Newsweek's Evan Thomas: Democrats Will Demagogue Paul Ryan All the Way to Reelection

Representative Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) predicted last Sunday on Fox News that Democrats were going to demagogue him and his historic 2012 budget proposal in order to assist their reelection chances next year.

On Friday's "Inside Washington," Newsweek's Evan Thomas not only agreed with Ryan, but also said, "The Democrats will now accuse the Republicans – it’s an old page in their playbook – of throwing Granny in the snow" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

EVAN THOMAS, NEWSWEEK: [Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-N.Y.)] is apt to be more strident about the big issue, the budget and the debt. And what I fear is going on here is the Democrats are just going to demagogue their way to reelection in 2012 for Obama because of what Ryan did, because of what we talked about. He did the brave thing with entitlements.

Evan Thomas 1.pngThe Democrats will now accuse the Republicans – it’s an old page in their playbook – will accuse the Republicans, accuse the Republicans of throwing Granny in the snow. That’s a pretty good tactic, and she’s the kind of person [now that she's been appointed Democratic National Committee chair] that’ll carry it out.

When Charles Krauthammer got his chance to speak, he not only agreed but also put a finer point on it:

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: The DNC right now is saying that the Ryan plan is going to kill Granny. Throwing her in the snow is too, is, is, is, it gives too much credit to the Ryan plan. This is going to be one of the most demagogic campaigns we have ever seen. I think it’s incredibly irresponsible, but I think it might actually work. I think that if you are a Democrat, you want to get reelected in 2012 as Obama does, I, I will bet he will sit back and ride the anti-Ryan demagoguery all the way into reelection.

If Thomas and Krauthammer agree, I guess it's official.

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 7:14pm.

For the first time in my adult life, I am ashamed of my country.

I think more people might be willing to make some sacrifices for the future, but liberals keep telling them that they don't need to; it's just the mean Republicans wanting to take all their goodies and give them to their rich friends instead.

The CBO says this economy is unsustainable beyond 2037.

But Democrats don't care.  They can't see any farther down the road than November 2012.

And after that, they will still claim that we can survive without pain, simply by raising taxes on the wealthy.

The more the Dems attack, the more exposure Ryan will receive. It will make him a stronger opponent and formidable in the future. It's politics. Time will tell.

Where are our 2012 POTUS hopefuls backing up Ryan?

Submitted by lsudolemite on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 7:49pm.

Obama's given us enough ammo in his first 2 years alone to arm a Third World country. If nobody in the GOP field is willing to use it, then Krauthammer will be right. It's going to take a candidate of profound political courage and communication skills to counter the media onslaught, and outside of Palin I don't know anyone else who comes close.

lsudolemite,

I think Tim Pawlenty has already come out in favor of it.

You may be right, I hadn't heard anything about Pawlenty endorsing it.

Every time I hear this I will debunk it with the facts. That is what we all should do. And I hope people are wiser these days than they were in the past and understand what is at stake here. It is time for these people to put together their own plan or be called on their lies.

Did Evan Thomas suffer a stroke recently? He's been sounding pretty reasonable for a few months now. If he keeps this up, the Democrats will make a voodoo doll out of him. :-)

I followed him closely through the health care debate, and yeah after chaning is predictions about 100 times he turned out to be right.

The question I have is he better at reading what politicians will do or better at reading what the american public will do?

I'd like to thank Hollywood for renewing my interest in reading.

Charles misses the point.

Submitted by Tenebrous on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 9:52pm.

Let the Democrats demogauge. Who really cares? Predicting that was like predicting if a rock will fall if you drop it from a tower. But I say this -- if they do keep it up, then they only increase the rancor and the violence and set the stage for civil war. They've already caused one civil war in America, but I guess that's not enough for them. They want to cause two.

Paul Ryan said it himself

Submitted by Blonde on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 10:22pm.

"The democrats are going to lie and demogogue this, just wait".

It's the only thing they can do. Because they don't have any ideas of their own, just borrow some more money to spend on crap we neither want nor need.

Paul Ryan is ready and waiting. Love that guy.

Agreed

Submitted by GregE on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 10:54pm.

They bring out the granny playbook because it's the entire reason for the programs they put in place - power and control. Any reduction in programs is reduction in citizenry dependency, which in turn is a reduction in the number of votes they pull only for the reason of a dependent citizen scared to death to lose what they've become accustomed to having provided to them. The liberal mind is dangerous to our Constitution and has been tearing it down for 120 years.

These boobs claim to want to reduce our debt, yet if you touch anything, they throw a fit like a little kid. They don't care about debt. If there is a way it can benefit them politically, they want more of it. What they are too stupid to realize is, when the nation begins the hard slide down the icy slope, toward the freezing water, they will drown just as the rest of us.

Who knows, perhaps they're actually ok with that too.

The plan

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 10:23pm.

1. Debunk every liberal lie.
2. Constantly harass your elected officals to take action.
3. Debunk every RINO
4.Do not allow the MSM to set the tone of the debate
If we do these things we can win and stop all this paramoron activity from the left. As my granddad used to say" when you get in a fight, swing to kill the man and never step back to admire your work until you read his obituary."

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".

Well, two of my three are Allen West and Marco Rubio....so basically I send them a weekly "way to go" note.

The third one, Bill Nelson, isn't worth my time right now, but I've identified the man who I shall throw my support behind in the effort to unseat him.

But you're correct....we have to keep the hammer down.

The counter to BO is trying to use Ryan to getting re-elected

Submitted by hbnolikeee on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 11:14pm.

is really right in front of us. Get Ryan to run for President in 2012. He is smarter than BO and would pound him in debate. And further, discussion of the real mechanisms of Ryan's plan get forced to the surface and the media will have little choice but to air these mechanisms.

Charles Krauthammer has

Submitted by Boil It Down on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 11:36pm.

Charles Krauthammer has apparently lost faith in the majority of Americans to discriminate between the dishonesty of the politicians and the reality of our fiscal crisis. Even with the crazed apocalyptic rantings of the Democrats, too many speak in their favor. The "yeah, cut the budget, but leave my entitlement alone" mentality has infected a large part of the population making them open to budget cut opposition. Even the wildest and most obvious lies against Ryan's proposals don't seem to be recognized as a sign of their unworthiness to hold office.

I'm afraid I've lost some of my faith too and I'm thinking things might have to get even worse for more people realize some pretty drastic fiscal house cleaning needs to be done in our Federal Government. This has made me redouble my efforts to get the word out about how dishonest and totally untrustworthy our politicians and the media have been.

I am a fan of Charles, but most of this old guard is out of touch, this aint the 80's. And, By God, we are going to get the fed out of our lives, we are going to protect our Boarders, and we are going to make America for front of wealth.

Libtard want to take all the profits from the wealthy? To create more poor I suppose.

Please Libtard Nation,,, Please tell me when your satisfied with my liberties. Will it be possible to take care of all my NEW business with the Fed in a single week. So we can plan our vacation around it?
