Bill O'Reilly Blows Up At Alan Colmes, Challenges Sam Donaldson to Come on Fox and Defend Thanking Al Jazeera

By Noel Sheppard | February 02, 2011 | 02:26

As NewsBusters previously reported, Sam Donaldson on Sunday's "This Week" actually thanked the anti-American television network Al Jazeera for what they do in the Middle East.

On Tuesday, Fox News's Bill O'Reilly invited Alan Colmes and Monica Crowley on his program to discuss the matter, and by the end of the segment, O'Reilly was practically screaming at Sean Hannity's former partner (video follows with commentary):

It really is amazing how these guys at Fox put up with Colmes who just seems like nothing but a liberal antagonist.

As for Donaldson, he's never struck me as a man that wouldn't stand up to a challenge.

Although I couldn't identify via LexisNexis Sam ever being on O'Reilly's program, he has commented about the "Factor" host with O'Reilly responding on December 19, 2005:

BILL O'REILLY, HOST: Continuing now with FOX News analyst Newt Gingrich, who's been following the Christmas controversy with some interest. Our pal Sam Donaldson weighed in over the weekend on that.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SAM DONALDSON, THIS WEEK: We're accusing this media of ours of trying to get ratings. Well, Bill O'Reilly wants ratings. He wants to stroke the yahoos, where is Mencken when we need him, in his audience by saying there's a war on Christmas. You can say `Merry Christmas'. You can say `Happy Holidays.' `Happy Hanukah.' Say whatever you want.

The fact that he's simply trying to get ratings on this should not engage us to think that there's a war on Christmas.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

O'REILLY: Yahoos? So -- what do you think's going on here? I mean, it's reached hysteria with The New York Times column yesterday, you know, Donaldson and all these people. It has reached hysteria.

NEWT GINGRICH: Well let me say, first of all, Bill, I don't think I've ever heard a more perfect illustration of the mainstream media's elitism than what Sam Donaldson just said.

It appears there's no love lost between these two making it somewhat unlikely Donaldson would accept the challenge.

Keep your fingers crossed for this would be quite an event.

Just like with Morning Joe, I force myself to listen to people like Colmes to have a heads up on what the left is thinking. It's painful but I feel obliged. Since I trust NB {and the regulars like you} to keep things honest, I may give myself a break and follow your example ;-P

Bill O'Reilly finds lots of things wrong with both sides. I enjoy watching his talking points every night, and they are usually spot. He hates the left even worse than the most right wing ideologue and his Irish temper was at boiling point with that genetically deformed left wing ideolouge and hack artist Colmes.

Sam Donaldson

Submitted by sarge329 on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 3:43am.

" Stroke the yahoos "  is it? Well, that pretty much nails down who and what he is. Just another elitist media snob, whose every thought is so much more scintillating and interesting than ours. Someone whose every word is to be greedily, hungrily inhaled by the ignorant, unwashed masses in the vain hope of becoming even one iota smarter than they are now. Am I being  sarcastic? Well, maybe just a little. As I see it, maybe Mr. Donaldson should leave  ABC for PBS and the McGlaughlin Group, where he can join his fellow elitist analysts. Of course, the ratings would sink even further than they have to this point, it being PBS and all. Their numbers are higher than PMSNBC, which really isn't saying a great deal

The McLaughlin Group

Submitted by amyshulk on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 3:11am.

I like The McLaughlin Group. Again, I find it useful to know where people are coming from/where they intend to go. I also glean tidbits that go deeper than just each sides talking points from it. Like China manipulating their currency -  Pat Buchanan said China is following a trade agreement or something. So once again, we've created our own reality and attempt to blame others for our misfortune!!!

I think the big divide is because the elites have to much disparate info, and since THEY have trouble assimilating that info into anything that doesn't fit their ideology, they think "regular folks" aren't smart enough to look deeper and give weight to valid points.

BOR's frustration with Colmes is basic "So since they aren't ALL bad, you think it's OK to equate them to real news" On the heels of "Mubarak is a dictator, sure, but he's the GOOD kind" since he's a staunch ally. So BOR got angry at Colmes for what he did? That would be Colmes' view, I'm sure.

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

America Needs a Conservative TV News Outlet

Submitted by DemsRFascists on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 4:27am.

I'm kind of surprised Colmes keeps working for Fox.

I ALWAYS have the mute button handy when watching Fox.  One must maintain a constant vigilance on that network (especially on O'Rielly) lest one be subjected to "liberals" spewing their insanity and/or vitriol.  But Mr. Colmes is so hyper-incapable of acknowledging the Truth, it's astounding.  At least Mark Lamont Hill can listen to the conservative viewpoint before he responds with his delusions.  Mr. Colmes seems to be absolutely tortured by anything remotely approaching the Truth.

I'm surprised Bill hasn't blown up on him before.

America needs a conservative television news network.  The abundance of "liberals" (especially abandoning the weekend to Geraldo) on Fox, is just too annoying.

The End For Donaldson, If There Is Justice

Submitted by Boil It Down on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 5:49am.

In defending Donaldson, Colmes has permanently shamed himself and O'Reilly is exactly right to get in his face. I do think O'Reilly should have dialed it back a notch and framed Donaldson as more indefensible and pro-radical. Colmes portraying Al Jazeera as a friend of the Arab people and reporting the news "for" the Arab people is just too absurd. Colmes is in complete denial of all the damage that Al Jazeera has done to the region and foreign relations.

