Palin and Bachmann Nitpicker Chris Matthews Says Panama Canal Is In Egypt

By Noel Sheppard | January 29, 2011 | 18:18

Noel Sheppard's picture

As NewsBusters has been reporting almost ad nauseam, Chris Matthews spent much of last week mercilessly lambasting Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann with cherry-picked and distorted quotes far afield of their intended meaning.

On Friday, the “Hardball” host got a touch of instant karma when he said the Panama Canal is in Egypt (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: You know, the great thing about Egypt is it’s its own country. It was always there before there was an America or Britain or anything, there has been an Egypt. It’s like China. It’s a real country. It wasn’t just carved off the map or out of the map by the Europeans, like so many African and third world countries have.

It’s got a real rooted history. It’s not just an Arab country. It was a country long before it was an Arab country -- long before Islam, there was an Egypt. Will it see itself in this moment of chaos as joining a greater Islamic world or is holding to its national identity?

AMB. MARC GINSBERG, FMR. U.S. AMBASSADOR TO MOROCCO (via telephone)GINSBERG: There’s no doubt that the Egyptians view themselves as the center of culture in the Arab and the Muslim world and the center of Islamic learning. I studied there. I used to take classes at the al-Azhar University, which is considered to be the pre-eminent Islamic institution in the Muslim world, Chris.

MATTHEWS: Right.

GINSBERG: And the fact is that there’s enormous pride going back to the history of the pharaohs. The Egyptians embrace their ancient culture. But they’re very dissatisfied with their current regime.

MATTHEWS: Well, let me ask you about the prospects we’re looking at as an American. We’re looking at the map of the world right now and where Egypt sits in the world. It’s so strategically located. It has, of course, the Nile River. It has, of course, the Panama Canal.

Someone must have spoken in Matthews’ earplug, for he corrected himself moments later:

MATTHEWS: It is the largest and only true partner even if it’s a cold peace with Israel. It is, in fact, the key to whatever Middle East peace we’re able to arrange in our lifetime. It always tends to support the moderate forces in - the Suez Canal. It has always supported the moderate forces in that region.

In fairness, I know full well that Matthews is aware of what countries these respective canals reside in.

This was a mistake. People make them.

The problem is that folks like Matthews, who so desperately hate Palin and Bachmann, are hanging on their every utterance looking to pounce on anything that can be twisted and misconstrued to embarrass and defame these conservative women.

As we demonstrated last week, this is even when the comments aren’t nearly as out of line as people like Matthews claim.

Contrary to the prevailing liberal meme, Bachmann did not state last Saturday that the Founding Fathers ended slavery before the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil War.

Unlike what Matthews reported Thursday, Palin did not say the Russians beat us in the Space Race. Even the perilously liberal Tommy Christopher admitted as much Saturday.

Compounding matters further is folks like Matthews give Democrats a pass when they commit faux pas. Consider all the gaffes and blunders made by candidates Barack Obama and Joe Biden that went completely uncovered during the 2008 campaign.

What Americans have painfully learned in recent years is that when people on the Left err, so-called journalists consider them only human. But when conservatives are caught even coming close to making a slip of the tongue, they’re unfit for office.

With this in mind, Matthews better be darned careful, for if he’s going to demand perfection from conservatives, we’re going to demand it of him.

What's good for conservative geese should be good for liberal gander.

(H/T NB reader Miles Taylor)

Matthews Corrected Himself

Submitted by Susanmg on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 8:45pm.

There is the difference. Palin has NEVER admitted an error. Her writers make her look like a fool, and she never bothers to fact check what they out in front of her. Bachmann too. Matthews made a slip of the tongue (how often have you said "Suez Canal" in the past 5 years? and then made it right. Palin and Bachmann, for rich women who could certainly afford the brightest speechwriters around, continue to rewrite history, then make excuses and blame the media for catching their errors. Did Matthews blame anyone? No, and because he fixed it, it is not the issue you want to make of it. But then, the right is all about lying, covering up, and blame. Never about affirmative statements (hey, let's turn that one into cuss words, that will get to the rednecks who send us cash!) or affirmative ideas, being kind, or showing compassion. From  Bush's tepid reaction to Katrina and willingness to torture other human beings, to Palin's proudly stated and successful  crosshairs map and Bachman's wanting her folks 'armed and dangerous," there is no humanity left on the right. Since so many Americans are in trouble right now, this lack of ideas and heart will cost them big time in 2012. With their bravado and superiority, when they fail to deliver, good luck selling the people again on how much  better they are. As they are so find of saying, "elections are easy, governing takes work." So instead of the bickering, get to work.

Bush is no longer President.  Therefore, you can let up on the Bush bashing, because that's about all a little snotnose cretin like you has.  Do the world a favor and go get a hairdo and be quiet.  Oh, one more thing for you to ponder, Susie.  Obama voted "present" 130 times in the Illinois State Senate.  No much to say for a guy who is definitely not a leader by any measuring stick.  Get outta here, Susie.

Shopworn Susie

Submitted by Thunder Lizard on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 9:46pm.

Susie your points are all shopworn.  They've been dissected and proven wrong many, many times on this site and others.  "Crosshairs on a map" "enemy territory" all done by the Democrats BEFORE the Tea Party ever exisited.  "Armed and dangerous" when read in context of Bachmann's WHOLE statement is clearly a metaphor, but it is easy for folks like you to parse and twist words.

