Charles Krauthammer Accuses Press of 'Accepting Every Leak Out of the White House'
Charles Krauthammer on Friday marvelously demonstrated just how in the pockets of Barack Obama America's news media are.
After claiming on PBS's "Inside Washington" that we now have a "completely compliant, pliant, supine press accepting every leak out of the White House," he silenced the entire panel by asking them to name one specific cut to entitlements the President has proposed (video follows with transcript and commentary):
CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: [The President] talks a good game. “Oh, I’m prepared to do entitlements, I’m ready to do entitlements.” Not once has he ever enunciated in public - other than all these leaks which I don’t trust for half a second – one structural change in entitlements, and without that, everybody over the age of nine knows we are not going to get a handle on the debt. So let’s hear him say it in public once.
NINA TOTENBERG, NPR: So why is it when he offered the big deal, the $4 trillion deal…
GORDON PETERSON, HOST: The grand bargain.
TOTENBERG: …the grand bargain, Republicans backed away from it?
KRAUTHAMMER: When did he offer that?
TOTENBERG: He offered that last week.
KRAUTHAMMER: Where?
TOTENBERG: In, he did it, publicly and in negotiations.
KRAUTHAMMER: In your leaks? What’s in the $4 trillion?
TOTENBERG: But Charles.
KRAUTHAMMER: Give me a number. Explain to me what’s in it.
TOTENBERG: Why is it, in two, in matter of two days, Republicans backed away from that and said we don’t want it?
KRAUTHAMMER: You accept everything he says, a $4 trillion deal, if you don’t have a single item in it that you can enunciate.
TOTENBERG: Well, I’m not at the table. Perhaps you are, but I’m not.
KRAUTHAMMER: Well then how does he expect America to accept something in which he explains nothing?
TOTENBERG: He actually said I’m going to get heat from my own people.
Moments later when others on the panel continued with similar rhetoric concerning the President’s so-called plan to reduce entitlement spending, Krauthammer struck again:
KRAUTHAMMER: My colleagues are demonstrating a point I’ve been trying to make about how you have a completely compliant, pliant, supine press accepting every leak out of the White House. Tell me, we have been told, I’ve heard it again and again that the President’s prepared to do, to make cuts in entitlements. Name me one.
PETERSON: Charles, a complete and compliant supine press. I love that.
KRAUTHAMMER: Yeah.
PETERSON: Let’s move along.
KRAUTHAMMER: I’ve got, I’ve got other adjectives, but we’re short on time.
PETERSON: Yes, and we have to keep it on the air.
Once again, Krauthammer demonstrated a fabulous point.
For weeks the media have been telling Americans the President's big budget plan offered cuts in entitlements, but none of them can actually name what those cuts are.
Seems like that would be an important part of a report on spending cuts - specifically identifying what was going to be cut and by how much.
But that hasn't been important to the Obama-loving media during this debt ceiling debate.
If the President says his plan includes cuts to entitlements, that's good enough for them.

This was talked about on Rush's show yesterday or today. Apparently Jake Tapper kept asking Obama in the presser to name one thing he was willing to cut, and Obama kept answering "I will....[eventually, I guess] and....but...the Republicans etc., we have to, etc.etc. no matter how many times Tapper asked the question. He never named a single cut; just kept promising that he would.

A bit off-topic but: The budget “negotiations” (and I use that word in all sarcasm) are no longer about the financial health of our nation. They are now all about Obama’s saving face.
So I propose that the Republican’s resubmit the Ryan plan, but just rename it “The Biden Plan.” That would allow the relatively few sane democrats remaining in the House and Senate to get onboard as well as giving the supreme mullah an easy out. Of course “Mr. Peas” will claim it was his plan all along, but so what? The truth will eventually come out.

Reforming the Medicaid program. --- "The president's framework would replace the current complicated federal matching formulas with a single matching rate for all program spending..." ---- And this would save one nickel how?
Cutting unnecessary prescription drug spending. --- Oh my, you will cut unnecessary spending to save us money? Anyone ever look up the word unnecessary before? It takes a budget fight, a near crisis on debt levels to figure out that we might wanna cut unnecessary stuff out? 14 Trillion dollars in the hole and someone says, say, let's cut out that unnecessary spending. After all, it is not all that necessary right? I mean, that is what the un is for, right?
Reducing abuse and increasing accountability in Medicaid and Medicare. --- Here we go again with reducing waste, fraud, and abuse. Again, this takes a budget fight, a looming government shutdown, the possible collapse of the western world because we may not pay our bills, it takes a crisis for this guy to say, hey, let's stop people ripping us off, mmmmkay? Bull. It did not work in the arguments for Obamacare, it don't work now. You don't need to stop waste, fraud, and abuse as an excuse to save money.