Colmes seems to view folks like Chris Matthews as center and O'Reilly as far right. His perspectives are so skewed in this way that he talks like the majority of the country is the problem, having moved too far to the right. I'd tell Alan that if the majority of the country agrees with a given news anchor, that measure makes the anchor center.

For Donaldson to thank Al Jazreea is to show his appreciation for an entity that tears down the U.S., advocates for the genocide of the Jews and supports the operation of terrorism. If that is Donaldson's position then every Pro American news outlet and anchor needs to denounce him and black-ball him from American journalism in perpetuity.

One of Colmes' oft-used

Submitted by Beukeboom on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 10:56am.

One of Colmes' oft-used strategies is to push the opponent's hot buttons so they end up reacting in an emotional way. When Colmes smirks it's his body language indicator that he's pleased at his provoking. The smirk turns into something else when he's confronted by those who have done their homework, refute Colmes with documented facts, and keeps a level head throughout. That's when you can see Colmes really squirm.

One consistent thing I have

Submitted by Beukeboom on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 10:51am.

One consistent thing I have noticed about Colmes...although I admit he is well-read, he does make claims which are untrue and are easily refuted by facts. Unfortunately many times he is on a panel or with someone who hasn't done their homework well enough to counter Colmes. Each time I have witnessed Colmes opposite of someone who has done their homework and is able to point out Colmes' falsehoods with documented facts, it becomes obvious that Colmes can't handle the truth when it refutes his liberal position. He squirms. He bloviates. He desperately tries to change the subject. He plays the "but conservatives do it, too" card. Colmes has an overabundance of hubris and is a liberal example of "if you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, baffle 'em with 'bravo sierra'."

Actually

Submitted by amyshulk on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 4:46am.

BOR does like to toot his own horn - I've started FF'ing through those parts like I do with MJ when Joe starts bloviating. He usually does it the most when he has Bernie Goldberg on. I used to watch him during the 90's, but when it turned in Clinton and his sex life 24/7, I quit watching until 2007 or so.

BOR also seems to interrupt women more often than men, and anyone who doesn't speak to his narrative gets cut off quick!!! Now, I know it's his show, and he is trying to keep them on point, but he comes off as rude and condescending. I also noticed he gets people on to speak to the more extreme opinions so he can say he IS fair - that is a tactic used by most of the hosts, not peculiar to BOR.

I enjoy THOUGHTFUL analysis, not personal attacks, so I'll listen to those segments, Colmes does NOT provide that.

I watched this segment and

Submitted by Ashrak on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 1:55pm.

I watched this segment and noticed how he got mad at Colmes. That is exactly what Colmes wanted and it is the reason he was smiling so much. Bill's anger got the best of him and he made a mistake as a result.

When Colmes was talking free speech, Bill should have said Oh Really? How about free speech for only one side? That is what AL Jiz is. Yes, Bill taked about balance but he failed miserably to make the real point. Colmes set him up with theperfect pitch and Bill struck out.

Bill made another mistake in the Laura segment afterward. He offered a reason, a example, for why the framers put the Commerce clause into the Constitution. His example about tomato sales acoss state lines was a great one, a perfect one, but he dropped the ball after that as to what the target of regulation was. Indeed, that is the example demonstrating why the Commerce Clause came to be, however, states themselves, their governments, were the target of being subject to the federal regulation - not the people themselves. That is why the Constitution itself says STATES and not PEOPLE......

Saying the framers intended to have the federal government regulate the individual is a non-sequitur. It does not follow. It does not compute. It does not fit.

This was admitted with the prohibition amendment. It was recognized that governent did not have the power to do something and that the Constitution had to be amended to gain it. It was repealed. It's time to admit that so we can move forward.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Different Thoreau

Submitted by Caringwhiteguy on Sun, 02/06/2011 - 6:44pm.

You don't sound like a Walden Thoreau.  You sound more like a Munich beer hall Thoreau.  We'd be well-served were you to spend more time in Bavaria and less time on this site.

Colmes

Figures FNC would feature a liberal who actually has less intellectual gravitas as his former H&C partner.

The more thFNC says FAIR & BALANCED, the more you know it's a bunch of horses***.  Go ahead, be conservative, that's fine, but don't continue to run this nonsense by us.

bsny has any number of Liberal sites to which he can form his adhesion, but he chooses to lurk here.
Maybe his life partner has convinced him he deserves abuse.  Who knows?
But it's a cinch he's not capable of contributing stimulative thought among "us".

Let's hope he doesn't advance to Stage IV 'Us' like you know who.

BS mostly just drops one lame turd and then poof, he's outta here.

'' ...his life partner... ''?

Is it bsny's right or left hand?

Maybe not. If the hand

Submitted by Willis_Leon_Johnson on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 6:53pm.

Maybe not.

If the hand doesn't feel the love and compassion it needs to achieve some level of relief and goes elsewhere looking for Love, is it really cheating?

Biblical proportions, Not

Submitted by Bosco1123 on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 1:51am.

Did someone compare AlJazeera to Fox News?  No way.  BillO is absolutely right about AlJazeera's anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism and lack of opposing voices.  They did provide more information than we otherwise would have had.  Good or bad, we have something to check and verify.

AlJazeera has earned vilification.  Seeing the left as anti-American makes as much sense as seeing the right as anti-American.  Are there moments?  You betcha.  What did the Bible say about the mote, the log and the eye?

Take the mote out of your eye so you can see where to hit Syrius with a log.
