Chris Matthews Blames Egypt Riots on George W. Bush and Iraq War

By Noel Sheppard | January 29, 2011 | 13:17

Noel Sheppard's picture

It's a metaphysical certitude that whenever anything happens in the Middle East, the media will quickly blame former President George W. Bush and the war in Iraq.

Not missing the opportunity to do so, Chris Matthews began the 5PM installment of "Hardball" Friday connecting the riots in Egypt to a man that has been out of office for two years (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Trouble on the Nile.

Let`s play HARDBALL.

Good evening. I`m Chris Matthews in Washington.

Leading off tonight: Unrest in Egypt. Proving the Iraq war wasn`t needed, these protests in Egypt, as well as in Yemen and Tunisia, are all aimed at dictators supported by the U.S. The demonstrations have not yet turned anti-American, but they could. These are the events the Bush administration hoped to encourage by lying about weapons of mass destruction and invading Iraq. A live report from Richard Engel at the scene coming up. And we`ll stay on this story throughout the hour as events warrant.

Riots and a potential revolution in Egypt prove the Iraq war wasn't needed?

How does one come to that conclusion? Who on Matthews' staff decided that the perfect way to lead off Friday's program was by linking the unrest in Egypt to Bush and Iraq?

Didn't these folks learn anything from their rush to judgment over this month's shootings in Tucson?

This seems especially important as Matthews' guest through much of the program - NBC's Richard Engel reporting from Cairo - didn't say anything about these riots being in any way related to Iraq, anti-Americanism, or Bush.

From what Engel could tell, this is all about the high poverty and unemployment rates in Egypt along with continued disgust with the corruption of the government.

Matthews himself said, "The demonstrations have not yet turned anti-American."

So why suggest they are or will? Are viewers to believe that if Saddam Hussein was still in power in Iraq, folks in Egypt would be happy with the corruption in their country as well as the high unemployment and poverty?

Beyond this, Egypt is and has been a strong ally of the United States and plays a pivotal role in keeping peace in the region as a result of its treaty with Israel. Why would Bush or any President want to see a revolution in this country that could tremendously destabilize this entire part of the world sending oil prices to all-time highs and undermining the economy?

As it turned out, Matthews never got to answer such a question or elaborate on his absurd opening as breaking events out of Egypt, including an address by President Hosni Mubarak, dominated the entire hour.

But one has to wonder what if anything the folks at MSNBC learned from their rush to judgment when they incorrectly blamed the Tucson shootings on conservatives.

Are these people capable of toning down their own rhetoric and avoiding jumping the accusation shark every time news breaks, or is advancing their agenda the only thing that matters and all this civility talk was just a smokescreen to silence the Right?

Maybe more importantly, has Matthews foreshadowed what we should expect from so-called journalists in the coming days and that despite all evidence to the contrary, whatever happens in Egypt is going to be blamed on Bush?

Stay tuned.

Nobody in their right mind (read: conservative to moderate) ever takes Tingles seriously.  The man has proven time and time and time again that he is a few fries short of a Happy Meal.  This man's picture should show up in dictionaries for the terms, "Simpleton," "Idiot," and "Bloviate."

No one...and I mean NO ONE...who ever worked in the Carter Administration should be taken seriously on the world stage.  And the same should go for those foolish enough to serve in the Obumbler Regime come 2013.

This man makes my head hurt.  I always try to find the best in everyone, but with Tingles, I am stumped. There is nothing of value there.

I would call out "Full body" Thrills. To show how rediculous his talking point is, I would proceed to blame this whole Egypt mess on Sargent Shriver and The Peace Corpse-men! Then explain that my hypothesis lies with the notion that pseudo-men like "Full Body" Thrills only joined the Peace Corpse because they were too afraid to go to war in Vietnam, so they wanted to do their drugs and drink and dance with the Bushmen in Africa.

The list of things they could bounce Obama out of office for is growing longer by the day.

I mentioned on the OT that the House should drop everything and start working to find out who Obama really is (while there is still time to), and that article is what prompted me to say that. But it is far from the only reason.

Obama has been on the wrong side in every single interaction with our allies.

And his actions regarding Honduras were an abomination as far as I am concerned. American presidents do not insist communist dictators be restored to power, especially when the people have thrown them out.

