NYT Hit Piece on Glenn Beck: Fox May Not Renew His Contract

By Noel Sheppard | March 07, 2011 | 00:25

Noel Sheppard's picture

It's certainly not surprising that the New York Times would publish a hit piece on Glenn Beck, but coming hours after CNN's Howard Kurtz spent almost ten minutes bashing the Fox News commentator makes me smell a rat.

Add to this the increased pressure Beck has come up against from MSNBC personalities since Keith Olbermann surprisingly left America's most liberal television news network in January, and one has to wonder what Times author David Carr had in mind with his Monday piece "The Fading Power of Beck’s Alarms":

Since last August, when he summoned more than 100,000 followers to the Washington mall for the “Restoring Honor” rally, Mr. Beck has lost over a third of his audience on Fox — a greater percentage drop than other hosts at Fox. True, he fell from the great heights of the health care debate in January 2010, but there has been worrisome erosion — more than one million viewers — especially in the younger demographic.

He still has numbers that just about any cable news host would envy and, with about two million viewers a night, outdraws all his competition combined. But the erosion is significant enough that Fox News officials are willing to say — anonymously, of course; they don’t want to be identified as criticizing the talent — that they are looking at the end of his contract in December and contemplating life without Mr. Beck.

On Thursday, Beck garnered almost two million total viewers. Not only is that more than his combined "competition" on CNN, HLN, and MSNBC, it is more than any show on those networks gets at any time of the day.

Frankly, no one is even close.

Within his own network, Beck's numbers are consistently higher than Shepard Smith's and Greta Van Susteren's while typically being on par with Bret Baier's and Sean Hannity's. Only Bill O'Reilly consistently bests Beck.

Is that the kind of commentator you want to get rid of?

Consider, too, that Beck and O'Reilly seem to have a solid working relationship with the former a frequent program guest of the latter and the duo going on a nationwide tour last year. Clearly, Fox's number one star shows no concern for his colleague across the hall.

For his part, Carr offered not one named source inside or outside of the Fox organization claiming the top-rated cable news network is even considering dumping one of its top-rated stars. Instead, Carr offered innuendo:

What had been a fast and loose assault on all things liberal has grown darker and less entertaining, especially with the growing revolution in the Middle East, a phenomenon Mr. Beck sees as something of a beginning to some kind of end. He’s often alone in the studio with his chalkboards and obscure factoids, a setting that reminds me of an undergrad seminar on macroeconomics with an around-the-bend professor I didn’t particularly enjoy. [...]

Part of Mr. Beck’s appeal is that he seems as if he is about to lose his marbles. But recently, he acts like he’s a little tired of the game. He can still draw a huge crowd, but he looks lonely in that studio all by himself.

As NewsBusters has been reporting for weeks, many MSNBCers - including Beck's competition at 5:00 PM Chris Matthews - have been aggressively attacking him since Olbermann's departure.

In a period from late January to early February, the "Hardball" host bashed Beck six nights in a row. Matthews went after him twice last week.

Compounding the intrigue, as NewsBusters reported Sunday, CNN's Howard Kurtz did an almost ten minute segment on "Reliable Sources" bashing the Fox News star with the help of conservatives David Frum and Jennifer Rubin.

Kurtz teased at the top of the show, "Glenn Beck is drawing sharp criticism these days from the right. Some conservative commentators speaking out against the Fox News star, saying he's hurting their cause, which raises the question, has Beck finally gone too far?"

This coming hours before the Times published a lengthy hit piece on Beck has to make you wonder if the liberal media have finally had enough of him and are beginning to mount a full-scale assault to get Fox to not renew his contract.

As we learned from last year's JournoList scandal, nothing is beyond these people.

Beck seems to be doing quite well to me

Submitted by shawn. on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 12:38am.

I'm not a big fan of Beck. Not because I disagree with him, but because I just can't get into his show, however why would anyone consider getting rid of someone that makes them so much money that is not named Charlie Sheen?

I do not watch him every day. To be honest, that would be way too much bummer news for me to take.  But I do find the way he is able to connect various groups and people to one another facinating as well as fightening at times.

No way FOX is going to get rid of him.  And it is clear that some of what he puts forth is true. He would not such a focus point for liberal hate if they were not concerned about the information he gives to his viewers.  Let's face it, they have to destroy him.

After watching too much Beck

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 9:26am.

