Was Obama Impersonator Pulled From GOP Event for Racial Jokes or for Bashing Republicans?

By Noel Sheppard | June 19, 2011 | 10:08

Noel Sheppard's picture

America's liberal media are having a field day claiming that an Obama impersonator at a Republican event was pulled off the stage Saturday for telling racial and gay jokes.

Here's how the Washington Post reported it (video of entire presentation also follows with commentary):

A President Obama impersonator was pulled off the stage Saturday at the Republican Leadership Conference, after telling a string of racially themed jokes about the president.

The impersonator, Reggie Brown, took the stage at the annual presidential cattle call to the Bruce Springsteen song “Born in the USA” — an apparent allusion to the birther controversy. He proceeded to tell a series of off-color jokes poking fun at Obama’s biracial heritage and a gay member of Congress.

Politico framed it the same way:

A comedian impersonating President Obama made racially tinged jokes Saturday at the Republican Leadership Conference before being pulled off the stage by an event organizer.

I've watched the entire eighteen minutes, and in my view, the jokes Brown made were pretty tame especially if compared to what late night comedians say about Republicans on almost a daily basis.

Brown's jokes weren't nearly as caustic as some of the stuff Wanda Sykes said at last year's White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Here are some of the lines the Post found potentially offensive:

• On Black History Month: “Michelle celebrates the full month. I celebrate half.”

• “My mother loved a black man,” but “she was not a Kardashian.”

• A picture was shown of Obama and the first lady when he took office. The impersonator then showed a picture of what the Obamas will look like when the president leaves office, and it was the characters of Fred Sanford and his sister-in-law, Ethel, Aunt Esther, from the show “Sanford and Son.”

Are those that bad? The Post also took issue with this:

• Of Tim Pawlenty’s decision not to criticize Mitt Romney at Monday’s debate: “[CNN’s] John King served him up a ball softer than Barney Frank’s backside.” (Frank is a gay member of Congress from Massachusetts.)

Now, that might have crossed the line a bit. However, the reaction by the crowd might also have been due to the attack on Pawlenty.

Remember - this was a Republican event.

From my vantage point having watched the entire segment, I think it was the GOP bashing that finally got Brown pulled off stage. Somewhat surprisingly, the Associated Press seemed to agree:

The audience grew more uncomfortable when Brown turned to the candidates who are looking to make Obama a one-term president.

The impersonator took a shot at former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, saying Pawlenty missed the conference because "he's having his foot surgically removed from his mouth."

"Don't worry: it's covered under Obamneycare ... along with spinal transplants," Brown said. [...]

The impersonator joked about Romney's Mormon faith and about polygamy, and Rep. Michele Bachmann's tea party support.

Organizers then cut off Brown's microphone and turned on music. He was shown off the stage.

That's the way I saw it. The crowd seemed to be getting antsy as Brown started going after the various GOP presidential candidates. This was after all a Republican event.

The Post reported:

Eventually, RLC President and CEO Charlie Davis made the decision to pull him offstage, and a man came onstage to physcially escort Brown off.

“I pulled him off the stage,” Davis acknowledged afterward. “I just thought he had gone too far. He was funny the first 10 or 15 minutes, but it was inappropriate, it was getting ridiculous.”

Indeed. For the first ten or fifteen minutes, Brown was funny - until he started attacking Republicans.

Yet prominent media outlets reported his sacking as being caused by his racial and gay jokes. This of course is not at all surprising.

As NewsBusters has been reporting for months, the goal of the Obama-loving media is to paint all Republicans as racists and homophobes in order to gin up support for the president they helped get elected in the first place.

Was that what they were doing with their coverage of this event?

Here's Brown's entire presentation. You decide why he finally got pulled from that stage:

A black man telling jokes about race? I'm shocked!!

Good thing Jackie Mason never told Jewish jokes.

This comedy routine was WEAK!!  It didn't even approach the comedic standards set by Maxine Waters, Hank, Johnson, Sheila Jackson-Lee, Al Sharpton in advancing the Democrat held stereotype of black people.