Agree about the House.  People should be writing/emailing/calling their congress critter to do that.  Also on the OT, dscott mentions that it's easier to prove incompetence than deliberate acts, but even so, this madman must be stopped.  He really is out of control and people still think it's incompetence!  Interesting that Biden was siding(there's a rhyme!) with Muburak, that can't help matters between him and DuhOne.

I saw on Fox News earlier that people in this country were showing solidarity with the people of Egypt, but do they even realize the Muslim brotherhood's involvement?   Believe me, I appreciate the plight of the poor people, but those unholy bastards are taking cold advantage of them and as soon as they get their people in power(God forbid!), those same poor people are gonna be tossed out like so much trash with a hearty "Thank ya!  See ya!"

Damn, this is one of the ugliest situations in a long while since WW2 and it's just getting started.  I'm talking about the far reaching repercussions from this.

No, no. He may be right on this one. I think I read something about Bush working on creating a public uprising in the middle east- first in Tunisia, followed by countries like Yemen and, I think, Egypt (yeah, it was Egypt)- right after he planned the 9/11 attack.

What we missed due to the breaking news interuptions was not Richard Engle elaborating, but a serious discussion of the matter with his next guests: Rosie O'Donell and Ed Asner.

The real question remains: When does Sarah Palin get blamed for this? Followed by an exposé entitled: Uprising in Egypt- Is this the Future for America's Tea Party?

This is the sad thing about Egypt

Submitted by djwolf12 on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 1:51pm.

Richard Engel's reporting was sympathetic to The Muslim Brotherhood. Engel joyously boasted about how he had been in the "loop" of Hamas and other terrorist cliques, including the Muslim Brotherhood. This boasting slanted the coverage towards the theme that Egyptians want socialism, which carried through the dialogue. My question is this: If the media is so focused on civility in public discourse, why did they NOT condemn the protesters that were carrying machine guns at this so-called "peaceful protest"?

It's not easy to overthrow a government

Submitted by nkviking75 on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 3:15pm.

Matthews apparenltly thinks it's easy to overthrow a government.  The idiot has obviously forgotten that there was a public uprising in Iraq shortly after the first Gulf war, and that Saddam ruthlessly crushed it.  If I'm not mistaken, he used poison gas (a WMD!) to do it.  There have also been uprisings in Iran, but A-jad is still in power.

Chrissy just has his panties up in a bunch

Submitted by Ashrak on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 4:09pm.

As I said on a thread around here somewhere when he said this, Mathews is trying to turn credit into blame. He is trying to say that Iraqis could have done this all on their own, without our help, and that this turn of events is evidence of that.

Chrissy ignores the fact that Iraqis did try to do this in 1991 and got crushed by a wicked, wicked man when they tried.  He ignores that no fly zones came a result of that. Of course, he also ignores that the then developed policy of "containment" became part of Osama's declarations of war. But I digress.

Mathews does not want to admit that Egyptians are feeling emboldened to do this because Iraqis are experiencing change they can believe in. The last thing he wants to see is an interview of Egyptians saying that kind of thing. He fears a statement like "we see change in Iraq and want similar change here".

Bush said Iraq would seed a growth of the desire for democratic principles in government in that part of the world  - and he was right about that. Mathews is trying to head that idea off at the past. He doesn't care about Egypt or the people there. All he cares about is trying to protect his leftist bent - at all costs.

Egyptians aren't anti American in this move. It has nothing to do with our Allied status either. I don't even believe that this is centered or organized by the muslim brotherhood. Though Ayman Al Zawahiri and crew way well try to benefit from the happenings, they will fail  - because they too would try to shut down the internet  - and that pissed off Egyptians more than anything else. Islamic Zealots are losing, badly.

I may be seen as a minority view in these parts, and that's OK, but I am happy to see this happening in Egypt (Caveat - minus the violence).  Getting Egypt off the American taxpayers back and ending the jizyah Carter started to buy dhimmi status for Israel is a days gone by tool and one we should reject today. Enough is Enough. Same goes for Jordan.

