Huckabee Rips Media for Calling Him a Birther: ‘They Must Be Afraid I Can Beat Obama'

As NewsBusters previously reported, advocacy media outlets such as MSNBC and the New York Times Tuesday cherry-picked comments by Mike Huckabee to make him look like a birther.

On Wednesday, the former Arkansas governor went back on the Steve Malzberg radio show to address his accusors who he claimed are attacking him because they're afraid he "might end up getting some traction running for president and [beat] Barack Obama" (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):

MIKE HUCKABEE, FORMER ARKANSAS GOVERNOR: Some of these guys don’t seem to be able to read, because if they would read my book, they would know exactly what I said and what I intended. I clearly said that I misspoke when I used the word Kenya instead of Indonesia. But, I’ve never seen the media so completely desirous to write their story before they even found out what was actually said.

STEVE MALZBERG, HOST: Well, Governor, the thing here is, and let’s take the New York Times first. They were one of the first to call over here and wanted the interview sent to them. As far as I know, we sent them the interview. I gave a statement to a girl who said, “Okay, let me start writing down.” And I said, “This is a bunch of nonsense.” And then they, we sent them the interview, they did their story, and I’m holding the headline of the story in my hand, “Huckabee Questions Obama Birth Certificate.” Now, that’s insane because you said completely the opposite. And it’s not just me that heard. They heard it because I sent it to them.

HUCKABEE: Well, it’s really inexplicable because I have been very clear. I’ve said it on “Good Morning America,” I’ve said it on C-SPAN. I’ve said it in front of a room full of a hundred reporters in Washington last week when I spoke at the National Press Club. There were plenty of reporters, both cameras as well as audio there to capture it. I’ve said it in spite of the fact that it isn’t necessarily something that a lot of conservatives want to hear. But I’ve said it because that’s what I believe. I’ve written it that way in my book. I’ve answered the question every time I’ve been asked. But they are determined to say that I said something that I did not say. I’m just simply beyond myself to explain how to get them to get it. […]

It’s hard for me to understand. I mean, Obama can talk about visiting all 57 states, and that’s just, “Gee, he’s tired.” You know, I’m doing 30, 40 interviews a day on the book tour. I’m going from five in the morning till midnight every night. And clearly what I wrote was about his childhood in Indonesia, about his Kenyan father and grandfather who he says was tortured by the Brits during the Mau Mau revolution. All of that is spelled out.

Indeed. As Britain's Sunday Times reported in December 2008:

Barack Obama’s grandfather was imprisoned and brutally tortured by the British during the violent struggle for Kenyan independence, according to the Kenyan family of the US President-elect.

Hussein Onyango Obama, Mr Obama’s paternal grandfather, became involved in the Kenyan independence movement while working as a cook for a British army officer after the war. He was arrested in 1949 and jailed for two years in a high-security prison where, according to his family, he was subjected to horrific violence to extract information about the growing insurgency.

“The African warders were instructed by the white soldiers to whip him every morning and evening till he confessed,” said Sarah Onyango, Hussein Onyango’s third wife, the woman Mr Obama refers to as “Granny Sarah”.

Mrs Onyango, 87, described how “white soldiers” visited the prison every two or three days to carry out “disciplinary action” on the inmates suspected of subversive activities.

“He said they would sometimes squeeze his testicles with parallel metallic rods. They also pierced his nails and buttocks with a sharp pin, with his hands and legs tied together with his head facing down,” she said The alleged torture was said to have left Mr Onyango permanently scarred, and bitterly antiBritish. “That was the time we realised that the British were actually not friends but, instead, enemies,” Mrs Onyango said. “My husband had worked so diligently for them, only to be arrested and detained.”

Mr Obama refers briefly to his grandfather’s imprisonment in his best-selling memoir, Dreams from My Father, but states that his grandfather was “found innocent” and held only for “more than six months”.

This report was all the rage that month in 2008, even getting quoted by the far-left website the Huffington Post.

As such, all Huckabee was citing in his book and repeated on Monday was established history of Obama’s family.

Is this suddenly verboten? Was Arianna guilty of hate speech for mentioning Obama's Kenyan father and grandfather at her website? Or are only liberals allowed to bring this up? But I digress:

HUCKABEE: I immediately corrected it and said, “Let me clarify.” I don’t think he ever grew up in Kenya. But he did spend part of his formative years in Indonesia. But he did have a Kenyan father and a Kenyan grandfather. So I believe he was born in Hawaii.

