Bill Moyers Tells Tavis Smiley Television Isn't Liberal Enough

By Noel Sheppard | May 14, 2011 | 15:01

Noel Sheppard's picture

Did you know that television isn't liberal enough?

That's what Bill Moyers told PBS's Tavis Smiley Friday (video follows with transcript of commentary):

BILL MOYERS, PBS: Television, including public television, rarely gives a venue to people who have refused to buy into the ruling ideology of Washington. The ruling ideology of Washington is, “We have two parties, they do their job, they do their job pretty well. The differences between them limit the terms of the debate.” But we know that real change comes from outside the consensus. Real change comes from people making history, challenging history, dissenting, protesting, agitating, organizing. Those voices that challenge the ruling ideology - two parties, the best of all worlds do a pretty good job - those voices get constantly pushed to the, to the stage, to the areas of the stage you can’t see or hear.

Just who is offering a "stage" for such voices. Try to guess:

MOYERS: You can get, you get some voices like those on your show, you get them on Amy Goodman, on "Democracy Now," and a few other places like that, but not as a steady presence in the public discourse.

So, in Moyers' view, the perilously liberal "Democracy Now," Amy Goodman, and Tavis Smiley are offering a stage for voices that are "challenging history, dissenting, protesting, agitating, organizing." And we need more venues for such voices.

Imagine that: television isn't liberal enough. Who'd have thought it?

But there was more in this discussion between two of the most radical tax-funded media figures in the nation that was destined to raise some eyebrows:

TAVIS SMILEY, HOST: I read the charter of what public television and public radio were created to do, and I say this, and it may be politically incorrect to say on PBS, but we are not living up to that charter. We're not living up to it on public television, we’re not living up to it on public radio when it comes to a diversity and inclusion of other voices. We’re not living up to that. So I wonder whether or not in some ways we deserve being pricked a little bit, pushed a little bit if we're not living up to the charter, but you tell me.

So Smiley is concerned that PBS and NPR aren't living up to their charter because they're not offering a diversity of views. That's a concept most conservatives would agree with.

However, to someone like Moyers, diversity means - wait for it! - more liberal opinion:

MOYERS: I don't think we're living up to that charter that Lyndon Johnson proclaimed, no, I don't. The conservatives have won to this extent: too many people in public television and public radio are looking over their shoulders fearing that the Right is after them. We don't really have a Left in this country. There is no organized Left that comes after journalists the way that the Right comes after journalists who offer a different alternative. This is an old story, Tavis. Richard Nixon and Pat Buchanan, his communications director, tried to do in public broadcasting back in the early ’70s when they accused us of being liberal when in fact we were just offering an alternative view of reality – something they don’t want.

Got that?

Public television and public radio are not fulfilling their charter because they're not liberal enough.

Any questions?

Here's the "NPR Charter," today.

Submitted by Gary Hall on Sat, 05/14/2011 - 3:35pm.

Well, here's the NPR Charter, Noel - Yep, this is not liberal/leftist enough??

NPR. Amy Goodman of Democracy Now hands it over to Noam Chomsky: "The U.S. and Its Allies Will Do Anything to Prevent Democracy in the Arab World"

  • AMY GOODMAN: We turn now to the 25th anniversary of FAIR, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, the media watch group in New York, which just celebrated the 25 years of the reports they’ve come out, documenting media bias and censorship, and scrutinized media practices that marginalize public interest, minority and dissenting viewpoints.
  • One of those who addressed the hundreds of people who gathered to celebrate FAIR was the world-renowned political dissident and linguist Noam Chomsky. This is some of what he had to say.Noam Chomsky: "The U.S. and Its Allies Will Do Anything to Prevent Democracy in the Arab World"

Go to the link and read ole Chomsky's answer.

Yikes.

Once again,  Bill Moyers - Name us a true Republican serving as an anchor, etc., at NPR, CNN, PBS, ABC, NBC, CBS, or MSNBC. Just one.

Find us one, in the MSM, who will challenge the Obama administration to listen to someone besides the 25% (Pew Poll) who support his immigration agenda.

