Retired Anchorman Apologizes for Presenting Both Sides of Global Warming Debate

By Noel Sheppard | April 24, 2011 | 10:21

Noel Sheppard's picture

“For those of you who are confused [about global warming], you’re forgiven. It’s my fault.”

So hysterically said retired Minneapolis anchorman Don Shelby during a speech at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, Tuesday:

After spending 32 years in front of the camera as an anchorman and investigative reporter for WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, Don Shelby wanted to apologize to people about climate change. [...]

Shelby was speaking at the University of Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday on what he called “The most important story since journalism began — global climate change.” His speech served as the kick-off for a two-day sustainability fair sponsored by UMD’s Office of Sustainability.

The TV newsman’s mea culpa about having misreported climate change came after of years of treating the story the same as he would any other, requiring the views of two opposing parties, Shelby told the packed lecture hall of the chemistry building.

But, he said, climate change is not a pro or con issue; it’s a scientific fact. And journalists who work to “balance” a story present an inaccurate picture when they give equal weight to sources promulgating inaccurate facts.

“If I report a story on abuse of children, I don’t go out and interview an abuser on the up-side of child abuse,” he said as an example of how an effort to balance can go too far.

Yes, global temperatures rising by about one degree Celsius in the past 160 years as we came out of a solar minimum, radically increased the population, and replaced grasslands and forests with cities, skyscrapers, concrete and asphalt is akin to abusing a child.

There's therefore only one side to the story as to why the planet got hotter, and reporting the other far more logical one is like letting a child-abuser explain why beating kids is okay.

This is what passes as critical thinking in journalism today. And this man was speaking to a group of college students filling their minds with the same lack of objectivity.

Scarier still, for 32 years Shelby reported to the citizens of Minneapolis and St. Paul on television and radio. Makes you wonder what other biases the Emmy Award-winning "newsman" has been sharing all those years if he's willing to stand up in front of an audience and claim he was misrepresenting this issue.

Having never lived in Minnesota and therefore not the slightest bit familiar with Shelby, I have no idea what his political leanings are beyond this bizarre mea culpa concerning global warming.

For a clue, at his My Space page, Shelby lists one of his heroes as the perilously liberal Charles Kuralt, and claims the person he'd most like to interview is Osama bin Laden. This is a picture of him prominently displayed:

Remind you of anything?

The picture of him is from Obamicon.me and anyone can do this. Doesn't prove he's a Barry disciple, but then again...

Makes you wonder why someone in a form of journalism would follow journalistic ethics for 30+ years (assuming he's telling the truth on this) and then alter his methods after retiring. Was he unhappily doing his job for three decades where he undoubtedly had to report on the coming ice age hysteria as well, or was he co-opted by the college for this speech?

"DFL Don"

Submitted by The Admiral on Sun, 04/24/2011 - 11:32am.

Here in the Twin Cities he's been known as "DFL Don." DFL is the Democrat Party here, it stands for Democrat-Farm-Labor.

There's no question his reporting has been left of center, that's evident to anyone from the Cities.

I'm kind of surprised at this whole thing, particularly him saying that global climate change is real. That's absurd, and to have him state it as fact is really disappointing, particularly when there are no facts. I expected better from him.

Man Induced Climate Change

Submitted by richb313 on Sun, 04/24/2011 - 11:49am.

How very apologetic he is. I wonder if he even understands the term Scientific fact. Gravity is a scientific fact. We understand that more mass means more gravitational attraction. How gravity works is still theoretical but the effects of it are not in dispute.

Quantum Mechanics is a theory that works and we use it in designing microchips and explaining what we can and cannot observe in the nano world of sub atomic particles but we do not know how or why it is this way. Many aspects of it are still hotly debated but until a better explanation comes along we use it because it works.

On the otherhand Man Induced Climate change does not even rise to the critical mass of a theory because it does not work. The models breakdown. There has been no accurate predictions and observations do not line up with the preditions of the models used, none of them do.

It is the scientific illiteracy of what passes for the press these days that is just one of the reasons this story has any traction. Let us put aside for a second the political bias, even absent any, the press still could not report accurately on it.

People are waking up. Where is the climatological devestation? Where are the 50 million climate refuges? How stupid do they think we are?

Yes climate change is fact.

Submitted by danbo on Sun, 04/24/2011 - 11:54am.

Yes climate change is fact. It's been changing since the beginning of the earth. If my memory is correct, there were 5 mass extinctions. All before man turned up. We've had how many ice ages?

