ABC World News Reports Threat at its Tucson Town Hall, Omits it Was Made to a Tea Partier
As NewsBusters previously reported, a survivor of last week's Tucson shootings issued a death threat to a Tea Party member Saturday in the middle of a taping for a town hall meeting to be aired on ABC's "This Week."
For some reason, ABC World News Saturday in its report about the gathering chose to omit the seriousness of the threat and that it was made to a Tea Partier (video follows courtesy Mark Finkelstein with transcript and commentary):
DAVID MUIR, ABC NEWS: And Christiane Amanpour joins us now. Pleasure to do the town hall with you today, and wasn't it something to see this community come together? No matter what side they're from, they want consensus.
CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR, HOST “THIS WEEK”: It's absolutely remarkable, and that's what has impressed so many people, how the community has reacted, how they’ve bonded, how they want to go forward, and how even though there are still differences of political opinion, today we saw them wanting to carry on an honest dialogue as they said, but a reasonable and rational one.
MUIR: And we'll get into that dialogue about mental health and guns tomorrow morning, but one of the things that struck me today was all of this talk about ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things.
AMANPOUR: Exactly, and so much is being said and so much is being made of these ordinary people who put themselves in the position of being real heroes. Now, they don't want to take that label, but each and every one of us wonders how would we react in a similar situation, and I think they have really shown fortitude and courage and whatever we want to call it, they should be honored.
MUIR: Christiane, thank you. And again, I'll join Christiane for a special edition of “This week,” “After the Tragedy: An American Conversation Continued.” That’s tomorrow morning right here on ABC.
Another note tonight on today's town hall meeting, one of the victims of the shooting who was in the audience became agitated and was detained by security. It happened toward the end of the conversation. James Fuller who was shot twice last week, took offense at what another audience member was saying and mumbled what seemed to be a threat. Security did escort him out of the building, and he's been charged now with a misdemeanor.
As NewsBusters reported earlier, this was apparently far more serious than what Muir conveyed. Here's Fox News's take on the matter:
GREGG JARRETT, FOX NEWS: We are getting word now from Pima County Sheriff's office confirming to Fox News that one of the Tucson shooting victims a week ago today has allegedly today uttered a death threat during a taping of a town hall meeting for ABC’s "This Week" that will air tomorrow. Now, toward the end of the town hall meeting today, it was this morning, one of the shooting victims, his name is J. Eric Fuller, apparently took exception to comments by two of the speakers, Arizona state Representative Terri Proud, a Republican, and Tucson Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries. And according to sheriff's deputies at the scene, Fuller took a photo of Humphries, again, the Tea Party spokesman, and said, “You are dead.” Fuller will and has apparently already been charged with a couple of things, threats and intimidation and disorderly conduct.
Again, one of the survivors of the shooting a week ago is being charged now with uttering death threats and apparently it was either caught on tape or certainly seen by a crowd that included dignitaries at this town hall meeting being conducted. This is -- all right, this is J. Eric Fuller who was one of the many people who were shot a week ago recovering from his injuries attending this town hall meeting with dignitaries there, as well as just citizens, witnesses to the shooting, as well as those who were affected by it, as well as first responders. A town hall meeting. Picks up a picture of Terry Humphries, a spokesperson for the local Tea Party group in Tucson, and says, "You're dead." Now, under the law, according to law enforcement there, that constitutes a crime, a crimes of threat and intimidation, disorderly conduct for which he has now been charged.
Why did ABC choose to omit these vital details?
Such seems especially curious as even the New York Times offered readers a better picture of what transpired in an article published at The Caucus blog moments ago (h/t Finkelstein):
The shooting victim, Eric Fuller, 63, became agitated as another man spoke in support of gun ownership, The Arizona Republic reported. He took a photograph of the speaker and said, “You’re dead.”
The speaker was identified in other reports as Trent Humphries, a founder of the Tucson Tea Party.
Fascinating that a Times blog provided greater detail about this matter than the news organization that was actually present for the entire thing.
Even more surprising was that in the article ABCNews.com published concerning today's events at the meeting, greater details were given than on World News:
Towards the end of an otherwise thoughtful town hall, there was a single incident: James Eric Fuller, who was shot at the Safeway last week, allegedly made a threatening comment to another audience member, Tucson Tea Party co-founder Trent Humphries. It is unclear whether Humphries heard Fuller and the two never engaged. According to the Pima County Sheriff's Department, Fuller used a cell phone to take a picture of Humphries and allegedly said, "You're dead."
Fifteen seconds after the conclusion of the town hall, law enforcement officials approached Fuller and led him to a side entrance. A moment later, Fuller could heard yelling, "What's the matter--with you--whores!" Fuller was charged with disorderly conduct and threatening and intimidation and taken to a local mental health facility, according to the Sheriff's Department.
Again, why would World News opt to omit all this?
Might it have gone counter to Muir's contentions that this was a community that has really come together. "No matter what side they're from, they want consensus."
This also wouldn't fit with Amanpour's claim, "It's absolutely remarkable, and that's what has impressed so many people, how the community has reacted, how they’ve bonded, how they want to go forward, and how even though there are still differences of political opinion, today we saw them wanting to carry on an honest dialogue as they said, but a reasonable and rational one."
A man issuing a death threat to a Tea Partier is hardly a picture of a reasonable and rational dialogue, is it?
On the other hand, if Fuller was the Tea Party member, and Humphries was the shooting survivor, do you think ABC would have been concerned about presenting a unified community, or would this report focused extensively on a conservative making such a death threat?
Seems a metaphysical certitude the latter would have been the case.
Whatever the answer, Amanpour and Company sure seem comfortable editing out inconvenient information from their reports.
When ABC's Pierre Thomas interviewed a friend of shooter Jared Lee Loughner's during last Sunday's "This Week," her opinion about the assailant being a liberal was completely ignored.
Makes you wonder what will be presented in Sunday's program.

