Media Myth Debunked: Almost No Temperature Records Broken in Last Week's 'Record-Breaking Heat'

By Noel Sheppard | July 24, 2011 | 17:04

Noel Sheppard's picture

All last week, global warming-obsessed media were rife with reports about record-breaking heat.

Problem is, according to the National Climatic Data Center, and marvelously reported by the Hockey Schtick Sunday, almost no temperature records were actually broken:

[T]he NOAA database of all-time Max Temperature...shows that there were no records broken on July 17, July 18, July 19, or July 20th. A total of 4 stations broke records on July 21, 20 on July 22, and 10 on July 23, 2011.

That's right. There were only 34 new all-time daily temperature records set during last week's "record-breaking heat."

This is out of over 6000 records previously set for each day since such things have been reported.

For instance, the four set Thursday were out of 6,219 historically for that day. This represented only 0.06 percent.

On Friday, 20 records were set out of 6,108, or 0.3 percent.

As you can see, the actual records broken were statistically insignificant.

Yet a Google search of "record-breaking heat July 2011" produced almost 35 million results.

That's more than a million stories per new record set.

Seems the exaggeration at play is even greater than the number of Americans now claiming they attended Woodstock.

Makes you wonder if all these so-called journalists were smoking something last week as if they were still at Max Yasgur's farm.

It's July for crying out loud!

Submitted by MidAmerica on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 5:17pm.

As a gardener and a cyclist I am attuned to weather conditions on a daily basis.  I have ridden hundred milers in near 100 degree heat and the heat wasn't that much of a factor with me.  However, this past week I really toned down my riding and other outdoor activities because the HUMIDITY pushed the conditions into a dangerous zone.  If your sweat can't evaporate you can become dangerously overheated.. So I'm not so much waiting for the temperature to fall as I am the humidity.

I was thinking that.  The temperatures we've experienced in the Midwest and East are just an ordinary day in Phoenix.  BUT... it's the humidity that makes it a killer.  So I guess there needs to be a new class of alarmism... RISING HUMIDITY!  The crusade can be led by humidisists who fund scientists who will find after receiving funding for a few million dollars that yes indeed we are in a period of unprecedented rising humidity and if action isn't taken right away then the whole world is going to be covered in mold!  Not only that but instead of just that green stuff growing on the north side of your house, algae will be all over your house.  The cost for power washing the worlds houses will be in the billions so it will better to pay higher taxes now so the government can regulate humidity sources.

Actually, people have argued about rising humidity and moisture in the air due to global warming, but alas, even they were disparaged when they tried to explain it:

Submitted by dbo on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 9:30pm.

They have probably been disparaged because it's not true. Water vapor in the atmosphere is lower now than it was 23 years ago when the IPCC was created. The whole AGW theory is based upon the premise of a positive water vapor feedback. Without a positive water vapor feedback there is no scare. Why do you continue to embarrass yourself by propagating myths?

And while I'm bitchin' I might as well get it off my chest that you guys North of me torment us fine folks in the central Midwest with your horrific winter storms and it's just not funny so cut it out.

Here in the central Midwest we have a very pleasant temperate climate with a nice easy changes of seasons but the people outside of this area send us stuff that can just make life miserable.

sounds nice in San Diego......I lived in Florida for years, 70 degrees was only seen in January...lol. That's not completely true but not too far from the truth either. Summer nights in Fl might get to 75, so the weatherman said, but I've been up all 24 hours a day and 75 must have been those 3 seconds I napped.

I live now in Georgia after 50 years of Northern Indiana and 10 of Florida, and it has nice combination, cool nights, damn hot days but it lasts only June, July and August.. I used to measure Florida heat by stepping into the swimming pool.. if I stopped sweating when the water was at my knees, the day was so so, but if it stopped at my chest (usual July 4th) then it was hot.

High profile weather events which would seem to point toward global warming/climate change/climate disruption/whatever's next will never be overlooked by whichever of the combination "scientists", journalists, politicians or agenda-driven grant foundation moguls who are crying wolf.

In 2005 Hurricane Katrina and the record setting Atlantic Basin tropical storm season made headlines galore while the tornado season that same year, while perhaps more unprecedented, received nary a second glance. In 2005:

No fatalities from tornadoes anywhere in the U.S. in April and May - except for 1992 that hadn't happened since 1875. None in June or July either, no precedent since 1854 for May-July no fatalities anywhere in U.S. No Fujita Force Scale five events for six years, and it would take another two years for another.

You might add that the most deadly hurricane in US history was the 1900 Storm in Galveston, Texas. Six to eight thousand dead on the island and two thousand more on the mainland. What was then the largest city and most active port in Texas was devastated. My Greatgrandfather barely survived being washed across Galveston Bay in the middle of the night. His brother and family were all lost.

34 records out of over 6,000 is less that 1% of all the recorded records. Hardly a record-breaking stretch of temps. Last summer was relatively mild. This is all anecdotal to the AGW "debate." The real science doesn't support the Climate Hysterics.

I understand it perfectly. That may help explain the droughts seen in Texas, China, Somalia, Australia, and a few other places. But a heatwave is a localized phenomena. So on the one hand, while one heatwave itself is not proof of global warming, arguing that it was not record-breaking due to places unaffected is a stretch. Unless the argument is that a heatwave MUST affect every state in the union in order for it to be considered record breaking (which it would be), that's a very high standard to set.