Please don't ask me how I know his show is stupid if I've never watched it. The answer is, I'm familiar with his quotes and his politics and anybody who says and believes what he says and believes could not have anything else but a stupid show.

And who the hell is this angry Smiley guy??? Is he self-important or something?? These two twerps remind me of a couple of wanna-be's (well, an EX-wanna-be, in Moyer's case) sitting around in some dingy bar, trying to sound like they matter..................when nobody else could give a rip - including the bartender.

Submitted by adamsmith on Sun, 05/15/2011 - 7:20am.

Tavis Smiley is just another racist race hustler who preaches to Black Americans how they need to stay on the Democrat Plantation and be good little Socialists. Never to question the authority they let control their lives, and never have a hope of improving their lot in life, or their children for that matter, as "Crackers" will always hold them down. Nice work if you can get it, and I'm sure George Soros sends him a nice monthly bonus check for the Josef Goebbels routine. God forbid Black Americans ever figure out that they have been used by "their own".....The Democrat Party would never win another election. That's the danger of employing Identity Politics......

Let me get this straight. If Tavis Smiley is selling out the interests of other black people, and is beholden to "the man", doesn't that make him an Uncle Tom? Ironic, no?

The left has been broadcasting on radio and tv for centuries and only recently, now have competition with Fox, millions of viewers, Rush with millions of listeners, Newsbusters and Breitbart with millions of followers. The left is outraged that they now have competition. Americans are wising up and even with Soros cash, the msm is going down. Wonder why these has beens like moyers keep trying to push their agenda. No one cares or listens.

Moyers and Smiley will never be happy until they can snatch babies from their mothers and raise them in liberal cattle pens like Pol Pot did, forcing them to watch 'West Wing' and 'Brokeback Mountain' with their eyelids held open by toothpicks.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

An alternate view of reality Bill?!?

Submitted by Boil It Down on Sat, 05/14/2011 - 6:45pm.

Exactly which alternate views does Moyers think aren't in the discourse? Do we really need any more liberal induced hallucinations of our current reality? Moyers refuses to acknowledge the "reality" of the liberal reasons why this nation is circling the drain.

Moyers has obviously not read up on the damage that Lyndon Johnson caused with his "Great Society" debacle or he wouldn't be foolish enough to lament not living up to his "charter". Maybe if he'd lift his head out of his cocktail long enough to achieve lucidity he'd start making a little sense. -bidn-

Of course, Moyers, who spent

Submitted by jdhawk on Sat, 05/14/2011 - 9:56pm.

Of course, Moyers, who spent his lifetime sucking from the goverment teat via taxpayer funded public broadcasting and an avowed socialist, is full of crap. There is both an international and national cabal of leftists that work tirelessly to turn America into a socialist country.

Here is a very scary and disturbing but one of the few web sites on the Internet that captures the width and breadth of the lefist's infrastructure. It is named, Discovery the Networks - A Guide to the Politcal Left. You can find it here: http://discoverthenetworks.org/

Here is a couple of excerpts from the above web site regarding Moyers:
Host and Producer of many programs and series on public broadcasting
Has received at least $20 million in taxpayer money from public broadcasting, but refuses to disclose his income
President of Schumann Center for Media & Democracy
Played key role in shaping socialist "Great Society" programs in President Lyndon B. Johnson's Administration
Authorized notorious LBJ "Daisy" ad in 1964 that suggested Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater would, if elected, cause nuclear war

Moyers announced in February 2004 that he would retire after the November elections. By that time, as many as 30 PBS affiliates had ceased airing Moyers' partisan show Now during pledge drives, partly because its blatant bias alienated many potential contributors. Now had also become an ethical embarrassment because Moyers, as of 2003, had used his taxpayer-subsidized PBS show to promote guests from at least 16 leftist organizations that had gotten at least $4.8 million in grants from the Schumann Center for Media and Democracy. Moyers had neglected to inform his audience of this conflict of interest involving an organization of which he was President and from which he personally pocketed $200,000 per year.

Like Maher, Moyers was kicked off a nationlly televised program because of his far left biases and in Moyers case graft and corruption.
