Ed Schultz on Libya: 'Given That Americans Died on That 747 Over Lockerbie, I’m All for This Mission'
The perpetually anti-war Ed Schultz took his seat behind the desk at MSNBC studios Monday with the expressed mission of selling Barack Obama's air assault on Libya to his viewers.
So passionate was the "Ed Show" host in supporting the President he several times showed video footage of downed Pan Am flight 103 while claiming that Moammar Gaddafi was responsible thereby justifying an attack on him over 22 years later (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):
ED SCHULTZ: President Obama has decided on a more focused, realistic approach. He’s trying to give the rebels who want democracy a fighting chance at just that, and trying to stop Gaddafi, this is the human thing to do, from slaughtering his own people. Now aside from all the reasons for this mission, you will never convince me that Gaddafi didn’t have a hand in the Lockerbie bombing. You’ll never convince me that Gaddafi hasn’t supplied resources to terrorists. Given the fact that Americans died on that 747 over Lockerbie, I’m all for this mission. I think the President of the United States Barack Obama deserves the benefit of the doubt and our support.
Interesting defense. Readers are reminded that Pan Am 103 was downed in December 1988. That's a reason for going after Gaddafi now?
As for "slaughtering his own people" and supplying "resources to terrorists," the same was true of Saddam Hussein.
That hasn't stopped Schultz from repeatedly claiming that wasn't enough of a reason to invade 18 months after 9/11. Why would these issues support attacks on Libya if they didn't justify an Iraqi invasion eight years ago?
Alas, when MSNBCers like Schultz are defending politicians they support, facts, reason, and any past positions previously expressed mysteriously become irrelevant:
SCHULTZ: As a country we really don’t have much of a stomach for this right now, and a lot of us are torn because of what all of our needs are here at home. But remember, and this needs to be pointed out: there have been no lies told; no fear games have been played on the American people; intelligence hasn’t been cooked, and; there truly is a coalition of the willing.
"There have been no lies told."
I guess Schultz missed this report from Time magazine Monday:
As it turns out, Gaddafi hasn't done enough to justify humanitarian intervention—despite their rhetoric to the contrary, the administration and human rights organizations admit that reports of potential war crimes remain unconfirmed. Instead, interviews with senior administration officials show that the rehabilitators convinced Obama to go to war not just to prevent atrocities Gaddafi might (or might not) commit but also to bolster America's ability to intervene elsewhere in the future.
That isn't necessarily a bad thing. The ability for the U.S. to muster international force to prevent thugs from killing innocent people is important. But the president and some of his advisers are so eager to rehabilitate the idea of preventive intervention that they're exaggerating the violence they say they are intervening to prevent in Libya. “The effort to shoe-horn this into an imminent genocide model is strained,” says one senior administration official. That's dangerous. Americans deserve an honest explanation when their leaders take them to war.
Well, apart from not getting it from Obama, they're certainly not going to get it from a shill like Schultz.
As for the "coalition of the willing," this is another falsehood the media have been shoving down Americans' throats since Friday. As Fox reported Monday, President Bush had double the partners entering Iraq as Obama has on this Libya mission.
But Schultz was on a roll, and he certainly wasn't going to let the truth interfere with his mission:
SCHULTZ: I have always believed that Gaddafi was a terrorist. Let’s look at the tape again of flight Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Do you need any more evidence? Has Gaddafi ever proven his innocence? […]
I’m with the President on this one, and I think if it is defined the way he says it is, limited in scope, this actually could be a situation where we don’t hear from Gaddafi for a long, long time.
Maybe so, but we haven't heard from Saddam Hussein for many years. I doubt Schultz sees that as a justification for that war.
In fairness to Schultz, he did invite on guests Monday evening that were opposed to this move by Obama, in particular Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Oh.) who reiterated his claim from earlier in the day that this could actually be an impeachable offense by the President.
However, Schultz was resolute in his support even doing a segment later in the program wherein he rationalized the financial cost of the mission because it's a pittance of what we're spending in Iraq and Afghanistan. This of course assumed our role ends as quickly as Obama and Schultz believe it will.
Add it all up, and it sure was interesting watching this devout anti-war liberal sell this military action to his devout, anti-war, liberal viewers.
Appears to have worked, for his poll question Monday was, "Do you support military action against Libya?" At press time, almost 2/3 of respondents had said, "Yes."
Ed should be very proud of bringing that many like-minded people over to his new way of thinking.