We will hear from every soft fuzzy type about some new type of syndrome, disease or other nexus of symptoms that will never see the light of day in a DSM.

Liberal media, especially the major networks, continue to show their colors by reporting news that has been altered. The fact that the person was a Tea Party supporter is huge because many on the left claim conservatives are the violent hate talk problem. Even more amazing is that such practices are well known and have been talked about in many circles. Americans see this and know they get filtered news from the majors. The ratings reflect this. You'd think the networks would "get it" and change such practices.

I saw Mr. Humphries, the tea Party organizer speaking and i heard the muffled remarks of Mr. Fuller more than once. No one did anything. He would have had time to pull out a gun and shoot the place up. At one point, Mr. Humphries pauses briefly and looks over at Fuller and then goes on with his remarks. To me, it appeared as a look of w.t.h. and brief concern and then i guess thinking that nothing could happen in a crowded room.
I do want to say that some of the remarks and suggestions of the panellists was down right frightening for the future of the country. Mr. Humphries made a valid point against Ms. Schultz point about mental health care provided in Obama care. He said that HIPAA would have prevented any reporting of Mr. Loughner's condition. And he's right.
At the very end of the show, Ms. Amanpour states...let me repeat, AT THE VERY END, that a survivor of the shooting became agitated at a tea party members remarks and was escorted out by lawmen. I paraphrase. She did mention the remarks were made to a tea party rep, not what the remarks were and he was handled very gently by the law...by that i mean he was not touched but was rather quietly escorted out with 3 to 4 deputies around him. He led the way. Downplaying in my opinion.
I think those people in the audience sat by while someone else delivered threats to an audience member. They would have done nothing other than duck for cover. Don't give up your guns Arizona CC holders.

From that alone, I interpret it as a demonstration with a camera on how easy a gun would have made an assassination, not a threat of future action.

If there is doubt that the camera incident was intended to be a threat, then attacking him on that basis is similar to (and as inappropriate as) the attacks on Palin's crosshairs. A bit hypocritical if you contend the attacks on Palin were unwarranted.
I will grant you that his method of expression was inappropriate and probably illegal, but from the report alone, I'm not convinced that he intended it as a threat.

I'm just going by the report that he yelled "You're dead." Without an indication of tone and body language, it is impossible to know if he meant it as a threat. (i.e. A solemn "You're a dead man" is different than a "Bang, bang, you would be dead if the camera was a gun." ) If you can't see the difference that I'm talking about, don't bother to respond. It won't be relevant.

