Juan Williams Spars With Chris Wallace Over Public Support For Afghanistan War
Fox News haters love to advance the myth that the network pushes exclusively conservative views and the anchors surround themselves with right-leaning yes men who never question them.
On the latest installment of "Fox News Sunday," liberal political analyst Juan Williams challenged host Chris Wallace's view of the public's support for the war in Afghanistan leading to a humorous exchange (video follows with transcript and commentary):
CHRIS WALLACE, HOST: Bill, there's another interesting fact in this whole equation, and that is that General David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, is about to apparently give the president his recommendation. Does the president dare go against Petraeus -- and you know that recommendation will become public -- given the fact that Petraeus is widely credited with not -- if not winning the war, certainly beginning to turn it around? And also, the president has named him to be his CIA director.
BILL KRISTOL, THE WEEKLY STANDARD: I suppose General Petraeus might give him two or three options and say --
WALLACE: But we always know the middle one is the one --
(CROSSTALK)
KRISTOL: Higher ones would assume more risk. I think any drawdown assumes some risk, incidentally. But I take the point that he will want to keep his word and do a little bit of a drawdown. The fact is the surge has succeeded in the south, it's succeeding -- it needs one more fighting season there. But we were still set on the ground. It has to go east now and clean up the Haqqani network there. Then I think there's a real chance in 2013 -- just as the president has been saying, 2014 is the real agreed-upon deadline for when we really turn over responsibility to the Afghans. I think he's on course to making that.
And it would be terrible, as I say, to take much greater risk just for the sake of appeasing a few politicians here and a few people in Congress who like popping off. He can stand course for the 2013 -- much bigger drawdown of 2013, and with a real turnover in 2014, I think.
JUAN WILLIAMS, FOX POLITICAL ANALYST: All the wise men of Washington want him to stay. John Kerry wants him to stay, you want him to stay. But let me just say --
WALLACE: No. Supposedly, John Kerry is saying that he'd like to see -- pardon?
BRIT HUME: He's going the other way.
WALLACE: Kerry is now talking about, you know, we've accomplished a lot, maybe we need to drawn down faster.
WILLIAMS: But not at the rate that I think the American people -- the American people want it over. When you're spending --
(CROSSTALK)
WALLACE: How do you know what the American people want, Juan?
WILLIAMS: Well, you look at the numbers. Look at the support for this war. It's not there.
WALLACE: Actually, that's not true. The support for the war has actually increased.
MARA LIASSON, NPR: No, no, no.
WILLIAMS: It's increased from what? It's very minimal. This is minimal support. You're fooling yourself.
WALLACE: Really? All right. So we'll take your idea about what the American people want.
WILLIAMS: I just think you should look at the numbers.
WALLACE: The polls?
WILLIAMS: Yes.
WALLACE: OK. That's how we're going to run the war? Good. Thank you.
WILLIAMS: Oh, please.
WALLACE: Thanks, panel. See you next week.
WILLIAMS: You always get the last word.
WALLACE: Up next, we hear from you. I'm the moderator.
(LAUGHTER)
As you can see, Fox is just a right-wing echo chamber espousing exclusively conservative views - just like the Left and their media minions tell you.

and I wouldn't say Chris Wallace is particularly conservative. In fact, he's one of the good journalists/interviewers who you don't really know exactly where they stand politically. He's tough on members of both parties.

to know is just how long are we expected to be over there. A corrupt govt that does not want us other for what they can steal. One thing that is certain, one year after the last U.S. soldier leaves. It will be as if we never went. It is not worth the blood or money we have paid for it. Fuck 'em. And in the future if we can identify a terrorist threat there....carpet bomb the dump again and again.

I completely agree with your thoughts, and while saying "Screw them" really isn't as gut level satisfying or directly to the point as "F" 'em, you will likely get heat for spelling out the word.
I'm not the thought police, my record for bad words on threads probably isn't topped by any current posters, but I like what you have to say and just thought I'd give you a heads up.
No offense intended.

Any one that resorts to such crude language simply demonstrates their lack of command of the language. It shows ignorance and little, if any, respect for those that they expose to it. In other words, one who has an extensive grammar school education has no need to expose their ignorance. It counters any "intelligent" meaning they may have tried to convey.

