Time's Joe Klein: Obama's 'Winning' Debt Ceiling Debate - Americans Understand 'Eat Your Peas'

By Noel Sheppard | July 17, 2011 | 15:54

Time magazine's Joe Klein said this weekend that President Obama "is winning" the debt ceiling debate.

Klein told his fellow panelists on the syndicated "Chris Matthews Show," "He is coming across as the most reasonable guy in a crazy city...When he says things like 'Eat your peas,' that's language Americans can understand" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JOE KLEIN, TIME: Can I just say - he's winning this thing. I mean really. He is coming across as the most reasonable guy…

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Because?

KLEIN: …in a crazy city.

MATTHEWS: How so?

KLEIN: Because he seems reasonable.

GLORIA BORGER, CNN: He put a deal on the table.

KLEIN: And, and, when he says things like “Eat your peas,” that's language Americans can understand.

KELLY O’DONNELL, NBC NEWS: People do like that.

KLEIN: The real important thing to understand about the whole debt ceiling business is that no one in America really knows what it means and they care less about it. They care about the economy and jobs.

BORGER: Well, they care about Social Security.

KLEIN: He seems to be a guy who's trying to do, well they don't understand that's a consequence. They didn't understand it until this week.

MATTHEWS: It's coming.

Oh yeah - Obama looked so good telling Republicans, "Eat your peas."

That's language Americans can understand, especially coming weeks after he told them his young daughters behave better than they do.

I guess to a shill like Klein, that's coming across as "reasonable" - talking to political leaders on the other side of the aisle like they're children.

Somehow I doubt Klein would be so approving of a Republican president talking this way to Democrats.

This is what the American people are subject to in their daily injestion of political discourse; is it any wonder we are in the condition we are in. This media can't delve into the pure facts of what's being discussed, they have to prop up the puppet president whose incapable of telling the truth. To him, every news conference, is a play, with three acts, and he's the solo performer. I hear nothing, I see nothing, and I say absolutely nothing.

House Committee on the Budget's take on O'bummer's fiscal policies or how to bankrupt a entire country in 2 1/2 years:

A Brief History of President Obama’s Fiscal Record
Setting the Record Straight
July 15, 2011

Despite newfound concern with the debt overhang stifling economic growth, President Obama’s record falls far short of his rhetoric. Let’s review the decisions made by President Obama and Congressional Democrats over the past couple of years, and the disappointing results of their policy choices:

January 20, 2009
President Obama sworn into office
•
President tells the American people in his Inaugural Address: “Those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account, to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day, because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.”

•
Debt Held By Public = $6.31 trillion

February 17, 2009
President Signs into Law the Spending Stimulus
•
The stimulus adds $821 billion in new spending according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

•
The White House promises this infusion of spending and borrowing would keep unemployment rate below 8%. As millions of Americans are painfully aware, that promise was broken.

•
Debt Held by Public = $6.48 trillion

February 26, 2009
President Issues FY2010 Budget
•
The President’s budget adds $2.7 trillion in new debt in FY2010 and imposes $1.4 trillion in new taxes.

•Debt Held by Public = $6.58 trillion

March 11, 2009
President Signs FY2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act
•
The massive spending bill includes 8,696 earmarks at a cost of $11 billion.

•
The spending bill adds $19 billion in new spending above the baseline – an 8.6% spending increase.

•
Debt Held by Public = $6.66 trillion

April 29, 2009
Congressional Democrats Pass FY2010 Budget
•
The Congressional Democrats’ budget calls for a $2 trillion debt increase in 2010, and another 8.9% increase in non-defense discretionary spending.

•
The reconciliation process is abused to later pave the way for health care overhaul to be jammed into law.

•
Of note: this is the last time Congressional Democrats will bother budgeting.

•
Debt Held by Public = $6.85 trillion

February 2, 2010
President Issues FY2011 Budget
•
The President’s budget more than doubles the debt; pushes the FY2011 deficit to a new record of $1.6 trillion; drives spending to a new record of $3.8 trillion in fiscal year 2011; and raises taxes by more than $2 trillion through 2020, under the administration’s own estimates.

•
Debt Held by Public = $7.85 trillion

March 23, 2010
President Signs Health-Care Overhaul Into Law
•
The massive new law adds $1.4 trillion in new spending over the next decade, and over $2.5 trillion once the law is fully implemented.

•
Despite sluggish economic growth and high unemployment, the law imposes over $500 billion in new tax hikes. CBO Director Elmendorf would later testify that the law would reduce employment by roughly half a percent – a reduction of approximately 800,000 jobs.

•
Debt Held by Public = $8.18 trillion

April 15, 2010
Congressional Democrats Decide Not to Do a Budget for FY2011
•
The 1974 Budget Act requires Congress to pass a budget each year by April 15.

•
In addition to heightened regulatory uncertainty, the massive new law adds $10.2 billion in new spending.