In any event, my rejoinder is brief. I regrettably do not currently have a subscription to the WSJ, but I do not question the inability of the CBO to properly score Obama's plan enunciated in April. However, as I read the transcript, that was technically not what the Hammer was demanding, i.e. a comprehensive proposal sufficiently detailed to enable CBO scoring, but rather a request to provide a single number related to a specific item which Obama had put on the table with respect to entitlement reduction. I believe that challenge was met with the Medicaid example.

Submitted by bkeyser on Sat, 07/16/2011 - 10:59am.
Ed Morrissey had a great column the other day asking the basic question: If no deal is a catastrophe, then why is a short-term deal unacceptable? Jake Tapper echoed this somewhat in his questioning of Jay Carney yesterday, though as you'd expect, Carney filibustered and Jake eventually backed off without a real soundbite quote. Here's the transcript.
But it's still the best question out there. As Verum Serum notes, the average debt-ceiling increase -relative to time- has been about 8 months for the last 6 increases- all during the Democratically-controlled Congress of Pelosi and Reid. Additionally, all six, including the three Obama has already signed, passed without tax increases. Yet now Obama is insisting on a debt-increase large enough to fund the government for 18 months so that it won't interfere with the general election.
So, which is worse? Failing to come to an agreement and running a budget shortfall around mid-August? Or, reaching a agreement now and having to have this same conversation again in roughly 8 months? Obama seems to think that having this convesration again in 8 months could be damaging to his re-election chances, so he's rather "default" (as he and his allies in the press call it) now. This is, in every way possible, a battle with a president wholly unserious about dealing with the real issues of spending and debt; this president is willing to sell America short -and then campaign on it being Republicans fault- for his chance to reside four more years on Pennsylvania Avenue.
What's he going to cut?

there are many of you newsbuster types who don't care for Dr. K. because he doesn't support your Princess Sarah. now I like Palin just fine, but I know, as Charles knows, that running her for president would be suicidal to our cause. we MUST MUST MUST have a new president in 2012. all else pales in comparison to that. Charles understands that, and he (and I) would like to find someone who could actually win a general election.
Oh?

Care to explain what's so "suicidal" about Palin? Kraut said something similar but also neglected to mention -- specifically -- what's so wrong with her. So did Geo. Will. I think those guys don't like Sarah because she's not part of the NE Snot Establishment, but that's just my opinion.
Romney and those like him would just be Bush III. They're part of the same Establishment, averse to any true person of the people. Will sneered at Reagan for "laziness," since Will has never run anything, either, and has no idea how to handle big egos or get them to do things.
Reagan won the Cold War without George Will's help. Palin is in Reagan's mold. No, not "another Reagan." IN THAT MOLD. Palin as president would galvanize the Left, pull them rampaging into the streets, and that's precisely what's needed. We no longer need doubt the Left's intentions, as we did 40 years ago.
Mitt Romney would continue to pussyfoot with the destructive, America-hating Left. I don't think Sarah Palin would. Nor would America stand for that again. Now that Obama, Pelosi and Reid have made it clear just what they have in mind for us -- poverty, criminality, black racism, hatred of all for all, paid for by normal Americans -- we can fight back with a clear conscience.

The truth
Submitted by ironchefofmunchies on Sat, 07/16/2011 - 11:40am.
The truth is the press CAN'T name one cut to entitlements (even though they've already been leaked that information) because as soon as they name an entitlement to be cut-Obama's approval will take a hit from that group.
Thus, the press will NOT report that information, even going so far as to look THIS stupid (if you haven't watched clip-please do) rather than saying anything that might harm this President's re-election.
This is really an indictment of how badly the press looks down on the public and the public's intelligence. The fact that the press has sold out "journalism" is actually secondary.
Once the public realizes how much the media hates them-then the second fact becomes meaningless. The media's spell on the public will be broken.
The truth is the public doesn't NEED the media to bring us the news anymore. The public can now go get the news themselves. The gates have been breached, yet the gatekeepers are oblivious.