It's been a while since we've heard from Bobby Rush.

You guys absoluytely need to watch Fox News Sunday!

In response to Jon Stewart's "I'm Herman Cain and I don't like to read"  Chris Wallace asked Stewart if he's planning a remake of Amos & Andy.

Of course we're treated to the standard "I'm a comedian" game of hide & seek.

That was great back and forth betwen the two and imagine if Beck did the "black voice" if he were talking any black politician or maybe Miller doing it?

Remember Beck does stand up, would he be able to use the "I am a comic" bullshit?

That is what wallace should have said.

-- I hope "Reggie Brown" isn't his real name-- because I'm certain that you-know-who isn't amused, and can make his life miserable by siccing the IRS, SS, and TSA on him....

--he missed a golden opportunity to give the act more authenticity-- he should have had 2 guys dressed like SS complete with "ear wires" each bring out a right and left teleprompter screen!

--he went out of his way to be an "equal opportunity basher" with the mix of jokes on "himself" as Obama, Dems, and GOP figures-- but including W's mother Barbara was a bit over the top-- he should have had someone impersonating her to come out and swing at him with an umbrella....

--since ANYTHING that opponents say against Obama is considered by Dems and their "fellow travelers" to be racist, it's already a no-win situation-- serious, in jest, or otherwise....

Insulting

Submitted by iveseenitall on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 11:09am.

In my opnion, with a few exceptions the entire media insults the American people every day. It's akin to the teachers who won't challenge their students, but rather dumb down the curriculum to simply get through a lesson. Same for these "confabs". Bring on a comedian of any stripe to lessen the severity of the problems this country is facing. We're going down the drain and all we can do is laugh about it? I guess we're just too stupid and can't understand the real problems without a talking head or a comedian making it "understandable" or amusing for us. The recent golf game among our "leaders" is a prime example of how close we are to total collapse as a nation. Read the history books, Americans. Oh, that's right, you can't read, can you? How sad.

Personally, I thought this guy was funny!

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 11:21am.

As a huge fan of Bob Hope, Jeff Foxworthy and all of the Blue Collar Comedy shows, Amos n' Andy, The Little Rascals, Andy Griffith Show, etc, this guy was funny.

He spread it around pretty good.  If the RLC can't learn to laugh at themselves they will never succeed.  Nothing this guy said was racially hurtful, so the only thing that could have upset them were the shots he took at Republicans.

This was funny stuff precisely because nothing was sacred.  Like Bob Hope he let both sides have it a little.

Lighten up Republican Party.  You act like liberals sometimes.

I say let's elect a redneck for president.  We at least seem to have a sense of humor.  After all, we were home schooled, at least until the teacher was arrested for sexually harassing her students.

"If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen." I like Reggie Brown. He poked fun at both parties, like a good comedian does. He wasn't there to pick a party, he was there to impersonate obummer. Conservatives are better than this. That's something a liberal would do. Who knows, maybe obummer said that about the Republicans. I can see pulling the plug on obummer. but why on Reggie?

had that show on Comedy Central called "That's My Bush!" back in the early 2000s. Then HBO did the subversive 9/11 movie with Timothy Bottoms, the actor that played GWB from "Thats My Bush", playing GWB in the movie. Then you had Oliver Stone's version of W., which had every single anti-Bush Administration actor in this country vying to slander the President. Then you had the movie "Death of A President", which portrayed the assassination of W. Wow, when you think about it, the political party that preaches about civility and banning hyperbolic vitriol from public speech is really the ones that use it the most for political gain.

Very Puzzling

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 11:58am.

I watched the whole video.  My take:

  • He was funny, on a few occasions.  But most of the time his routine was just plain dumb.
  • He relies too much on "low brow" humor.  Fat jokes and sight gags.  What was funny about linking Romney to promiscuity?
  • There is no way this guy's entire routine was vetted.  Whoever was in charge of reviewing and hiring him, from the lowest level person up to the person in charge of putting this whole meeting together needs to be fired.
  • Given the right material, he could be hilarious.  His material is geared to a broad audience and my guess is this guy does stand-up at low level comedy  clubs where he tries to make drunks laugh, so he needs a broad routine.  Not a good idea for a conservative fund raiser dinner.

