual gravitas to analyze and expound upon the various issues of the day in a manner that rightfully astounds the rest of us unwashed neanderthals out here in the real world.
Let's see the credentials....roll out the degrees....let's see where all this expertise springs from besides deer-in-the-headlights, mindless devotion to Liberalism and the sound of their own voices. And if any of these page readers really have any significant academic credentials apart from journalism, what's that say about the quality of the educational enterprise in this country?
Boobs. Utter boobs.