Thanks to this Global Warming Heat Wave, us down here in south La have been enjoying temps in the 80's with 80% humidity. Been sitting on the porch swing enjoying our burst of AGW!

Several posters have tried to explain to these nutjobs that certain data cannot be included in the "scientific computer models" since that data does not fit in the model. As I have posted a number of times, having lived through 6 decades of "climate change", the factor that is never included in any of these "models" is the one where the effects of increasing technology, like A/C, has changed our lifestyles. Much of the fear mongering about AGW is from simple spoiled brats.

A neighbor has a nice front porch with a swing and chairs. No one else on the block has anything like it and many people stop by and chat with the elder homeowners. I sit out with the mister and chew the fat most months of the year warm or cold. It is very enjoyable time watching the grass grow and talking about anything and everything.

What you have to take into account is not the 6000 stations around the country, its the many stations locally reporting in your area. Over the past 4 days, 34

Submitted by stratman on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 6:38pm.

Over the past 4 days, 34 stations out over slightly more than 6000 total stations nationwide recorded new record high temperatures. For 4 days prior to that there were no record high temperatures. Yet the MSM hyped the heat as if records were shattering across most of the country. There has been precious little cogent balance to the reporting, mostly just reminding us ad nauseum of how hot things are.

This morning I tuned to CBS's morning show where they had a "skit" about the weather, making sure to frighten people not only with the humidity factored in "feels like" temperature, but also that all the humidity - representing a column of 1200 gallons of water over every single home in the city (or was it the USA?) - was directly caused by GLOBAL WARMING! They explained that all the carbon in the air led to increased retention of water which we call humidity.

I recall that the MSM used to push the concept of El Nino / La Nina for a number of years but have stopped now that Global Warming is their Progressive cause. Also, no mention that it is summer and that high humidity and high temperatures have happened in other decades besides now and 1995 (the Left's convenient tunnel vision talking point to further the AGW myth).

Do you and yours often re-enact the drowning scene in "Diabolique"? Sounds - er - entertaining...

not the Sharon Stone remake.

BTW...I highly recommend "Leave Her to Heaven"--little known but a very entertaining and occasionally disturbing thriller starring Cornel Wilde, Jeanne Crain and Gene Tierney as a ravishing, seductive psychopath involved in one of the more chilling drowning scenes in cinematic history. It was released in 1945, brilliant technicolor, TCM airs it every two or three years.

I don't agree with you much on politics or media bias, but I'm with you on movies. "Leave Her to Heaven" is great. I watched it about six months ago for I think the third time. The lush color palette alone makes it worth watching. It has a lot of style. The evil juxtaposed against the prettiness made it even more disturbing (especially for it's time) than it would have been without it.

So you're all "hot & bothered" by the 34 heat records, and the hysterics are pounding Senator Inhofe about the heat in his home state Oklahoma.

Just five months ago, on February 10, 2011 (that's right, that's THIS year), an Oklahoma station's thermometer dipped to 31 below, an ALL TIME state record. Several other Oklahoma stations beat the old record that day, just not by as much.

Submitted by Giygas on Mon, 07/25/2011 - 1:39pm.

Oklahoma may have had its all-time lowest temperature of -31 degrees Fahrenheit in February 2011. But the monthly average temperature for Oklahoma in February was near-normal. This summer, in contrast, is much more anomalous than last winter in Oklahoma. Last june was Oklahoma's 2nd hottest on record. And this July may turn out to be the hottest July on record for the state.

Record daily highs are

Submitted by Giygas on Mon, 07/25/2011 - 1:28pm.

Record daily highs are different from all-time highs. A record daily high is the highest temperture recorded on a specific date at a locality. An all-time high is the highest temperature ever recorded at a locality. 2,100 daily record high maximum temperatures and 4,734 daily record high mininum temperatures were broken so far this month. 55% of these records were set in the past week, showing that the heat wave was exceptional. Exceptionally high overnight lows are part of trend that began in the 1970s when the average temperature started to rise. This July is shaping up to being one of the top-five hottest Julys in U.S. history.

Los Angeles had an all time high record last year, why, because they moved the thermometer.

There are many, many ,many more stations, l with added heat issues.

If you are going to only talk about locality then let me throw in these numbers. At the Baton Rouge station, the average high for July is 91. So far this July, the average temperature has been 89.  We have had 17 days below average temperature and we have another week to go.

We are enjoying one of the coolest Julys in my memory.

As I posted on another thread, numbers can be used to skew any argument.

Even though it has rained 20 of 26 days in July, we are still 12-14" below normal rainfall. With this tropical wave of moisture,  which may last though August, we may have enough rain to send a little your way. Note, not til the end of August. Sorry, we need our mud ya' know...;-)

How to deal with hot weather

Submitted by Unsane on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 7:16pm.

The cause of the hot weather, which broke records at 0.4% of weather stations nationwide, is a phenomenon called July.  You couldn't hack TX, that's for damn sure.

And IF this July is one of the top-five hottest ones in recorded history - so what?

Crank the A/C, grab some cold water, dress lightly.  And for Shahinshah's sake, quit whining.

Crank that AC while you can. In 10, maybe even 5 years the government will be controlling our energy use outright or through regs that don't allow enough electricity for us to use our AC.

Crank it while you can.
