Greg Gutfeld: Obama's Media Honeymoon Lasting Longer Than Most Marriages

By Noel Sheppard | May 21, 2011 | 13:10

At a function commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first live presidential news conference Monday, veteran journalists bemoaned the fact that the press are too "timid" at such events today.

On Thursday, "Red Eye's" Greg Gutfeld pointed out that this is because "The media loved President Obama from the moment their gazes met from across that smoky room...So all the smart folks knew that from the start, Obama's honeymoon would outlive most marriages" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

GREG GUTFELD: So some veteran journalists have piled on the current roster of White House correspondents, accusing them of being too nice to Captain Perfect. This happened during a media shindig Monday, marking the 50th anniversary of the first live televised news conference by JFK.

Now, some blame the 24 hour news cycle for making press conferences less important, boring, and more staged. Maybe so. But I think these old coots are avoiding the real culprit behind these mundane conferences, and that is this: The press got their guy. The media loved President Obama from the moment their gazes met from across that smoky room. They accepted him unconditionally, for he is one of them: an academic liberal, progressive crusader, Democrat, West Wing fan, closet smoker.

On the other hand, he was the first black President - and you know how the media hates that sort of thing.

So all the smart folks - i.e. me and my masseuse Antonio - knew that from the start, Obama's honeymoon would outlive most marriages. For the media to turn on Obama, he'd have to renounce Lady Gaga or worse kitten videos.

That's why watching a press conference, and expecting a "truth to power" moment, is like watching The View and expecting coherence. Other than a mild risk-free display of angst for the sake of theater, forget about any kind of defiance. It's just rude.

But the real folly is watching these old reporters criticizing the new crop for being timid. Cuz something tells me they'd be doing the same thing. They're just mad they aren't there to do it.

And if you disagree with me, you sir are worse than Hitler.

To be sure, in the past 29 months, there have been moments when it seemed the honeymoon was ending, but the love being expressed for Obama by so-called journalists today is possibly deeper and more disgraceful than what we saw in 2008 when he was first running for president.

Suddenly every Republican presidential candidate is a racist. His possible female opponents, Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin, are too stupid for the job.

Even liberals having the nerve to criticize the current White House resident are being disparaged for doing so. Others are allegedly having a hard time getting their anti-Obama pieces published.

Yes, the media got their guy, and they're going to do everything in their power to keep him.

GOP candidates: You have been warned!

Submitted by Mary Louise Turner on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 2:00pm.

Here's something you GOP candidates must remember come this campaign season. You and your families are about to be subject to some horrible verbal abuse at the hands of unrepentant so called "journalists".   Look what happened to Mrs. Palin in 2008 (and, unbelievably, still goes on). You'd better be ready for personal attacks, probes into alleged scandals, etc., and you'd better have a skin thicker than leather.

The make believe media continues its irresponsible love affair with Ears O'Plenty, and as Mr. Gutfeld said, it might be even worse, a very scary thought in itself.

I am very concerned about the attacks on family.

Submitted by NL207 on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 5:02am.

My Republican Committee is having a VERY difficult time locating potential candidates for state and federal offices. All of them are concerned about attacks by the MSM against their families. Most of them are OK dealing with these tactics aimed at them, but the MSM does not stop with the candidate. They now savage their family members as well. This MSM strategy is having a decided impact on candidate recruitment.

The MSM isn't about to turn on Obama

Submitted by Dave. on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 2:41pm.

Obama is to the far-left what Moses was to the children of Israel.

He has been able to do what no dem POTUS has been able too - after 100 years of wandering in the desert, he has finally brought them to the edge of their version of the Jordan River (Styx), their promised land is now in sight, and he is about to send us over as a nation.

As such, Obama can do no wrong in their eyes.

One thing about Obama. He has state run media and doesn't have to pay for it.The lame stream media does it for free. They fight for the right to stick their heads up his a$$.I wonder how many suffer from neck injuries when he makes a sharp turn?

well99,

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if a few of them suffocated.  :-^)

I haven't seen fawning media coverage like this since the days of the U.S.S.R., but at least with them you knew most of it was being coerced by the government with the keys to the gulags.

What is happening in this country appears to be voluntary.

As I see it, there are only three possibilities:

  1. They whole-heartedly support what this man is doing to this country.
  2. The are too separated from reality to understand what Obama is doing.*
  3. George Soros has Polaroids of them in bed with a dead woman/man or a live boy/girl.

*Though I lean heavily toward No. 1, I can see this as being a significant part of it, if only because so many conservatives among us appear equally oblivious.

Most days I get the feeling I am residing in a parallel universe that got short circuited somehow.

There may come a time

Submitted by needle on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 5:52pm.

There may come a time (2012 sounds good) when Obama completely flames out and the nation as a whole jumps the shark, leaving the whole MSM and their creature swirling down the tubes.

Hey at least I can fantasize.

- Looking forward to the self-annihilation of the Manipulated Stories Machine.

POLL QUESTION: What political reporter would you say that you trust the most?

POLL RESULTS: 1. 21% said “Don’t Know. 2. 15% was “None 3. 9% selected Bill O'Reilly 4. See link above. Note that NBC's Brian Williams only received 4%,

POLL QUESTION: What political news source do you trust the most?

POLL RESULTS: 1. 28% - FOX News  2. 18% - CNN 3. 10% - NBC  4. See link above. Note that ABC and CBS received only 6%.

The left-wing media may have the resources of George Soros, but it appears that the integrity watchdog media (MRC, NewsBusters, conservative talk radio, Michelle Malkin, etc.)  are winning the trust of the American people.

<< Suddenly every Republican presidential candidate is a racist. >>

And when it was a Dem challenging Obama in the 2008 Dem primaries, she and, especially, her husband were also accused of racism and offending the black community.

Accusing critics and opponents of being racist has been the Go To Guy for the Obama crowd starting the instant Barry announced his candidacy. Bill Clinton wasn't even safe.

I like this guy. He has a ton of common sense and while it's critical we have the Becks and Limbaughs of the world to hammer home the severity of what's going on, I think there's a place for someone to state logical positions in a fun, light-hearted way too.

As for the media being too nice with Obama, I think there's some benefits to that. If it wasn't for Chris Matthews massaging Obama's colon on a nightly basis, David Gregory might have been forever trapped inside Obama's bowels. Thanks to Tingles, NBC found a great new lefty host!

The honeymoon is over - now, it's a solid marriage

Submitted by Chris Norman on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 12:43am.

And this romance is not just still an infatuation, as it was during the campaign. With his all his flaws, political, personal, and managerial so blatantly obvious, the media's love for him has deepened into a long term commitment - ahhhhhh. Some of them probably even hope they will reach the golden anniversary with him still in office. They must now love him for his flaws. Like some victims of spousal abuse, the worse he treats them, the more they can't seem to live without him