I have many more, but I have visited this site off and on for over 5 years,. I know your track record and I will not waste another minute of my time on you other than to say you are Newsbusters' Alan Colmes..
Gee, milo...

I apologize for my incredibly rude request and for the apparent imposition upon your very valuable time. I appreciate the link.
Jer
update. Wow...I note a total of five whole comments in your archives. I guess your time IS quite valuable. But, I must say, the ones I read were well-articulated. You should post more often.

You are as I remember you. First you challenge, then you piut on the velvet glove, then you compliment. Nice courtroom technique. You have(had?) won over a host of friends here last time I looked--(quite some time ago).
Sweet talk the folks you have challenged, stroke them and admit they have some good points, yada ., yada.
When done, you still come across as Alan Colmes. I don't come her to check often, but I do recall that Matthew Dean did not buy into your gamesmanship. He challenged you daily. I, on the other hand , do have plenty of other things to do than to humor the prez of the Jer club.
Perhaps some of your longtime loyal conservative fans can provide more information on the IBM/Obama deal for you.
I, most likely, will not be back to the site to peek for a few weeks. So, have fun you slick devil.

I've been asked for links more times than I can count during my years at NB. I don' complain about it--except in the rare instances when it's solely for the purpose of harrassment--and gladly comply whenever I can. I likewise request links on occasion and generally try to ask in a polite manner. [Out of curiosity, was it the "Please" or the "Thanks" which you found especially offputting?]
But, that's how I was brought up: small town southern etiquette of the 50s and 60s. Perhaps your obnoxious boorishness is more of a natural generational and/or regional idiosyncrasy. So, I want hold it against you.
By the way, check your PMs in a day or so. You may be in for a shock with respect to your "gamesmanship....prez of the Jer club" assumptions.

Having given the question some considerable thought, it may be that the composite characteristics of several individuals would best illustrate an appropriate comparative self-portrait: the endearing wit and common sense of a Will Rogers, the passionate political advocacy of a Thomas Paine, the towering brilliance of a John Stuart Mill, the theological intellectualism of a C. S. Lewis, the healthy skepticism of an H. L. Mencken, and the comfortable array of endless perks available 24/7 to Mr. Brad Pitt.
Colmes nauseates me.

but he's stated multiple times now that tax increases are a necessary component to any debt-limit increase. He's put himself firmly in the camp of commentators who now want the Republicans to produce a short-term deal that raises the ceiling. It's a decent idea, but the rationale behind this seems to be "Well, we're putting forth a plan and the Dems/Obama just keep saying no. There's no way the media can blame us for that."
Uh, think again.
The fact is Republicans are terrified of the media/Obama complex. Every time Obama and the Dems haul out the "granny won't get her Medicare and SS checks", "the end times will happen if the gov't shuts down" scare tactics, the GOP folds up like an accordion. It's like football, if you have a play that the defense can't stop, then you run it over and over again until the other team shows they can stop it.
Since Obama wants to take his case to the public, then we should take Obama up on that. No more closed-door negotiations, nationally televised talks out in the open. If he's not going to honor the private talks with these repeated leaks, then neither will we. Repeatedly, aggressively challenge Obama and Senate Dems to produce a plan, and offer a short-term deal with no tax increases and specific, significant, IMMEDIATE spending cuts to raise the debt ceiling by a modest amount.

After grousing and moaning about Pubs not putting anything specific on the table, Obama hasn't put anything specific on the table in over 800 days. He wants the Pubs to do that, so the press can shout and heave about how the Pubs want to starve [name your group] or deprive [name another group].
Obama does not negotiate in good faith. He is as sorry at negotiating as at any other skill a president should have. He hates America and doesn't WANT to make a deal, being perfectly content if we just drift slowly right over the falls, laughing at us all the while sending Michelle on expensive vacations, courtesy of the taxpayer.
This isn't Dem vs Pub, or even liberal vs Conservative. It's America lovers vs America haters. You don't get to stand "somewhere between," because there is no between.

If the media had done it's job Obama never would have been president. If they made 1/10th the effort investigating Obama as they did investigating Bush and rehashing decades old issues such as his time in the Air National Guard, Obama would never have made it past the New Hampshire primary.