Stop the tape. Huckabee just clearly stated, "I believe he was born in Hawaii." Doesn't sound like he's either a birther or pandering to them, does it?

He continued:

HUCKABEE: I have no reason to think otherwise personally. Others do. I’ve made that clear. Somewhere in the midst of all this, I’m considered guilty of hate speech, incompetent to be president. It’s really one of those things where it must be that there are people in the media who are afraid that I might end up getting some traction running for president and beating Barack Obama. I can’t figure out any other reason that they would be so exorcized over a verbal gaffe that I have immediately not only acknowledged but corrected and am in print being very clear as to exactly what I meant. […]

I’m surprised by Joe Scarborough. I’ve known Joe. He’s a friend, and frankly he’s the kind of guy I think would have picked up the phone or sent me an e-mail and said, “Did you mean this?” But, you know, it’s a, it’s a fun story for them to blow up, but I, I think it really shows the sad state of American journalism when people fail to do a little source checking. I’ve had people call my office, and even when my staff said, “It’s in his book – read it,” and gave them the page numbers, they still called back and said, “Well, does he believe that he was born in Indonesia?” Nobody’s ever said that. […]

It’s one thing for the bloggers, people who really aren’t journalists but they’re just opinion makers. But when you have what used to be legitimate organizations like the Associated Press and the New York Times who can’t get it right, who can’t even read a simple book that was written so simply that they could understand it, then I do worry about the future of journalism in this country.

Indeed. However, Huckabee could have added MSNBC's Chris Matthews to this list, as for the second night in a row, the "Hardball" host attacked the former Arkansas governor. He even lead with this so-called story:

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Leading off tonight: The Huckster. When Mike Huckabee's spokesman says Huckabee didn't mean to say President Obama grew up in Kenya, that he really meant to say he grew up in Indonesia, it's a lot to swallow. First of all, both assertions are wrong. The president grew up, if you will, in the United States. He went to the best prep school in Hawaii. Second, Huckabee mentioned British imperialism. Well, the Brits were in Kenya, not Indonesia. And the Mau Mau revolution, that also occurred in Kenya.

No, Mike Huckabee just joined the long list of discredited Republicans spreading the bogus story that Barack Obama's presidency is somehow illegitimate because he`s some kind of foreigner, the right's favorite propaganda that won`t die. That`s our top story.

Later, with guests David Corn of Mother Jones and Salon's Joan Walsh in the studio acting as willing accomplices, Matthews proved Huckabee's point that this is all about liberals fearing he could actually beat Obama:

MATTHEWS: This guy, Huckabee -- we ought to put it on. He's leading the Republican polls right now...

JOAN WALSH, SALON: He's leading.

MATTHEWS: ... in our latest poll.

WALSH: I know.

MATTHEWS: He's not some character offstage we're beating up here tonight. He's some guy who may well be the Republican nominee for president. And he walks out there and starts talking like this in the world, I think it's going to shake the -- there he is, 25 percent.

If you needed any more proof this about assassinating a possible threat to Obama, here's how Matthews ended this segment:

It's scary, and I hope the rest of the world is not paying attention to Mike Huckabee.

But that wasn't enough, for Matthews concluded Wednesday's program by going after Huckabee again:

Thank you for proving Huckabee's point, Mr. Matthews. You're obviously scared to death that someone is going to emerge and actually beat the man that gives you a thrill up your leg.

As a result, since Huckabee is suddenly leading in the polls as the GOP's front-runner, Matthews, ever the good little Democrat shill, has to take the Arkansas governor on over a simple mistake the man has already acknowledged and apologized for.

You see, only Democrats like Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are allowed to make gaffes. As this episode once again clearly demonstrates, Republicans aren't.

Sad state of American journalism indeed.

Huckabee is just the recipient of what will be the media attack machine flexing its muscles gettin' ready to go varmint huntin'.  They have been goading the Republicans to come out and annnounce so they can get a clear shot.

The Republicans field should hold themeselves back as long as possible and then come out enmasse.   That way the media will have to shoot wildly and some Republican is bound to make it through.

The Republicans could also sponsor a decoy candidate and let the media waste a lot of ammunition.

I see, so you're one of those so-called conservatives who said McCain was the same as Obama and couldn't help but let Obama win.

