Daily Mail: Lara Logan Stripped, Punched and Whipped With Flag Poles‎

By Noel Sheppard | February 21, 2011 | 11:06

British newspapers are reporting some truly shocking details about what happened to CBS's Lara Logan when she was attacked in Egypt after President Hosni Mubarak resigned.

Originally revealed by the Sunday Times (subscription required), the following appeared in Monday's Daily Mail:

According to one source, reported in The Sunday Times newspaper, sensitive parts of her body were covered in red marks that were originally thought to have been bite marks.

After further examination they were revealed to be from aggressive pinching.

It has also been revealed that she was stripped, punched and slapped by the crowd, which was labelling her a spy and chanting 'Israeli' and 'Jew' as they beat her.

And medical sources have revealed  that marks on her body were consistent with being whipped and beaten with the makeshift poles that were used to fly flags during the demonstration.

An unnamed friend of the reporter told The Sunday Times: 'Lara is getting better daily. The psychological trauma is as bad as, if not worse than, the physical injuries. She might talk about it at sometime in the future, but not now.'

It is indeed interesting that these details are coming from British news outlets rather than American ones, in particular CBS itself. Some press members in the States expressed concern regarding the slowness in which Logan's employers revealed the incident.

Most notable was the Washington Post's Richard Cohen who wrote Wednesday:

Say what you will about New York's celebrated tabloids, they know news when they see it. This is why both the New York Daily News and the New York Post devoted their front pages to the sexual assault by a mob in Cairo of CBS correspondent Lara Logan. Say what you will about CBS, it either doesn't know what news is or felt that the privacy of an employee was more important than its obligation to inform the public. It has it backwards. [...]

As I'm sure even Logan would admit, the sexual assault of woman by a mob in the middle of a public square is a story. It is particularly a story because the crowd in Tahir Square was almost invariably characterized as friendly and out for nothing but democracy. In fact, some of the television correspondents acted as if they were reporting from Times Square on New Year's Eve, stopping only at putting on a party hat. In those circumstances, a mass the sexual assault in what amounted to the nighttime version of broad daylight is certainly worth reporting.

As Cohen pointed out, the New York Post reported details about the Logan attack that were also newsworthy:

A network source told The Post that her attackers were screaming, "Jew! Jew!" during the assault. And the day before, Logan had told Esquire.com that Egyptian soldiers hassling her and her crew had accused them of "being Israeli spies.

In Cohen's view, "[T]he assault and its undertones of pogromist anti-Semitism (Logan is not Jewish) is very troubling and, at the very least, suggests that not everyone in Tahrir Square that night had democracy on their mind."

This was confirmed by the Daily Mail:

Witnesses say the mainly peaceful protests to end Mubarak's rule had taken a more violent turn after the Egyptian president announced his resignation.

The military presence controlling the amount of people entering Tahrir Square seemed to evaporate, and an angrier element had flowed in.

Yet, as Cohen accurately noted, "[T]he crowd in Tahir Square was almost invariably characterized as friendly and out for nothing but democracy. In fact, some of the television correspondents acted as if they were reporting from Times Square on New Year's Eve, stopping only at putting on a party hat."

Without question, American media were as jubilant about what was happening in Tahrir Square as the participants, and desperately wanted to paint a picture of a peaceful, democracy-loving crowd.

The same can be said of how the protests in Wisconsin are being covered. Union-backing so-called "journalists" don't want the public to see the signs being carried by "tolerant" liberals around Madison's Capitol building any more than they wished to disturb the image of a peaceful revolution in Egypt.

Potentially more unsettling is how these same media outlets for months depicted Tea Partiers as an angry, racist, gun-toting, violent, homophobic mob.

What a difference a protest's agenda makes especially if there are indeed acts of violence or hostile imagery on display.

How Many Times?

Submitted by Bourbeau on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 11:14am.