Ed, Ed... Ed. Do you *really* want to go there? Do you *really* want to defend this? Your last shred of credibility was strangled to make room for Liberals like Obama long ago. Don't keep pushing this charade on us all. Quit now, while you still can. Go home. Go to your cabin. Go fishing. Forget about the world. It's too late for you. It's all over. I'm confused, wasn't it Obama's administration that set the stage for the Lockerbe bomber to be released on so called humanitarian grounds that we found out later was an elaborate ruse? Where was Schultz's outrage at the Obama Administration's incompetence at best or possible collusion at worst? That's a strike out if your sole reason is PanAm 103 with this administration. The fact that Schultz has to walk out on thin ice to rationalize Obama's video game war means they are now desperately grasping at straws because they realize no one is buying the pathetic justification offered to engage in an act of war against another nation state.
What's interesting here is the reaction of the Russians and Chinese to preparing the ground for the No-Fly zone, neither of these two military powers are known for their naivete when it comes to military action. This suggests they while publicly stating for world consumption they only agreed to a No-Fly Zone but not creating the conditions for one to exist, BUT privately knew and gave tacit approval of the whole package to be implimented.
Instead, interviews with senior administration officials show that the rehabilitators convinced Obama to go to war not just to prevent atrocities Gaddafi might (or might not) commit but also to bolster America's ability to intervene elsewhere in the future.
Sounds like Obama has some more video game war drama in mind.

And shameless. It's Obama, so it's all good. Nothing but propaganda from MessNBC and the idiot shill Schultz. For sure, I think it's justified to try and oust the terrorist Gaddafi, but the effort thus far is leaderless and unfocused. That's as opposed to Bush, who was clear about the mission in Iraq, and Saddam was history. But you'll never hear any of that from the likes of a moron kissass hypocrite like Schultz and his ilk.Does he know that Al-Qaeda is

Does he know that Al-Qaeda is supporting the rebel cause? Why are we fighting for them? Why are we even in Libya, and not in any other country, like Bahrain? Yes, Gaddafi is a horrible murderer, who should be taken out with a sniper bullet 200 meters away, but as Savage said today: "the Devil you know is better than the Devil you don't know." Who are these rebels and why are we supporting them without a single bit of knowledge of what they stand for? (And in no way, am I defending Gaddafi's slaughtering of his own people, of course.) Meanwhile the President is in Rio playing soccer with his family on the beach. Obama is perhaps the worst leader in American history; I doubt HE even knows what is going on with his own administration. So it's all because of Lockerbie that Obama went after Ghaddafy; where the hell did this rationale come from. I haven't heard one Administration representative mention this, yet, O'Reilly was off spewing this nonsense with Kuscinich last night. Give me a break; if we gave two craps about the lives we lost in Locerbie, Tripoli would be a pile of sand years ago. More to the point, if we're so concerned about the loss of lives in Tripoli, what about Yemen, Bahrain and the other hot spots over there; when are we going to create their "no-fly zones"? Here's a flash for us; this entire unrest is being spurred by years of abuse on the part of Shites and Sunnis; it's being instigated by the likes of the Mullahs in Iran. We don't like it? Fine, then go after them. We tolerated their abuse to their people last year; we tolerated China's abuse to their people decades ago; what the hell are we doing in Libya?Yep. Schultz and O'Reiily are in agreement

To say that I am no fan of Dennis Kucinich would be an gross understatement, but I must admit last night it was he and not O'Reilly who sounded like a Constitutionalist.
O'Reilly insisted that avenging Pan Am 103 (a 1988 terrorist attack) was justification enough for Obama to intervene in Libya (and exactly to what extent remains undetermined).
Kucinich rightly asserted that whatever the reason Obama has for intervening, he violated the Constitution by not coming to the Congress first. If Obama was also seeking to avenge Pan Am 103, he needed to raise that with the Congress. The Congressman even suggested that Obama's action may be an impeachable offense. Our government consulted the members of the UNSC, but not the Congress.
I've got to say that no matter how distasteful I find Kucinich's far left politics, he's right on the Constitutionality question.
As of this morning, we've launched over 120 cruise missiles and lost an F-15E (Thankfully, the crew ejected safely and was recovered, probably by a Marine TRAP mission off the Kearsarge). We've been told that at some unspecified point under some unspecified conditions, the leading role of Operation Odesey Dawn will be handed over to some unnamed country. The President said that allied airpower is preventing a massacre of rebels and innocent Libyans, but back in February he declared that "Qaddafi must go."
So, what is the mission?