I AM SICK of all you so-called conservatives who complain about not getting the perfect nominee you want. You might as well be liberals because you're aiding and abetting them the same as if you were one.

There are a LOT of Republican candidates I can't stand. But in the end I weigh it on a couple of things

How different are their policies? Looking at any of the likely to run Republicans I see a world of difference in social, economic, and foreign,

VS.

How corrupt and of poor character are they so that the public sours on them and wants a Democrat to be less corrupt (i.e. Nixon, Delay)

McCain would have been better than Obama, but you wouldn't have seen what you are seeing now; a chance for conservatism to step forward.  Huckabee is a fiscal and goverining liberal (look at Arkansas when he was Governor and what he signed) and a social conservative.  Another George Bush, and we know what happened to the conservatives under him.

We need a non-Ron Paul fiscal conservative.  Several of the Governors (Christie, maybe Walker, maybe Kasich, NOT Jeb Bush) are fiscal conservatives.  Huckabee, Romney, are not conservatives and therefore I cannot vote for them without holding my nose.

Here's some other things you wouldn't have seen: Obamacare, a trillion dollar "stimulus", a hate America apology tour, Government motors, etc, etc.

Conservatism may have a chance to step forward now, but if Obamacare isn't slapped down by the Supreme Court, it really isn't going to matter.

He is a little dimply, smiley, and diet-y for me. Not the worst of the lot so far, but I am not in love. His explanation for his misspeaks on Kenya on O'Reilly were sort of weasly, in my opinion--you can read in my book etc. Did he write his own book? Maybe he should have read it... I dunno--just seemed wussy to me.

Here we go again.

Submitted by Ashrak on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 11:07pm.

Natural Born Citizen doesn't just hinge upon Obama being born in Hawaii (if he even was). If it did, then Osama Bin Laden could sneak one of his wives into the country, see her give birth here and then have a child eligible to be President.  Ridiculous.

Clearly, our Founders and original Framers meant to protect the Office of President by limiting it to only those born with singular allegience to only this country. That takes being born to two American Citizens. Obama doesn't have that by his own admission. Notice, he has never said " I am a Natural Born Citizen of these united States." Never once has he actually said it. Why? Because he is very smart, that's why.

It is pretty sad that nobody in media will see this conversation play out honestly and forthrightly. Nope, nothing but obfuscation and demonization. That tells me that they know full well that Barry Soetoro is a usurper and they are just being intentionally intellectually dishonest about it in order to play CYA.

Someone does not have to be born to two US citizens in order to be considered a US citizen themselves...Only one parent needs to be a US citizen. In fact, a person can be born outside of the US and still be considered a US citizen as long as one of the parents is a US citizen.

You are correct in that...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 1:19am.

there is a difference between being a citizen (such as a naturalized citizen) and being a natural born citizen. However, I am having trouble finding anything that clearly and definitively states that both parents of a person running for president, must be natural born US citizens. I don't believe that that is true. Based on what I have read, only one parent must be a US citizen, and they must be natural born. As for the person running for president, he or she must be a natural born citizen, and they are considered natural born if they are born in the US themselves, or, if they are born out of the US but at least one of their parents is a natural born US citizen. This is my understanding of this question, based on all that I have read about it, from a number of sources. Obviously, there seems to be quite a lot of confusion and differences in interpretation about this issue.

Maybe "natural born" needs to disappear

Submitted by TheHistorian on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 7:29am.

Have we thought about getting rid of the "natural born"?   After all, if you get a natural born citizen like Obama, and compare him to Mark Steyn, who isn't even a citizen, there is no comparison to their patriotism and appreciation of the rights of the people.  I have heard numerous naturalized citizens on call-in shows that beat the natural born all hollow.

Research it out, see why the Natural Born Citizen requirement was written into the Constitution. Therein you will see it for yourself. Don't take my word for it, even though I am quite sure of my own position. Don;t see me words convince you, let your own research do that for itself.

Whne you do so, you will see why I said what I did. Examine how and why the authors had to specifically exempt themselves from that very requirement. That context will help you understand if you take it seriously.  Hint: "Vattel"

The only way Obama is legit is if Barack Obama Senior isn't his actual father, in which case he is exposed as a liar, a fraud, a fabrication, anyway.

