Donny Deutsch Asks Sharpton on MLK Day: 'Should Arizona Secede From the Nation?'

By Noel Sheppard | January 17, 2011 | 12:07

Noel Sheppard's picture

As most of the nation celebrates Martin Luther King Day while attempting to move passed the tragic events in Tucson, CNBC's Donny Deutsch decided to ask Reverend Al Sharpton if Arizona should secede from the union.

Such happened on Monday's "Morning Joe" as the crew discussed gun laws in the wake of the shootings (video follows with transcript and commentary):

REVEREND AL SHARPTON: Kids have become, in my opinion, seduced with this gangster thug kind of culture that we've got to confront. They're no longer looking to role models as a Dr. King or Malcolm X, but they're looking to people like Scarface. We’ve got to confront it, we’ve got to deal with it directly because it's killing people in our communities. And on Dr. King Day, there's no more important message who himself was killed with gunfire.

SENATOR CHUCK SCHUMER (D-NEW YORK): And Reverend, the 1968 gun control act which still governs in many ways was passed in response to the assassination of Dr. King…

SHARPTON: That's correct.

SCHUMER: …and of Bobby Kennedy.

DONNY DEUTSCH: Reverend, I just want to, it's Donny. Hey buddy, I want to ask you a question. We're in the year 2011. We’re coming off the horrific, horrific event in Tucson. Yet as we celebrate Dr. King's day, there's still this very strange state, Arizona, that does not recognize it. I mean, maybe is there a time for a shift here? Should they secede from the nation? I, with all that’s going on, it's just almost bizarre at this point.

SHARPTON: Well, I think on today they have seceded. I mean, this is a federal holiday. This is something that the country can celebrate the progress we've made.

Nice job of toning down the rhetoric there, gentlemen.

This is exactly the kind of message mournful Arizonans want to see on their television screens as they try to heal from this hoffific event.

Boggles the mind, doesn't it?

(H/T The Blaze)

*****Update: As Ed Morrissey at Hot Air noted Monday, Deutsch and Sharpton were quite wrong...

Arizona began recognizing MLK Day in 1992, after a long battle over adding another paid holiday for government workers in the state. They weren’t even the last state to recognize it; New Hampshire changed Civil Rights Day to MLK Day in 1999. Utah changed Human Rights Day in 2000 to MLK Day, the same year South Carolina made it a paid holiday rather than just a day of remembrance.

So now that the “heated rhetoric” meme has been dismantled, apparently now we have the “Arizona is racist” meme instead on MSNBC, based on total and willful ignorance and a complete failure to bother to do any simple research on the issue. That must be the New Tone of MSNBC as they Lean Forward! Perhaps their motto should be Better Civility Through Ignorance.

Nicely said, Ed.

2012 will be a very difficult year the libs will try to show moving to the center and comprise with Republicans do not be decived.

The only question Sharpton

Submitted by celator on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 12:23pm.

The only question Sharpton should be asked is this one:

"Why do you still refuse to pay the $1.5 million you owe in Federal taxes? Or even the half that you still owe after the Feds cut you a deal?"

Great question! So far I havn't heard anything about RevSimpleton paying anyone in Duchess County, I belief it was, that he slandered, anything. As a matter of fact, my recollection is that the Rev was quite adament that he would not pay the court ordered fine.

One more question and a follow-up

Submitted by neutron on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 8:35pm.

DeutschBoy: Reverend, it's Donny the Deutsch Boy. Hey buddy, I want to ask you another question with a follow-up.

Sharpton: Okay, but first, did you wash your fingers?

DB: Yeah, I washed. So, after the recent events in Tucson, do you think Israel should dissolve their Knesset, give all their land and wealth to the Palestinians and focus on Palestinian statehood?

Sharpton: It's the least they could do to honor the Right Reverand Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr, who gave his life for equality of all peoples.

DB: Then would you agree that the events in Tucson should shame every Republican in Congress to stop their pogrom of systematic hate speech, renounce their evil ways, repent, and become Democrats?

Sharpton: It will not erase the sins of the past, but it would go a long way in helping the future.

The Reverend Al Sharpton is ....

Submitted by Kenyon Schraeder on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 1:01pm.

... no longer a credible factor in today's dialogue as mostly everyone just acknowledges him as a being a loud, obnoxious and divisive bloviator and more than just occasional rabble-rouser. Like the Reverend Jesse Jackson, his time has come and gone and both are often comedic parodies of themselves. Neither can survive financially without his respective circus as neither man has an actual job to go to. But, they will play the TV circuit like it was a cheap fiddle.

I believe that Al's undoing accelerated with the Don Imus firing. It's not that Imus didn't deserve some form of punishment for his ill-advised remark, it's that he (Sharpton) has never apologized or even expressed regret for the Tawana Brawley debacle he personally spearheaded over 23 years ago, despite losing a defamation lawsuit over it. Ask Steven Pagones if he deserved to be wrongfully accused and keelhauled because of the phony story. His life and those of his family members and friends would never be the same in the aftermath of the scandal.

People of all colors and creeds and political leanings will tend to remember the injustices committed, regardless of whom is affected by them. And loudmouthed opportunists like Al Sharpton will shamelessly use a person's skin color to their advantage, one way or another. Our sense of right and wrong tends to remind each one of us of those instances where we know for a fact that we were flat out lied to, especially when a grand scheme is concocted to deceive us.

I'm proud to be an Arizonan now and I'm also a proud and former native New Yorker, having lived in its heart for well over 50 years. Perhaps the rest of the Nation might be looking at us here in Arizona with a lot less skepticism than the talking heads on the left are alleging and unwilling to admit.

This is simply more of the Alinsky-ish divisiveness that isolates and demonizes for one strategized purpose and it's clearly not dialogue.

But the Irony is: The NAACP, Al Sharpton, Jim Clyburn, EVEN PRESIDENT OBAMA is working today while The False Murrow isn't. Epic Fail.

Submitted by MidAmerica on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 2:19pm.

Having grown up in the time of MLK I didn't forsee the tragedy that his death would cause.  The tragedy has been most severe for Black Americans.  MLK was human but always seemed sincere about his Christian faith and his commitment to equality, a color blind society.  I can't imagine his anguish if he could see some of very same people who walked with him have now turned the race issue into a money making and a partison political business.  THAT was not MLK's dream.

...this weekend when he was up in my neck of the woods, spouting about tolerance and whatnot in Burlington, VT.  Doesn't get much whiter than that, let me tell ya....

Anyway, I'm glad that he recognizes that today's black culture is in a mess because of the popular entertainment being sold to them.  Scarface isn't really the problem though--Wu-Tang, Akon, Jay Z...that's where the problem lies.

If we can blame Loughner's violence on Palin's one ambiguous website, can't we blame the violence in the black community on all the BS rap "artists" and their talk of violence and drugs?

Isn't it funny how Oprah loves to plug for Jay-Z, like he's some kind of civil rights leader, even though his songs are all about running drugs and treating women like objects?

How did Donny D-bag even get a show? What did he ever do?  I love to watch "the Big Idea" and laugh at this preppy yupster, with his Tavis Smiley-esque chairs and legs crossed and his stupid half-glasses perched on his nose...so serious, so important.  What a joke!
