Santorum Strikes Back at Behar's 'Big Homophobe' Remark
As NewsBusters previously reported, Joy Behar called former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) a "big homophobe" on the HLN program bearing her name Monday.
Santorum struck back Wednesday on WOR radio's "The Steve Malzberg Show" saying, "This is really the problem that we see on the left which is the personalization of politics" (audio follows with transcript and commentary):
STEVE MALZBERG, HOST: I don’t know if you heard. I’m sure you did. Joy Behar talking to Don Lemon, a CNN, a CNN anchor…
RICK SANTORUM: (Laughs)
MALZBERG: …who just came out of the closet…
SANTORUM: Yeah.
MALZBERG: She gratuitously threw this in. Let’s hear cut one, Bobby.
(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)
JOY BEHAR, HLN: Now, I know that you’re an objective newsperson.
DON LEMON, CNN: Yeah.
BEHAR: And so, you’re going to have people sit there with you like Rick Santorum who seems like a big homophobe and others because they’re running for president or whatever and will talk about gay marriage, etc. How do you feel that you’ll be able to handle that easily?
(END AUDIO CLIP)
MALZBERG: Alright, where does she get that you are a homophobe?
SANTORUM: Yeah, ’cause I, I guess because you stand for traditional marriage and you believe that, you know, that people should, we should have a society that affirms one man and one woman as marriage, that makes you someone who’s a hater, someone that doesn’t, doesn’t like people. I disagree with people, by the way, who are gay and straight who believe in changing the marriage laws. But it’s a public policy discussion, and this is the, this is really the problem that we see on the left which is the personalization of politics. I mean, we have a policy disagreement, and, and which I am very passionate about. I admit that. Because I do believe the family, integrity of the family is important for the future of our country. But that does not mean that, that I don’t like people or I hate people or that there’s something wrong. The only thing that’s wrong is their opinion.
MALZBERG: Yeah, so when you hear some, when you hear somebody like Joy Behar who typifies the Left, what do you think when you’re hearing this?
SANTORUM: It’s, it’s, I think this is exactly the politics they play, which is they don’t want to have the discussion about what the real effects are. For example, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and now we see at least that was attempted for the Navy to make chaplains, you know, marry people in the Navy who are same-sex couples. I mean, they don’t want to talk about the logical consequences of the policy discussions that we’re having. They’d rather just attack people for being haters and not really talk about the substance of the problem. And that’s, that’s not going to further, you know, public discourse in this country, and certainly in my opinion doesn’t further their cause.
Santorum hit the nail right on the head.
Liberal media commentators these days are not only clueless about the issues, they really have no interest in discussing them.
Everything from the Left now is ad hominem attacks - nothing more. Their speech and/or writing patterns have devolved to the way anonymous people of differing views flame each other on message boards.
The difference is, of course, that these folks actually get paid for such assaults and are congratulated by their followers like gladiators hearing thunderous applause at the Coliseum.
Seems like years since they were disingenuously calling for a toning down of the rhetoric after Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was shot.
In case you have forgotten, that was only four months ago.
How time flies when you're heaping scorn.

homophobe, racist, birther, denier? I just can't keep track of what I'm supposed to be these days, at least according to the left.
And, as many here have pointed out, it's only going to get much, much worse as we get into the run-up to the 2012 election.

So you're claiming Santorum is running against Obama because of Larry Sinclair?
Shame on Malzberg for even bringing Behar up.

Who the hell cares? Nobody watches her idiotic show.
It just elevates the moronic crone to paint her as "newsworthy", which I'm sure gives her great delight.
I'm gonna disagree with my best buddy in the world just a little

Because Rick Santorum has been on record on the matters of privacy laws, he has been unfairly targeted by the homosexual community on the internet. Such that a search of "Rick Santorum" on google comes up with a link (2nd in the results) to a nasty sexual term made expressly to denigrate him as well as pictures of Hitler. It is exactly this controversy that Behar has in mind to when she calls him names.
Thats right Rick, the media lies

My issue with gay "marriage"...
Submitted by Tom1969ca on Wed, 05/18/2011 - 9:30pm.
My issue with gay marriage isn't the "gay" part; I can accept that, even though the lifestyle is at odds with my own values, it is possible for two same-sex people to love one another and want to make some kind of legally-binding commitment to each other.
Fine. That's what civil unions are for.
My issue with gay marriage is the "marriage" part. For the better part of at least the last 4,000 years, marriage has been a sacrament of organized religion - be it Judaism, Christianity, Islam, or what have you. These religious institutions have decreed, based on their interpretations of their Holy Books, that the sacrament of marriage is conferred on a man and a woman. By legally changing the definition of marriage, Congress is de facto telling a religious body how it must interpret its scriptures.
So much for the separation of church and state....

Their response to that is "We're only talking about "civil marriages!"
Sure! There's already pressure on the Catholic church (from within) to reform it's position on homosexuality (in conjunction with abortion, female priests... you know the bit)
Once homosexuality is "normalized", the push will be to bless same sex unions, as other denominations are now doing.
Afterwards, full recognition of same-sex marriage.
Incrementalism. It's in the Alinsky play book.
Up here, this is the reality the church is now facing. Currently, our marriage legislation allows for same sex "marriages", but does not impose that on the churches. The gay lobby is fighting hard to change this through our Human Rights tribunals, and the courts, and my fear is they will succeed.

Homosexuals made up the term homophobe to describe us. I suggest we start using the term "moralphobe" to describe them.

My total revulsion of Behar and anything she blurts out aside, please do not run for president Mr. Santorum. You seem to be a nice and pleasant guy and you mostly do fine appearing on Greta Van Susteren's show, but as a presidential candidate, there's a definite whiff of "loser" surrounding you. Let's concentrate on finding and nominating the best person we can to take on and defeat this holy error we are saddled with. You, Gingrich, and a few others would just clutter up the debates and ballots.

While I disagree with the idea that the government should force me to recognize a gay marriage, I do believe that this is one of the few issues out there where the conventional Leftwing position is not ignorant or foolish. It's a real sign of Behar's profound stupidity that she can't even debate this issue intelligently.

One smear after another until after the election. Hopefully a stalemate with both house go Republican. The press will not allow Obama not to win.

With a complete meltdown like that of the French IMF chief. He wasn't interested in people, but only in grabbing some ass and hitting the road. Back when I was in SDS in Ann Arbor and Billy Ayers had a girlfriend Diana Oughton who made bombs for him---Diana blew herself to pieces in Greenwich Village following his instructions, and before you know it, he's in bed with Bernardine Dohrn.

Because he is only on record in support of civil unions. So I guess liberal logic only defines those on the right as homophobes. If you're on the left and opposed to same sex marriage, you get a waiver.
What's with the left and all these waivers. If their ideas and policies were so sound why would anyone need or want a waiver?