The problem these yahoos avoid. Is what's going on unusual. Lookly looks like it if you use tricks to hide things. And adjust data to serve the theory. But hiding things and manipulating data, and efforts to silence those who disagree aren't worthy of reporting.

Does a fraction of 1% of the air over shadow the oceans, and that big ball of light in the sky. Only if you play games and ignore data. The media has decided you will know only what they want you to know.

This man should be ashamed of himself.

Mathematical Models

Submitted by Russian55 on Sun, 04/24/2011 - 12:07pm.

One of the biggest problems (and there are many) of the "proof" of man-caused global warming is the use of mathematical models.

You simply cannot model the climate of the Earth mathematically. It would require a near-infinite number of variables and would need revisions every second.

Even weather models used today are not accurate much more than a few days (and are of only a certain degree of accuracy even a few hours into the future). Yet there are people who want us to believe they can model the climate of the world 50 YEARS into the future.

If someone can build a model to accurately predict where the ball will land on a roulette wheel every time, I might have more faith...

It is a sceintific fact that climate changes

Submitted by Ashrak on Sun, 04/24/2011 - 12:09pm.

but there is absolutely more than one side to the debate as to why it changes, how it changes, when it changes, and what factors play into it happening.

There was a time when the enviromentalists adopted the term "Global Warming". They had "peer reviewed" information that supported the fear tactics that phrase foments until some truth that could not be hidden any longer came out - as in the globe wasn't warming as they had predicted. As time passed, their "models" weren't exactly turning out to match reality as they had claimed. They had to make a shift, a shift to climate change.

Of course climate changes. It does so on the micro level over the course of a day ( think day and night) , it does so over the course of a year (think the four seasons) and so it stands to reason that it would over other periods of time (think decades centuries and beyond) just the same. As a matter of fact, science has shown climate to have changed to and from back and forth, many times over this Planet's history.

I like to ask the man made global warmers to explain how glaciers advanced and receded prior to man's industrialization. I like to ask them to explain why those reasons are not responsible now, but that mankind, especially those evil Americans, can be the only explanation.

The sad fact is that some humans believe themselves to be the controllers of all things. They are so deluded in their mob mentality that they really do think that they can control anything and everything just because they claim it to be so.

Hypocrisy, to the point of hilarity, exists on this point. Those who so preach evolution (sometimes as if it constitutes origin) and vote for "change", those who want to redistribute everything, defy the scientific laws of nature in order to claim that climate remains static, unchanging, absent humanity's activity.

To be sure, if we make a mess, we should clean it up. However, carbon dioxide is a natural element, not pollution, that this planet requires as part of the cycle of life that exists on this planet. An abundance of it, like oxygen and hydrogen, is a very good thing and it would be a very bad thing for us all, plants included, without it.

Bluntly stated, these folks today believe that government was created to control the weather, along with everything and everyone else. Democracy to them means the majority rules all, right down to every electron and proton in the universe. Such foolishness it all is. Such an exit from actuality it is. I can only conclude these folks have the minds of five year olds and live in the utopia that can only exist in that setting - the imagination of the young undeveloped mind.

It is said they have lost their minds, I submit that they never had them to lose to begin with. They are herded sheep who have never developed the ability to think for themselves, to think it through. We cannot control the universe, much less the climate on this planet, and trying to do so will only see our own destruction in terms of extinction. What we can do is adapt to it, and all the changes that will come, as time ticks forward.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Here in Las Vegas, from '93

Here in Las Vegas, from '93 when summer was like getting blasted by an oven, to all the artificial lakes, etc. and AC's, we now get high humidity. Does this affect the weather outside of Las Vegas? I seriously doubt it, but I think these believers think it does!!! They extrapolate out to get the fear mongering stats. Sickening and inaccurate!!!

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

He equates AGW with child abuse?!?

Submitted by Phryj1 on Sun, 04/24/2011 - 12:14pm.

I was going to comment on his using the same argument from authority fallacy the left goes to when they want opposing voices to be silenced, but equating global warming with child abuse is even worse.
And if this dummy wants to go there, don't journalists have a responsibility to let the accused child abuser say something in their defense, just in case he's innocent of the charge against him? Remember "innocent until proven guilty"? So, don't journalists ALSO have the responsibility to let scientists and other experts who will argue that humans aren't causing global warming, that it's not a concern, or that it's not even happening -as recent data shows- make their case? Yes, they do have that responsibility.
In this case, suppressing those making a case against AGW alarmism is all about thought control. AGW scaremongers don't want anyone questioning their claims, which is fundamentally anti-intellectual AND anti-scientific. AGW is nothing more that tool used by scammers like Al Gore and socialists like Van Jones to advance their agendas.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

You're a liar, Don

"If I report a story on abuse of children, I don’t go out and interview an abuser on the up-side of child abuse."

