ObamaCare Creator Making Comic Book to Sell the Legislation
The MIT economist behind much of the concepts involved in ObamaCare is making a comic book to try to get Americans to like his idea.
The Boston Herald reported Tuesday (h/t Jules Crittenden):
Jonathan Gruber, a nationally recognized health economist who devised the economic underpinnings of Obamacare (Gruber hates the term), said his three comic-loving kids encouraged him to use the hip format of the graphic novel — basically an expensive comic published in book form — to tell the story of the complicated plan to 300 million Americans. [...]
“I’m going to use the facts to tell the story,” Gruber, 45, told the Pulse yesterday. “I’m the narrator guiding the reader through the law. It’ll have lots of pictures and text.”
Hill and Wang, a division of publishing powerhouse Farrar, Straus and Giroux, plans to release Gruber’s book, tentatively titled “Health Care Reform: What It Is, Why It’s Necessary, How it Works” this fall.
Sadly, if it works to propagandize the masses and change the public's view of this disaster, the joke will be on us.
Stay tuned.

I agree with your statement and believe it is right on the money. I am offended by this idea as these "brainiacs" have the common sense of a dead fruit fly. They don't know anymore about these things than I do and that doesn't say much.

It's only natural that a bunch of clowns would have to try and explain their antics in a comic book!!!!

Can I say this is probably aimed at Chris Matthews' followers.
No question about the target audience I was trying to be civil with the use of "aimed".
I know another bad when I said "target", one of these days I'll hit the mark.
A better idea...

How about this... make a Constitution Comic Book to give to Congress and this administration...
Although, in their version, it would probably end up being the villian.

Ah, the "elites". Now they believe it's just a matter of dumming down the message so that the ignorant masses will understand the glories of Obamacare. Hey Gruber, you ass, the American people do undstand this "progressive" monstrocity which has all the earmarks of communism at its worst. They do understand that it is they who will be working harder to pay through the nose for those who often don't work at all. They understand that Obamacare is a government grab for more power. They understand that it represents a loss of individual freedom. They understand that it is an insult to their intelligence--an intelligence that you "liberals" don't want to admit exists in all free people. This guy Gruber represents all that is disgusting in "liberal" "progressive" elitism--- an ignorant, uneducated, immature, pathetic view of life from the cocktail party crowd of sickening hypocrites. YUK!
NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal" (progressive)

Obama's presidency as a comic book? Rather reflective of real life I would think. So long as the dont get no spider or S on his suit pocket.

This is the same approach that U.S. children's comic books takes.
No more "truth, justice and the Americam way"
No more "G,I, Joe the great American Hero"
No more a "red, white and blue" Wonderman.
Spiderman hates the Tea Party movement.
"Captain Ameria" is 'not' in overseas releases
The left complained when Batman had an American flag as a backdrop in a scene of the last movie.
Archie's Veronica falls for a gay dude.
Batwomen is now a lesbian.
And they have a Muslim Batman like character in Paris.
"DumbAssity of Dope"
I know this is lame....

but as a comic fan, comments like that kinda bother me... This has nothing to do with the story (which is pretty stupid, i admit), but your claims about comics are pretty inaccurate. If you'll allow me to put my geek hat on, and reposition my taped-up glasses (that's no exaggeration! they actually have tape on em!)... *ahem*
1. They dropped the "American way" a long time ago-not for any real political reason, but because it didn't fit his status as a global defender, which he had become after the war. You can disagree with it, but that's not a recent change, and it certainly wasn't due to the current political climate.
2. There still is a GI Joe: The REAL American Hero comic. IDW publishes it (up until recently, Dark Horse was the publisher). They never dropped the slogan "Real American Hero", but it doesn't show up as often because that slogan actually directly referred to the toyline series from 82-the mid 90s.
3. "Wonderman" was a low level marvel character from the 60s-he had a black and red uniform from the start (there may have been a red white and blue uniform at some point, but he was pretty minor... i'd be impressed if anyone noticed one way or another). WonderWOMAN, however, never had a red, white, and blue uniform. She was always red, yellow, and blue (with white stars on her "pants"... that's still the case; and though they often neglect the stars for simplicity sake, it is still a part of her official uniform.
*update* I forgot that they did update her costume just last year; they gave her actual pants and replaced the blue and white stars... However, Wonder Woman has had countless costume changes over the years, and it will undoubtedly revert back to its previous incarnation within a year or so. As is the way of the comic book world.
4. Spiderman was never really a bastion of conservative thought, so that shouldn't be too much of a surprise.
5. Captain America is sold overseas, as he is a crucial part of the Marvel Universe. They may not bother to sell his title book in certain countries because the title doesn't sell well, but he still appears in many other comics under the Marvel banner, so you can't really escape it.
6. Got nothin' on Dark Knight, can't make excuses for the stupid stuff people complain about, but it never bothered me, that's for sure.
7. Don't read Archie... so i dunno... but Archie's been around forever, they've probably tried everything at least once.
8. Batwoman was a minor character from the 60s and 70s, who didn't even appear in comics again until 2006 when, yes, they made her a lesbian. People who complain about this think they changed Batgirl, who has been a major character for a long time... that's not the case-she's still the same Barbara Gordon (though she has been in a wheelchair for 20 years... is that offensive too?)
9. I don't know about the Muslim batman, but Grant Morrison recently did a story arc that introduced a bunch of international Batman variants... that may be where this comes from, but its not a major plot change for the batman universe.
Ok! I'm done, thank you for allowing me to indulge in my nerdiness. You may go about your collective, political businesses
I will not be surprised...

... if this comic book gets printed and distributed (via the US Post Office?) with taxpayer money - and then becomes "required reading" for the masses. Winning The Future, indeed.

When you need to resell a product you know you're in trouble.
When you need to use a comic book to reach your customers you know you're in real trouble

Totally agree with your last point and it demonstrates the continuting failure of the U. S. Dept of Education.
An agency that goes by ED.gov probably isn't on the up and up to begin with. Think Viagra or Cialis.

Why call it Obamacare?
Submitted by hayate1 on Sun, 02/13/2011 - 5:45am.
The bill was actually written by the insurance industry's lobbyists along with those of the drug companies. The bill is great for them but short changed us by taking our the public option and putting in the requirement that everyone must buy insurance.
Sure, Obama signed it into law but he caved on the content.
