Matthews, Klein and Sullivan Think Justice Department Should Leave John Edwards Alone
The Justice Department is expected to indict former Senator John Edwards as early as Wednesday for violating federal campaign finance laws.
On this weekend's "Chris Matthews Show," the host along with Time magazine's Joe Klein and the Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan said the DOJ should leave Edwards alone (video follows with transcript and commentary):
CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Welcome back. Our big question this week: Does it strike you as appropriate for the justice department to go after John Edwards with a criminal investigation of the use of donated money for Edwards’ mistress and their daughter? Joe Klein?
JOE KLEIN, TIME MAGAZINE: Leave him alone. I mean, why waste our effort on that when we haven't indicted a single banker after the crash of 2008?
MATTHEWS: Gloria.
GLORIA BORGER, CNN: I don't know enough of the facts. I don't know whether Edwards personally directed that this money should go to some kind of cover-up of his mistress but millions of dollars. This?
MATTHEWS: Was it campaign money though?
BORGER: I don't know the answer.
KLEIN: Billions.
ELISABETH BUMILLER, NEW YORK TIMES: I don't know enough of the facts.
MATTHEWS: Andrew, do you like the smell of this case?
ANDREW SULLIVAN, DAILY BEAST: No I don’t, and I agree entirely with my esteemed colleague Joe that we should focus on the people who plunged this country...
MATTHEWS: Yeah, we got enough real crime out there without worrying about this stuff. That’s my view.
Who thinks Klein, Matthews and Sullivan would feel this way if Edwards was a Republican?

I don't want to leave it

I don't want to leave it allow. The POS has been exposed for what he is. I wish the US Attorney will put the final nail in his coffin. I hope he loses his law license too. I wish he'd have to move to rented trailer on the outskirts of Durham after he gets out of prison. Serve him right after how he has a hand in causing everyone of us to pay more for car and medical insurance.

If they've got the facts, and it's a slam-dunk.............bust his tilley faggot ass!!! And don't let him be defended by a guy as conniving as he is, either - if that is possible. This guy is the definitive example (along with Chuck U. Shumer) of a sleazy slime-ball lawyer..........who made a small fortune selling BS, and costing millions of people billions of dollars.
I want to say that I can't believe this wimp was even a 'contender' for the Presidency.........but I look at what we got instead, and I realize that I CAN believe it!!!

So much for "equality" that the left loves.
One reason I hate the left, they like to apply the law differently depending on who or what you are. We're a nation of laws and the law should be applied evenly.

Gee, maybe the two ditz's do not know the facts, because they don't CARE to know them! Let me guess - one is a reporter for the NYT and the other the Wash Post.
Well, I see one is NYT and the other CNN. Yes, I'm sure if it was a former Republican vice presidential candidate, they would be as disinterested.
Good point, Texndoc

This case has been under investigation for years, and now it looks like they are ready to go to trial.
These clowns would be howling to high heaven if the subject was Bush, Cheney, Romney, etc. Imagine if it were Palin -- there'd be endless Tina Fey sketches.
But it's about former progressive darling John "Two Americas" Edwards, so they want to drop it. There are indeed Two Americas: There's the one most of us prefer where law vioplators are given their day in court, and there's the one where elite rich boys like Edwards and the Kennedys get off scott free. Hopefully, Edwards is in the first one this time.

I thought this would never come. The Bush appointee US Attorney for Central NC was behind this big time. They let him stay around a little longer. Then Kay Hagan, our Obama hind tit sucking senator, got him replaced. I figured when the Dems took over the investigation was over. This thing must be real deep because it can't be swept under the rug. The former US Attorney knows what is there and could have made a big stink if they tried to hide it.
John Edwards CHEATED on his dying wife!

Edwards is a first class POS scumbag! The fact that these mindless slobbering DNC fanboys think DOJ should leave him alone -and they pathetically try to justify it with moral relativism- says VOLUMES about the caliber of their character.
Yeah, leave him alone because he's a Democrat and wasn't responsible for crashing the economy. Oh, wait! Which party was running Congress and SUPPOSED to be overseeing Fannie and Freddie and keeping them from bringing the whole financial industry down around them? That's right, the DEMOCRATS! The entire party is every single bit as responsible for the financial collapse as the Wall St. executives, and as far as I'm concerned, they should ALL be sharing cells in the federal pen.
Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

But his intentions were good. As the teleprompter messiah has shown us, we must overlook certain crime for the greater good. The USA is now the new Zimbabwe. The good new is that we are first among the african nations.

Let's see, in the MSM liberal news we had a week where the Gropinator admitted parenting a kid not of his wife's. Now, there's a contradiction of parental cheats, Arnie and a Kennedy. Gee, I thought it was a right of passage for the Kennedy clan. And this guy, John Babyface McJerk. Who was sneeking out when his wife was deathly ill of cancer. Boink, boink, boink. Now the legal system wants to put a blind eye on philandering cheats. Figures.
They'll get what they want.

Being cynical and pessimistic, I predict the DoJ will do just as Chris, Joe, and Andrew wish: give Edwards as much as a slap on the wrist and as little as no punishment at all. I'd like to be wrong.
Put him in the Big House.

If nothing else, why should we deprive Ben Dover and his butt buddies the privilege of taking John Boy to the Prom?

I had totally forgotten that this guy was Kerry's running mate in 2004!
This bring up a very interesting thought experiment:
Let's image that Palin runs in 2012 and drops out or doesn't win the nomination. Fast forward to 2015 where the following comes out:
She was having an affair during the 2012 campaign while her husband was publicly fighting cancer.
She secretly had a baby by this lover.
She convinces her top aid to claim motherhood of the child during the campaign.
She then owns up to it (after DNA tests prove her a liar).
Finally she is indicted for using $1M from her 2012 campaign funds to pay off her lover to keep this all quite.
Oh... ...one more thing. She allegedly calls her lover an idiot for not destroying the steamy sex tape they made together during the campaign after a judge rules that certain of her statements made under oath would be made public.
Hmmm... ...yes I am sure that Chris and his excellent panel in 2015 would be urging the justice dept. to leave her alone....
...just as soon as the thrill up his leg stopped tingling.
Seriously though, The John Edwards Affair should be Exhibit A, when the Main Stream Media is finally convicted by the public of their blatant double standards.

Edwards should go to prison for what he did. After all, the left gloated over Bernie Madoff going to prison. John Edwards is as big a con man.
But let's be fair. Let's send Daschle, Geithner, Rangel, and all the rest of the "better than the average man" leftys to prison with him.
BTW, anybody investigating "The One" and his fundraising? Maybe he should join them all. The could get a group rate.

As partisan activist "journalists", these gasbags are only interested in one thing - opposition research. Edwards is not the opposition.
Palin vice-presidential candidacy, on the other hand, provoked scores of reporters to fly to Wasilla to dig in her trash, and, the AP to assign 11 people to her book to mine for dirt.
None of these journOlistas deserve respect or the powerful positions they hold. They are disgraceful professional poseurs.

Had this slime been an Republican, Tingles and the rest of his radical buddies would want him to go straight to jail, with no trial. Obviously, there are no morals or brains coming from whatever show these jerks are on.
Put aside the morality, or lack of it exhibited by Edwards
Submitted by Radical1979 on Sun, 05/29/2011 - 7:40pm.
Consider the law. Campaign money is not allowed to be used for personal "affairs". This money is tax free and must be highly regulated. The fact that Edwards is an embarrassment to liberals shouldn't be a factor. Of course they'd like this shoved under the rug so they can bash any GOP possible candidate who raises his head.
Before we go after any bankers, let's go after Barney Frank who caused the whole mess.