Whoever vetted this guy for this even is an idiot.  You don't spend a minute or two with a comic and then hire him for an event that could cause a media blow up, which this will, given the proclivity for the MSM to pounce upon anything they deem racially offensive.  The MSM is going to move this to the front page and run with it for as long as they can.  His entire routine should have been reviewed, and if it had, I can see no way that he would be allowed to do that routine before a Republican/Conservative audience.

There is so much material that could be used against Obama that would make for intelligent humor.  The Economy, his flip flopping, his childhood, the lack of any information about his background, his hypocrisy, etc, etc.

This guy was making fun of the TEA PARTY! How the hell did he get hired for this event?  The 2012 election is too important for this kind of side-show.  The MSM doesn't need this sort of ammunition served up to them on a silver platter.  Republicans need to get smarter when it comes to this sort of stuff.

It wasn't a promiscuity dig...

Submitted by apf2 on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 4:25pm.

The Romney dig was a dig against Mormons all being polygamists. Once again it's always OK to insult/ridicule the Christian and Mormon (and to a lesser degree, Jewish) religions and always taboo to insult/ridicule/joke about the Muslim religion.

The guy bombed. If it were the Gong Show we would have seen a big hook come in from off stage. He couldn't even deliver the funny lines. It was only partly the fault of the material.

So I guess the idiots on M.S.S.R. (MSNBC) will devote 18 months of non-stop coverage on this to show how RACIST the GOP is. Nevermind how they gush at how "brilliant" the lame SNL impersonators are of Obama (Genius) and Palin (Dunce), especially on Morning Shmoe. I swear, Bubbles Bryzinski cannot contain herself everytime Tina Fey is on. I'm sorry, bet spending segments on their tv shows talking about what Steven Colbert and Jon Stewart took or didn't twist out of context is counterproductive because they both hide behind the label of "SATIRISTS" when called out for their antics. Morning Shmoe does this at 6:20am EST through the "Politico (ALL-Progressive, Anti-Conservative) Playbook" with the 3 Politico dweebs. Personally, If I were the GOP, stop with all comedy. The situation in this country are dire and The President, VP, House Majority Leader, and Gov. of Ohio basically told the American people, "Let us play Golf." In Turn, We will tell the "so-called" government leaders (all of them) in 2012, "Watch you ALL get Booted out on your ASSES!"

I just watched this routine,

Submitted by killa37 on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 1:55pm.

I just watched this routine, and actually I thought it was OK. The guy did a pretty good job of impersonating Boy O'Barry - with the voice and the facial and hand movements - although Ithink he could have stammered and stuttered and ooooooh'd and uhhhhhhh'd a little more. Some of the jokes were pretty good - well, at least I laughed.

Let's remember that the guy was SUPPOSED to be Boy O'Blunder, so I took that as part of the schtick........he was there to represent his side, in a humorous way. Plus - and I'm stating the obvious here - he's a 'black' guy!!! I think Obama NEEDS more and more disdain and disparagment and disrespect, to be brutally honest here - because that is what he has been shoving down our throats from Day 1!!! I'm not talking about the 'Office of the Presidency'.....I'm talking about OBAMA the 'man' and the 'politician'. So I don't really care if it's a 'black' guy or a 'white' guy or whatever.

And the end of the gig looked like a set-up to me, actually. I think that the press is running with this thing and trying to use it to their advantage - which is to make Republicans look bad and make the lib/Dems/Obama REGIME look good.

And if any 'Republicans' ARE offended by this....................get over it, because it's minor!!!! We can hear MUCH WORSE from the libs/Dems/MSM/Obama on any given day!!!!

I thought it was pretty funny

Submitted by Blonde on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 2:34pm.

