Geraldo Rivera: Town Hall Death Threat 'Ironically Came From a Hard-core Liberal'

By Noel Sheppard | January 16, 2011 | 02:40

Noel Sheppard's picture

On the evening of the tragic shootings in Tucson, Fox News's Geraldo Rivera, like so many other liberal media members, went out of his way to connect the event to the Tea Party.

Seven days later, the host of "Geraldo at Large" told his viewers, "There was a very public death threat today in Tucson that prompted police action. Ironically, it came from a hard-core liberal" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

GERALDO RIVERA: This is a Fox News alert. Despite Mr. Obama’s appeal to our better angels, there was a very public death threat today in Tucson that prompted police action. Ironically, it came from a hard-core liberal. At a town hall meeting packed with eyewitnesses, concerned citizens and a member of Congress, Eric Fuller, a well-known left-wing activist, took a close-up photo of the local Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries. Then Fuller said, “You're dead.” He was promptly arrested. Before I get to my exclusive interview with Jeb Bush, for more on what went down in Tucson today, Jason Ogan, a deputy for the Pima County sheriff's department, joins us live alongside a familiar face, or at least a familiar hairdo, Steven Cates, friend of the alleged mass murderer Jared Loughner. Steven was at today's town hall meeting. Tell us what happened. Tell us what was said and what you saw, Steven.

STEVEN CATES, FRIEND OF JARED LEE LOUGHNER: Well, when the representative from the Tea Party stood up to speak and he announced that he was from the Tea Party, Eric turned around with his camera. Eric was in the front row and the Tea Party spokesman was in the fourth row. Eric turned around with his camera, took the picture of the guy from the Tea Party, and said, “You're dead,” like you had said.

RIVERA: And did he mean it? I mean, did it sound to you like a death threat, Steven?

CATES: It sounded, it sounded like "You're dead." I mean, it didn't sound like a joke at all. Throughout the rest of the time that…

RIVERA: Had he been a pain in the butt during this, during this town hall meeting? Had this guy, had he really interfered with what was going on?

CATES: People, people seemed pretty shocked at what he had said. There’s, there’s lots of whispers and there was someone next to me that had turned to Eric and said, “You know, now is not the time. This isn't appropriate. You need to sit down and be quiet. This isn't, this isn’t the time or place for this.” And he kept saying things like that whenever Eric would boo or, or make an interrupting noise at whatever the man from the Tea Party was saying.

Ironically indeed, for this is what Rivera said almost exactly one week ago:

One by one, all the dishonest points made by liberal media members to convince Americans this tragedy was caused by violent rhetoric from the Right are deliciously crumbling before their very eyes.

It's almost like the final scene from "Murder on the Orient Express" when Hercule Poirot, with all the suspects in attendance, describes who killed Ratchet.

Frankly, it's so entertaining, one can hardly wait for the next shoe to drop.

Thankfully, as Scarlett O'Hara said at the end of "Gone With the Wind," tomorrow is another day.

I saw the segment as well.  I took the "Ironically" to mean "After days of harping on the radical right, there was a liberal out there, not a right winger, who just couldn't help himself.

Normally I don't give Geraldo such benefit, but I guess it seemed good that he reported it at all, given his political leanings.

Naming the "liberal left" as the man's political leaning was surprising as well.

Geraldo saying 'ironically' says it all. He can't believe that a 'true liberal' would do anything more violent than stick a daisy in the barrel of a storm trooper's gun. Ironically, the following are leftist examples of violent radicals Geraldo ignores:

Lee Harvey Oswald

Sirhan Sirhan

Bill Ayers

Mumia the cop-killer

But that's normal

Submitted by Scottyb4292 on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 3:39am.

Incredibly, another account reports that a mental health specialist on the scene had commented that Mr. Fuller is suffering from some kind of post traumatic syndrome from last week's shootings and that his outburst should not be held to account against him.

Got that? No matter what happens, it's always Sarah Palin's fault or Rush Limbaugh's fault or the tea party's fault. But when a lefty says, "You're dead." and screams "You're whores.", he's a victim and it's not his fault and there are legitimate reasons for understanding why he would be stressed.

Evidently, our President's soothing call for calm and respect only work on one side of the conflict.

I hope that Trent Humphries has the stones to press charges against Fuller. It's necessary that he calmly, respectfully,  but firmly hold his ground and press charges.

He is excusable, according to the MSM,  because they took him for a mental evaluation. Too bad for the ones that were killed or wounded that some deputy didn't take the shooter in for mental evalution after all the problems he caused at Pima Community College.

The Charlotte Observer, the most liberal rag in this state, did run an AP story on this. The story was so slanted to the left to cover his ass.

Obama's Mentally Ill Base?

Submitted by Retired Geek on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 5:35am.

At some point - ALL people of Good Will are going to have to face the reality that insanity in the United States is at the level of an epidemic.