You're a liar, Don, for I live in Minneapolis and I've SEEN you do just that. For example, on housing for sex offender parolees. You have made several interviews with those sex offenders, right here in Minneapolis. So don't lie to people. Be honest with us, Don.  The only reason you covered both sides of the issue was because you were forced to by the producers of WCCO News.

Of course, you're the reason why I stopped watching Channel 4 news. That viewership ended the day you went on the air at the end of the 6:00 news broadcast and tried to justify Al Gore's Nobel Prize.  You remember, the one he got for how many people he was going to save "in the future" thanks to his continual "fight" against "global warming," which is exactly how you tried to justify it, remember? That on-air editorial, the first I've ever seen on WCCO, proved your bias succinctly.

That tells me all I need to know about the "warmers" like him: they aren't blaming the human population for producing global warming; they are instead blaming global warming for producing (increasing) the human population! The warmers like him are in reality, EUGENICISTS-- they think there's too many people on earth, regardless of the type of vehicle they drive (or lack thereof)-- thus, in their minds, there is only one solution that will "fix" their imaginary problem: the eradication of people, except for themselves, of course......

Don Shelby thorn in WCCO TV side

Submitted by david999 on Sun, 04/24/2011 - 4:00pm.

#14 You are right about Don Shelby. Once he left... ZOOM the ratings go up. The network news anchors should all leave along with the reporters that hang on for decades. Replace them all and replace them with actual reporters and see the ratings go up.

Google search: WCCO TV ratings go up

After a November marked by anchor Don Shelby's retirement, WCCO-TV announced it had won a monthly 10 p.m. ratings war among advertiser-coveted 25-to-54-year-olds for the first time in 24 years.

-Snip-
Rosatti adds that the station showed double-digit demo gains for all newscasts except the 10, including 5 a.m. (up 20 percent), 6 a.m. (82 percent), 5 p.m. (37 percent) and 6 p.m. (17 percent). WCCO won December demo at 5 a.m., noon and 5 p.m.. In November, the station narrowly lost the 5 a.m. race to KSTP and KARE. I didn't get 4:30 a.m. numbers this go-round.

Having to change the name of the game is telling, as Okiehawk pointed out. When the weatherman can show me the track of a hurricane 5...no, make that 2 days out without the computer models giving me a diagram that looks like a plate of spaghetti, then I might believe they can forecast...um..2 days out. As to next year, they have already blown that one, let alone 20 years in the future.
Here's something, the medieval warm period is a proven scientific fact within recorded history, when the earth was much warmer than today. When they can explain the cause of that, maybe, just maybe, I'll give them the time of day.

Has Minnesota gone temporate?

Submitted by ThisnThat on Sun, 04/24/2011 - 8:41pm.

Are there no more winters in MN? Have palm trees returned to International Falls? What kind of real evidence does this TV character site to prove that (a) the world is getting warmer, and (b) because of man?

I guess the -46 degree temperature on January 21 this year was just a fake report? (The fact is, this set a record for low temperature at International Falls on that date).

What makes me really angry is that these jackasses get to say whatever they want -- and no one steps up to the plate and calls them out on it. I wonder why colleges even exist any more -- they sure do a piss-poor job of educating, don't they?

News Editors and Lab Coat Consultants to Face Criminal Charges

Submitted by mememine69 on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 2:10am.

