Soros-Funded Group Falsely Accuses Ron Paul of Comparing Social Security and Medicare to Slavery

By Noel Sheppard | May 15, 2011 | 22:11

The depths the shills on the Left will go to impugn their enemies knows no bounds.

On Sunday, the George Soros-funded organization Think Progress falsely accused Congressman Ron Paul (R-Tx.) of comparing Social Security and Medicare to slavery (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Appearing on Fox News Sunday this morning, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) defended his longstanding view that Medicare, Social Security (and pretty much everything else) violate the Constitution. At one point, Paul even claimed that letting Social Security and similar programs to move forward is just like permitting slavery...

TP then provided a video and partial transcript of the "Fox News Sunday" segment in question. Let's look at the entire thing:

CHRIS WALLACE, HOST: You talk a lot about the Constitution. You say Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, are all unconstitutional.

CONGRESSMAN RON PAUL (R-TEXAS): Technically they are.

WALLACE: Why? Why?

PAUL: There's no authority. Article 1, Section 8 doesn't say I can set up insurance program for people. What part of the Constitution --

(CROSSTALK)

PAUL: The liberals are the ones that use the general welfare.

(CROSSTALK)

WALLACE: OK. All right. Well, I don't know that I'm a liberal, but let's put it up on the screen, because that's exactly the point. Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution: "The Congress shall have the power to lay and collect taxes -- to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States." Doesn't Social Security come under promoting --

PAUL: No. Absolutely --

WALLACE: -- promoting the general welfare?

PAUL: Absolutely not.

WALLACE: Why not?

PAUL: General welfare is a general condition -- maybe sound currency is general welfare, maybe markets, maybe judicial system, maybe a national defense, but this is specific welfare. This justifies the whole welfare state -- the military industrial complex, the welfare to foreigners, the welfare state that imprisons our people and impoverishes our people and gives us our recession.

So, no. Why would you have Article 1, Section 8? And why would you have the Amendment number 9 and 10? That means there is no reason for article 1, number 10 if you believe that? Revenue clause?

That is such an extreme liberal view point that has been mis- taught in our schools for so long. And that's what we have to reverse, that very notion that you're presenting.

WALLACE: Congressman, it's not just a liberal view. It was the decision of the Supreme Court in 1937 when they said that Social Security was constitutional under Article 1, section 8 of the Constitution.

PAUL: Yes. And the Constitution and the court said slavery was legal, too. And we had to reverse that.

So, I'll tell you, just because a court in '37 went very liberal on us and expanded the role of government -- no, I think the original intent is not a bad idea. I think limitation of government power.

If we aren't clear on this, we're going to get into a mess. Our government is going to get very big -- and we're going to have a very big deficit and we're going to have a financial crisis. And it's type of thinking that is leading to us to that very problem that we're facing today.

Anyone with even a room temperature intelligence quotient would understand that Paul's point was a court in 1937 finding Social Security constitutional doesn't necessarily mean that's the case.

There have been many laws that were upheld by one set of Supreme Court justices only to be overturned by another years later. Slavery of course was one of them.

With this in mind, Paul was by no means equating Social Security and Medicare to slavery. He was instead saying that in his view, the Supreme Court finding in 1937 was wrong, and used slavery as an example of when the Court was similarly so.

Just like many of the Court's controversial rulings - Roe v. Wade of course among them - the Constitutionality of Social Security has been argued for decades.

Historians - sadly unlike most Americans, particularly those on the New Deal-loving Left - are well aware that many of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's programs were struck down by the Court, and the expectation was that Social Security would be as well.

This is what led Roosevelt to propose the Judicial Procedures Reform Bill of 1937 which would have given him the authority to add as many as seven justices to the Court thereby assuring approval of any program he could get through his Democrat-controlled Congress.

In the end, JPRB didn't pass, but it is believed the mere threat of such court-stacking led Justice Owen Roberts to change his view of the New Deal and vote in favor of FDR's programs from that point forward including Social Security.

Whether Social Security would have passed without FDR's court-stacking threat has been a point of historical debate for decades, one that Paul is clearly more aware of than the shills at TP.

Of greater import is how TP feels comfortable misrepresenting the words of a sitting Congressman. If only such an occurrence was a rarity.

What would one expect from an organization so heavily-backed by Soros?

Think Progress is partially

Submitted by jdhawk on Sun, 05/15/2011 - 10:49pm.

Think Progress is partially defined in Discover the Networks (http://discoverthenetworks.org) as follows:
Think Progress is a "project" of the American Progress Action Fund (APAF), a "sister advocacy organization" of the John Podesta-led Center for American Progress (CAP) and CAP's entities such as Campus Progress. It also draws freely on the resources of the George Soros-funded Media Matters website edited by David Brock.

