NBC Nightly News Reports Bachmann's John Wayne Gaffe, Ignores Obama's Fallen Soldier Error

Like dutiful White House shills, the "NBC Nightly News" Monday reported Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann mistaking the Iowa town where actor John Wayne was born.

Hypocritically, NBC News has still not informed viewers of President Obama's horrible error last Thursday when he said he had awarded a Medal of Honor in person to a living soldier who actually had been killed in Afghanistan in 2006 (video follows with transcript and commentary):

KELLY O’DONNELL: Bachmann, who has recently begun stressing her background as a tax attorney and small business owner, has been embarrassed by a string of factual errors like placing the battles of Lexington and Concorde in the wrong state. She missed the mark again in our interview, bringing up an unrelated and incorrect claim about her hometown.

CONGRESSWOMAN MICHELE BACHMANN (R-MINNESOTA): Another famous American that was born in Waterloo, Iowa, was John Wayne.

O’DONNELL: Iowans say it's widely known here that actor John Wayne was born about 150 miles away in Winterset.

As NewsBusters reported earlier Monday, MSNBC's Chris Matthews also felt the need to address this calamity.

However, according to CNN, this isn't as big an issue as Matthews and O'Donnell think.

Jeanne Moos reported on the 6PM installment of "The Situation Room":

JEANNE MOOS: Meanwhile, Bachmann started taking shots for a supposed gaffe. Speaking about her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa.

BACHMANN: It's like John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That's the kind of spirit that I have, too.

MOOS: Blogs went for the kill, saying it wasn't John Wayne, the actor, who was from Waterloo, but John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer, who lived there. No sooner had the snarky headlines appeared -- "Bachmann Compares Self to Gay Rapist Clown Serial Killer" -- than Bachmann's campaign told "The Washington Times" that actor John Wayne's parents did live in Waterloo.

So it turned out to be a cheap shot.

A cheap shot the folks at MSNBC and NBC seem very comfortable in taking.

But the hypocrisy doesn't end there.

As NewsBusters reported last week, President Obama on Thursday said he had literally awarded a Medal of Honor to one Jared Monti, meaning in person while he was alive.

Unfortunately, Monti was bestowed this honor posthumously in 2009 having been killed in Afghanistan three years prior. Obama later apologized to the family for his misstatement.

Despite the seriousness of this gaffe, MSNBC and NBC have yet to report it. In fact, according to LexisNexis, through Sunday, not one television news network has.

It appears a Republican presidential candidate confusing the names of two small Iowa towns most people have never heard of is far more important than a sitting president mistaking a fallen hero for a live one.

But O'Donnell wasn't done with the Bachmann bashing:

O'DONNELL: Bachmann told me she expects greater scrutiny and needs to be more careful.

BACHMANN: I will make mistakes. It will happen. But I will tell you to the very best of my ability, I'll try and get everything right that is coming out of my mouth.

O’DONNELL: And details matter, and when Bachmann left the stage here, her campaign played the Tom Petty hit song, “American Girl." Turns out petty isn't pleased. His manager says they will ask the Bachmann campaign not to use that song. They also asked George W. Bush not to use any of his music. But Hillary Clinton did use "American Girl" throughout her campaign in 2008. Brian.

BRIAN WILLIAMS, HOST: As they say, when people get in the race, welcome to the NFL. Kelly O’Donnell in Waterloo, Iowa, tonight. Kelly, thanks.

Actually, Brian, it's only the NFL for Republicans entering races. As Americans saw during the 2008 campaign as well as the past two and a half years, it's more like Pee Wee football for Obama, as he can fumble at will and still get a pat on the head from his adoring press.

Will he ever be treated like a big leaguer, or is that an "honor" only bestowed on Republicans?

The list of stupidity (those gotcha moments)

Submitted by hbnolikeee on Mon, 06/27/2011 - 10:51pm.

that our fearless leader has uttered during his all too long tour is way too impressive for these fools to ridicule others about. I can't begin to capture all the clear signs of inferior thinking and lack of education our intellectual (what a laugh) has exhibited to date.

* How about he wanted to hold some peoples' "FEETS" to the fire?
or of course there is
* 57 States
and then there is the repeated mispronunciation
* "CORPSE MAN".

We could move on to Plugs, but that's a book in itself.

Which Obama Gaffe, jkw?

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 06/28/2011 - 9:32am.

Because, as we here all know, they are legion (apparently the MsM is unaware of this fact).

However, I am tending toward Obama's latest gaffe....which may actually just be ILLEGAL!!!