20% of voting age Adults were treated for mental illness in 2009.

How many were NOT treated? No one knows.

How can anyone predict the behavior of those mentally ill? No one knows.

20% of Voting age Adults are dedicated Barack Obama supporters.

Most of us here at Town Hall have learned that discourse with the mentally ill Liberals who frequent this Website, is extremely difficult at best, if NOT impossible.

Examining the behavior of those who are addicted to drugs, alcohol or sexual perversion etc. gives us some reference points on what we are dealing with.

1) Someone else or something else are ALWAYS blamed for their addictions.
2) The reason their lives are abject failures is that someone or something has held them back from success.
3) The ONLY reason Anyone else has been successful is because of luck.
4) Some conspiracy by Government, employers, families or 'THEY' has always been the reason they have not succeeded.
5) They always 'Feel' that if something or someone were destroyed, then their lives would 'Turn Around' and they would be successful.
6) They always 'Hate' anyone or anything that is successful as much or more as they 'Hate' themselves.
7) Their erratic and Insane behaviors are always 'Triggered' by outside forces and NOT from within.

Liberal Progressives know these things and focus on stirring up or radicalizing these behaviors in order to carry out their Agendas.

Barack Obama uses all of these things against the mentally ill and knows that Envy and Covetousness will drive a huge majority to Hate and Vilify anyone who has succeeded or is succeeding - Obama Targets a nebulous group he terms the 'Rich' (Obama changes the definition frequently) to foment and stir up Hatred and keep Hatred fueled.

One definition of Irony includes:

"an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected"

Expected by whom?  By you Geraldo?  By what standard of decency and objective understanding of historic threats and vitriolic logical assumptive base could one define a threat from a Liberal and unabashed hater of all things Conservative like Fuller appears as 'Ironic'???

This wasn't ironic.  What is ironic is the Left's take on what caused the Arizona shooter to want to kill innocents.  The irony is that they blame those who simply disagree strongly with their attempts to 'remake' America in their image.

Not necessarily in the image of the baseline America.

Submitted by talkradio55 on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 1:06am.

This reminds of a point I made after the election. The Obama voters accepted from him a level of depravity that they wouldn't tolerate from their kids. If liberals held Obama to the same moral standard they held their children to, he wouldn't have had a snowball's chance in hell of getting elected dog catcher, let alone President.

Hold politicians to the same moral standards that we hold our children to,  and there won't be a liberal in any political office anywhere in America. Problem solved.

The Threat is to us all

Submitted by CSM on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 9:04am.

The threat is to all of us who belong to the Tea Party movement or to 9/11 groups.

The crazies who want to do harm to Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck,Rush Limbaugh and all of the other voices or writers who threaten the Socialist Cause in this country will not be able to approach these people because of the security that will surround them as a result of this and other threats. Or at least I pray they won't . However, The people who will wear the Live Free or Die T-shirts and their Restore Honor rally shirts. These people will be the targets in the coming months and years. The Socialist Media in this country has beat the drum long enough and hard enough that the Socialists will be looking for someone to attack. We must all be aware of this.

No one ever said restoring our country would be easy!!

Geraldo Rivera is hard core liberal and always will be. That he would say things that would still point to the Tea Party as responsible for this act does not suprise me in the least. Nor should it suprise anyone here.

Liberal equals Peaceful

Submitted by ajkrik on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 11:26am.

This is the left-over mythology of the liberals, that they are a people of "peace" and gentleness.

That's Jeraldo's sense of "irony". Despite all that has passed, despite working with a lot of conservatives, it's just beyond his programing to change his basic myth about the liberals of the world.

They're no more "peace-loving" than anyone else.

Define "peace"

Submitted by Clutch1956 on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 10:11pm.

When you hear someone use the term "peace" or "peaceful", ask them to give you their definition of the term. You may be surprised to find that their definition does not match yours. Remember when the late, unlamented (except by the Democrat Party of the USA) USSR said that their intentions were peaceful and all that they wanted was peace. Well, their definition of "peace" sure doesn't match mine, as theirs was "when all opposition to Communism worldwide ceases and the world embraces the teachings of Marx & Engels, there will be peace" (I paraphrase, but that is the essence of it). So don't believe it when your opposition says that they are for peace or any other term that might seem simpatico to your mission, they probably have different operating parameters than you do. Just like the "peaceful" religion of Islam (yeah, the peace of the grave for all unbelievers).

Just like peaceniks & pacifists claim that killing is against The Ten Commandments, but it is not. The original commandment is "Thou Shall Not Murder", which is completely different in definition, cause and motivation than "Thou Shall Not Kill". "Kill" by definition DOES NOT EQUAL "murder". Words have specific meanings and you can't always substitute one word for another without fundamentally changing the meaning of the message.

Ironic that he said ironically...

