Eleanor Clift and Bill Press: 'U.S. Auto Industry Stronger Than It Ever Was'
Does a sycophantic devotion to the President make liberal media members lose all connection to reality?
Before you answer, consider that on Friday, Newsweek's Eleanor Clift and liberal radio host Bill Press actually said on PBS's "McLaughlin Group" the U.S. auto industry is stronger than it ever was (video follows with transcript and commentary):
BILL PRESS: Then there was the auto bailout. Our auto industry is stronger than it ever was today. It was a George Bush program continued by Barack Obama. If he had not continued those two programs, we’d be in the toilet still today.
JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, HOST: You say the auto industry is stronger than it ever has been?
PRESS: Yes, it is.
ELEANOR CLIFT, NEWSWEEK: Yes it is.
PAT BUCHANAN: No it is not.
MONICA CROWLEY: No.
PRESS: GM reported its first profits, John.
MCLAUGHLIN: I know that. I know that.
CLIFT: Well, General Motors now has a nice fat share of the market in China. They have recovered, excuse me, and millions of jobs have been saved.
Where do they get this stuff?
The American automobile industry has certainly recovered from its bottom a few years ago, but to suggest that it is stronger than it ever has been is either a flat out lie or totally ignorant.
As Bloomberg reported in January:
Toyota Motor Corp. was the world’s largest automaker for a third year in 2010 as a recovery in global vehicle demand outweighed a decline in U.S. sales.
Toyota’s sales, including its luxury Lexus marque and deliveries from affiliates Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd., rose 8 percent to 8.42 million units in 2010, the automaker said in a statement today. General Motors Co., the second-ranked car company, said in a separate statement that worldwide deliveries gained 12 percent to 8.39 million.
Remember the good old days when two of the three top companies by total sales worldwide would be American?
Apparently Clift and Press don't.
As for GM's market share in China, here's what the Wall Street Journal had to say about that just last Monday:
GM’s remarkable progress in China, the world’s largest auto market, hasn’t been very remarkable of late. GM’s market share fell from 13.2% to 11.4% year-over-year – and profits were down by almost a third.
As such, contrary to Clift's assertion, GM's "nice fat share of the market in China" is not only not very fat, but is also on the decline. And, as the Journal pointed out, so is its stock price:
After almost hitting $40 in early January, GM’s shares are now back down to their offering price of $33. [...]
[I]f Wall Street is so enthusiastic about GM, then why did its shares drop almost 5% after last Thursday’s earnings announcement, its first since the IPO?
And why has GM underperformed the S&P 500 by 15% since the start of the year?
Actually, GM shares closed under their IPO price Friday:

Despite this, one imagines Clift and Press still think the company is doing better than it ever has.
After all, even though you're supposedly a journalist, you wouldn't want to let little things like facts get in the way when there's a President you love in desperate need of your support.

To claim that our auto industry is stronger than ever is a total ignorance of American history. Uttering such idiocy is evidence of their lack of knowledge let alone intellect.
The real test for GM will be the rising cost of gasoline. Will orders for the Chevy Volt rise significantly as the price grows? If not, GM will flat-line again.

it's stronger (although this isn't true) not simply as a result of President Bush's program (although many disagree with it), but because Obama continued it...Well of course it is, just by virtue of the fact that "The One" had anything to do with it...kind of like the Midas Touch. Of course though, by that reckoning, the economy should have 0% unemployment by now, the housing industry should be humming along, and prices on everything from gas to food should be dropping. Hmmm...I guess there goes their theory, huh??

From Clift's and Press's point of view, the Auto Industry is stronger then it's ever been. Equity owners were almost wiped out, bond holders lost tons of money, and the union took over a good chunck of the industry.
You can't get much stronger then that!
(And, btw, when you wipe out most of your bond payments, it's pretty easy to make money.)

First- they're obviously overstating their position. I don't know what led up to these ridiculous statements, but apparently Press and Clift felt the need to aggrandize the President. They simply should have made the point that the auto makers are better off than they were two years ago and left it alone.
Second- in order to lavish praise on the President, they must first qualify it by stating that Bush started it and Obama simply followed his lead. This is becoming more commonplace. Anyone else notice this? The irony beacon is working overtime here.
And third- while the specifics of their statements are utterly ludicrous, GM and Mopar are better off now than in '09. The question though is why? Surely if we were all given massive amounts of other people's money, our personal fortunes would be improved. But not only that, GM and Mopar cut bloat, sold off assets, reduced labor wages through layoffs and renegotiation, and benefited through what was arguably an unlawful application of the bankruptcy laws.
So, combined with handouts, there was a certain amount of austerity involved in helping to turn around the US auto industry. Something these democrats don't seem to either admit, or want to use to help turn around the country's fortunes.
Regardless, any gains are likely short-lived since the majority shareholder has been able to install a pawn for a CEO and dictate the direction of the company(s) based upon a political belief rather than market forces. Chevy sold something like 281 Volts last month. Even with something like a 14% discount through rebates funded by -well, us- Chevy still can't push this thing beyond a few local Democratic administration's fleet vehicles. The future does not look bright, and I think it's reflected in the stock price.
Debt

At the end of 2008, GM had close to $52 billion in short and long-term debt. After the re-org, at the end of 2010, GM had only $14 billion in debt. It's pretty easy to turn a profit when you remove the related debt service on $38 billion.