I saw the Town Meeting this morning. Christine Amanpour and the guests and most in the audience were still very sad and looked to be healing as they spoke of the tragedy at Safeway last weekend. They were still grieving. They were talking about how their community could heal. They were talking about ways to stop the crazed gunman from having access to weapons and ammunition as he did. Some spoke of mental illness. Some spoke of the ability to obtain so much ammunition. The exception was Tucson Tea Party Leader Trent Humphries. He said now was NOT the time to talk about changing anything. It was obvious he did not want the laws changed re: assault weapons, caches of ammunition, or screening for mental illness. The victim's response to Humphries was NOT shown during the televised meeting, however, they did show the victim being peaceably walked out of the room by the police.
I can understand how the victim would be upset by Humphries. Most people in Tuscon know Humphries history and some of his quotes, including:
. Humphries led teams of Tea Party marchers in marching in front fo Gabby's office with Hate Filled messages every day for over a year.
. Earlier this year, after Gabby's office windows were broken out of her campaign headquarters he said, "Giffords' is toast. She's going to have a lot of problems especially since she has some really good candidates runnign against her."
. Humphries also disgustingly blamed US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords for her own shooting when he said, "The real case is that she (Giffords) has no security whatsoever at this event. So if she lived under a constant fear of being targeted. If she lived under this constant fear of this rhetoric and hatred that was seething, why would she attend an event in full view of the public with no security whatsoever."Can you provide a link for

I also agree with Humphries that laws shouldn't be changed as an emotional response to a tragedy. It should be done thoughtfully and carefully, not as a knee jerk reaction to a crazed person.

UFO's are landing and will use monkeypeople as food!
UFOs are being spotted all across our skies. Over the past few weeks, credible sources have spotted them in Texas and Chicago. Some of the credible sources include Pilots and United Airline employees. In Texas, at first the military denied any sightings or involvement. Then, this week, they confirmed there were F-16s conducting tests in the area. What is interesting is the witnesses (some pilots) said they saw the F-16s chasing the UFOs. In the Chicago area, United Airline supervisors and airport employees saw the UFOs and reported them to the authorities, yet the authorities did NOT maintain public record of these reports. It was only after a detailed investigation by reporters that these sighting reports were confirmed.
Additionally interesting is that in both of these sightings, the UFOs were generally described as silent, apparently changing speeds and passing over populated areas. Some of these UFOs were as large as "a Wal-Mart building." With all of these confirmed sightings by credible witnesses, one thing is clear. Something is happening. Is the Government conducting tests of equipment they do not want revealed to the public? Or are they trying to cover up actual UFO sightings? Those aren't targets, they are map symbols, and there are litterally hundreds of sets of boundary and topographic surveys, construction plans for both residential and commercial sites, right-of-way plans for railroads, power line and natural gas easements recorded in court houses all over the southeastern United States WITH MY NAME ON THEM that have those symbols all over them.
They are used to identify points you want to highlight - like property corners, elevation points, utility locations, and about a couple of hundred other things you might want to point out.
I suppose the next charge you are going to make is that I put those symbols all over that Wal-Mart site in East Bumblejerk Wherever because I was targeting its customers.

His state senate record? He voted "present" at least 129 times. Not yes or no, present. What kind of leadership is that? He was able to vote for the killing of babies 100% of the time. He also got into the state senate after having his opponents divorce records unsealed and used against him.
Two years of his U.S. Senate term were spent campaigning.
He was never a Constitutional law professor, he was an adjunct lecturer.

Tucson Tea Party Leader Trent Humphries, ran against Gabby Giffords for Congress and LOST. Humphries led teams of Tea Party marchers in marching in front of Gabby's office with Hate Filled messages, every day for over a year.
Earlier this year, after Gabby's office windows were broken out of her campaign headquarters,
Humphries said, "Giffords is toast. She's going to have a lot of problems, especially since she has some really good candidates running against her."
Humphries also disgustingly blamed US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords for her own shooting. “The real case is that she [Giffords] had no security whatsoever at this event. So if she lived under a constant fear of being targeted, if she lived under this constant fear of this rhetoric and hatred that was seething, why would she attend an event in full view of the public with no security whatsoever?”
Today, this zealot attended a "Healing Meeting" hosted by CNN's Christine Amanpour and incited the crowd, by voicing support for open carry of weapons like the Killer's 9MM Glock. Understandably, one of the victims who was shot by the Killer became upset.
Apparently Tucson's Tea Party leader Humphries has so empathy or sympathy for the victims of this heinous rampage!

We just have to make sure we pick our own candidate and not someone the MSM wants us to run. Whoever we get, we can rest assured that the Democrats won't get the youth vote again. Forcing them to pay for healthcare they don't need yet to get the votes of those insured by Obamacare has soured them.