Here is one of their more egregious "news" articles:
Legum and Harvey co-authored a January 2005 article with Jonathan Baskin titled "The Death Squad Option" that suggested American troops were wantonly killing or kidnapping suspect Iraqis. Drawing a parallel with Reagan policy in El Salvador in the 1980s, the authors cited a 1993 United Nations-sponsored "truth commission" report claiming that up to "90 percent of the atrocities in the conflict" were committed by the U.S.-sponsored "death squads." "Faced with an intractable insurgency in Iraq," wrote Legum, Harvey and Baskin, "the Pentagon is returning to its bad old ways."

What does any of this have to do with us?

Submitted by The_Independent_Rage on Sun, 05/15/2011 - 11:02pm.

"Us" meaning Independents -- you know, the people who decide all of your election outcomes. Loony left-wingers like Soros going after deranged right-wingers like Paul. Who gives a rat's behind? LOL!

It matters because the left

Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Sun, 05/15/2011 - 11:46pm.

It matters because the left is smearing the right and it matters to you an independent being able to get the real scoop. Ron Paul is a loon and a Libertarian but the public associates him with the right because he likes to run for President.

Ron Paul is a Republican . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 7:45am.

. . . and that's why he's associated with the Right -- at least as far as the MSM is concerned.

For all it's talk, the GOP is a Big Government party. The Democratic Party is certainly a Bigger Government party, but there are few Republican career Senators and Representatives who are genuinely onboard for a major shake-up in Washington.

I know many will argue the point, but we merely need look at the record of Bush-43 and the GOP-controlled Congress. Where was the balanced budget?

I don't know why Paul remains a Republican; his libertarian perspective scares the hell out of his Party's elite, and he'l;l never get the GOP nomination. He ought to run on his own.

Why Ron Paul is a "r"epublican

Submitted by Hillbilly Genius on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 11:07am.

Ron Paul is a little "r" republican in the same respect as Thomas Jefferson was the original little "r" republican. He is for the original founding of the party that adhered to the Constitution of the United States. The warped "R"epublican group we have now is not what was intended and only a few politicians that believe the way he does are even in office now. Another reason he is a member of the GOP is what I have said for years. States decide what parties are on the ballot for elections which is why each state holds a primary. 3 of the 50 states make it very difficult to even get an Independent on the ballot with Alabama being the least difficult but not by much. What candidate in their right mind would run for president as an Independent or Libertarian knowing they would lose 3 states right from the get go. Even his own state of Texas doesn't make it remotely easy for a 3rd party candidate to get on the ballot. That's why he's a member of the GOP and as far as ya'll saying he's a crazy or off his rocker candidate then I say to you, "Enjoy your koolaid because Obama isn't the only one handing it out." Why do you people even come onto a sight pointing out liberal bias and then turn around and believe the same bullshit coming from the right? You're simply talking about the lesser of two evils and I'm talking about a complete revolution in the making. Think about it folks. When was the last time you got to actually vote for the best candidate instead of one that isn't as bad as the other? I'm telling you, put Ron Paul in the seat and we won't have buyer's remorse in 8 years when he's done everything we should have been doing all along. I don't think this one man can change everything but he's a damn sight better than anything we've offered in over a century. Even the GOP's beloved Ronald Reagan looked up to him. You tube that!

Social Security has been

Submitted by RR GOP on Sun, 05/15/2011 - 11:13pm.

Social Security has been pilfered for decades for the benefit of those who never did, or only briefly paid into it...that was not the intent.

As for Medicare and Medicaid they've been hurt by the privatization of health care systems, insurance companies, fraud and a growing population of non-taxpayers.

"...provide for ... general welfare of the United States."

Submitted by Red Jeep on Sun, 05/15/2011 - 11:18pm.

BTW. Providing for the general welfare OF the United States, the country, doesn't mean providing for the general welfare of people.

Providing for the general welfare of the United States is things like funding a military to protect the welfare of the United States, the country.

they are setting this all up, using Ron Paul and his racist past to smear all of us with!

posted this on the other Paulnut posting related to CRA

Submitted by JPniner on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 1:31pm.

The MSM is setting Paul up, first by spreading the Lie that he is the "Godfather" of the Tea Party...then asking questions like this.

At any moment they can trot out the "Ron Paul Newsletters" which for a decade contained Racist, Anti-Semitic and Crackpot conspiracy content out. They can show where he has catered to and sold his books on Neo-Nazi, holocaust denying websites, and of course all of his Neo-Nazi support as part of his base.

By branding Paul, "Godfather" of the Tea Party, they can take this through the Presidential Campaign and brand the Tea Party what they've tried all along, "Racist" and "Nuts"....and with Paul attached, it will work.

The MSM plays footsie with Paul the last several years, because they know this and like how he's working to destroy the GOP from within.

Think Progress

Submitted by Phryj1 on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 2:48pm.

A group that is neither about thinking or progress.

Talk amongst yourselves.

Although I will say TP is a good abbreviation. Think Progress should be balled up and flushed down the nearest toilet.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.
