Olbermann Bashes Vietnam Vet's Letter to the Editor About Him

By Noel Sheppard | January 31, 2011 | 00:26

Noel Sheppard's picture

Keith Olbermann must be starving for attention since his surprise exit from MSNBC.

On Sunday, he actually bashed a letter to the editor of the Boston Globe written about him by a Vietnam vet:

The object of Olbermann's disaffection was one Ed Driscoll who was quite pleased by the former "Countdown" host's departure from MSNBC:

I participated in more than 10 combat missions in Vietnam, so I know a mission is not a war. Someone should have told that to Olbermann, as he demonstrated his ignorance by equating the two for years on his show.

He would end by saying it has been so many days since President Bush declared “Mission Accomplished’’ in Iraq. Bush never said that. Olbermann was referring to a sign on an aircraft carrier that said “Mission Accomplished.’’ The president declared an end to major combat operations, and therefore the aircraft carrier was headed home.

In Bush’s speech, he said that much work has yet to be done. The sign was for the brave people who had completed their mission.

Is this really the dumbest letter to the editor of the century, or is Olbermann's kingsize ego so starved for attention that he doesn't feel the slightest inclination to show respect for a veteran voicing his opinion in a forum specifically designed for such a thing?

Honestly, if you had just been paid millions of dollars to stay off television for a few months allowing you to regroup before your next move, would you be commenting on letters to the editor from total strangers, or would you try to find something more worthwhile to do with your time?

On the other hand, since this nonsense was retweeted by 100 of Olbermann's followers, this is probably the exact kind of attention he craves at this stage of his career.

Pretty sad, isn't it?

The guy outta take his millions ( oh jeez.............doesn't that make him a 'target' for the Obama Regime??) and  go somewhere in the world where he can finally figure out how good he has it............or maybe just move to Venezuela or North Korea or Egypt??? I'm sure he can continue his pathetic career over there...............

Keef Odorman, on the other hand has no experience about such matters in anyway shape or form.
The disrespect comes when a man like Ed Driscoll, who has been shot at in defense of the Country
Is disregarded and his point is said to be “dumb” by a guy who never left his mothers basement.
If Keef Odorman could dispute Ed Driscoll’s very valid point, than he should have tried. To resort
To the ad hominem in reference to Ed Driscoll’s letter to the editor to former military like myself
Sounds highly disrespectful.

Olbermann's tweet.

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 01/31/2011 - 10:00am.

If it were up to me, Keith Olbermann would merely be at the head of a parade of media blowhards from both the left and right force-marched into oblivion.  It is way past time political dialogue dominated by tantrum and hysterics gave way to discourse governed by reason and reflection.

But, as was pointed out in a previous post, Olbermann did not demean Mr. Driscoll's military service.  He reacted with a "tweet" to disparaging comments penned by Driscoll, and his response was no more ad hominem than were the accusations in the prospective letter to the editor.

Driscoll does have a valid point regarding the "Mission Accomplished" controversy.  The purpose of the banner was misrepresented and the resulting false narrative was exploited endlessly and cynically by critics of the Iraq war, especially as the early successes were followed by years of unanticipated violence caused by a much stronger than expected insurgency.  As such, either Bush or an administration spokesperson conceded that, in retrospect, the "Mission Accomplished" theme was probably a mistake inasmuch as it sent the wrong message at the wrong time on a very public stage.  In other words, while the grandiose proclamation may--for the reasons you suggest--have been technically accurate, the future political and policy implications of the optics were miscalculated.

Imagine if LBJ had boarded the carrier from which the [ostensibly successful] retaliatory strikes were launched against North Vietnam following the Gulf of Tonkin incident and delivered a triumphal address while standing beneath a colossal "Mission Accomplished" banner.  It would no doubt have become the iconic centerpiece of antiwar rhetoric for the remainder of his presidency.

I know you mean well Uncle Jer.

Submitted by The Vet on Mon, 01/31/2011 - 1:34pm.

I think your LBJ analogy is a little off though. LBJ did not invade North Vietnam, remove the top leader and send others in his government into hiding, and defeat his army. The mission was accomplished and that banner no doubt helped morale immensely. It sure did wonders for my morale and I was retired.