•
Debt Held by Public = $8.69 trillion

February 14, 2011
President Issues FY2012 Budget
•
The President’s budget yet again calls for the doubling of the debt in five years, and tripling the debt in ten years.

•
The President’s budget spends $47 trillion over the next decade, imposes over $1 trillion in new tax hikes, and fails to address the drivers of the debt.

•
Debt Held by Public = $9.45 trillion

April 13, 2011
President Delivers Speech on Deficit Reduction
•
The President appears to abandon his own budget by offering a ‘framework’ that calls for additional tax increases, defense spending cuts, and Medicare price controls – yet lacks sufficient detail to back-up claims of deficit reduction.

•
Debt Held by Public = $9.65 trillion

April 15, 2011
House Passes FY2012 Budget Resolution
•
The House-passed budget cuts $6.2 trillion in government spending over the next decade, saves Medicare, strengthens the social safety net, lifts the crushing burden of debt, and spurs economic growth and job creation.

•
Senate Democrats fail to meet their legal requirement to pass a budget by April 15.

Medicare and Social Security Trustees Issue Warning of Looming Insolvency
•
According to the programs’ own trustees, the unsustainable future of Medicare and Social Security threatens the health and retirement security of America’s seniors.

•
President Obama and Congressional Democrats continue to engage in a partisan campaign to attack efforts to save and strengthen these critical programs – while offering no serious solutions of their own.

•
Debt Held by Public = $9.67 trillion

May 25, 2011
Senate Unanimously Rejects President’s FY2012 Budget; Vote is 97-0
•
While the President’s plan to accelerate our nation toward bankruptcy is unanimously rejected, the stunt on the Senate floor reveals the bankruptcy of Senate Democrats’ ideas.

•
Senate Democrats have still not proposed any budget.

•
Debt Held by Public = $9.72 trillion

June 23, 2011
CBO Director Further Discredits President’s Fiscal Record
•
In testimony before the House Budget Committee, CBO Director Doug Elmendorf responds to questions on the President’s ‘Framework’: “We don’t estimate speeches. We need much more specificity than was provided in that speech for us to do our analysis.”

•
Debt Held by Public = $9.74 trillion

Debt Held by Public = $9.75 trillion

July 11, 2011
Senator Conrad Gives Budget Speech on Senate Floor
•
On Day 803 since the Senate last passed a budget, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad takes to the Senate floor to deliver a speech about the Senate Democrats’ non-existent budget resolution.

•
Senator Conrad makes the case for imposing over $2 trillion in new taxes, but provides no actual budget resolution and no credible details.

•
Debt held by Public = $9.75 trillion

July 15, 2011
President Holds Press Conference: “We’re Running Out of Time” to Deal with Debt
•
President Obama tells reporters: “I've got reams of paper and printouts and spreadsheets on my desk, and so we know how we can create a package that solves the deficits and debt for a significant period of time. But in order to do that, we got to get started now.”

•
The American people have still not seen any “paper” or “printouts” of what specific spending cuts the President supports. The American people have still not seen any “spreadsheets” from the White House to corroborate their claims of having offered a deficit reduction plan.

•
While it’s long past time for Washington “to get started now” on tackling our debt problems, President Obama has still not proposed a credible budget, and Senate Democrats have still not proposed any budget.

•
Debt Held by Public = $9.75 trillion

When you eat peas it means either you bought them or somebody else did. It also means that you can't keep putting your peas on a credit card forever without paying it off. If you don't then the peas will become very expensive because of interest payments. Our government has been doing too much pea buying without any cash in their pockets. The chickens are coming home to roost, and they don't like to eat peas.

The Fecalization of MSNBC

Submitted by Hausmaus on Sun, 07/17/2011 - 6:44pm.

If you have ever tuned in to MSNBC, and observe Chris Mathews blasting away at the Conservatives, or Repubicans, better yet Fox News, the man just can't go one night without saying something derrogatory towards the opposition. I strongly suggest to the powers that be at MSNBC to change their programing exclusively to game shows, and nothing else. And, to do this on a 24/7 basis. MSNBC has flushed itself so far down the provervial crap hole that they will soon reach China. Never in the history of American Television have we seen a network like MSNBC, solely dedicated to human waste journalism of the crappiest kind. I don't want to name names, but most of the invited guests on your panels are not that well educated folk, and makes the network look evern shiettier. So, with this in mind take my word and just stay away from journalism, leave it to people like "Fox", they know how to deliver news instead of your buoyant fecal matter.

But don't YOU think about eating like that!!!!

You 'detest' peas??? That's a strong word!!! What did those peas ever do to you??? But that's OK.........I don't care for Brussel sprouts too much, and I really don't like eggplant. And, yes, I detest liver - although I don't eat much meat anyway.

killa you kill me - too extreme???

Submitted by amyshulk on Mon, 07/18/2011 - 1:25am.