But then you got yourself so ratcheted up you missed even the whole point of the article.   Again, you folks have to yelp about Bush and Katrina because you can't deal with the present.  It isn't that Matthews made a mistake of misspoke.  And he really didn't correct himself did he?  He just said Suez the next time.  In order to correct himself, he would have said, "I misspoke I meant Suez Canal."   The issue is Matthews EXCORIATES others for misspeaking, and uses it as a political club to imply people are idiots.  That was the point

"hey, let's turn that one into cuss words, that will get to the rednecks who send us cash!"  Susie, you obviously read from your leftist talking points here, but didn't you hear the president's message about civility?  Where's your affirmative ideas, kindness and compassion in this post?  This is pretty snarky talk and I'm not a "redneck" but that's your clear implication.

Like I've said before, I'm sure I must have heard some of the earliest rock and roll when I was a babe in my crib in 1956. I've always loved the Everly Brothers type of stuff. Jeez Ninjie - you're KILLING me!!! I liked that song.........especially the 'brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr' between the verses!!! Go and listen to the 'punk/echo' of Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps......or the breathless intensity of any Little Richard record..........or the 'dirty' sound of Link Wray in 'Rumble'. Hell, I even poked a hole in my amplifier speaker back in high school to get that thick, gritty sound!!! My friends thought I was nuts. And I had all of the Everly Brothers 45's on Cadence Records - lavender label. I still play some Everly's with a couple of my friends, and it sounds good.

I don't think that modern studios can replicate those sounds - it's all too technical and advanced these days - and they don't seem to be able to capture that 'live' sound that was prevalent back in the early days of recording.........plus, in those days, the artists HAD to be able to deliver the goods, which doesn't seem to be a prerequisite these days,  since the technology can make anyone sound as good as they need to be.

Modern Day Egypt

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 8:56pm.

Mathews is abysmally ignorant of the history of modern day Egypt.  Of course, the Nile delta region has a rich cultural history that should be revered by modern day Egyptians.  But the current country of Egypt was created in the 1920s by those evil "Europeans" from Great Britian, because of the defeat suffered by the Ottoman Empire in World War One.

I can understand how a stupid, liberal wimp like Chrissie Mathews could put the Panama Canal in Egypt.  After all, this is a guy who seems to feel guilty about being a white person whenever  he discusses Obama.  I pity the woman who has to depend on Mathews to protect her from a knife wielding thug.  He is the walking version of a pink taco.

cajun links up info that blasts the part of susie's post referencing "get to work" as a sneer at Republicans, out the door, up the street, and into a commercial dumpster.

The most incredibly damning evidence showing that a lib like susie is a robo-droid, as opposed to being a thinker, is the length of time she has been around.

Over a year, lurking and loitering, and then she posts liberal gar-bazzh, assuming, apparently, that it will be received as gospel.

Some of our conservatives swatted her BS away like she was an annoying mosquito.

Matthews mixed up the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal. Yes. He made a simple mistake. Michele Bachmann said that the founding fathers helped end slavery, that was not a simple mistake. Sarah Palin said that the launch of Sputnik in 1957 collapsed the USSR, that was not a simple mistake. Bachmann and Palin are just truly ignorant. Why don't they know elementary school history? Matthews mixing up the names of the two most famous canals in the world is not a big deal. These two women, knowing less American history than my 11 year old daughter is a really BIG deal.

How did we beat a country that was ahead of us in the space race most of the time? Maybe because we had more money? How you could think a country that spent billions on the space race "didn't really try" is beyond me.  Think spending billions on a space program and not on your country could be a contributing factor to the downfall of said country??

Actually, the Russians DID reach the moon far ahead of the US.  They just never wasted their time and effort on a manned landing.  They sent probes instead.  They even had the first LIVE television view of the lunar surface thanks to the first robotic rover ever to sample the surface of a non-terrestrial body, affectionately known as the "tank," which, indecently, traveled over 35 kilometers, which is the greatest distance of ANY non-terrestrial rover to date.

  • The Soviet Lunar program had 20 successful missions to the Moon and achieved a number of notable lunar "firsts": first probe to impact the Moon, first flyby and image of the lunar farside, first soft landing, first lunar orbiter, and the first circumlunar probe to return to Earth. The two successful series of Soviet probes were the Luna (24 lunar missions) and the Zond (5 lunar missions).

"It wasn’t just carved off the map or out of the map by the Europeans, like so many African and third world countries have."

Idiot.  It was under British Imperial rule for a long time...did Chrissy Boy ever hear of the Battle of El Alemein?  What does he think the British Army was doing there exactly?  Ever see Gallipoli, Chris?  In particular the scenes where the Australians were training in Egypt and playing on the Pyramids?.  Egypt used to extend into what is now northern Sudan.  Its current borders were defined by the European Imperial powers just as every other border (except maybe Madagascar-an island) in Africa was.

Also, this moron was looking at an electoral map about four years ago and Chris had difficulty in naming several of the western states.

But this is what passes for intellectualism amongst the Libtards and their elite.  They simply make up stuff as they go along, rewrite history and so on, and proclaim how knowledgeable they are.  Their minions are appallingly clueless when it comes to any real knowledge about anything so they are themselves unaware.  To them being "well-read" means reading tripe written by other Libtards.