As a parting set of questions;

If Obama went to Pakistan in the early 80's as he said, on which country's passport did he travel? Remember, he had to get an American Passport while he was Senator of Illinois.

Why does his SS# come back tied to Connecticut?

What are the specific answers to the adoption questions and what affirmations did he make at age 18? Selective service documents?

On what Citiznship status did he attend college?

Why not get and release a long form matching the Nordyke twins example?

Why see Lakin, a soldier who did nothing more than uphold his oath, sit in jail instead of doing so?

Do you think that a COLB is the same thing as a Birth Certificate? Have you researched out the Hawaiian COLB itself to see to whom, and how, they were issued?

I eagerly await those answers. You would be the first to answer most of them, because the answers and the proof for them is straight up buried, sealed up, locked away, hidden, by ((((((SHOCKER ALERT)))))) executive order.

The definition of citizenship, as found in the Constitution, didn't make an appearance until LONG AFTER the last of the Founders won the death pool.

Can you show me where in the Constitution it states that Vattel remotely matters?  Can you show me where it says to refer to his works for...anything?

Can you show me where in the Constitution it specifically states that BOTH parents have to be citizens in order to confer citizenship onto a child born to them?

I think the guest that Mike Huckabee invites on his Fox News weekend show reveals a lot about his politics. He's had some pretty nutty people on. For instance...Richard Dryfus (I call him Richard Doofus) was on his show last year preaching his mental illness (liberalism) to the audience. I don't think the folks took too kindly to little Richard.

I still prefer Mitt Romney over any other candidate at this point in time.

Oh, I saw a picture the other day (I forget which website) of a 5 or 6 year old 0bama playing in the Indian Ocean off Kenya. The only way to stop a second Obama term is for the states to pass a law requiring any presidential candidate to show proof of citizenship.

Mitt Romney is the best of the bunch. I am assuming that my very favorite candidate, Chris Christie, is not going to run.  Romney's baggage is the healthcare system he enacted in Massachusetts.

Here is what Congressman Paul Ryan says about Massachusetts healthcare plan:

“It’s not that dissimilar to Obamacare, and you probably know I’m not a big fan of Obamacare. I just don’t think the mandates work … all the regulation they’ve put on it.”

“I haven’t studied in depth the status of it,” he continued, “but I think it’s beginning to death spiral. They’re beginning to have to look at rationing decisions. I don’t think this health care system works. That’s why I’m a believer in a consumer-based medicine, in consumer-based patient-centered reforms health care reforms.”

It's not Americas fault

Submitted by Miss_Me_Yet on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 3:01am.

It's not America's fault Barack Hussein Obama is the illegitimate president. Barack brought this upon himself by hiding his past from us, through executive order and his now infamous back room dirty dealing.

No other president, or any other public official, in our countries history has done such a thing.

He is hiding something from the American people which is tantamount to lying and cheating us at the very least, all the way up to treasonous and actionable by impeachment.

His response so far is to call a large segment of the American people racist for merely questioning his deceitful behavior. These are not the actions one should accept from our president. These are more the actions of a guilty, desperate man trapped in a lie.

Before he attempts to win a second term as president of the United States of America, he must prove he is who he has sworn under oath he is, if not willingly, then by court order. We cannot allow him to ignore and vilify Americans, unless he can show us he is in fact one of us.It's the least he can do.

Submitted by Van Halen on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 4:48am.

I'll say it again. I don't think it's a citizenship issue with Obama. I think the reason he's hiding his birth certificate is that he doesn't want some information on it known that will break the Obama mystique we've all been fed.

For instance, it probably says Father:unknown. If that's the case, it would show Obama has been lying about his father and make him look very bad. We already know there are glaring inaccuracies in what Obama - in his own words - has said about meeting his father.

Why Obama is hiding the school records is anybody's guess. And what about ME-Chelle? Wasn't she supposed to have a law license at some point? What happened to that?

You've stated the basic position that a lot, if not most, of what "birthers" have come to: BO is hiding his long-form birth cert for some reason. What that reason is, we don't know, but there are an awful lot of questions that need answering. His official story, as you note, just doesn't add up.

As the bloom comes off the rose, more and more people are willing to talk, and we're going to see more and more claims come forward that will seem like crazy nonsense at first.

set free a murderer who wound up killing 4 cops years later and then refused to "man up" and take at least partial responsibility. Also, re Obama being born outside the U.S., I figure if that had happened, Shrillary's "investigators" (the same ones who terrorized Kathleen Willey)  would have found that out during the Dem primaries in 2008 and told the entire world. No doubt in my mind.

