Matthews Ties Tea Partiers to 'Nazi Stuff' Moments After Bashing Beck for 'Violent Rhetoric'

By Noel Sheppard | January 24, 2011 | 22:21

Noel Sheppard's picture

There are times it seems the folks at MSNBC are so driven by their liberal agenda that they're missing their own hypocrisy even when it happens on the same show separated by mere minutes.

Take for example Chris Matthews who moments after a lengthy segment Monday complaining about Glenn Beck and the so-called "violent rhetoric of the Right" ironically tied Tea Party members to "Nazi stuff" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Fire on the right. Let’s play HARDBALL.

Good evening. I’m Chris Matthews in Washington. Leading off tonight: Glenn Beck shoots off his mouth. Today Jared Loughner pled not guilty. So has the right wing to the charge it promotes trouble with its endless rants about guns and hatred of government. Take Glenn Beck -- please. He targets what he calls radicals in Washington who, quote, "believe in communism," and "you’re going to have to shoot them in the head." Gotcha!

We’ve got a Republican member of Congress out there going full bore on this stuff, saying he wants him and his fellow members of Congress to carry guns at the Capitol. Welcome to the State of the Union 2011. The violent rhetoric of the right won’t stop. It’s our top story tonight.

For roughly the next twelve minutes, Matthews went after conservatives - in particular Beck - for so-called violent rhetoric.

After a commercial break:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BARACK OBAMA, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: My number one focus is going to be making sure that we are competitive, that we are growing and we are creating jobs not just now but well into the future. And that’s what is going to be the main topic of the State of the Union.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MATTHEWS: Well, welcome back to sanity and to HARDBALL. That was President Obama in a message to supporters just the other day, Saturday. Here’s how Republican leaders Mitch McConnell and Eric Cantor reacted yesterday. Let’s listen.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SEN. MITCH MCCONNELL (R-KY), MINORITY LEADER: He’s quit bashing business and is now celebrating business. Well, it’s about time because the only way we’re really going to get unemployment down and get out of this economic trough is through private sector growth and development. And I think excessive government spending, running up debt, making us look like a Western European country is the wrong direction. That’s the direction they took the first two years.

REP. ERIC CANTOR (R-VA), MINORITY LEADER: ... on increasing government spending and trying to spawn (ph) action from a Washington-based perspective. And what the people have said is, Enough. We’ve got to shrink government. We’ve got to cut spending.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MATTHEWS: Don’t you just love the new Republican Party? We have the Tea Party people with the placards and the Nazi stuff, and then you have these two Junior Chamber types representing them in Washington.

So, after a lengthy segment complaining about so-called violent rhetoric on the Right, Matthews returned by linking the Tea Party to "Nazi stuff."

This followed the "Hardball" host presenting an image of a red target on the Capitol building with crosshears in the foreground last Thursday.

Does anyone involved in the production of this show see the hypocrisy, or are they all so driven by advancing their agenda that they're oblivious to such things?

Yes, that was a rhetorical question.

What an A-hole

In his very first breath he ties Jared Loughner to conservatives and then smears Glenn Beck with an out of context quote to make it sound like a death threat.

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Mon, 01/24/2011 - 10:47pm.

Anything that is less than 99% in agreement with Obama policies is construed as "Nazi" by the left.  I find the use of the term "Nazi" over and over again by left-wingers a disgrace.  It belittles the real, true "Nazi" tragedy that killed many of my people.

Matthews is a despicable person for using that term.

It's just so irritating.  The left-wing makes the use of a word like the 'n-bomb' or 'f@ggot' as essentially de-facto "fighting words".  All hell breaks loose all over the country if those words are used.  However, those same liberals will throw a word like "Nazi" around like it is something comical.  To compare somebody to a "Nazi" over and over again just because you disagree with them is like me calling every rapper a "n-bomb' just because I don't like their music.

Liberals should practice what they preach.

"Liberals should practice what they preach."

