Bill Maher: 'Because We Don't Have Government Healthcare, That's One Reason Why a Crazy Person Gets a Gun'

By Noel Sheppard | January 15, 2011 | 02:02

More and more, the idea that Bill Maher has his own television show to advance his insane theories should be worrisome to right-thinking Americans.

Case in point: during the first installment of the new season of "Real Time" on HBO, Maher actually said with a straight face, "Because we don't have government healthcare, that's one reason why a crazy person gets a gun" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRYSTIA FREELAND, REUTERS: I'm from Alberta. I’m from Alberta. Calgary has a Muslim mayor. My Dad does have guns, but we have universal healthcare. And Canada is heaven for the Elizabeth Warrens of the world because it has banking regulations. That's the difference. It didn’t have a financial crisis. And the government didn't have to bail out the banks. So the middle-class is okay.

BILL MAHER: Because we don't have government healthcare, that's one reason why a crazy person gets a gun, because you know what, it's hard for a crazy person to get a job. So therefore it's hard for them to get healthcare in a country that doesn’t have government…

So, if America had universal healthcare, Jared Lee Loughner would have had a job, wouldn't have purchased a gun, and wouldn't have gone on a shooting rampage last Saturday.

And this man Maher actually has his own television program to advance such theories.

It's almost scarier than folks like Loughner possessing a gun, isn't it?

Yeah, well that would cover those psychos with jobs who bring a gun to work one day to shoot all of their co-workers.

But what explains you, Bill?

Submitted by Vivaldi5 on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 2:47am.

"It's hard for a crazy person to get a job"? But somehow Maher seems to be doing OK--rather inexplicably, in view of insanity like this, but at least he's still drawing a paycheck. No need for him to go looking for a job at Red Robin....thus far....

Forced yearly mandatory mental health evaluations.

Submitted by The Vet on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 2:51am.

So government healthcare would include forced mental health evaluations now? Because that is the only way he would have a job if he had been under a treatment plan.

As far as I know, the Loon Jared did have access to healthcare. And plenty of people saw the warning signs but little was done about it.

So under this imagined government healthcare plan, we would be forced under the full force of government ----

1. To submit to forced mental health evaluations or be put in jail.

2. To follow any medical plans that would come out of the health evaluation or be put in jail.

3. To report daily or multiple times a day to take any prescriptions under assigned government watchful eyes or be put in jail.

4. To submit proof of government medical mental health plans and proof you are following any mental health prescriptions to prospective employers to show you are no threat.

5. Now you can have a job NuttyBoy. Don't be late.

Mahr is just a very small

Submitted by Captain Repus on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 2:52am.

Maher is just a very small person who never has and never will make a meaningful contribution to civil society.

I will not be surprised if he is eventually busted stoned out of his mind in the back seat of a car naked with a pretty little 12 year old boy. He suffers from the little man syndrome such that he tries to overcome his physical shortcomings by use of pointless profanity and thinks he can lower others to his level by use of childish insults.

Submitted by gvik on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 3:12am.

Does anyone actually watch this buffoon anymore?  Seriously, how many viewers can he possibly have?  They must be thinning out after the last couple of years with him going completely off the deep end.  No government health care equals crazy people with guns, huh?  Talk about stretching to make your point.  Guy must have more rubber in his joints then Mr. Fantastic.

It's quite amazing what we have come to.  But then again, these moronic liberals have to work triple time to defend their messiah since his numbers, and those of the party, are plummeting faster than a lead balloon shot out of a railgun aimed at the ground.  Let's just hope the House can keep the havoc the dimmocrats are determined to wreak on their way out of office to an absolute minimum.

As a mental health patient, Loughner qualified for free care

Submitted by OxyCon on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 3:19am.

Loughner could have gotten free, state sponsored mental health care from Arizona State Hospital.

It doesn't actually mean that.  Like most state-run mental facilities, it probably does treat most patients for free because they are there involuntraily on commitment.  But believe it or not, it's likely that the shooter was not commitable.

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 9:41am.

Arizona is one of 2 states, I think the ohter is Florida, where it is not all that hard to have someone involuntarly commited.

Here in NC if you have insurance you would go to one of the private run facilties. If you don't you got to a state run facility. Most of the state run facilities are crap holes. They mostly lock one up for their own safety and the safety of the public. As it turns out I doubt the nut case that did the shooting could have been rehabilitated. He needed to be locked up for the safety of the public.