Submitted by retrocon on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 11:27am.

It's ironic that he calls it ironic.

Liberal transference syndrome, where liberals transfer unto conservatives the evils of their own minds, is at work.  So i would expect two things 1) weak willed liberals will respond to their pundits and dear leaders and build a violence induced hatred at the drop of a newscast; and 2) that liberals will transfer this weak willed mental condition on to the conservatives they hate so much.

So the irony?  The real irony is that they think it's ironic that they could be politically motivated to violence, when in reality, they have all along been the ones suffering from the problem, and merely transferring their weak willed mental condition onto their stronger willed political opposites.

We COULD look back to the Al Capone's vault fiasco, but why?  His little Jerry Springer like talk show ended up with him getting his nose busted in one of the on stage fights he spurred on.  This is the same "tough guy" that always talked about all the physical violence he's like to visit upon those he deemed to have assaulted his sense of right and wrong on his little show, but somehow, always had body guards around to keep him nice and safe.

This is the same guy who, along with Shepard Smith, was down there in New Orleans crying about how horrible the plight of the poor were, how it was obviously a racist plot by the government, ignoring that the people there either chose to stay, or were stuck while Ray Nagin let his school buses get flooded because he demanded that the government force Greyhound to reroute all their buses to evacuate residents in comfort.  This is the same idiot who, the morning after Katrina hit New Orleans, was busily excusing the looting of stores by claiming that people were "starving" for lack of food, all in less than 12 hours from when they could have stocked up before hand.  (And being as I was living in Puerto Rico for 12 years, including when Hurricane George hit, I was just flabbergasted that there was food still on the shelves to loot to begin with with all the warning people got, whereas in PR, the store shelves would be be emptied before every big storm hit the island.)

I never did understand Fox News' decisison to hire this wanna be hero, given his history of self aggrandizement, but I guess that's just another example of how Fox News is such an extreme right wing channel, with no balance whatsoever, it needs to be censored.

In liberal speak "ironically"= "As usual"

Submitted by Willis_Leon_Johnson on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 12:05pm.

The normal state of affairs is every recorded wacko shooter in schools, shopping malls, etc have a long history of liberal leanings.

They all read the same leftist anti-American books, and pray to the same messiah alinsky.

ALL 'hate speech' that comes from the left is protected, but civil rhetoric from the right is always hate speech.

End 'gun violence in America' - Require training and MANDATORY "Shall Carry" by every Citizen.

If harry reid is the best person to lead the senate, what does that say about the other 99 senators?

Mr. Rivers must be horrified.

It isn't a moment of irony. It is a moment of actuality.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

What's "ironic" is that it

Submitted by rbosque on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 2:13pm.

What's "ironic" is that it wasn't a liberal media mutant that made the death threat.

Blam! Obama's Poll Rating Went Sucked!

Submitted by Rod Patrick on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 2:20pm.

Despite his opportunistic Pep Talk (memorial went to campaign rhetoric) that has been highly acclaimed by media and pundits from both Left and Right (including CrapHummer),

Obama's approval rating plummeted in the last 5 days.   Tip to Obama: The fake Greek columns are more "classy" compared to 5 dead people as props in a campaign!  Applause!  Obama didn't expect applause in his speech as per Gibbs? And why didn't Obama ask  his  "adoring fans" to be quiet since they're in a middle of a "memorial" and not a campaign rally! Yikes!

And people like me, who was not yet convinced 2 weeks ago into supporting Palin in the primaries, have clearly made a decision to FIGHT FOR ...

SARAH PALIN 2012 BOTH IN THE PRIMARIES AND THE GENERAL ELECTION!

All my money, all my time ... to campaign for SARAH PALIN 2012!

IT'S CLEAR NOW: REPUBLICAN PARTY IS THE PARTY OF NO BALLS, IT'S THE PARTY OF POLITICAL 'VICTIMHOOD"!

Never again.  I hate being such kind of Republican.  I have two balls, and from now on, I will never be a victim of the Liberal Media!   I will defend all true conservatives!

Woe to all republicans who did not defend Sarah Palin and the Tea Party from false accusations/blood libel!

Last I heard, his rating had increased, but that was 4-5 days ago. Haven't heard anything recently.

Hey Rod

Submitted by CSM on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 5:27pm.

Hey Rod,You forgot something. Don't you think it will look sooooo nice to see the Repubs and the Dims sitting together during the State of the Union speech? Maybe they will hold hands with each other when the scary parts come from the Big O. I sincerly hope the Repubs don't get a wee wee'd up during the above mentioned scary parts.

Do the Repubs think that we replaced the Dims so they could kiss and make up?? No we sent them there to oppose their policies. What a mess this is!!!!

These people do not get it yet. I guess we will have to replace (with the vote, I don't want to scare anybody) a few hundred more until they do.

Sarah in 2012 sounds good to me!!
