Glenn Beck Pounds ABC and Amanpour for Shrugging Off Death Threat to Tea Partier
As NewsBusters reported over the weekend, ABC News did a deplorable job of informing viewers about a death threat made by a Tucson shooting survivor to a Tea Partier at the taping of a town hall event aired on Sunday's "This Week."
On Monday, Glenn Beck and his radio crew savaged Christiane Amanpour for her involvement in this fiasco while concluding, "That lack of truth is why places like ABC will eventually just go out of business and be looking for a handout from the government" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
GLENN BECK: Keith Olbermann says we should all listen to, cut 109 please. Here’s a victim of the shooting in Tucson. Here’s what he said.
Beck was referring to a message Olbermann tweeted followers on Twitter Friday sending people to a transcript of shooting survivor J. Eric Fuller being interviewed by Democracy Now's Amy Goodman:
(BEGIN AUDIOTAPE)
J. ERIC FULLER: How many other people? How many other demented people are out there? It looks like Palin, Beck, Sharron Angle and the rest got their first target.
(END AUDIOTAPE)
BECK: Okay. Keith Olbermann tweets right away and says, you know, we should listen to this guy because he’s a victim of the shooting. He wants to know how many demented people there are out there like this. Well, I can count one more. Cut 630.
Next, an audio clip was played of the end of Sunday's "This Week":
(BEGIN AUDIOTAPE)
CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR, HOST OF ABC’S “THIS WEEK”: Very, very important, because it means I think that the human spirit remains alive even through tragedy. So I thank you all for joining us today. For David Muir, and from me, Christiane Amanpour, and all of us here in Tucson, thank you for sharing part of your Sunday with us, and we will see you next week.
(While tape was running, Beck sidekick Pat Gray interjected, “Oh, and by the way, just as an aside.”
AMANPOUR: As our town hall concluded, one of the victims of the shooting in our audience became agitated and was detained by security. James Eric Fuller, who was shot twice last Saturday, appeared to direct a threat towards a member of the Tea Party in our audience when he spoke. Fuller was charged with a misdemeanor and involuntarily committed. According to the Pima County sheriff’s office.
(END AUDIOTAPE)
BECK: Okay, alright. So that’s really nice of you to share that. It was all on videotape. He appeared to threaten. He looked at the Tea Party members and the head of the Tea Party in Arizona who has already been warned do not show your face in public spaces now because you’re under threat. He appeared to make a threat. No, he took a picture of the Tea Party member and then pointed to him and said, “You’re dead. You’re dead.” And then was screaming something along the lines of, “What are you,” excuse the language, “bitches doing?” I believe he was taken out by two police officers, females, I’m not sure. “What are you bitches doing, what are you bitches doing?”
I don’t think that appears to be a threat. I think when a man points his finger at someone and says, “You’re dead,” I think that is a threat, Christiane Amanpour, although I don’t speak 1,400 languages and haven't, you know, eaten at the feet of sheiks and kings in the Middle East. So, what do I know?
I can’t believe this was only an aside, in an hour-long special on ABC.
PAT GRAY: Had it been the Tea Party guy who made a threat to somebody else, can you imagine?
BECK: Biggest story in the news today.
GRAY: Oh, oh my God.
BECK: “Here’s the end of the, hey, good night, everybody. (Whispering) And, by the way, somebody might have made a threat.”
(LAUGHTER)
I mean, what is that? What is that? That is a lack of journalism and a lack of truth that, quite honestly, that lack of truth is why places like ABC will eventually just go out of business and be looking for a handout from the government.
Indeed.
The idea that Amanpour and Company presented this matter as a 30 second aside at the end of their program while omitting key details was disgraceful.
As Gray pointed out, if Fuller were the Tea Partier threatening a shooting survivor, this would have been front page, headline news the past 48 hours.
As Fox News's Sean Hannity has been saying for months, journalism is dead.

Remains to be seen if ABC has any sense of shame.

So true! I'm sure they would pull the same cover for the TEA party ehh? I watched our local news in Dallas, Ch. 8, WFAA, and they blew right over that part of the story. A very brief mention near the end of the story on the 10pm news. They would have endless loops running if a conservative did this. They don't even show the available footage and say alleged threat.

Beck's right.
I've been saying for some time now, that the only hope for most liberal news organizations (i.e., ALL of them) is for the Obama regime to take over national media the way he's taking over everything else.
And once their king Obama conquers them, they'll be like PBS and NPR, kept alive only by leeching off the teat of the American taxpayers - who will be forced to foot the bill for these failed liberal news networks at the point of a government bayonet.

You mean people actually watch ABC? Even though Beck sometimes comes across as a 21st century Billy Sunday, he honestly believes what he says. Amanpour, as a liberal, has to believe what she says. That, or she fakes it well. I don't get Fox, so I can't watch Beck's show. But, I do get ABC and refuse to watch their programming. Beck, at least, says not to trust him, or anyone else. Play Ronald Reagan. That means " trust, but verify " .

Seeing as how ABC avoided reporting what he did and said, could they report his "apology"?
And when it comes out that he wasn't shot at all, it has already been dropped that he was shot "in the back" as now it is just his knee, what will ABC do?

The Fuller story is closer to the start than it is to the finish, by a long shot. I am going to go out on a limb here and say, imho, I don't believe he was even shot at all. I am thinking skinned knee and some huuuuuuge lies.

In this case though, the man making the threats, J. Eric Fuller, is certifiably crazy. He's been in the psychiatric ward of a local hospital since he made those threats. Just like with the Tucson shooting itself, politics really had little to do with Fuller's outburst. He's crazy and just experienced an extremely traumatic event.
The Tucson shooting was not really about politics, as Glenn Beck points out. It's time that we stopped pretending that politics has anything to do with the aftermath. I love Glenn Beck, but I think he missed a real opportunity here. At some point, the nation needs to have a discussion about how the mentally ill are neglected in this country .... neglecting Jared Laughner's mental illness led to the shooting. Neglecting the shock and likely emotional issues that resulted from the shooting led to Fuller's outburst and threats. If Beck and the other radio talkers would focus on the real issue - mental illness - perhaps the media would follow his example. But if they keep playing the media-doesn't-treat-us-fairly card, we'll never move past this tit-for-tat mentality. Like I tell my kids all the time when they are arguing, someone has to be the more mature one. Someone has to get the dialogue moving in the right direction, past the bickering. We know the media is not going to do that, so who does that leave?
sounds logical

But if you've paid attention to the pattern, it wouldn't change anything!
The left just gaslighted Palin - "it's all her fault" to "well, maybe it WASN'T the discourse but it's STILL all her fault", to "Why is she taking this so personal, geez"
So if Glenn stops pointing out how with the left it's always about them defining what the starting point is and if you disagree you must be extreme, and they will PERSONALLY attack you, how the hell do we ever get on track to even have that convo???

Look at all the ignorance shown by the voters in 2008 - the "sound bite" obviously won the day, lovingly shaped by the left.
I saw what was coming {O winning}, and figured we survived Clinton, but I really didn't see it would be THIS bad!!! And I paid attention!!!
I know more of us are awake this time, but if the structure of the left defining the narrative survives, I don't see us prevailing.
