'Countdown to U.S. Debt Default' Clock at ABCNews.com

By Noel Sheppard | July 09, 2011 | 15:31

It's one thing to report dishonestly. It's another to proudly display it.

The front page of the ABC "World News" website now contains a "Countdown to U.S. Debt Default' clock:

As NewsBusters reported Thursday, the Treasury is expecting to take in $172 billion in tax receipts in August.

As the total interest due on our nation's debt will likely not be greater than $35 billion, we will bring in almost five times as much in taxes which means there will not be a debt default.

To suggest otherwise is just a flat out lie.

For a leading American "news" organization to be publicly counting down to something that won't happen is really the height of dishonesty.

ABC should be ashamed of itself, as should Diane Sawyer.

ABC- Ashamed? Diane Sawyer - Ashamed?

Submitted by Herbster on Sat, 07/09/2011 - 4:13pm.

The above oxymorons are self explanatory. Is anyone really surprised at ABC/Sawyer pimping for obambi? This is the same Diane Sawyer, who, while promoting her upcoming "Special" on Fox with Bill O'Reilly stated that she is NOT a liberal - just reports the "Straight" news. Of course, O'Reilly drank the cool ade. This harridan will be "Reporting straight news" when my humchback aunt straightens up.

Do they think they are

Submitted by forest on Sat, 07/09/2011 - 4:57pm.

Do they think they are helping Obama and the rest of the spending-addict Democrats by highlighting the fact that the government is nearing insolvency thanks to their insane spending.

I know they are used to spiking stories and lying on Obama's behalf, but they should be sure it's actually going to help him before tossing what's left of their credibility into the toilet.

Sawyer, of course, is just

Submitted by celator on Sat, 07/09/2011 - 5:00pm.

Sawyer, of course, is just too dumb to understand what she is reading off a news teleprompter. But surely someone on her production crew should have the decency to stop her from making a public fool of herself. Again.

Don't be surprised...

Submitted by retrocon on Sat, 07/09/2011 - 5:55pm.

Don't be surprised when either the republicans cave on Sunday, or we do default. Here's why...

Congress authorizes the money, but generally it's administered by the executive branch.

So, Obama has plans:

1) tell the House leadership that he will continue to do all his social spending, and NOT pay the debt or interest on the debt, and blame it all on them for not raising the debt limit - republicans know he'll do it, threat works, we get nada.

2) republicans decide to ignore his warning, he allows us to default on the debt and interest, rather than cutting back on social spending, and he and the MSM put 100% of the blame on the house republicans.

Really, he can't lose as long as he has 80% of the press on his side, or at least, he and the republican leadership will believe that.

BTW:

Submitted by retrocon on Sat, 07/09/2011 - 5:58pm.

It takes two houses of congress to authorize spending, and if i'm not mistaken the budget is in place. If it says "spend on social program A, B, C, and pay the interest on the debt," well, he just says "we ran out of money before paying the interest," and he gets off scott free from the leftist propaganda machine.

just watch.

To my knowledge, the FY2011 budget was never passed

Submitted by Galvanic on Sat, 07/09/2011 - 7:24pm.

The Federal government continues to run on a continuing resolution (CR) based on the FY2010 budget.

Obama and the Dems may be dumb enough to play this out the way you describe, but I think it would backfire no matter how much the MSM blames the GOP. For one thing, fewer and fewer Americans trust the MSM for accurate news. For another, a brief 30 second ad explaining how Obama funded fringe programs instead of paying off interest on the national debt would destroy him and any Dem that runs to support him.

Agree..

Submitted by retrocon on Sun, 07/10/2011 - 9:49am.

i don't think they'd get away with it long term if the Repubs have a back bone. I'm more concerned that we still have a number of spineless RINOs who bow to the threat. And mid term, the pouncing by the MSM will be good for Obama... As for the 30 second ad, the MSM has been on record for some time for refusing political ad's it deems "lies."

ABC caught in a lie! Shocking.

Submitted by Comrade Jim on Sat, 07/09/2011 - 6:05pm.

What is going on here is that ABC will day by day drop innuendos, give interviews, volunteer comments all to the purpose of slowly and subtly (in their minds) brick by brick build a big pile of blame to drop on the Republicans.

Of course it isn't shocking or subtle at all. It is the standard, ordinary trick # 317 variation C3, routinely played by the Democrat media.

I'd consider that too

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 07/09/2011 - 10:07pm.

But what I would do in this case is I'd want to see the "default" clock run out without any effort on the part of the Republicans.  Let the "countdown" get to zero, see what happens.  Just put the dare back on them.

I can't believe people are buying that malarkey, but then these might be the same people that have buyer's remorse as well.  Too little, too late.

No doubt her new best buddie ...

Submitted by Fredy on Sat, 07/09/2011 - 7:48pm.

Bill O'Reilly will be running a similar clock with similar stories.

It is very tough to tell O'Reilly from the rest of the 'msm' these days. In fact, since that Obama interview, O'Reilly has been steadily skewing to the left. I guess his ego is such that as he has gained viewers, he feels less of a need to analyse stories and more of a need to impose his will.

I can hear him stating categorically that the irresponsible tea party people need to grow up and raise that debt ceiling or he will personally see that they can never be elected again!