In the United States at least, former climate change believers are now en masse contacting local district attorneys, politicians and law makers to have the leading scientists and especially leading news editors subjected to criminal charges for knowingly sustaining the criminal exaggerations of the CO2 mistake for the last 25 years. It is now appearing that issuing CO2 death threats to billions of children unnecessarily has not gone unnoticed and unlike Bush getting away with his false war in Iraq, the false war of climate change will sooner or later be dealt with in the courts.
And keep in mind that it was the scientists themselves that made environmental protection necessary in the first place when they supposedly polluted the planet with their evil chemicals and cancer causing pesticides and so how ironic is it that we bowed like fools to our Gods of science for 25 years of “unstoppable warming”?
Scientists are not gods and don’t forget that scientists also produced cruise missiles, cancer causing chemicals, land mine technology, nuclear weapons, germ warfare, cluster bombs, strip mining technology, Y2K, Y2Kyoto, deep sea drilling technology and now climate control. Proof of consensus not being real is the fact that scientists did not march in the streets when IPCC funding was pulled, the EPA was castrated and Obama’s not even mentioning the “crisis” in his state of the union speech. Consensus was a myth because if it were true, the consensus scientists declaring a climate emergency would act like it was an emergency and demand their CO2 mitigation be taken seriously. We believed a handful of lab coat consultants who said we could CONTROL the planet’s temperature and prevent it from boiling. Pure insanity as history will call this modern day witch burning. The new denier is anyone still believing voters will vote YES to taxing the air to make the weather colder. Not going to happen.
REAL planet lovers are happy and relieved a crisis was averted and real planet lovers don't hold scientists as Gods and bow to politicians promising to make colder and lower the seas and scare kids with such doomsday glee.
Stay tuned. Call the courthouse.

This is mememine69's 4th post at NB without a trace of a coherent thought. A full-fledged liberal who is just now ostracizing himself for his past vehemence in support of global warming. However, he simply can't resist throwing in the kitchen sink of the rest of the world's sins (Catholic Church, Bush, Iraq War, etc) in his incoherent outrage against his previous -- and long held -- position that CO2 was going to kill the earth's children.

I think it's illustrative of the way a liberal emotes, and tries to pass that emotion off as a logical discussion. Painful to watch, IMO.

if you deny the existence of Global Warming or the harmful

Submitted by Rush Fan on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 11:16am.

effects of CO2, don't blame anchormen or the media. Blame the conservative Koch Brothers.

At least that is the opinion of former PBS (now independent) Los Angeles public television station KCET. In an article titled Money File: Koch Brothers and the Media, the article states:

The now high-profile billionaire brothers, Charles and David Koch, are not only major funders of conservative causes and candidates but also exert significant influence over media outlets and public opinion generators. [....]

However, the Koch brothers' influences in the media extend far beyond simple dinner parties. According to a report from Greenpeace, the Koch brothers have contributed millions of dollars over the past years to organizations that deny or downplay climate change.

"It's difficult to track these things. They aren't like campaign contributions in that they aren't obligated to report them," said Derek Cressman, the regional director of operations for the western states for Common Cause. "It's one of the more dangerous, nefarious things going on here. The Koch brothers have been very clever about funding surrogates to advocate their point of view. It would be one thing if you heard an oil executive saying greenhouse gases don't cause global warming, but hearing that from a 'think tank person' makes it sound more credible."

In another article titled Oil-Backed Republicans Seek Repeal of EPA CO2 Rules, it is Republicans, the Koch Brothers, and the oil and gas industry that contributed to Republicans, who "would block the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gases, a key priority for the agency under administrator Lisa P. Jackson."

Finally there is Prop 23 that was on the California ballot this past November. It attempted to roll back a law signed by RINO Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006. The Los Angeles Times wrote:

In 2006, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill [2006 Global Warming Solutions Act], aimed at rolling back the state's greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020. That bill, AB 32, has become the cornerstone of Schwarzenegger's legacy as he travels the world talking about the importance of environmental protection and reducing harmful pollution. This year, a coalition of business groups funded largely by money from out-of-state oil companies, spent millions trying to roll back the law. But the efforts were opposed by Schwarzenegger, environmental groups and California voters, who overwhelmingly rejected the ballot measure Tuesday.

KCET covered the Prop 23 debate by calling opponents of the Global Warming Solutions Act enemies. In an article titled Prop 23 Enemies Outspending Its Supporters it reported:

Proposition 23, which would overturn California's 2006 Global Warming Solutions Act, is being outspent nearly two to one by its environmentalist enemies. [...]

In addition to Valero, which operates refineries in Wilmington and Benicia, donors include Texas-based Tesoro Co. ($1.5 million) and Kansas-based Koch Industries ($1 million), which is also a major supporter of the tea party movement.

where did you dream this pile of malarky up. Conservatives funding climate change. Give your brains a shake.
If it wasn't for questioning actual climate scientists, like Dr. Tim Ball, and others we would be swimming in carbon dioxide regulations. Kock, and others didn't provide anything.Quit the make up stories. The truth of what or how the climate science fell apart is a well guarded secret. Someone blew the whistle on the Global Warming agenda. Who ever was that person or persons they deserve a medal. If it wasn't for them the Kyoto Agreement and the other after agreements would have been signed and we would be penalized with carbon trading. But someone knew within the Climate Science bunch, and it must have been a well up person who knew what was going on.
But the main contributors to supporting Climate Change were who pal? It certainly wasn't conservative legislators, or conservative political interests. Who pal, who, Al the Freakin Gore. And what exactly or who exactly does Al Gore, and David Suzuki, and Sierra Club types represent? It certainly isn't conservatism.
Al is a big L liberal with a high amount of BIG L working in his team. The whole climate change issue was never about environmentalism, it was all about social engineering in a science psuedo-name. Whereever you see the word environment in their story line, insert socialism.