After watching too much Beck I'm always left thinking "What's the point?" because it seems so bleak.  Hell the truth hurts, I guess but I would still like to see him have more positive shows where he highlights people (maybe even a neighbor down the street) who takes on some piece of leftwing insanity and came out victorious.

I know he thinks he's presenting hope in the face of the opposition, and in a way he does (he definitely made me think I wasn't all alone) but he needs more substantive content to show how this leftwing social decomposition can be defeated in ways other than the ballot box.

I have the same impression Bob K. But with this all out assault on Beck one has to wonder: is he completely right? If that is the case then we do have a huge problem within our midst and Beck is showing us plainly what that problem is.

I watch and listen to Beck frequently, but lately he sounds as if he's just waiting for the "end of days." That's pretty depressing to listen to constantly, regardless of whether or not he's right.

Some days, it just seems depressing to watch Beck, and I'd rather stick my head in the sand. HOWEVER, now that there's a concerted effort by the Professional Left to smear Beck and get him removed from Fox, I'll just counter it in my own way- BY WATCHING HIM EVERY DAY!

Even though JOURN0LIST supposedly doesn't exist any longer, it is obvious that Media Matters or Think Progress coordinates a strategy to smear Conservatives and disseminates that strategy across a variety of media platforms- NY Times, MSNBC, HuffPo, the alphabet media, etc.

I hate to tell the Progressives, but we've wised up. The Emperor has no clothes, no matter how hard you try to tell us that his raiment is the grandest ever seen. Cue Danny Kaye!

Submitted by Van Halen on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 1:08am.

Love Beck. He, Palin, Bachmann, a few others, were instrumental in getting the Right their 800+ seat victory last November. Additionally, he's done a great job exposing Soros, the czars, and a host of Obama's dirty little secrets. He preaches a positive can-do message unlike the Left and he encourages everyone to read and learn their American history. Which makes the Left sick.

Remember when the Left told us Beck wouldn't draw a crowd in DC? Remember when Beck drew hundreds of thousands, forcing the Left to put their best on parade down there and failing miserably? That's another reason the Left hate Beck so much. He's successful against them. So he must be stopped.

I like Beck okay...I agree with him much, but not all of the time, and I think his intentions are good ones...It's his delivery that I sometimes have an issue with. He can be over the top, and I do think he can go overboard sometimes with the religious aspects of what he's discussing, but overall I think he's usually on target.

The timing of Kurtz's and the NYT's apparent tag team bashings of Beck could well be coordinated, and may be the beginning of more Beck bashing to come from the MSM...As Noel said, "...nothing is beyond these people."

What is the NYT really up to

Submitted by Van Halen on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 1:39am.

What is the NYT really up to here? Why would they drop this out there if they had no evidence to back it up? This is so far out there that it's stunning. Up to this point I haven't heard as much of a whisper of a problem with Beck and Fox News. All I've heard or seen is his spectacular money-making ratings. With Olbermann, we were pretty much surprised every day that he was actually still on the air so when he was finally fired, it was no real big surprise. His ratings were nothing compared to the competition and his baggage was well known.

This isn't the typical NYT Liberal lie. This is a big one that will get their Lefty base crazed with anticipation of Beck's imminent firing. And if it doesn't happen, will the NYT be roasted by their Lefty fans for having baited them with obvious nonsense?

Right - the puzzle pieces

Submitted by amyshulk on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 10:10am.

Right - the puzzle pieces form a pattern. After Tuscan, the left put pressure on Ailes to moderate his "talent" and shortly after declared victory - except for with Beck. Did I notice a difference in Baier, Kelly, O'Reilly, Hannity, or Greta? Nope. But they said it and in the msm, if they say it, it is.

They said over and over that Beck lies, and showing NO proof, convinced the left and the surface thinkers. So it's no wonder they believe they think they still control the narrative/get to frame the news. With a large portion of the electorate, they still do.

This is just more of the same - take info {loss of viewers over his high} and because their goal is to remove his influence, spin this as a what could happen if this road is followed. Actually, they just took what Beck does - takes facts and connects them to events/history, to say where you *MIGHT* end up. Where they screw up? Stating supposition as fact.

Roger Ailes is not a fool who would walk away from Beck's rating juggurnaut day in day out, not to mention delivering / holding Conservative / Independent viewers for the rest of the Prime Time lineup.