How many times, do stories like this develop, and the media sit by and make excuses for themselves, depending on their organizational biases.  CBS was the same network that allowed Dan Rather egregiously distort George Bush's service record and took it's sweet time to deal with it.  Whose responsible for the lapses in in the Logan story?  Are there any names?  Whose the circle of editors who decide what programming hits the airwarves for CBS?  How about MSNBC, do we know their names?  Why aren't they held accountable for their obvious failings.  News is news; if anyone is deciding what exactly news is, then that person(s) should be identified and asked what the hell they were thinking?  It's exactly this kind of nonsense that has brought the ABCs, NBCs and CBSs to their knees; not to mention the likes of the NY Times, Washington Post and LA Times.  Memo to all of them, "You reap what you sow."  Enjoy eating crow.

Protect Laura? NO. Protect muslims? To the death!

Submitted by ThisnThat on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 11:26am.

It's really too bad details like this have to be published. It really shouldn't be necessary. And it wouldn't be -- if only our MSM just decided to start telling the truth about evil and good. What makes them think they always have to bend the truth to protect the most evil aspects of humanity? Why is Islam always good -- always? While Christianity is always bad? CBS has no trouble at all with articles about sexual abuse by some priests. They are leaders in spreading that information around. But let a mob of muslims rape and beat one of their correspondents? Well, then it must be covered up, not talked about, lest a bit of truth about the muslim society become common knowledge.

Our MSM is absolutely disgusting. And dangerous. Thank God for an opportunity to seek out other sources for the truth. And I'll tell you -- it's sad when we have to respect the ulta-liberal UK Guardian above any and all of our US MSM outlets to get the truth. Damn CBS. Damn NBC -- and ABC, and all the others.

What a bunch of savages

Submitted by Dave. on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 11:27am.

As for the reluctance of much of the MSM to report this hideous incident, is anyone really surprised?

After all, most of the MSM has been trying through lies and deceipt for years to convince us that Islam is a valid religion and has a place in a civilized world.

It is not, and it does not.

This is a story about major league stupidity.

Submitted by Red Jeep on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 11:32am.

Whoever sent Logan there should be fired for stupidity. Logan could have been killed.

Logan should have been smarter than to go there, especially with her blonde hair uncovered and wearing pearls in a crowd of Muslim men. This isn't Kansas anymore. Liberal values do not apply in Egypt or any other Muslim country. What we think should be is not what is.

Wouldn't she have learned/ observed just as much or more form a roof top overlooking Tahrir Square as to be in a crowd of men and not knowing their language?

Yes it is sad what happened, but if you touch a hot stove you can expect to get burned.

Citizens of "The World"

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 1:06pm.

It seems that most western journalists have a mindset that they are citizens of the world, and not of their actual country.  This is how they rationalize giving up secret information of their home country, even when it puts lives at risk.  So they are shocked when others don't recognize this "worldwide citizenry", and are further shocked when their elevated status of journalists in the United States isn't recognized in some foreign country.

CBS had it right!

Submitted by Newsbubba on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 11:50am.

A pack of Arab, Islamic men beating the crap out of, and sexually assaulting a blond female which they, of course, assume is a JEW, is NOT NEWS, people!  It is pretty ordinary for the Middle East.

The MSM wil not wake up and tell the truth about this Dark Age part of the world.  It is as barbaric today as it was 1000 years ago.  It actually may be worse today!

That's why CBS and all the other MSM outlets had to try to bury it.  They are doing the same in Wisconsin.  Teachers who average $100,000 a year plus all free benefits pissed because they may lose some of it?  please.  If their education system in Wisconsin actually turned out kids who could read and write, they might have an argument.

Rape?

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 1:12pm.

I still haven't read anywhere that this woman was raped.  I sure hope she wasn't.  What happened to her was terrible, and sexual, but I still haven't seen anything about it being a rape.