I predict that more dominoes will fall. In the long run, this is a good thing. Various societies throughout the Muslim world standing up for themselves removes the ability to blame the USA for propping up dictators and the leftist meme that we are to blame for their problems.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Moving goalposts in MSNBC's specialty...

Submitted by DaveInNM on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 4:37pm.

If things end up well in Egypt, no matter who's in charge or what form of government results from all this, all credit will go to Obama and his awesome skills as a world leader...

If it all goes to shit, it'll be Bush's fault for starting things up to begin with.

The funny thing about Iraq is that the vast majority of intelligence services around the world, the vast majority of Congress, and pretty much everyone watching Saddam's actions, thought he had WMD's.

In fact, he did.  I'm a disabled vet who got a blood infection at the VA hospital that carries with it a 50% mortality rate.  It's a form of acinitobacter that only responds to ONE antibiotic.  Where did it come from?  It first showed up in the military hospitals from out wounded troops wounded in Iraq, then it moved into the VA system, and is now working it's way into the civilian hospital system.

Sure seems like a biological agent that was weaponized to me...

Oh, but wait...  BUSH, (and Bush alone,) lied about WMD's in Iraq, and all those other countries, previous Presidents, Congress critters that get intelligence briefings, were just pawns to his brilliant deciet!  The fact that BOTH sides of Congress overwhelmingly voted to approve the invasion of Iraq is just something to be forgotten.  It was ALL that lying Bush.

And of course, it's just inconvenient as hell that as we were rolling across the border into Iraq, convoys of trucks were rolling from Iraq into Syria carrying...  ??? so we better no mention anything about THAT!  In the first Gulf War, Saddam tried to send his Air Force to Iran for safe keeping, but they decided to just keep all those planes.  It's impossible that he could have been doing the same thing again, except this time with a trusted, fellow Baath party controlled, state, after all.

Again, it's amazing the hoops the left will jump through.  Shouldn't they be cheering a popular uprising fighting for a democracy against a dictator?  Instead, it's "blame Bush" for the moment, but if the rebellion succeeds and a Muslim theocracy doesn't end up taking hold, they'll just go silent on that and hope people forget as they shift credit to Obama.

Chris Matthews is dissembling

Submitted by dscott on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 4:48pm.

Chris Matthews is dissembling for the Obama Administration.  Chrissy knows full well that the Obama Admin since taking office has worked with opponents of Egypt's lawful government and instigated the chaos what we see now.    The Obama Administration has been interferring in the internal affairs of sovereign country that is our ally.  It's one thing to encourage a dictator to liberalize their political workings, it's quite another to forment an overthrow of that government.

I call upon Congress to begin investigations into the Obama Administration for this potential violation of the Neutrality Act.  Egypt was NOT an enemy of the US but in fact a supporter of our interests in the ME.  It is unlawful to instigate regime change in a country that is NOT our enemy.  If so found that Obama condoned and advanced this plot to destabilize Egypt he must be IMPEACHED.  No one is above the LAW, not even Barack Obama.  Furthermore, who in Congress was consulted with regarding this regime change operation????  Was the Foreign Intelligence Committee notified of this action?

If this is true, then it's

Submitted by Slyrr on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 6:53pm.

If this is true, then it's horrible news, but no less than one could expect from Obama.  The man seems to have been groomed from youth to be a divider and a destroyer.  He dandled at the knee of Jeremiah Wright for 20 years - an anti-american hatemonger.  He was, and to this day is still friends with a terrorist and a murderer who bombed the Pentagon.

Over and over again, we have heard Obama say how much he hates this country, seen him apologize for the existence of America at every stop on his taxpayer funded world luxury tours.  We have seen him throwing himself at the feet of tyrants, dictators, thugs and despots who are the avowed enemies of America.  We have seen him treat our allies like dirt, sending back their gifts, making them walk out the back door among garbage cans.

We knew he would be a disgrace as soon as he launched his campaign.  We knew who he was, and what he was.  The  media knew who and what he was.  But because they were so desperate to have a Democrat win after the Bush years, they wilfully lied for him.  Now its too late for our media.  In directly endorsing Obama, they have tied themselves to his policies and his credibility.  If he falls, the media falls with him - because they promoted him and aided in his election win.