If anyone has to worry about declining audience, it is NYT which is in perpetual subscriber declines.

The Almighty NYT Deems It So

Submitted by Boil It Down on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 2:33am.

Certainly if the unquestioned integrity of the NYT backs up claims of Beck's departure from Fox even without further corroboration, it will surely come to pass. I'm sure there are many on the NYT staff who think this way. I have a feeling, however, that this little dig at Beck will backfire on them, and inspire folks to bolster Beck's ratings. The nature of NYT's staff and contributors will never allow them to hide their extreme bias.

Beck's show has super viewership in the coveted (I don't know why it's coveted) 25 - 54 age range. More than double his leading competitor Tingles. therefore this statement, "...there has been worrisome erosion — more than one million viewers — especially in the younger demographic." puzzles me.

Beck consistantly draws in total audience at 5:00 what Hannity draws at 9:00. Erosion? Huh?!?!

What would make more sense is MSNBC not renewing Tingles' contract who is on 2 hours a day and usually has the lowest viewership show of any on MSNBC.

See for yourself the 25-54 viewership:

This is just the best shot

Submitted by Miss_Me_Yet on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 9:24am.

This is just the best shot Axelrod and the Obama 2012 reelection machine up there in Chicago could muster.

This week " Glenn Beck's Ratings Take a Dive ". Next week  " The Leader of the Republican Party, Glenn Beck is Losing Independents in Droves ".

Come on America. Last time, high on his own stink, Obama actually summoned the left wing bomb thrower press's best , though not so brightest, you remember, to the White House for a personal meet & greet secret strategy session with himself playing host.

It was his lame personally concocted attempt to shut  down ( destoy ) the larger than life ( and all other political cable channels combined ) " FOX NEWS NETWORK ".

Only problem was Jake Tapper of ABC NEWS blew the lid off this not so presidential covert ops boondoggle, before it even got off the ground, right  in the morning White House news briefing.

Now that Barack took the embarrassing shellacking last November he decided it'd be best to just go after FOX one thorn in his side, on air personality, at a time this go round.

We all know how it worked out for Barack the last time, back before America actually had proof of what an utter failure he was ( is ), but his nihilistic, narcissistic, childlike inner being will not allow him to proceed in any other manner.

Once a muslim to christian convert, raised by communists, radical inner city community organizer, reparations driven, as corrupt as the day is long, somehow weaseled your way into our White House supposed to be 44th president of all of the citizens, but your not by a long shot.....always the same old, same old.....and that's a shame.

But hey good luck with the campaign fellas, your really gonna need it this time round.

Liberals ... we can't live with them, they couldn't survive without us ...

The Population Bomb

Submitted by amyshulk on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 10:49am.

Was/is derided as alarmist. I posit that *because* they were alarmists, they were heard, and that the road they foresaw was disrupted as a result. For that I consider them sucessful.

That's what Beck does. He connects seemingly disparate points to a *possible* end. Does he state that from this knowledge, naturally this WILL happen? Not that I see - he shows us what *MIGHT* happen, and armed with that knowledge, we can hopefully avert crises.

With a "make it so" at the helm with Pres. Obama, and a complicit magical thinking press, we need MORE critical thinking, not less!

My husband asks me why I bother watching/following the news/politics when I can't do anything about what so bothers me. I almost agree with him, then I remember how my son's friend, who voted for Pres. Obama, is much more informed now. He was personally affected {mom lost the house/he lost his job/wife was pregnant} and he lived with us for over a year. By watching these shows and discussing these things with me over the years, he will never again vote like he's picking prom king/queen.

He's Latino, and has a wide and deep family/friend base, and in turn has taken what we've learned together and informed his personal base - so while I'd not call him a D or R, I do know that he will give thought to what *could* happen by his vote, and am content I am not just spinning my wheels. On days my cynical side rises up to swamp me with "What's the point" negativity, I remember, and am heartened.

Considering the fiscal state of this country and Mr. Obama's failing grade in dealing with the Middle East unrest; one would think they would have plenty of material to cover their daily reality so called news shows.

Maybe Liberals have to accept the fact that with all of the decisions the White House have made and the crap their TV talking heads spit over the TV screen and airwaves, their followers maybe shrinking.

I am sure that is scary them and so they go on attack mode, not on this administration who is taking us deep into the hole, but to Conservation Radio/TV host.

