Andrew Sullivan: 'I Don't Know Why Anybody Voted for Obama in the Primaries - It's a Clintonian Mess'

By Noel Sheppard | March 20, 2011 | 20:02

The far-left in America are having a collective conniption fit over President Obama's decision to attack Libya.

Included in the wolf pack is the Atlantic magazine's Andrew Sullivan who despite his preposterous claims of being a conservative appeared on "The Chris Matthews Show" this weekend and said, "I don’t know why anybody voted for Obama in the primaries...[now] we have this politicized Clintonian mess" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Was the President wrong initially to say Gaddafi must go, getting in so far ahead of everybody?

ANDREW SULLIVAN, THE ATLANTIC: Well, I don’t think it’s wrong for a President of the United States to issue an opinion about some madman like Gaddafi. I do think that the American public might have been consulted before the United States goes to war. I mean, we now got, you know, the President tells people after the fact? I mean, you know, we go into a Middle Eastern country, we don’t know the consequences, it’s been hatched by Hillary and McCain. I mean, what could go wrong?

[Laughter]

SULLIVAN: I mean, when you think about it. And I think it, I’m just, I’m just, I don’t know why anybody voted for Obama in the primaries. I mean this is a, this, this initiative, this, this, this no-fly zone, this war essentially, is, is a Hillary-McCain concept.

A few minutes later, when the discussion changed to whether or not Obama will push for Social Security reform, Sullivan said he didn’t think so, and continued with this same theme:

SULLIVAN: Look, we, people who voted for this guy wanted him to let the old politics go.

MATTHEWS: Transformational president.

SULLIVAN: Wanted him to actually tell us the truth about this stuff and to do the right thing. And that was the appeal of Obama. And two years later, we have this politicized Clintonian mess.

Actually, that wasn't the appeal of Obama. That was the lie that he and his media minions including Sullivan dishonestly sold to the American people.

If there had been any truth in reporting after the junior senator from Illinois tossed his name into the ring in February 2007, he wouldn't have had a prayer against Hillary.

But people like Sullivan bought into the hope and change dream the Obama campaign created and assisted him in pulling the wool over the eyes of enough registered Democrats to beat someone with far more qualifications.

Now that the curtain is being pulled back to expose who and what the wizard is, people like Sullivan are so disappointed they feel they need to point fingers at him.

However, if they had acted like journalists rather than sycophantic teenyboppers, maybe we'd have someone in the White House right now better suited to handle the many crises facing the nation.

It's all well and good that Sullivan is realizing he was duped and is willing to admit it, but the next more important step is to apologize to the American people for being a part of the scam.

Don't hold your breath on that one.

The Trig Birther.

Submitted by The Vet on Sun, 03/20/2011 - 8:19pm.

Doesn't this nut still think Trig is not Sarah Palins son?

The Trig Birther: I do think that the American public might have been consulted before the United States...

Actually, the framers of the Constitution deliberately set our government up so that the majority (a democracy) will not have to be consulted prior to taking any actions. We elect people to represent us and then hope they will do what they actually say. And if not, in 2, 4, or 6 years we will elect someone else. Or did I get it wrong?

Vet,

Not wrong there at all. Indeed, I will take it one step farther. In some circumstances, the will of that majority is absolutely to be contradicted by the votes of the representatives.

Like say, gun bans for instance, or mandates on a particular religion. Some things are simply beyond the will of a majority and our form of government tasks legislators, alongside other governmental officials, with checking the will of the majority when those situations arise.

As hard as the Founders tried, it was, and remains, impossible to totally remove such a power from, sometimes, resting in but one person's hands. (Which is why they put such strict qualifications on that position)

One thing is for sure, the will of the majority left unchecked results in things like slavery, despotism and destruction. The will of a majority cannot be ignored, but neither can it be relied upon as a panacea. Tremendous wisdom existed in the minds of our Framers, for they considered  and wrote down (Ala Blackstone) the map through -with Liberty being the buried treasure where x marks the spot.

We have our Constitution, we must restore our constitution to match it.

Excellent points.

I came across a comment in a book about Viet Nam, "Charlie Company - What Viet Nam Did To Us",  published in 1983, that seems to have been an omen in defining what the U.S. form of government has become today:

"-- it hardened his own view, widely held on the American right, that the United States was a republic deteriorating into a democracy governed by majority whim rather than the wisdom and the conscience of its best men."

'Majority whim'.

That, to me, is a perfect descriptor of the sad, but colossal phenomenon, known as Obama.

Strange

Submitted by Truestar on Sun, 03/20/2011 - 8:30pm.