This guy's imitation is getting better all the time, the voice inflection is great, and his stops and starts, and particularly the laughing at his own jokes, is spot-on.

As for the jokes, I thought they were pretty good, actually. As for "skewering" the current crop of candidates, he was only parroting what the MsM is saying about them. Pawlenty is spineless, Mitt is a Mormon (the Horror!...remember Time's cover), Bachmann is a one syllable person (she's dumb, a la Palin). To me, he was really mocking Obama's sychophantic media.

Some of the racial jokes were a bit risque, but so what? He showed a picture of Sanford & Son? Big deal. As for the Boehner joke, did anyone see the golf game yesterday? Tonally, same color.

If anything, he should have been a little meaner with his jokes, but maybe this wasn't quite the venue for it. Some of the black comics are really raunchy and rude, but of course, THAT's different! Yep. The old double standard.

So I'm not bothered at all by this, and if the democrats screech....let them.

And the other shows of that era would occasionally have rock and roll groups on - although you could always find your favorite rockers and doo-woppers on American Bandstand and the other 'teen' shows.

Hell, I would sit through Ozzie and Harriet just to watch Rickety sing with his band at the end of the show - and check out the legendary James Burton on guitar. I even saw the GREAT Jackie Wilson here in Hawaii when I was about 12, and also Bo Diddley..............and when I was in 'America' going to college, I caught James Brown and his whole review - the best live act I've ever seen in my life!!!

My name..............................Jose Jimenez!!!!!

You're killing me, Killa!

You're killing me, Killa!   Awesome times.

In my defense, we were talking about comedy.  For music, I can't disagree with anyone you wrote about.  I didn't "discover" Nelson till "Garden Party" and Burton till the 80's.  My fav Telecaster player is Clarence White - father of country rock and co-creator of the Tele B-Bender with Gene Parsons.   White's work on the Sweetheart of the Rodeo outtakes of One Hundred Years with Gram Parsons singing (not the album version with Roger McGuinn singing) floors me.  And then there is the rest of his work.  Ha!  Stunning stuff.

While there may be blockbuster acts nowadays, the 50's 60's and 70's were ground breaking musical acts that are sorely missed.

Who didn't like Topo Gigio?

Staged Ending

Submitted by HardRightTurn on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 3:32pm.

Cutting out the mic and ushering 'Obama' off was part of the bit - it was staged. Otherwise, why would the mic have been turned back on so quickly so that Reggie could smilingly say his goodbye thank you's? This just might be a setup.

As for the so-called racial jokes, the real Obama himself has spoken of himself with similar self-deprecating humor. The boos and catcalls for the Republican jokes is normal for any group. Just think what it would be like at a union confab in Wisconsin. Somebody would have got hurt.

It was decent, some funny

Submitted by balboa on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 3:36pm.

It was decent, some funny stuff. Surprised that that they thought it inappropriate to poke fun at the Reublican candidates. Why can't that occur?

And second, how do you hire a comedian for a political event and not now exactly what material he's going to do if you are in fact that sensitive?

Come again?

How do you come here and tell us all how much you love the cop killers and not now (sic) where the evidence is for the innocence of the two cop killers you love so much?

I thought it was very good, and funny..

I liked all of it, there was some good comedy writing in there, and it was well (and authentically) delivered. The only gag I didn't like was on Barbara Bush. It's clear they gave him the hook, but courteously, Shame, because I would have liked to hear the rest of his act. I mean, he's President Obama - if you don't like one of his digs at Republicans, here's your chance to boo "Obama" vigorously - it's theater, man, including audience participation. Politico and WaPo deliberately or at least erroneously misreporting his being pulled for offensive race or anti-gay jokes, is no surprise - what IS a surprise is the AP actually getting it basically right. And Noel nails the hypocrisy of the liars, and their double standard vis a vis Wanda Sykes (or Stephen Colbert) when it comes to the "offensiveness" of the act. Reggie Brown didn't say anything offensive racially, only the Barney Frank joke pushed the boundaries a little - and even that I interpreted as being more about his being fat than gay.