25 Years worth of food?

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 11:18am.

I listen to Beck as much as I can, and catch his show a couple times a week.  I really like his Friday, prerecorded shows because they are so well done.  His message can be a downer at times, but that's only because of the seriousness of the issues he talks about.

My biggest contention with Beck's show, though, is that if we actually do have a total melt down of society, and the dollar blows up, and we need to hoarde food so we can feed our family, things are going to be a whole lot worse then even Beck makes them out to be.  Gold?  You can't eat gold in Beck's scenario.  He'd be more accurate telling us to collect shotguns instead of gold.  Gold is a safeguard against inflation, which is a good message to preach, but gold won't help if society collapses.

And 25 years worth of dehydrated food?  Really?

I missed the 25-years worth of dehydrated food statements. You sure it was 25 days? 25 years of dehyrdrated food takes up a lot of room. However a couple of cases of MREs or some other form or long-term-storage food items is always a good thing to have onhand here in hurricane country. I've personally been through some hurricanes and was left without power for several days. That sort of preparation helped tremendously. I also have several friends and relatives who went through Katrina and were glad to have had supplies like that onhand because it was several days until National Guard troops managed to get to them in some cases.

Beck has never said that anybody should stock up on 25 years worth of food.  The company that advertises on his show says that their dehydrated food lasts for 25 years.  So it's pitched, by implication.

The only really problem I have with Beck is his advertisers.  The dehydrated food company is the type of ad where Beck does "on air" advertisements where he wings the commercial and pitches how we need to have a food supply on hand, not for a short-term emergency, but for when the dollar becomes worthless and the government collapses.  He does the same sort of thing for "non engineered seeds" or something like that.

He also pitches "investing" in rare gold coins, where the mark-up is astronomical.  I have a problem with that too.

→ 25 years of food?

Submitted by Cool Arrow on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 2:15pm.

I heard 6 months.  Certainly not an unreasonable idea since those who have already done so are already ahead of the cost of commodities.

And as SNL conceded,  "He was right about gold!"

Where is SARCASMO when you need him?

25 years vs 6 months

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 2:27pm.

I don't have any issues at all with people growing their own gardens, canning their own food, or stockpiling food for six months or a year for a short-term emergency.  The company does pitch that their food will last for 25 years, and that's probably good advertising.

Regarding gold, I have absolutely no issue recommending  gold as an investment or as insurance vs. inflation.  I do have a problem with "rare coins" marked up 30% over the bid side of the market.

Except for the knowledgeable numismatic collecter, I don't see rare coins as the answer to anybody's portfolio.

Beck took on the devil

Submitted by buddyc on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 12:28pm.

Beck took on the devil (and the devil is NOT Obama, who is merely a tool of the devil) directly.  When I listened to what he said and how he did it I was very impressed.  He was in control.  He used the devil's own words to expose him.  He hit the target.  He was well prepared.  He was not vindictive.  He did major damage to the devil.

Now, the devil has called out all his minions who are considerable and powerful.  The devil has virtually unlimited money to spend on this fight.  The devil has and will spend millions to punish Beck.

The outcome of this fight is uncertain.  So far Beck is winning.  However, it is difficult to believe that any person could withstand the devil's focused power.

I am not a Beck zombie.  Sometimes it is too much to take.  Too much doom and gloom.  I rarely watch his show.  I occasionally listen to his radio show.  But, when I do watch or listen, I hear nothing but fact.  I hear and see things that are important.  I see Beck's sincerity.  I see his honesty.

Just one crack up, one mistake, or if Beck lets down his guard just one time, the devil will win.  Beck needs to be on his toes.  Very possible the devil will work hard on someone close to Beck.

I am on Beck's side.  Beck is the only one to take on the devil.  Beck is not perfect but so far he has been a true, honest and sincere fighter.  He has fought a good fight.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GLEN.

BE CAREFUL OF NOT JUST YOUR ENEMIES BUT THOSE CLOSE TO YOU.

IGNORE, people like Kurtz, Carr, the NY Times.  They are diversion.  They are merely tools.  They have no integrity.    If you fight them and win, it will be easy for the devil to replace them.  Your battle is with the devil.  Continue to take him on directly.

Right on, buddy

Submitted by Cool Arrow on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 2:08pm.