Submitted by ricklail on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 8:51am.

It doesn't matter who the Republicans put up they are going to be attacked constantly by the media. Look at Herman Cain. They've already started calling him a house n-----. The man is a brillant man but he would be a threat to DUH ONE.

Everybody that the Repbulicans put up will have some baggage from Romney, failed health care in Mass, to Huckabee, too Christian. To the MSM Herman Cain is not black enough. Whomever it is, outside of Herman Cain, I'll hold my nose and vote for them. Anyone that get rid of Dear Leader.

ABO Anybody But Obama. Can't believe I am saying this but even Shillary would be better than him.

Sorry Huck...it's not because they think you can win, it's because all the LSM needs is to have a republican open their mouth....and they'll insert their own template.

Same goes for Romney and Newt "Wither on the Vine" Gingrich.

Anybody who ran last time for President should not run this time. Huckabee and Romney are RINO's. Who needs/wants them?

I am with you there RJ.  I cannot see myself voting for Newt, Romney or Huck.  We need some new fresh conservative blood in there, not tired old RINO's.

That's exactly right

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 10:34am.

The media will insert their own template.  Huck is such a sunny optomist that he isn't cowed by the MsM.  Having said that, he doesn't take crap from them.

Personally, I don't think Huckabee is going to run (I hope not).  For now, he's a lightning rod for the leftist media, which is fine by me.

I like Huck, on a personal level.  He's a very personable man, and is quite good at taking on the liberal whack jobs (like Richard Dreyfuss), while being quite nice, totally destroying their idiot liberal arguments.  As a candidate, No.  NO.  I think Huck will be extremely effective supporting the Republican candidate, however.

Interestingly, Newt Gingrich is now "suspended" from Fox while he decides whether to run.  Sit down and be quiet Newt.  Huck is still on.

I am not enamored with Pawlenty nor Mitch Daniels.  Palin has too many negatives, and is far more effective where she is.  Herman Cain is great, but outside of the political paradigm.  Haley Barbour is a question mark for me. Unless we get some new young gun like Paul Ryan, Chris Christie, Marco or Allen, I believe we'll end up with Romney.  And I'm actually okay with that.  I know Mitt has the whole RomneyCare albatross around his neck.  But....he was the Governor of one of the most liberal states in the land, and a state-wide health insurance mandate IS a states right issue, and was appropriate (if patently stupid) IMO.  So I can live with it.  Also, I think Romney has the FISCAL CHOPS to totally dismantle Obama on the campaign trail, and may just be what we need to put this house of cards together again (the budget).

The LSM seems to be pushing for a republican frontrunner already. (along with Ingraham) Huckabee seems to be making news right now, and Newt seems to be the LSM darling now also. But sorry Newt...you might or might not be the 'smartest person on the planet', but no matter what reason the LSM might be building you up for, you don't stand a chance. (nothing personal Newt..well, ..yea it is personal....your past personal life).

It's kind of hard to argue that Romney has the fiscal chops to put the budgetary house of cards together again when he pushed for and signed such a fiscally irresponsible bill in Romneycare. He'll get my vote if he's the candidate though, as will pretty much anyone else. Four year of a Marxist in the White House is bad enough. We don't need eight.

Mr. Huck,

I am sorry you would not beat Obama.  Not a chance - you have too much baggage and to get caught in this trap from the LEFT you are showing you cannot get out of your own lunch bag.

Time for someone else to stand up and try for the spot - The problem is this;  "Even though you may think Obama was born on MARS, he is the President and YOU will ALWAYS be ID'd as a NUT if you try to dispute, talk, offer an opinion or even breathe to someone that he may not be original.

Sorry, I am a conservative and vote so,  but MIke Huck will NOT have a chance if he can get his butt out of this trap the LEFT has set for him and he always falls into.

JUST SAY NEXT QUESTION next time.

How many of you really know Mike Huckabee's stances?

Submitted by RocktheJungle on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 11:52pm.

I think there are a lot of people who don't know much about Huckabee so you are just believing what the LSM is telling you about his political leanings. the Governor is  clean living and people can't take a politician being  so squeaky clean.