If Obama is found guilty in this regard, the media is guilty with him.  They already lost the trust of conservatives.  If this plays out as you've described, no one else will trust them either.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

What else could one expect from a network that was built for the sole and express purpose of being the Democrat party's propaganda channel?

Everything bad that happens was Bush's fault.  Everything good that happens was done personally by Obama to give Matthews thrills in his pants.

He'd eat raw sewage on his show to please his Democrat puppet-masters and say it was ice cream if they told him to.

MSNBC has no hope, no future.   If the Democrat party wasn't funneling taxpayer money into this dead horse to keep it propped up and looking alive, it would have disappeared years ago.  It's a crime what the Democrats have done in setting this channel up to cover up their lies.  I eagerly await the day when national outrage against them becomes so strong that they are shut down once and for all.

Matthews is losing it.  He's always been on the edge of nuts, but lately, it appears he's rolling in finely chopped assortment of Planters.

You have got to be kidding!

Submitted by hayate1 on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 9:22pm.

The analysis of Matthews' statements above shows a lack of understanding of and insight into the big picture in the middle-east vis-a-vis our government's strategies/policies since desert storm.  one component of said strategies, a strategy which even Bush #2 finally fell back on once his other official rationals for invading iraq were discredited, was to work to eliminate dictators we didnt like and back ones we do like.  Intrinsic to that position was the strategy used to get rid of saddam.

The strategy that Bush, Clinton and then Bush used was designed to create circumstances in iraq that would compel people to rise up and overthrow Saddam.  We attempted to create widespread discontent with Saddam by using blockades, political isolation, severely limiting the amount of food and medical supplies iraq could import, and otherwise making the life of the average iraqi miserable.  we then attempted to communicate that everything would get better if saddam wasnt in charge.  we even encouraged Saddam's generals to stage a coup.  The idea, we figured, was that  once the people had suffered enough they would rise up and eliminate the cause of their pain, saddam. (never mind that it was mostly us causing their pain but hey, we are the good guys) Of course this strategy was underpinned by the assumption that iraqis wanted freedom and democracy in the first place and they just needed a catalyst to get them out of their shells.  so we starved them, let thousands of children die of curable disease and slowly impoverished a once prosperous nation, until, in our final manifestation of this strategy, we invaded. To liberate the iraqi people from the actions of a brutal dictator and seed freedom in the middle east

It didnt work. At least in creating the functioning democracy we hoped for.  it did work in destroying large swaths of that nations infrastructure, displacing more than a million people in addition to the deaths of hundreds of thousands.

Now here is Egypt.  and they are doing it all by themselves, without the democratic gift of  destruction and death from us.  And look, they are rising up against a staunch and long term american ally and friend, Hosni Mubarak.  This proves clearly that if people want freedom they will fight for it.  it also proves that our desire for people to have freedom doesnt follow that those people want it.  If our goal in iraq was to liberate and create democracy, it didnt work.

So, yes what bush and the others wanted to happen in iraq didnt happen while it is happening in egypt without our help.  logically then, if the official rational is to be believed, we didnt need to go into iraq to liberate people and allow democracy to flourish bc we see that if the people want it they will take it all by themselves.

As to the matthews statement that the protests havent turned anti american yet, it seems clear that he is making that statement assuming those listening know that the dictator the people of egypt are attempting to overthrow is a staunch ally of America and has done our bidding many times. he also assumes that viewers are aware of the fact that there is a lot of anti american sentiment in the middle east stemming from our invasion and unqualified support of Israel.

What he says is logical. does understanding where he is coming from and what he says mean that he is right?  no, but what he says is supported by the data and logical.  Is that always the case?  nope., My humble opinion is that when what anyone says is clearly false, not supported by the data , partial truth used to manipulate or otherwise avoiding the issue they should be called out on it.  I think that the commentators at Fox are the worst but they are not alone.  Oh yea, one last thought.  every person is entitled to their own opinion but not their own facts.

Chris Matthews, Foreign Events Expert

Submitted by Chris Norman on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 10:21pm.

So Matthews has distilled the Egyptian crisis down to the most important core question: can he make it a partisan political issue to bash Republicans? Matthews' program is such a valuable resource for accurate analysis of world events. From him we learn that every momentous occurence that negatively affects peace, stability, and American interests is Bush's fault.