He's definitely taking on the devil, with the help of God.

When he refused to join the dogpile that formed over Shirley Sherod, and didn't get muddied up like the rest of the MSM (and the White House), I knew he had help from above in separating fact from fiction.

Beck is Must-See TV for me every weekday.

And, yes, I'm stocking up on food.  I wonder if that makes me one of those evil speculators O'Reilly keeps harping on.

Food....and Guns

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 2:42pm.

I always tell my friends that if they are fearing a total collapse of our economic system that they won't need gold, but they should stock up on canned goods and shotguns.

Don't take my question as snarky.  I'm interested in your opinion about this.

How much food should be stockpiled?  What happens when that runs out?  If we have a collapse, what will emerge?

My fear, regarding the possible collapse that Mr. Beck talks about, is that we end up with something like "The Road".  I don't think the sort of collapse Beck talks about has any good outcome, no matter how much food one can stockpile.

Would the disruption in our society be short lived enough that a stockpile of food would suffice?

Scarry stuff indeed.  I think it's why a lot of people don't give Beck a chance.

You smell a rat?

Submitted by darlajune on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 12:55pm.

There is a very angry rat who would like to take Glenn down.....his nickname is "Spookydude". These liberal mouthpieces are in the pathetic throes of angst at having the light of truth shine onto their dark theories. Kinda' reminds me of the Wizard of Oz scene when the wicked witch is melting, after having water thrown on her, crying out, "Oh, what a world, what a world!" Soon there is nothing left but her broom and her hat. Let's just watch them melt!

Glenn Beck has been right

Submitted by MPCPiano on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 1:55pm.

Glenn Beck sure had it right about Van Jones, who resigned in the cover of darkness during the weekend.

Glenn has had it right about the other Obama appointees and czars, the associations of Obama in Chicago, and lots of other things.

In reading Deconstructing Obama (Jack Cashill) about Bill Ayers as the real writer of Dreams From My Father, a running theme is the fear many credible writers and pundits have of the power of the MSM coming down on them and destroying them, therefore leaving them to avoid putting their name on the line with research and information they have that discredits Obama and the left. This reenforces the MSM's power to silence these people, as happened to Joe the Plumber, the Swift Boaters, and those with Obama/Ayers connections.

I watch the Beck show every

Submitted by Tom Paine on Mon, 03/07/2011 - 5:12pm.

I watch the Beck show every day, and while his delivery does tend to be melodramatic, there is no denying that he is thought-provoking and has been spot on with virtually all of his predictions.  You can also tell who liberals fear most by watching who they demonize.  In that respect Beck certainally appears to be their number one enemy.  That tells me he is doing something right.

Glenn Beck

Beck must spend much time putting the show together. He has all the facts. Yet, no 'change' happens. The thieves are still stealing and giving to their 'special interest groups. Vote buying.

all the TV I need

Submitted by Dianne93101 on Sat, 03/26/2011 - 12:11am.

Glenn Beck's show is pretty much the only show I watch regularly and most of the time the only show. I get humor, drama, reality, horror, love, spiritual teaching, hope and even occasional stories about love and sacrifice. What more TV do I need? And to anyone who says it's too depressing I'd like to find out what they watch instead. Sure there's a lot of great cable shows but the popular dramas are very depressing. It's really amusing to hear ppl bash Beck but can't prove him wrong. He has top of the line researchers like Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin have and are. I'm not sure how much he does as he has ADD but it doesn't matter because he delivers the goods brilliantly.

Contradicts Himself

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sat, 03/26/2011 - 12:39pm.

I listen to Beck's radio show almost every day, and watch his television show maybe two or three times a week.  I think he has a good message, and his Friday television shows are excellent because of the extra prep time they put into them.

I do have an issue with Beck, though, and that is when it comes to his Economic and Financial messages.  He has been preaching his message of dollar collapse and buying gold to hedge against that collapse for some time.  It's a timely message and one that should be heeded.  Gold can be a hedge against inflation.

Beck does tend to over analyze the day-to-day movements of the stock market.  The other day, he got caught up in trashing stocks because they were having a good run up.  He commented how stocks were only up because the dollar was getting weaker by the day.  Makes sense.

So, why are stocks bad, if they go up because of a weak dollar, but gold is good when gold goes up because because of a weak dollar?  Sometimes it seems like Beck is "touting his own book" a little too much.