Direct your anger at the media, in this instance, public television. We are on the same side, at least when it comes to the Global Warming fallacy.

Rush Fan

p.s. My posts are sometimes filled with sarcasm. It's my way of dealing with the banality and B.S. of liberals.

“Understand something about liberalism. They never stop until they get what they want, and when they get what they want, it's never enough. That's why it's a constant thing to have to oppose them. You can't join forces with them, you can't moderate them, you can't slow them down by joining them, you can't make them like you and have them change their agenda. They have to be stopped.” ~ Rush Limbaugh

DFL Don just won't go away

Submitted by Master-of-Disaster on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 1:18pm.

Minnesota, like most places I guess, is primarily a conservative state. Good, God fearing folks, mostly of German and Norwegian stock. Farmers mostly, when that meant something. The broke the land and farmed and grew the country. Yeah they were Democrat mostly, although the Republican Party was born just over in Ripon, Wisconsin. They believed in the little guy. Mining on the Iron Range was huge, seems to be making a comeback too if the environmentalist and government will let it. The people are self deprecating but solid, self reliant, and all in all a great place to live. That is except the liberal, loud squawking, in your face and pocket, Twin Cities government and welfare state enthusiasts like DFL Don. I couldn't stand him when we first moved to the cities. I would watch every story he did and it was sickening that he would always present it in a way that leaned so far left he almost tipped over. Even his story about the Red Bulls and getting a tattoo at age 107 or whatever it was. he still had to put on a double face, support the troops but not the mission! It wasn't just him but I think the editors, the writers, everyone over there at WCCO is so liberal biased that this is almost a nonstory. It hasn't changed a bit either so if more people are watching it just means that the Peter Principle may have run it's course with Don but WCCO is still a bastion of left wing demagoguery. You should be sorry that you are contributing to Global Warming Don, by opening your fat mouth again.

Climate Change to Climate Fraud?

Submitted by Less1leg on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 3:06pm.

I'm at a loss as to why our government legislators not demand massive legal actions into the granting of government money to study "climate change" . We had so many reports of IPCC, NASA, major international Universities detailing climate change. Then it all came crashing down one fine week showing how all these culpable groups conspired to deceive the public record. In fact fraud was done because these same people took grant money from the tax payer then in return submitted fraudulent reports, computer models, deliberately withheld studies that weren't in agreement or premise of Climate Change.
Our "leftists" can say what they will calling me names. But the record speaks for itself. A lot of material was altered to support climate change which in turn provided very generous contracts to create the debate now called Carbon taxes, and Green House Gas Emissions Standards.
With so many hands that were greased in the creation of global warming, climate change, and carbon credits. Our MSM fell for it hook line and sinker. They poured tons of money into the supporting Green.
But have you noticed that there is little real Green going on as promised by our progressive liberal side of the climate change debate. As energy cost rose faster than a speeding bullet, so few actual Green industries flocked to our ever Green --ing countrysides. What did happen though, monumental costs were being placed on our industrialization domesticly and they started leaving for locations where they could do business. It sure wasn't going to be here in North America. Is there climate change? Yes there is. But it certainly isn't being created solely by mankinds impact. We may screw up certain places at times, but on a total world scale, not in your lifetime.

Three points on the Don Shelby story

Submitted by nkviking75 on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 7:40pm.

1 )  How can anyone live in Minnesota and still believe in Man-Made Global Warming?

2)  In the broadcasting industry Shelby is widely known for popularizng the so-called Shelby knot, a simplified way to tie a tie.  Which makes him a knothead, I guess.

3)  Good catch, Scott Taylor!  You're a great American!

Only less than 3% of WORKING

Submitted by Giygas on Wed, 04/27/2011 - 6:04pm.

Only less than 3% of WORKING climate scientists do not believe that global warming is largely caused by human activities. The few scientists in that 3% minority tend to have weaker credentials and a smaller research history.

The late Stephen Schneider explained media balance on climate change in this video.