Is Savage Still Broadcasting?

Submitted by Chris Norman on Sat, 01/29/2011 - 11:08pm.

That's the first time I've heard Savage's name mentioned in about three years. I was wondering the other day what became of him. The liberal hit squads don't even bring him up any longer when pointing out conservative "hate speech". Before they got him fired from MSNBC (how did he ever get on there?), he was their Public Conservative Enemy #2 or #3. The local ABQ radio station dropped his show about three years ago, I'd guess.

Not "Sexy" Enough For MSM

Submitted by Boil It Down on Sun, 01/30/2011 - 3:27am.

The story is never intriguing enough or complete for the MSM without the "blame-accuse-ridicule-hate" the opposition dig. If they can't squeeze their daily talking points into a story it's not worth telling. This, of course, goes double for Matthews. They need to appeal to their limited following. I'm sure they receive high praise from their highly, yet easily, entertained audience that tunes in for that sort of thing.

Yes. Bush did cause this . . . .

Submitted by Gat New York on Sun, 01/30/2011 - 11:10am.

When we invaded Iraq I felt and wrote at that time that there would be a long-term primary benefit which would be to completely change the geo-politics of the Middle East. That would be the only way to get rid of radical Islam and bring peace the the region.

Why? As long as the current regimes even in countries friendly to us remained in place then radical Islam would never be removed, would continue to grow, and Israel would bever have peace. It is much the same way Nixon and Kissenger opened up and exposed to the people of communist bloc western ideals and economic opportunities we enjoyed which began the disintigration of the USSR.

The regime change in Iraq brought in the highly visible free elections, liberation of groups of Muslims, and freedom. That quickly sprread to other countries in thr region and through social media young people saw that as their future. They saw it in Iran (which Obama did not support) and they see that in Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan.

The seeds of this is not in radical Islam but in the symbolism of Iraq.

In Iran we saw the incredible incompetence of Obama in allowing the regime to suppress what should have been an overthrown of the ruling theocracy. In Egypt we can only hope that there is a better level of competence than there was with the Iranian revolt.

The Iranian and this revolt would not have occurred had there not been an Iraq and the famous election with purple fingers.

Good grief

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 01/30/2011 - 5:36pm.

Some of the comments on there would be laughable if the situation weren't so serious.  many were calling on the Chairman to do the "right thing" and not let ElBaradei take over, especially one called Pasadena Phil, who's got the right ideas, but doesn't seem to realize that the Chairman is incapable idealogically speaking of doing those things.

But access to all those military weapons that Egypt has.......oh my dear lord, this is getting worse by the day.  If those islamists get a hold of them, any bases and camps and US interests over there will be immediate targets once they learn how to use them.  It's too bad we don't put failsafes in our stuff that we sell to prevent the enemy from being able to use them.

Super duper Spammer Alert*

Submitted by cajun2 on Fri, 02/04/2011 - 3:08pm.

Having read part of this screed T- hamas I have several questions. Are you saying that your beloved Mohammed was a Catholic before he invented Islam? Since he didnt agree with the "morals" of the church, is that why in Islam it is acceptable to have sex with children and is that the reason your people rejected Christianity? And since the Crusades have been over for quite some time, why is it your people continue to wage war not just on infidels and Christians but you tend to kill your own? The  riots in the middle east today are an example of those evil in your religion willing to sacrifice the lives of your own to further their agenda. Doesnt seem to me that Islam has a value of human life.

Not sure if you understand the influence of the Vatican. They dont actually have governing power of the soverignty of nations, only their followers which makes them volunteers not slaves.Unlike your religious leaders who actually rule over the heads of government leaders in your countries. It is called Theocracy T-hamas.And I understand why you call the Pope a dog, that is the highest insult to a mooslim right? I love dogs, they are so loyal, please find another way to insult us infidels.

Evil lives among us of course, Christ warned us of this, like your evil  Mohammed. There are priests that are evil and have abused children but not nearly as numerous as the leaders of your religion who daily stone women, enslave children for sex, and throw infants in the garbage dumps. And this 1000 yr old practice continues today.

Evil lives among us and I think this little spam of yours is one example that evil is spreading.