So....Obama's going to raffle off a meal prepared by the White House Chef (who pays for this chef, Mr. Obama?  Oh right...that wouldn't be you!) to fill his campaign coffers.   And of course, he prepares this little video in the White House (who pays for the White House, Mr. Obama?  Oh right....that wouldn't be you!).

Now, we've yet to hear Obama's brilliant staff weigh in on this subject.  But when we do, I'm sure we'll hear a mea culpa.  "Oops, nobody knew that was in contravention to Federal Election Committee Laws, so solly, we won't do it again".

Which brings me to my next question.  Was it merely sloppy staff work, or was it Obama shooting his middle finger in our faces, yet again?  Inquiring minds want to know.

with the middle finger. He doesn't have to obey the laws, or enforce the laws he doesn't like.  So, it's just the street organizer telling the public to screw off, he's above the law.

Bachmann needs a better team

Bachmann is great, her speech writer just blows. Imagine if Obama would have had a speech writer that blew in 2008. She needs more money, give it to her!!

Another example of the hypocrisy

Submitted by uhohshortsonthe... on Tue, 06/28/2011 - 5:11am.

Not to mention the underlying racism of the media. By not ever, ever, criticizing Obama for even the dumbest gaffes, he is afforded affirmative action style treatment, as if he were too stupid to know any better. One would think the media would hold him up to the same standard as any other public servant, meaning they would think he is capable of it. This is the same thought process liberals have when they scream about hiring quotas, the unfairness of standardized test scores, etc. What they are REALLY saying is, "minorities have inferior intelligence, so to feel better about myself let's lower standards so everyone has a chance."

John Wayne or John Wayne Gacy when has that ever mattered to a liberal?

The real question is which one do you think they would glorify if given a choice?

NBC

Submitted by jessieH on Tue, 06/28/2011 - 9:17am.

Mr Sheppard, you call NBC news "shills". To be politcally correct, they are Treasonous Bastards. They work with the government against the people. Just like in Germany, when the media helped Hitler kill millions of people, they are trying the same thing here.

Michelle Bachmann did not mention John Wayne Gacy. It was

Submitted by Rush Fan on Tue, 06/28/2011 - 9:32am.

the media that attempted to create another Bachmann gaffe, by implying that when she brought up John Wayne, she confused Wayne with John Wayne Gacy. She did no such thing!

Even the Washington Times, in an article titled The wrong John Wayne did an "Update" [correction?] explaining that:

The Bachmann campaign sent this explanation: "John Wayne is from Iowa, his parents lived in Waterloo."

And indeed his parents did in fact live briefly in Waterloo — in fact, according to "Duke: The Life and Image of John Wayne," it's where they met. But soon after their marriage they moved to Winterset, where Wayne was born.

-------------------------

Reason.com also did a "Update" [correction?] to its piece Michele Bachmann and John Wayne Gacy, a Tale of Two Iowans

UPDATE: Alexander Burns of POLITICO quotes an autobiography of Wayne (the actor) which says that Clyde, Wayne's father, lived briefly in Waterloo with John Wayne's mother; hated being so far away from family; and therefore moved to Winterset, where Wayne was born.

-------------------------------

So just as unprofessional journalist Chris Wallace created an erroneous and demeaning "flack" image for Michelle Bachmann based on unsubstantiated "rap", the media created a John Wayne Gacy gaffe out of thin air.

By the way, have you heard the audio of two of my favorite Talk Radio hosts, Bill Bennett and Mark Levin, weighing in on Chris Wallace's stupid questions to Bachmann?  Here is the AUDIO of Bill Bennett saying “It’s time for Chris Wallace to go" and much more.

Here is the AUDIO of Mark Levin tearing into Wallace and the rest of the media for the way that they treat conservative women like Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin. Towards the end of the audio Michelle Bachmann calls in to the show, and discusses the Wallace affair.

Submitted by ForeverOnTheRight on Tue, 06/28/2011 - 9:32am.

The thought has crossed my mind, "Gaffes like this are not important. What is important is the person's position on domestic, foreign policies, and their character. We make to big a deal over gaffes that are not important like this." If a gaffe revealed a flaw in character, or bad policies, then make a big deal over the revealing gaffe. The Bachman gaffe only reveals that she did not know that John Wayne was not born in Waterloo. This is just trivial ignorance. I did not know where John Wayne was born.

Right is never wrong, Left is never right.

Bachmann and Media bias

At the gym this morning, the had Fox and CNN side by side. The title of the Fox segment was "Michelle Bachmann on media bias toward conservative women". On CNN, we had "Bachmann: story lines and gaffes". I must have missed the "Obama; story lines and gaffes" segment over the past 3 years.
