After Mocking Rick Perry for Calling Twitter 'Tweeter' Chris Matthews Does it Twice in One Show

By Noel Sheppard | July 06, 2011 | 18:57

John Lennon in the '70s sang about instant karma getting you.

On Wednesday's "Hardball," two weeks after mocking Texas governor Rick Perry for calling Twitter "Tweeter," the pathetically pompous Chris Matthews made the same mistake not once, but twice (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: And check out Rick Perry getting a new media award -- that's for knowing what you're talking about -- and then saying, quote, "You can always follow me on tweeter." I think it's Twitter, brother.

That's how Matthews teased the segment during his "Hardball" introduction on June 21.

Later in the program, before breaking for a commercial, Matthews continued to belittle Perry:

MATTHEWS: Up next: Texas Governor Rick Perry wins a new media award, then says, you can follow me on tweeter. This guy may be more like George W. than we thought. Catch it in the "Sideshow" coming up next.

After the commercial break:

MATTHEWS: Back to HARDBALL. Now to the "Sideshow."

First up: It's all Greek to me, or all Greek to Rick Perry. In a media made for the RightOnline Conference, the Texas governor urged fellow conservatives to follow him on Twitter -- or did he?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GOV. RICK PERRY (R), TEXAS: Until then, if you have had enough, take out our phone and text fed up to 95613. And you can always follow me on tweeter @GovernorPerry.

Thanks for this award. God bless you.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MATTHEWS: Well, tweeter? The kicker: Governor Perry was accepting an award recognizing his use of new media.

Well, with the ghost of John Lennon possibly at his side, Matthews Wednesday made the same mistake - twice:

MATTHEWS: But the big challenge obviously is to get those numbers jacked up again to 2012 where he can have at least the same participation. Will Tweeter, will Twitter help?

A few minutes later:

MATTHEWS: So what good’s Tweeter? Twitter? Tweeting?

You see, it's funny when a liberal makes a mistake. But when a conservative does it, it disqualifies him or her as being a serious candidate for high office.

By the way, to quote Matthews, the kicker: This was a segment about the President's town hall meeting taking questions from - wait for it! - Twitter.

Cue John Lennon:

Chris jumped the shark long

Submitted by motherbelt on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 7:21pm.

Chris jumped the shark of reason long ago with his "thrill up the leg" comment.

It's all been anticlimactic since then.

Yeah, once one has jumped the big shark as Matthews has, his nightly jumping of countless other sharks seems rather mundane and almost downright boring.... :)

Will Matthews rush to scold

Submitted by Van Halen on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 7:28pm.

Will Matthews rush to scold Obama for talking about 'the internets' today?
Didn't think so.
And Matthews' ratings reflect his one-sided Liberal slant. He should have been kicked off MSNBC by now for losing them so much money, but if you do your research, you'll see that the Obama administration snuck some backdoor taxpayer-funded loans over to GE a while back. So YOU, American Taxpayer, YOU are now partly responsible (unknowingly) for keeping Matthews on the air.

Tingles is becoming more of a jerk daily. He is so pathetic, I almost feel sorry for him. No, on second thought I could care less. One would think that someone with so much brain power, as he claims he has, he could get a better job instead of being the lowest rated cable "news" show

I don't think that makes you out of touch, just insightful (as in, "the emperor has no clothes"). As far as I can tell, there really is no useful purpose for Twitter. It's a step too far into - well - nothing. It's a technology that had to have a purpose invented for it. What that purpose is, exactly, I do not know or understand either. For me, it's the Pet Rock of communications technology. It's one of those things which, when I ask, "What is it for?" and someone tries to explain it to me, I repeat, "Yeah, but what is it for?". Know what I mean?

My #2 son, who is very up to

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 07/07/2011 - 2:02am.

My #2 son, who is very up to date with technology and all things young, hip, and current.........and also an officer in the Coast Guard (just back from a year in the Persian Gulf), as well as having an IQ higher than even Joe 'Plugs' Biden, as well as possessing a master's degree in busines.......tried to explain it to me, but I didn't really get it. Apparantly, neither does he, because he doesn't do it........like you say - 'what is it for'??? When you've got instantaeous email, and texting, and whatever the hell else........do you really need to 'tweet'??? Hell, just the sound of it keeps me from caring!!!

Hey grumps............thanks a lot. The Biden statement was a send-up based on his own statement about having a higher IQ than someone he was talking to. Hell, my son had a highter IQ than Biden when he was about 5!!! Even I have a highter IQ that ol' Plugs!!!!!

Call me old-fashioned

Submitted by 4eyes50 on Thu, 07/07/2011 - 8:41am.

but I actually long for the days of pay phones and corded telephones. Does that make me a dinosaur? Really, is it necessary to have a phone attached to your person at all times? How did we ever get by all those years ago by not knowing: if someone was going to the bathroom right now; if they just broke a nail; or of their disappointment that nothing was on TV? And I thought the 80's was the ME generation!

I sometimes get nostalgic for the days when I wasn't able to be contacted at any ol' time on any ol' day. Now, people get angry if they can't speak to me whenever they want. Heaven forbid that you somehow manage to miss their call on your cell phone. It wasn't that long ago when if someone wasn't in to answer their phone, you just called back later...

but wasn't that back when there were only 5 channels that came in clearly, they signed off at midnight and everyone was in bed?
You know, back when people had lives, VISITED neighbors and friends, and actually knew their neighbors! My parents gave me a time limit on the phone when I was a teen - and when we were younger, we couldn't answer it if they weren't home! I swear, the young people of today would wither up and die if they could not access their phone every 5 minutes, regardless of what they're doing.

Since you mentioned corded telephones, friends and family laugh at me because I still have two rotary dial telephones connected as extensions in the house. I do have two touchtone phones as well so I'm not completely stuck in the 50's!

Matthews is comic relief

Submitted by Texndoc on Thu, 07/07/2011 - 12:38am.

I read about the pathetic viewing numbers for Olbermann - 200,000 people or so. I think Tingles' numbers are similar. Imagine, that's about a quarter the population of Dallas watching his show while the rest of the entire country is doing something else. (just an example - Dallas is NOT watching his show.)

I'd miss him I guess if he wasn't there. And yeah, when Perry is the nominee he and Shultz are going to do the "Duhhhh.....Duhhhhhhhh" Texas accent. But who cares, it's just for Newsbusters and Levin and Laura Ingraham to laugh at.

He wanted sooooo much to be part of the Obama oligarchy he prostituted himself to the Great King and Dear Leader Obama. Yet sadly even "the tingle up the leg" and "forgot he was black for an hour"...oops! Maybe that one cancelled out the tingle part? Earth to Chris, when you try too hard, just makes you a dumbass. But hey that makes you somfin!