Are you actully implying that liberals can be hypocrites? :)

The problem is that the way "nazi" has been overused has caused it to lose it's shock value. Sadly, so much time has passed (in our stupid sped up world) since the 1930s, that the horror has lost it's immediacy. Time has dulled the true implication of the term. Too, there are less and less people who find the mis-use of it offensive, so idiots, like Matthews are free to bandy it about willy nilly, without consequence.

Submitted by Cool Arrow on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 1:03am.

We know liberals can be hypocrites.

And we know Rep. Steve Cohen is trying very hard to establish himself as the Al Sharpton of his own ethnicity.

It was hideous that he made such a mockery of so many murdered Jews, comparing them to Americans who don't have health insurance but nonetheless, do have health care.

What I do find surprising is that there seems to be very little outcry, Jew or Gentile, against Steve Cohen's hateful remarks in which he, just like the Klan, denied the severity of the holocaust.

With all the stories on losing Olbermann it was amazing how inconsequential in the ratings this Tingles Matthews turned out to be .  Bill O'Reilly illustrated it nicely tonight, FoxNews in the middle of the mid morning has higher numbers than ANY MSNBC show in Prime Time!   And Tingles is firmly at the bottom of their totem pole.

They have their stories written for them.  Timmy TinFoilhead writes the Glenn Beck "He said Nazi!" piece and Alice Abortionlover writes the "Tea Partiers are Nazis" one.   Stupid there just reads them.

The left, Mathews in particular, is like a playground tetherball. As he goes around and around in circles he goes faster and faster to the inevitable end of the proverbial rope where he bounces off the pole.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

A psychiatrist could make a career out of treating Chrissy Tingles.  If you have the stomach to listen to this nutcase through a full segment of his show, you can only reach one conclusion........"Tingles" won't do it, but electrochock treatment might.  The man is a total nut case.

Hey, Chrissie!  Why are you hiding under the desk?  You can't escape your ratings which are lower than reruns of Sponge Bob Squarepants.  Oh, you're hearing someone knocking at the door?  Must be the adults from COMCAST.  Get that resume up to date, Mr. Tingles.

Overuse of Nazi

Submitted by Thunder Lizard on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 2:50am.

Several have mentioned here and I fully agree, the term "Nazi" is grossly overused and it demeans what happened to the victims of real Nazis during World War II.  As a lay historian of World War II,  I find that the majority of those who use "Nazi" as routine pejorative in their vocabulary, can't really explain what the Nazis were. They know it is something bad and repressive, but that is about it.  I've confronted a few people flinging the term freely and asked "Okay, please tell me two or three salient points of Nationalist Socialst doctrine that the subject of your accusation either has practiced or has verbally acknowledged."  I either hear crickets or a very convoluted explantion that shows they really know nothing of the subject.   For the Left, calling someone a Nazi  is simply a matter of demonization.   In their mind, they don't have to show how that person  is actually  "Nazi-like" in any capacity.  Calling an opponent a Nazi is good enough.

Matthews/Tea Partiers/Nazis

Submitted by Jer on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 3:43am.

I believe those who think Matthews is painting tea partiers with the Nazi brush have misconstrued his intent.  Instead, he is complaining about the linking of Obama and his administration with Nazism.  [Like this, for example.] The authenticity of Matthews' charge, or at least the degree to which the practice has occurred and the level of involvement by tea partiers, is a matter of debate.  But that is the context of his comment, imo.

Matthews sensory confusion.

Submitted by nadnad1776 on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 4:08am.

Mr. Matthews confuses those who believe in limited government, private property and, the right of the people to bear arms, with groups like the Fascists and National Socialists, whose thinking on these principles was more along the line of progressives like Mr. Matthews and those whom he respects. He mistakes the people who do not want government to run everything for totalitarians. Blinded by the lights of his looking glass world he gets it, I think, just exactly wrong. Perhaps it is kind of on-air synesthesia, whereby a tinkle running down can be perceived as a tingle running up.