Right.  The laws vary from state to state, but generally, mental health professionals do an assessment and make the case for commitment in a hearing before a judge.  The patient and his attorney are present, and he can make a case against commitment.

Usually a person can be committed only if there is persuasive evidence of "imminent danger to self or others."  Based on what I've heard on the news thus far, Loughner was viewed as weird, but I don't think he issued any direct threats, nor did he reveal his assassination plan.  I don't doubt that he's psychotic, but that's not enough to get him committed.

I lived in Scotland some years back and I remember some guy took a rifle and killed some kids at a school, I lived only a few miles away. I went to the memorial and saw many of the families of the dead mouning. Last time I checked, they had goverment run healthcare and that didn't stop that maniac from going on a shooting spree.

Maher needs mental help.

Useless presenting facts to Maher

Submitted by dbo on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 11:40am.

Same thing in Canada. I can probably think of a dozen cases off the top of my head and Canada only has 10% of the US population. The most famous was probably Marc Lepine who killed 14 and shot 28 at a Montreal college in 1989. Just a few years ago there were over 20 shot at a different Montreal college. One of the more bizarre cases was a guy who killed 3 people and wounded 13 others with a sub-machine gun inside the Quebec legislature. It's a lose/lose situation for conservatives when it cimes to Maher and his ilk on the left. When a Democrat is shot it is the fault of Palin, Rush etc. or "society" in general. If, God forbid, Palin herself were shot the media and the left would go on ad infinitum about how she was targeted because of her own ideals.

Who does someone connect these two dots? There are free mental health clinics every where. Maybe Bill thinks this nut had some other health problems which no one knows about yet, but wait as every liberal knows Loughner is the victim here the people who were shot are only collateral damage who are barely worth their mention. Maybe liberals should not be allowed to own guns.

You can lead a liberal to logic but you can't make them think.

In typical liberal mindset,

Submitted by Barack_must_go..... on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 9:11am.

In typical liberal mindset, Mahar parrots the Obama Socialist Regime talking points furthering the blatent lie that the ' fatally flawed ' ObamaCare is a panacea for all the desease, fiscal and social issues that plague our society.........which just is not true.

We've already seen the truth uncovered regarding this job, life, America killing scam not covering ALL Americans.

Recently it was revealed, although rather effectively covered up by the administration / lame street media quid pro quo deal, the actual cost to America's middle class will be more than 1.3 trillion, not a net savings once the ( by design, to conceal the truth ) dust settles.

You need to honestly ask yourselves, why would president Obama sign a law into being, which supposedly saves 30,000 lives ( due to insurance coverage ) per year, but this law does not implement until 4 years from the day he signed it into law, effectively signing a death warrent for 120,000 of your fellow Americans?

Because ObamaCare has nothing to do with the health or well being of the citizens of this country. Rather it is an elaborate, diabolical power grab to control every aspect of daily life, finance, business and commerce in America  by a radical, reparations driven, community organizer, golf / basketball enthusiast, con man and his socialist / communist czars hidden away in the bowels of our White House.

but I digress........

The falacy of Maher's straw man arguement hinges on a premise whereby the mentally ill, their families, community at large or trained officials ( sherrif, police, guidance councelors, etc. ) will actually read the signs and follow thru with the process needed to insure the unspeakable devastation we witnessed last Saturday never happens again.

What could one reasonably expect to turn out differently with a recalcitrant, possibly scitsofrenic 22 year old man, his brain dead parents, basic human nature, incompetent school officials, incompetent law enforcement, a corrupt sherrif, and the derelict judgement of a Congresswoman ( after publicly expressing her fears of just such a horrific scenario unfolding ) to take proper, worse any safety precautions what so ever pre total implementation of ObamaCare versus after, if the American people, Republican majority and the newly elected president Sarah Palin didn't " KILL THE BILL " as her first order of business after being sworn into office...............answer....NOTHING.

Mrs. Loughner works for the County Commisioner's office. It's quite possible we will find out everyone, including police department, sherrif officers, etc., all knew Jared's mental issues, yet looked the other way as a professional courtesy............one that eventually got 6 people, including a beautiful 9 year old little girl murdered and many others mamed for life by the physical, mental scars.

The Ass Clown ought to have the United States Justice Department undertake an extensive investigation, but after that campaign rallye they sponsored for him last Saturday, he finds himself sort of between Barack and a hard place on the issue.

He's never done the RIGHT thing in the past, why would now be any different.
