HBO 'Real Time' Guests Discuss Having Violent Hate Sex With Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum
Potentially the most vile political discussion ever aired on national television occurred on Friday's HBO program "Real Time."
After former Air America comedian Marc Maron said he wanted to have violent hate sex with Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), sex advice columnist Dan Savage said he'd like to do the same to Rick Santorum (video follows with transcript and commentary, extreme vulgarity warning):

For those that likely don't know what "santorum" is, the Urban Dictionary defines it as "The frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex."
And this is what is now acceptable talk about conservatives on national television.
To give you an idea how vile this was, even the perilously liberal Mediaite - run by ex-MSNBCer Dan Abrams - was displeased:
Maher’s panel put together one of the raunchiest segments we’ve seen on his program…and for a show that’s on HBO and has done this, that’s saying something...Even though it was his intention, Maron took things too far for us there: that line was just too reminiscent of this whole thing.
Indeed. For those that have forgotten, Playboy writer Guy Cimbalo in June 2009 published a list of conservative women he'd like to have hate sex with, and got a lot of heat for it.
Now, two years later, folks on national television discussed doing so not just with a conservative woman but also a conservative man, both of whom running for president.

Let's see, that Maher show is on HBO a subscription cable channel. In my area it is $15 bucks a month. Then, I get to watch movies on their schedule. Yeah, they have trash like the Maher show, but people used to pay the subscription for the movies.
Now, they just subscribe to NetFlix. $8 bucks a month and you get to watch the movies when you want. If you haven't notice the meteroic rise in its stock, Internet service providers note that it is the bulk of the prime-time traffic on the Internet.
All that is left for the likes of HBO is the going out of business sign instead of programming like the corner Blockbuster in my neighborhood did not long ago.
So, no matter how trashy or vile you make your show Maher, nobody is watching.

I've been with DirecTV for almost 10 years. We live beyond the reach of cable and the old antenna even had a hard time bringing in "local" channels. Since about year 6 they have given us a reward of sorts for being loyal customers. One year I got 3 months of HBO for free. I'll bet I didn't watch it for more than 10 hours during that time. It's mainly because I don't like current movies, or their mouthy liberal "stars."
During that free trial I was never tempted to watch Maher. I don't understand why anyone adult would. As much as Red Eye lampoons public figures, I've never heard them say anything remotely as crude as the hyena quotes that I read about Maher's show on this website.

I got rid of HBO a long time ago, as well as Showtime for this very reason. I decided that any movie I may watch was not worth feeding their coffers, and allow this type of filth in my home. Issue is, that young folks today of course find this amusing. Shows the loss of values and morals that are now the norm in society today.

One of the TV morning "news" shows just had a street feature concert with this guy & his fans camped out 2 days to get a good seat. Fox news went in the crowd and showed young female fans the very bruised up face of his girlfriend and got their response. They pretty much defended him as she had it coming. The last lady was honest and seemed to feel ashamed she was helping sponsor this "star."

In Bosnia and Rwanda, the label for this kind of 'political statement' was rape. How much outrage would there be if say any comedian or talk show host that wasn't a flaming liberal said anything even slightly untoward or remotely close to wanting to have violent sex with Michelle Obama, Nancy Pelosi or any democratic elected official, the firestorm that would erupt from the liberal media establishment and mob would be deafening, and rightly so. But their silence or lackadaisical response when one of their own does it, speaks volumes who these people really are. What is it going to take for regular Americans to wake up and strike back at the media, the entertainment community, academia, unions and their politicians to stop this nation from sliding into the liberal cesspool any further. It needs to be done not only at the voting booth but also at the cash register. If these people feel brave enough to talk this way in the street, then we deal with it in the street as well.

HBO also has Game of Thrones - it was so good, I bought the books and am halfway through book 2.
Bill Maher gets no play from me, but I don't want to silence him, I'm just waiting for him to step off the chair, and destroy his own career.

I am about 50 pages into Book 4. Not going well. After the first three books w/all the same characters, Book 4 goes off on a totally different direction. It's kind of disconcerting...but I'll keep reading. His 5th book came out 5 days ago.
What a totally awesome series. And as you well know, the film adaptation is sublime. That is something that only HBO can do these days, which is why, even though I loathe Maher, I still have HBO and watch it. There are other good series, too, I love Entourage...and there have been many others, too.
Anyway, I am hoping Jon Snow and Arya make it through to the end, and that Nymeria finds Arya. So far, no joy.

Blonde - Arya is my favorite character, followed by Bran and then Tyrion. HBO did an excellent job on this show - I almost didn't read the books because I was afraid how I'd envisioned the players/field wouldn't be how they showed it, but as you said, sublime!!!
True Blood is based off of Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris - I've read and re-read the novels and think HBO did an excellent job with it too.
I also love Entourage. I loved Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and Big Love. Dennis Miller Live, Oz & Deadwood were my favorite.
Since HBO is pay cable, they are much freer to explore and show alternate realities. IMO The problem lies with those who believe these alternate realities should be exalted, and think public policy should be based on them - as in Big Love. The rest of us just enjoy good stories superbly depicted.
