Chris Matthews: 'Palin's Talking to People Who Don't Read Newspapers or Watch Serious TV Shows Like Mine'

By Noel Sheppard | February 07, 2011 | 21:53

A  A
Noel Sheppard's picture

It appears Chris Matthews' arrogance knows no bounds.

On Monday's "Hardball," the MSNBCer actually said, "I think [Sarah Palin's] talking to people who don't read newspapers, don't pay attention to serious television broadcasts, whether the Lehrer Hour or anything like it or even this program" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: I want to go back to Beck for a minute, and Palin, because they’re on the same label here. They are on the same, they ought to patent together, she’s trying to get herself patented. It ought to be Palin and Beck. This stuff about these conspiracy theories, she's got the fact that the President of the United States is sitting on these realities. I tell you, I wish I had as much confidence in the State Department as she does, they've got it all figured out who's going to win over there. What’s with the conspiracy theory all the time? Can't she just admit this is tough and they don't seem to know where they're going? That's not a bad critique, and it’s a smart one. I don't think they know where they're going, and I think they do change their minds every two or three days over there. They don't know whether Mubarak is going to last three months, six months, or two weeks, we don’t know. And basically, we’re trying to look at glass, through a glass darkly here. Your thoughts, Shushannah, why is it always the easiest thing to do is to sell a conspiracy theory these days on the Right?

SHUSHANNAH WALSHE, DAILY BEAST: Well, I agree that there are other potential 2012ers which I think that she is have said the president is all over the map. He should be, you know, take a stance, and she did say that, but I think because a lot of people, people that are supporters, the media were looking at what her first comments on Egypt could be, that she should have, as I said before, I think that she should have come out not with a conspiracy, not with what she thinks the president is doing or thinking behind the scenes, but what she would have done if she was in the Oval Office. And I think a lot of her supporters would appreciate that. I think the people that, journalists that cover her and watch her would be interested in that. And I, you know, I think that would have really made her different and distinct from the president especially if she would have come out with a very strong response.

MATTHEWS: Okay, do you know what I think she's doing? Hey Ron…

RON CHRISTIE, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: Yeah.

MATTHEWS: …think about this, because I respect you. Do you know what I think she’s doing? I don't think she is a thoughtful politician. I think she's talking to people who don't read newspapers, don't pay attention to serious television broadcasts, whether the Lehrer Hour or anything like it or even this program, don’t pay attention to anything that’s even in the middle, who don’t have any effort at all to learn anything, believe her when she says they're keeping the truth from us when the people who believe her are making absolutely no effort to find out what the truth is. So they’re willing to believe it’s somebody else’s fault. She’s in an interesting little game she plays with people.

Imagine that. Palin's supporters are basically illiterate nincompoops that don't learn anything and are making absolutely no effort to find out what the truth is by watching folks like Matthews.

It must be quite a thing to believe people are ignorant if they don't watch your show.

As an aside, this is now the sixth day in a row that Matthews attacked his 5PM competitor on Fox News, Glenn Beck.

I'm beginning to think the "Hardball" host is taking after former colleague Keith Olbermann and believe the more he mentions Beck's name, the better his ratings will get.

Of course, Matthews probably thinks the 310 million people that don't watch him are idiots, which is funny for it's the roughly 600,000 nightly "Hardball" viewers that are likely amongst the most poorly informed people in the nation.

We gave up on the LSM ages ago. Chrissy is just blowin' smoke. He knows he and all the other "journalists" and news mumblers are on their last lap. New media has steam rollered them.

Don't ya just love Capitalism? You get to pick and choose what you want not what Chrissy and company want you to have.

Kudos and condolences to Noel. Chris Matthews has become a completely unwatchable exercise in a mental health breakdown. I seriously believe that Matthews has gone over the edge and will never find his way back.

That Noel can still watch and report takes more fortitude than I possess.

But I do offer condolences to Noel and somewhat of a warning.

LOL and Good Luck, Noel.

Submitted by stunned on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 10:27pm.

On his Sunday show he ended the first segment with the panel discussing Obama's mistakes in Egypy last week by replaying John Stewart mocking a 2004 meeting of King Saud of Saudi Arabia with Bush holding hands with the King.  I thought we were ugly Americans incapable of honoring other nations traditions but when Bush held the KIng's hand (traditional in Saudi Arabia) as an EQUAL (only equals hold hands wiith the King) instead of bowing to him like Obama did he was mocked then.

Chrissy's obvious attempt to minimize Obama's mishandling the Egypt crisis by replaying a seven year old video that had NO connection to the previous conversation was truly pathetic and embarassing.  The guy will do anything to cover for Obama.

It's no wonder he has no audience

Submitted by pbthinker on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 10:54pm.

With comments like this one, it's no wonder people don't watch his show.  If he wasn't such a partisan hack, he'd recognize that Sarah Palin has quite a lot of political common sense.  SHe's willing to put her neck on the line by supporting GOProud, I know this isn't the calculating Democrat that Matthews is used to, but it does show that she has her own opinions and is willing to express them.  I can't imagine any consultant telling her to support GOProud, to endorse Nikki Haley for Governor or Christine O'Donnell for the Senate.  We can debate about Christine O'Donnell all night long, the fact is the Democrats put a long of time, effort, and money into defeating her.  There was no candidate that received the full monty treatment of the LSM, the MTV shows, the HBO shows, and the cable news shows.  All of them went after her with a vigor that's usually reserved for Sarah Palin so they must have been scared she'd win.  The Democrats don't waste their time on candidates who can't win.

So, Matthews just doesn't have it any more.  His partisanship has cost him his keen political insight, which I believe he had 10 years ago.  I used to enjoy watching him but just can't do it any more.

Vote Republican - Then you'll only be called a racist one more time.

Palin and Beck

Submitted by vote24 on Tue, 02/08/2011 - 1:27pm.

Palin and Beck are not leaders of the conservative movement because they came along and we all said " hey let's follow them", they came along, and we said " finally someone who is saying what we're thinking". We were already a conservative movement, their actions and words just propelled them to leadership status. The left will never understand that we have been here all along, trying to get along with our adversaries, and they saw that as weakness and tried to bowl us over. So we said, " enough" . Not today. And they see that as violence. And Chris...well, anyone who worships him is simply misinformed, and hiding from reality.

Submitted by the old rang on Tue, 02/08/2011 - 6:47pm.

and spout stupid lies thinking they are smart.

I quit reading papers years ago. The talking head media and the print 'creative fiction' papers have no news worthy of bird cages.

Not one major story, in the last 40 years was properly covered by the media. (Lies and misrepresentations are not proper coverage).

If you want to have a glimmer of what is going on in the world, you have to read on-line media from several countries. Nothing important is properly covered here. (They still think no weapons of mass destuction were found in Iraq, and there was no yellow cake there, either.)

It is not the medias real job, to blatantly lie or make nice to politicians that are trying to destroy the country (by lying, stealing, killing, (directly or indirectly - like cost of food for stupid corn fuel, People are dying, rioting in Egypt, and other places, for that stupidity of ersatz enviromentalism, (socialist engineering) to make the democrats rich, scheme)

The media makes big crocodile tears for nothing, and pisses on our soldiers graves and honor. The NY Times (the old gay bimbo) has gotten so bad, they can't be trusted to get sports scores right, let alone things that mean real life and death to the world.

Better yet... the old bimbo thinks Nazis were on the right wing of government... ignoring that they were, like them, socialists. They don't know how to use a dictionary.