The Hill is reporting today that the White House is now describing the mission as providing the Libyan people with a chance to install democracy in Libya. Friday it was about No-Fly Zones.
Today it's about regime change and the inherent partner mission: nation building. What happened to the MSM that blasted Bush all these years for Iraq? Do we even know what political factions make up the Libyan rebels?
Don't look now, but Obama appears to have eyes bigger than his stomach -- his Administration claims that it will hand over the leadership of this operation to some country at some undefined point in the future. Maybe he thinks this averts getting bogged down in nation building.
But like Colin Powell once noted, it's Pottery Barn rules: You break it -- you own it.
Our President is overdue for making a national address to tell us WTF is going on. And we're still in Iraq for the foreseeable future.

Wow, poor Ed, what a stupid reasoning for more War. Lets be honest, while he makes excuses for Obama we need to look at some facts when Ed screams we are protecting innocent Libyan Civilians. 1. These Civilians have taken up arms and are fighting against a Government thus are now combatants and no longer innocent civilians. 2 His comparison that Iraq was wrong and Lybia is wrong because we are supporting protecting Civilians, however he failed to mention that Saddam murdered over a million of his own Civilians with purges and Gas attacks against the Kurds. 3, Like it or not, we agreed to leave Qaddafi alone after he announced he was dismantling his WMD programs. 4. Although I disagreed with Bush going into Iraq, he at least consulted Congress and got it's approval to take action against Iraq, while Obama never even mentioned it to congress that he was going to attack Lybia. 5. The very people we are defending in Lybia are mostly members, and have admitted so are affiliated with Alquada, a terrorist group that has sworn that the USA is and enemy and has declared War on us. 6. Ed claims that there will be no boots on the ground, yet we have sent in along with the fleet several Assault Ships loaded with Marines and army combat personnel for ground operations, and I'm pretty sure they were not sent to go in with the fleet just for a joy ride. So in conclusion, what the heck is really different with what Obama is doing and what Bush did ?.'Chickenhawk' name-caller Ed Schulz's son is a golfer!

http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com/2007/09/liberal-talk-radio-ed-schultz...
An argument between a GOP supporter and liberal talk radio host Ed Schultz over the Iraq war actually turned physical, according to the Forum of Fargo, North Dakota.
Nagle, who was visiting relatives in the area, said his cousin introduced him to Schultz Saturday night. She wrongly thought Schultz was still a Republican, as he was earlier in his radio broadcasting career.
Nagle, who was with his fiancee Saturday, said he and Schultz had a civil discussion for about 10 minutes and that Schultz didn’t appear uncomfortable. The conversation went sour when Nagle said he respects Joe Lieberman, the Independent Democratic senator from Connecticut known for supporting the Iraq war.
Nagle said Schultz said he doesn’t like Lieberman, and then commented that if Nagle felt so strongly about the war, his family should go over and fight in it.
The daughter of Nagle’s fiancee serves in the Army and may soon go to Iraq.
His fiancee’s son-in-law has served in Iraq. “It was at that time that Mr. Schultz completely lost control, in my opinion,” Nagle said. “He became enraged, and then our interactions became far less civil.”

If I hear one more moron say that Bush didn't have a coalition for Afghanistan and Iraq, I'll explode. Where the hell have these people been? Bush spent months talking to Congress and other members of the UN and NATO before he acted. The MSM would have skewered him had he done otherwise; and they still weren't satisfied. This administration has shown no leadership in this effort, has been pulled kicking and screaming to the front, and now is acting like it was they who formed the coalition versus Sarkozy and Cameron of France and the UK. And while I'm venting, where the hell are the media on the atrocities being reported by the American soldiers in Afghanistan; why has that story been kept under wraps for months. When Abu Ghraib occurred, the press skewered the Bush Administration; yet, here we are with the soldiers in custody, trials being held, and not one word emanated from the American press; we had to wait for photos from Der Spiegal.
