Sigourney Weaver: Global Warming is Sexist - Improving Women's Lives Will Solve The Problem

By Noel Sheppard | June 02, 2011 | 22:19

Noel Sheppard's picture

If you're like me, you've been waiting for feminist claims that global warming is harder on women and therefore should be a greater concern to the public.

Actress Sigourney Weaver of "Alien" fame did just that Thursday with an astonishingly ludicrous article published at the Huffington Post - a website rife with astonishingly ludicrous articles:

You might think that a force as sweeping as global warming would be an equal opportunity threat: that it would endanger men and women alike. But the fact is climate change exacts a heavier toll on women.

Yep. She wrote that. It's so absurd it's worth repeating: "climate change exacts a heavier toll on women."

How you might ask?

Women produce up to 80 percent of the food in the developing world. Drought and unpredictable rains brought on by climate change will make this work far more precarious. Women will have to labor harder and longer to ensure their families have food, fuel, and water.

Our role as caretakers puts us at even greater risk in times of extreme weather. Studies have found that women are 14 times more likely to die as a result of storms and other extreme weather than men.

Fourteen times! Why? Because women often look after the children, the elderly, and the sick, and that means we have less mobility in a flood or wildfire.

Shh. Wait. It gets better:

If you ask people the tools we need to stop climate change, most talk about wind and solar energy, fuel efficient cars, and biofuels. But there is another solution that is not so widely known: empowering women.

Yep. We can solve rising temperatures by - wait for it! - empowering women:

Two groundbreaking studies, one from the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research and one from the Futures Group, found that simply by meeting women's existing needs for voluntary family planning, we could reduce carbon emissions by between 8 and 15 percent.

That is the equivalent of stopping all deforestation today...Improving women's lives while curbing emissions offers another arrow in our quiver.

Yep. Improving women's lives will lower temperatures on the planet.

I wonder if Tipper Gore agrees with this premise?

Wasted your life? Just say you're an 'environmentalist'

Submitted by Slyrr on Thu, 06/02/2011 - 10:24pm.

I think it's high time that we air-lifted all of New York over to California, then saw California off and let the libs form their own country, 'Lib-opia' or something.

Since they hate flyover country anyway, why not just let them run their own country and let the people who love America rebuild it? They can make their own pro-gay, carbon-neutral, abortion-on-demand society where everyone uses only 2 squares of toilet paper per sitting, eat tree bark and dirt, and live in mud huts. They can crown Obama their king and spend their days making bad lawyer shows.

I guarantee they'll be begging to hitch a ride with the mexicans into America within a few months.

Ah, Weaver. Yet another celebrity who realizes she's sqandered her whole life pretending to be other people, and parroting lines written for her by movie writers who are far more intelligent than she is. Realizing that you've wasted your life? Just say you're an 'environmentalist'.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

You're right, Chris

Submitted by Galvanic on Fri, 06/03/2011 - 9:35am.

It reads like an article ought of The Onion.

I can't imagine most anyone uttering this nonsense with a straight face, but I can accept that Weaver really believes it because so many denizens of Hollywood think this way.

By the way, I don't think that anyone would really argue that "family planning" in developing countries  -- in other words, contraception and abortion in the Third World -- will reduce the global carbon footprint, if for no other reason than it results in fewer human beings  releasing CO2 into the atmosphere through the simple act of breathing.  But will that affect climate change?  The AGW zealots says so.

Weaver's 'progressivism' shines through, true to the dogma of Sanger and company.

"Women produce up to 80

Submitted by ant on Thu, 06/02/2011 - 11:22pm.

"Women produce up to 80 percent of the food in developing nations". So that means that women are responsible for deforestation for crop fields, evil farming corps. , pesticides and the like. Actually I thought seed and soil produced food, but, hey, if women are producing it, that's cool, they might as well produce something since Weaver, et al, don't want them producing offspring.

Right...

Submitted by proudamerican1990 on Thu, 06/02/2011 - 11:44pm.

First--- Now women are caregivers, when saying they are can help prove a point...

ANT--- good point, deforestation is definitely a factor in climate change... no trees to use the CO2

I'm all for empowering women, but then all the families they are providing are then going to go without food...

Unless the men go out and do the farming and stuff... Then, we are back in the same boat

...found that simply by meeting women's existing needs for voluntary family planning...

Hey, you said women's also take care of others.

...women often look after the children, the elderly, and the sick...

Yeah, that too. So family planning won't help with that.

Time to Implement Code S.G.*

Let's turn the elderly and sick into yummy green crackers. That way women won't have to farm so much and have so many to take care of. Kill 2 birds with one stone. Dang, I is smart.

Thank me. Thank me now.

Nothing

Today she proved she has nothing upstairs either.

Why do these actors insist on wrecking any enjoyment we've derived from their acting skills? I've liked Ms. Weaver in many of the parts she has played on screen - but now, anytime I watch her again, all I'll be able to think about is what a colossal moron she is in real life. The HuffPo should have posted a commentary from the Alien - it would've probably been more intelligent.

Just another boring, ignorant Hollywood lefty who is not a fan

Submitted by Rush Fan on Fri, 06/03/2011 - 12:23am.

of Sarah Palin. In an interview with TV GUIDE in 2008 Weaver said this about Sarah Palin:

I actually have a therapist. She's very smart and we try not to talk about politics because we're both incensed about Sarah Palin…

At a Women of Hollywood Tribute in 2008, Weaver said (VIDEO) this:

"I don't feel she [Palin] represents me in any way. She's in a skirt. That's about it."
Sigourney Weaver may be concerned that climate change exacts more of a toll on women, but what do you want to bet that Weaver is only concerned about the toll climate change has on liberal women. Women on the political right, such as Sarah Palin, can burn (i.e Global Warming) in HELL!

Damn, I'm going to have to get a new chair to replace the one I just broke from falling over backwards while flip-top head laughing!

So she claims that women are responsible for 80% of the developing world food production. I'd like to see her evidence because most of the farmers, cattlemen, butchers, other food production persons I've ever seen definitely exceed 20% of the total.

The not so subtle context of this dual purpose feminist/climate change drivel? Women continue to be oppressed and weak and haven't reached an acceptable level of empowerment. Pahleeez! Sigourney, meet Mrs. Schlafly. Cleanup on aisle 3! Ms. Weaver just exploded!

She appears to be a little slow on the uptake as well. Hasn't global warming been retrofitted to climate change?

God I hope I never develop an obsession to remain relevant.