I feel ill when I attempt to eat peas, so yeah, I hate that feeling of wanting to vomit ;-P Same goes for liver - pretty much any mushy food. When fishing for dinner in Bermuda I ate a LOT of mushy fish, blech. But the taters "n" onions I had with them were divine!!! I can't stand eggplant either, but I love brussel sprouts!

Fry up taters or mash 'em - I'm not picky, I've even been known to eat them raw - that's the *only* reason it sounds tasty to me. That and I'm hungry right now!

As to the "Do as I say, not as I do" attitude prevalent amongst our "public servants/their spouses/lackeys"? I think they all believe they didn't have to learn life lessons like the rest of us - that they were born knowing more/better than the rest of us - so they forget the process and lack empathy. This precedes arrogance, and is it's root cause IMO.

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Jane Harman (D-Calif)
John Kerry (D-Mass)
Herb Kohl (D-Wis)
The late (Thank GOD) Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass) Whose estate is trying to screw MA out of taxes on their beloved Cape Cod Compound by donating it to the Kennedy Foundation... Or any other Kennedy criminal.
Jay Rockefeller (D-WVa) Or any Big Oil 'Fella?
Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif) Who looks like a cracked up CC Deville from Poison...
Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Most expensive places to live in the US: Cape Cod, Beverley Hills: 90% democrat.
Public Servants? HA!

Billionaire Democrat: Warren Buffet.
Billionaire: George Sorros.
Sergey Brin, Democrat, Billionaire.
Larry Page, Democrat, Billionaire
Charles Koch, Democrat, Billionaire
Kirk Kerkorian, Democrat, Billionaire
Abigail Johnson, Democrat, Billionaire
Ballmer, Steven, Democrat, Billionaire

Why are democrats not considered the party of the rich and elite?

For those dems who inherited their wealth, why aren't they donating it or "redisributing" it? And why are the most expensive places to live, nearly all democrat? Why are most billionaires in the US democrats?

What exactly is their "Fair Share"? Oh yeah, the BUSH tax rates!!!!!

Don't forget Leona "little people pay taxes" Helmsley.

She was reportedly a huge Democrat contributor.

"FAIR SHARE" is just code for "but mommy, Jimmy gets to, has more, etc" and I cringe whenever I hear it and tend to tune out any other words that come out of that person's mouth.

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Hey, I happen to like peas! My favorite going out meal:

Submitted by jawebster1 on Mon, 07/18/2011 - 3:02am.

6 oz petite steak, baked potato and peas with sour dough bread. Now if the Liar-in-Chief had said eat your "spinach", I'd say, no thanks.

He can't even get it right when he tries to name a food that's good for you, but tastes bad.

Just like when he said, "Call my bluff!" What a dumb thing to say. He knows nothing about poker. You never say "Call my bluff!", because then you're telling everyone that you're bluffing.

The opposing player may say, "I'll call your bluff!" and that's what the Republicans should do.

Yeah, but Jim...........he

Submitted by killa37 on Mon, 07/18/2011 - 4:03am.

Yeah, but Jim...........he didn't have his teleprompter in the room - and probably not even his earpiece - and he was irritated at actually having to DO SOMETHING that resembles 'work'...........and these damn Republicans weren't bowing down to him......and he flipped the bird to Cantor, but that didn't do any good.......and Moooooooooooooochelle was paging him to come home and eat some peas............and 'fix the damn hole' in the budget...........and he was trying to remember some line from an old John Wayne movies where he could sound tough............so he blurted out 'don't call my bluff', and then stomped out of there like the petulant little prick that he really is!!!!!

Can you imagine being in 'negotiations' with this dope??? I think Boehner nailed it with the 'jello' reference, although I don't know why ol' Bonehead isn't throwing that jello all over the floor, and making the Dems clean it up!!! And I wonder what purpose Joe 'Plugs' Biden serves in there??? Jeeeez............the blind leading the naked!!!!! The bland leading the bland!!! The dopes leading the idiots!!! These guys make the cast of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' look normal.................

Joe Klein must have gone to

Submitted by mikeinnv on Mon, 07/18/2011 - 9:34pm.

Joe Klein must have gone to the same school of politicking as Barack Obama.
He thinks that if he just says it, then people will believe it. Per Klein, "He is coming across as the most reasonable guy in a crazy city...'Eat your peas', That's language Americans can understand."

So, Mr. Klein, what Americans are you referring to? I need names. And Ms. O'Donnell? You agreed with Klein's stupid comment by saying "People do like that." Which people like that? Some names from you too, please. Wait. Maybe I'm not giving them credit. Perhaps Klein and O'Donnell went out onto the streets and asked many many people how they felt about Obama telling them to eat their peas. If those two actually did just that, then I apologize. But I still want names. You see what I'm getting at? Commentators like Klein and O'Donnell are insulting us all because they think we are sooooooooo ignorant.

These two hacks must have passed out with joy when their idol, Obama, stated recently that 80% of Americans want higher taxes, and they figure if he can tell a whopper like that one, they can too.