Agreed it was a little off, Vet..

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 01/31/2011 - 1:55pm.

and I started to include a qualifier such as "it's not a perfect analogy, but...."

The point, though, was to follow up on the same distinction between "war" and "mission" that Driscoll himself had employed in his letter to the editor.

And, by his definition of the term--which I don't dispute--the Gulf of Tonkin retailiatory raid would have likewise qualified as a "mission accomplished".

But, you are correct in that what had been achieved in Iraq at the time of Bush's carrier appearance dwarfed the objectives fulfilled by the limited air strikes in Vietnam.

If I was to say your well thought-out post was the dumbest post of the century, that by definition is an ad hominem argument. Your equation of the two apposing veiws are not valid. Ed Driscoll did not resort to an ad hominem attack of the former MSNBC host.

My post stated the former MSNBC host demeaned the man, not his idea which is the essence of the definition of ad hominem. On the other hand, Ed Driscoll's letter to the editor took the former MSNBC host to task for his idea's.

So I must repectffuly disagree with you and I stand by my post.

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 01/31/2011 - 6:59pm.

Anyone who possesses a clear grasp of what does or does not constitute ad hominem argumentation in any and all given circumstances is well ahead of me.  But please note that even Noel points out earlier in the thread that Olbermann doesn't criticize the "vet" but rather the vet's "letter".  On the other hand, Driscoll charges that Olbermann "demonstrated his ignorance..." which seems to me to be more directly aimed at Olbermann personally rather than his ideas.  Furthermore, Driscoll strongly implies that because he is a combat veteran [while Olbermann is not] the latter's views on the issue are therefore rendered invalid.

However, it is also true that Olbermann doesn't explicitly address, much less refute, the arguments of Driscoll.  Instead he merely tweets a sweeping denouncement of the letter.  As such, that fact alone might flag it as ad hominem.

In conclusion, I'm not sure whether I disagree or agree with you, but in either case it is done with respect.

Olbermann created an illusion of intellectualism for his fans by rarely (if ever) featuring guests who were politically opposed to his worldview and thus challenge his "facts."  His chief foil was Fox News, and when he so deemed, he would feature a clip from a Fox show (or a quote) -- often out of context -- and rip in to it from the sanctuary of his studio.

But those on this site who have followed his diatribes for years know that he isn't much deeper than people like Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer.

Olbermann's appeal to his fans was his theatrics, like throwing his papers across the stage to punctuate his misogynous rants against conservative women.  He's an entertainer, not a journalist.

Keith is a court jester.

Submitted by Ashrak on Mon, 01/31/2011 - 10:29am.

Most sane people write a letter to the editor in response to one they find disagreeable -especially when one is directed at them personally. They commence to explaining why they hold a different position and offer facts in support of their own.

Mr. Olberman no longer has a special stage from which to shout people down and belittle those he disagrees with. He has been reduced to standing among the "little people", the "unwashed masses" and I submit that he is going to do something stupid, well more stupid than usual. He will not adjust well, his ego will not allow it.

In fact, he may well present a danger to the the community as a result of his ouster and going postal is not out of the question. The left always demands mental health studies when it comes to gun owners. Olberman may be that next Tucson Jared - so by his own logic he must have his rights revoked, both First and Second Amendments, he must be examined by pshycological professionals and cleared as not nuts.

He is now stalking someone, via twitter, who simply made a prefectly valid point about "missions" and "campaigns". Olberman very well could be a danger to society, a menace, and we simply must connect the dots. He might go postal so maybe a mandatory 72 hour lock up is in order to ensure his own safety and the safety of those around him.

Leftist logic, rather the lack of it, will finally be rebuffed when it is applied to them directly.

At first, I thought it best to just ignore Keith, but upon reflection, I am thankful that NB did this article and I am inspired to write my own LTE about Keith. Giving him the treatment he gave Sarah Palin would serve him the justice he so deserves. And the return fire will be an easier task than the one he had - all one ned do is tell the straight trugh about him and it speaks for itself.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.