A C&C who dithered for months before sending something like 60% of the requested troops is hardly a "surge" let alone the fact that most were not / are not combat troops. Once again we are sending our children to fight for a corrupt foreign government with one hand tied behind their backs.
Now is the time for the REAL surge, most expect this to be the biggest enemy spring offensive of the war. If we would only meet and crush it with overwhelming force we could very quickly leave. Instead we rely more and more on the Afghan army that can easily be bought and are reluctant to fight their relatives.
I could go on, but the other things pis--ing me off about the situation might have negative repercussions for the troops, one of whom is my son.

Btw, your C&C is incorrect.
The term is 'Commander In Chief', not 'Commander & Chief'.
Getting it right is important not so much to honor the currrent holder of the title, but to honor good men such as your son and nephews who serve honorably under such a dishonorable CINC.
Sorry if that logic is tortured, but there it is.

And if they DO want to have something to do with US...................then they can damn well do it on OUR terms. Name me ONE THING that the Moooooooooooooooooooooslems have EVER done to make this world a better place!!!

Why are you apologizing? You aren't the one who said it.
The most we have is a disagreement about the appropriateness.
It's easy to rationalize.
As an example: My new year's resolution was (and is) to stop saying "sucks."
I hated that word for a long time, wouldn't use it. Then because everyone else was saying it I used it once, twice, and then it got to be a habit,. Then one I heard someone say s"***s (an anatomical part) and realized how disgusting it sounded.
So I decided not to use it any more. I have done really well; my slips I can count on one hand. And it's surprising how well one can converse without using that word.
"Stinks" works just as well, or I use the Italian version "puzza" which I think sounds a bit stronger.
And I can appreciate the sentiment of "F 'em if they can't take a joke" but IMO it's not something that should be thrown around willy-nilly either.

As far as the cursing goes here on NB I do wish it were not done. At least do not type out the entire word or use something else. We are not the Daily Kos or Huffington Post you know. ;-)

Noel says "Fox News haters love to advance the myth that the network pushes exclusively conservative views and the anchors surround themselves with right-leaning yes men who never question them."
Not true. What is objectionable is the number of righty Fox New Contributors who have numerous, one-person segments - Morris, Rove, Palin, your own Brent Bozo, others, etc. When you see a lib on Fox, it is almost always balanced by out by conservative. You almost never see a Beckel or Juan Williams alone. And then, you have liberal jokes like Colmes.
Wrong
Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 1:24pm.
Noel is 100% correct. From the LSM, to the cable spoon-feeders (CNN, MSLSD, ect.), and right up to the administration itself, the standard tactic is to make a lame attempt to discredit FOX by calling it a right-wing news source, an "arm of the republican party", or "Faux News". So the statement is accurate.
Also, Juan Williams often subs for O'Reilly for Christ's sake! And what about good ole Sheppard Smith? You can't get much farther from being conservative without listing to the left. And Greta is a self-confessed democrat. There's two libs with their own shows, and one very lib subbing for one of the supposedly "most right wing" hosts on FOX.
Finally, your petty name-calling of Brent BOZELL pretty much speaks for YOUR leanings, doesn't it? The only thing you got right was your comment about Alan Colmes...
Oh look. bsny smears Mr. Bozell again.

•C'mon Brent You know you're only upset because you'd prefer to have a threesome with Jerry Falwell.
•My statement on Brent Bozell Just like Keith Olbermann, this man is a horse's ass.
•It's really no different than a Hannity and Bozell segment that features two openly moronic commentators...
•the "Fair & Balanced" network brings on Mr. Bozo twice...
•...el Bozo's appearance...
•...Bozell, on the other hand, turns out he does like a little sausage every now and then.
•Brent: When do you plan to have that stick removed from your ass?

What astounds me is the number of people who claim to be FoxNews "haters" yet admit they have never actually watched the programs they so adamantly despise. They simply let the unbiased folks over at MSNBC make up their minds for them....

Is there really a need to provide proof that FOX is the most fair news source? Anyone who would argue won't be swayed by stupid little things like facts and examples. I still have a co-worker claiming FOX is right-wing because years ago O'Reilly picked on some rapper with a story that was supposedly not true, and he failed to correct the record. It's always been my experience that any FOX personality owns up to any mistakes made, or directly challenges anyone who says their facts are wrong with facts and figures.