CBS's Sunday Morning ran a coffee-spitting pro-obama "news article" this morning. While the video was showing gas at $4.19 in a major market (it's hovering just under $3.50 here in rural eastern NC), the commentator was saying "yes gas prices are going to get higher and food prices are rising" followed with words to the effect that everyone should be cool, everything's ok, things are going well. I got online and raised hell with them for being a mouthpiece for obama. I must not have been the only one.
Later in the program after they had moved on to other stories, completely out of their normal programming style, CBS Sunday Morning ran a follow-on clip from the same economist who said "The American economy is still on top and we're not expected to fall out of the top spot for several decades." How sweet. We're not expected to fall for several decades so no need to take actions to protect us in the future. By then it'll be someone else's problem so move along, nothing to see here.

Sad that Detroit, home of a large population of Muslims, is being destroyed and Ground Zero has yet to be built upon and yet Dubai has built itself into a major international city since 9-11. Too many people in America no longer believe in the exceptionalism of the American way of life.

GM hasn't paid back one cent
Submitted by Miss_Me_Yet on Sun, 03/06/2011 - 9:28pm.
GM hasn't paid back one cent of their original loan. It's all an Obama administration scam perpetrated against the American people.
Remember last year when the new CEO of GM went on TV to state we've completely paid of our government ( taxpayer ) funded loan? Technically he was telling the truth, while at the same time lying directly to the American people. The administration gave them a second, back room, hush, hush loan at 2%. Actually more like a line of credit.
They used this second loan to completely pay off the first one, without ever disclosing this information publicly. The president is scamming the American people regarding his illicit dealings.
As we found out from Rep. Bachmann today about 1.3 trillion of slush fund money hidden away in ObamaCare, this GM / corrupt union / corrupt president deal is just the tip of the illegal activities ( stealing from us ) undertaken by this president.
There's also the matter of $ 1 trillion in stimulus money which is gone with no accounting of where it actually went. Also the billions in interest paid back by the banks in the form of bail out interest, touted by the president as one of his great accomplishments, somehow that to is missing in action.
We have a commoncriminal living and operating his criminal enterprise directly out of our White House. Why do you suppose that is?

Given all the money that was given to GM, their having any positive trend shown at this time is easily explainable as due to this taxpayers' money which brought down their cost to do business by that amount.
Heck, if you gave any business the money to run, it would show a profitable outlook while it consumed that money. This is obviously deceptive and the whole bs is politically motivated to boot.

And by ignoring the real math -- that is to say, by attempting to divert our attention from the facts -- we will believe that socialism is the model for economic restoration.

If she thinks the US auto industry has never been stronger, than she must know nothing about the 1950's and 60's.
The "big three" enjoyed about 45% of the new car market in 2010. If I am not mistaken, their share was well over 90% in 1960, including at least 6 labels no longer made. Studebaker. Plymouth. Pontiac. Oldsmobile. Rambler. International.. In '56, Packard, Hudson and DeSoto were still producing. Kaiser ceased production in '55. Edsel ran for 3 years. There have literally been hundreds of US auto manufacturers.

As such, her failure to correct the assertion would not, in and of itself, constitute a silent lie, nor would her silence necessarily confer an implicit adoption of Press's claim. I suppose if the price of grain futures skyrocket, Farmer Jack can always have his field hands carry him to and from his "plantation" on their backs. Life is good in Louisiana.there you go again Jer*

There are very few large plantations that are family owned left here. The larger farms are corporate operations. The price of grain, seed and feed has already skyrocketed. And that realistic assessment of current problems here is from one of La's field hands. My family members were "share croppers" for generations. Your insult missed the mark. We are proud and when you snooty big city folks are fighting to survive, we down here, will be doing just fine thank you .
Oh please, cajun...

I guess I need to start adding "kidding" symbols even to posts which I think are obvious jests. (And don't even try to out "hard time" me on family background. My mom had to keep the little family farm going from the time her daddy died at age 32 early in the Depression and she was only10. No indoor plumbing until long after she had moved away. And she was better off than my dad.)Jer~

I know, but it still bums me out! He can be such a nice guy, but then he has to go all liberal on us. ;)
Speaking of Jer...where did he go?? He seems to have run away quicker than the 14 Democrats in Wisconsin. I guess Half Pint really does disturb him.

When a liberal has no argument, they resort to mud slinging or concentrate on minutiae. When Jer can find a suitable non insulting but arrogant retort, he'll be back.;-)

who insinuated I was clueless about the spike in oil prices, instructed me to "wake up", and then slammed me for being condescending by replying that she should read the newspapers--hardly a vicious insult on my part but nevertheless I apologized for stating. And yet somehow I'm still the "bad" guy.Jer*

My "wake up Jer" was a joke and yet you called me a "so called expert" who should read a newspaper. When you insult, its a poorly worded joke. When cajun makes a joke, its an insult. Ok, got it... I think.
I never called you a "bad guy". I called you a liberal. Was that an insult Jer?

Who's Pete? And of what consequence is this to him? ^_^ For me, your post came off as joke with some snark. So I guess you told a snoke. Or a jark. :)"If not us, who? If not now, when?"

GM went broke because on average they were selling cars for less than it cost to build them. The biggest liability being pension and healthcare costs of its union workforce. Saturn was a perfect example of this. Saturn never turned a dime of profit. And GM's new Volt is turning out to be a flop.
Now GM is touting its market share in China? That's a zero margin market that GM won't be able to compete in, unless they're willing to use low wage third world labor.
GM is also saddled with debt. Over $50 billion if you count what they owe the U.S. taxpayers. Why would anyone invest in a company that has no net worth, and whose only future growth prospects lay in an unprofitable market?
The two largest institutional shareholders in GM (the UAW and the Canadian government) have unloaded over $1 billion in GM shares since December.

The company is only profitable because it does not have to pay taxes.