Sullivan is a very strange man. How can anyone who calls himself a conservative have voted for Obama? It's difficult to believe that a person of his intellect could be so extremely naive, and then start whining like a brat that Obama wasn't the savior.

The Left still won't abandon

Submitted by shannon76 on Sun, 03/20/2011 - 8:44pm.

The Left still won't abandon Obama over this Libya situation, but it's possible those wishy-washy undecideds who still 'approve' of Obama's performance after the last two years will start to wonder about him now. The big battle in the LSM will be over whether to call this a 'war' or a brief military operation involving a no-fly zone.

Panama Tingles claims Obama

Submitted by Ashrak on Sun, 03/20/2011 - 8:55pm.

Panama Tingles claims Obama was out in front of everybody?

It's the malaria again.

Obama makes a decision, and it is Hillary and McCain's fault?

For crying out loud. The "can't blame Obama for anything" gene took over there, huh?

I like this piece but I think it errs on pointing the finger at Obama. There is some admission coming out, to be sure, but it has not yet gotten to pointing at Obama yet.

That is coming though, it has always been coming, because Obama has ben lying all along and media could only cover for him until shortly after election when the time arrives that Obama went from being enabled to vote Present to being the decider.

It is about to get really ugly in the media and I offer Obama will experience more negative press in the next 18 months, on the brutality scale, than Bush got in 8 years. Obama done pissed of those who buy ink by the barrel and that is going to be added to a whole lot of bandwith.

No, I wouldn;t hold my breath, hey I smoke, but Obama annihilation in the press is close at hand. Bet on it.

He doesn't know why anyone voted for him?

Uhhh... Maybe it's because you buffoons in the MSM were so enamored with the Exalted One, you spent every waking moment making sure you puffed him up to near deity status. You know, during the entire campaign season where no one was allowed to go more than 60 seconds without being reminded of the virtues of the Mighty Bringer of Hope and Change.

Whoopsie!!!

"I had a dream, that this President . . ." -- Andrew Sullivan

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 03/21/2011 - 11:06am.

Sullivan and the rest of the MSM galvanized in voters' minds the promise of "Hope & Change" that candidate Obama offered.

Now, after two years of fouled-up, deficit-growing legislation and Presidential timidity on the international scene, Sullivan is turning on him, as is Michael Moore and Louis Farrakhan,

Gee, if an inexperienced President relies on advisers of former Bill Clinton and appoints Hillary Clinton as SecState, ya think the outcome might just look like toothless, costly Clinton policy?

The Left had high hopes on this President, but now they are vocally disappointed and bewildered on his failure to live up to the image they crafted for him.

lesson from Viet Nam: You fight to win not some middle ground

Submitted by MidAmerica on Sun, 03/20/2011 - 8:58pm.

The descent into Carters Presidency continues for obama. This adventure into Libya may be obama's Iranian situation. A situation he can't get himself out of and alienates everyone on both sides of the political spectrum. If obama kills Gaddafi obama will become a hated man in the Third World. If Gaddafi lives and is not driven from power then Libya may become a divided country engaged in a civil war which might kill more Libyans than if Gaddafi had been allowed to regain control of all of Libya.

sounds more like he has a buyer's remorse that would have directed him instead towards Kucinich. If you're going to do an airstrike, you'd like to have some element of surprise if your goal is to knock out air defense targets.

The Left now move into

Submitted by Van Halen on Sun, 03/20/2011 - 10:16pm.

The Left now move into hyperdrive to pin the war on Hillary/McCain. Somehow, Obama is innocent of this entire thing. Sorry, ain't gonna happen. This is Obama's war. He's a warmonger. He's spending money we don't have on a war we don't need against people we don't have any problem with any more. He's not even in the country to lead, instead having flown off to Brazil to award Soros-dominated Petrobas an oil rig contract so they can drill in the gulf and sell the oil to us. Oil we're forbidden to drill for ourselves and oil which we're not supposed to be using anyway due to all the effort on 'green' energy. And don't even get me started about the economy...

You Poured the Kool-Aid and You Drank the Kool-Aid

Submitted by clayusmcret on Mon, 03/21/2011 - 6:58am.

Everything about Barack Hussein Barry Sotero Obama, in the primaries of 2007, screamed inexperience, biographic cover-up and hard core liberal. Yet supposedly educated people bought into the hype an equally hard core media were pushing. Andrew, you have no justification for your buy-into obama's BS. In fact, you and your kind are to blame for the mess we're in today. You were publicly content with no school records, no passport records, no transcripts, no history of collegiate writing, no history. You helped pour the very kool-aid you now complain that you and others drank. 2009-2010 proved Hope&Change meant Socialism.