I say this because, even though I'm a huge fan of Glen Beck, I was a little disapointed at him when he was discussing this story on his radio show, and kept yelling that this woman was raped.  Unless he knows something that most people don't know he should be a little more careful when talking about what happened to this lady.

Kingfish17,

Submitted by Ashrak on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 2:10pm.

On that point about rape, I point to the use of the langauge "sexual assault". Now that could very well be limited to the "pinching" referred to here- depending upon where the "pinching" was done. So too is that true, I suppose, regarding the "stripping".

I look to the fact that it was reported she was hospitalized and also that she had internal injury. Putting together those reports, with the "flag poles", an ugly picture comes to mind. That she has not come out and talked about what happened by now leads me to believe what happened to her was pretty serious.

Beck has demonstrated a willingness to say the hard things, as other mainstream media members either dance around or omit things. I offer this is another in a long line of those examples.

I would also offer that reporters themselves are a bit freaked out by the hundreds of examples of attacks upon those in their profession. They have, for as long as I can remember, considered themselves as untouchable. A reality check is taking place as they find themselves just people, vulnerable to the very violence they thought they were aside from.

The power brokers in the Old Media are stumped. They either report this story, which destroys the story line they wish to report, or they just ignore it, which demonstrates how they spike stories that don't fit their agenda. Either way, they look stupid and dishonest. Obviously, they are choosing to preserve the agenda......

I think Beck was wrong in

Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 2:53pm.

I think Beck was wrong in saying "rape'.  However, sexual assault is not necessarily "milder", it can be just as painful, phsyically and mentally traumatizing.

At this point I personally don't think the distinction matters.  The woman was attacked brutally because she's white by the "religion of peace".  This is how they think of all women.

Agree for the most part

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 3:08pm.

I would agree that in the context of what happened, that the disintion between a sexual asault, general physical assaults, and a rape, does not matter.  The only area where the distinction might matter, is with regards to Ms. Logan.  If she wasn't raped, then in all likelyhood, she would probably not want what happened to her spun into a rape.

Reply to Ashrak: Appreciate the extra info

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 2:49pm.

Thanks for the extra information.  I haven't read anything about internal injuries to Ms. Logan.  If you could link your source for that I'd be very appreciative.  Your implication of what could have happened would, of course, qualify as a rape.

This lady has been through hell, no matter if her employer, or herself, used bad judgment.  When I heard Beck proclaiming that she had been raped, it raised a red flag because I haven't seen that information coorborated anywhere else.  Like I said, I am a fan of Beck, and i don't want his messages to get sidetracked by the MSM if it turns out Ms. Logan wasn't actually raped, but only sexually assaulted and beat up.  I'll cut Beck all the slack in the world, but you and I know the MSM will not.

If she was indeed raped, then I would hope any story that talked about this incident would make that known, and not go with the"milder" sexually assaulted headline.

Any source information you can provide is much appreciated.

(Edit:  Sorry, Ashrak.  I put this in the wrong response area.)

(Follow up edit:  I did a search myself and the only stories I could find relating to internal injuries were stories that talked about injuries associated with getting whipped and beaten with flag poles or other similar injuries that happen with traumatic assaults.)

I have absolutely now idea which source I first read about "internal injuries" as I have seen that so many times. In an effort to offer you a source, I typed "Lara Logan internal injuries" and the first example on the list of 271 thousand comes up as NY Post entry;

"Friends said she wants to return to work, but won't be coming back anytime soon after suffering what the network called "serious" internal injuries in the ugly Feb. 11 incident, which CBS revealed Tuesday."

Thanks Ashrak

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 12:37pm.

Thanks for the reply, Ashrak.  I followed a couple of those links, and they only served to reinforce my belief that there is no substantive information released, as of yet, that Ms. Logan was actually raped.  I am, of course, not downplaying the severity of her injuries or the heinous nature of her sexual assault.  My only point was that I think it was innapropriate for Glen Beck to say over and over again that she had been raped.
