Paul Krugman Blames Giffords Shooting on Palin, Limbaugh and Beck
While Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) fights for her life in a Tucson, Arizona, hospital, liberal media members continue to point fingers of blame for Saturday's tragic shooting spree at prominent conservatives such as Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck.
Jumping on this pathetic bandwagon Saturday was New York Times columnist Paul Krugman:
We don’t have proof yet that this was political, but the odds are that it was. She’s been the target of violence before. And for those wondering why a Blue Dog Democrat, the kind Republicans might be able to work with, might be a target, the answer is that she’s a Democrat who survived what was otherwise a GOP sweep in Arizona, precisely because the Republicans nominated a Tea Party activist. (Her father says that “the whole Tea Party” was her enemy.) And yes, she was on Sarah Palin’s infamous “crosshairs” list. [...]
You know that Republicans will yell about the evils of partisanship whenever anyone tries to make a connection between the rhetoric of Beck, Limbaugh, etc. and the violence I fear we’re going to see in the months and years ahead. But violent acts are what happen when you create a climate of hate. And it’s long past time for the GOP’s leaders to take a stand against the hate-mongers.
The Left are making a big issue out of the fact that Palin targeted Giffords as a vulnerable Democrat last year, but Markos Moulitsas did the same thing in June 2008:
As we've seen these past couple of weeks, we've got a problem in our caucus -- while we have been busy stocking up on more Democrats, fact is the good ones are being swamped by the bad ones. [...]
If your local congresscritter is one of the bad apples, start organizing locally. Plug into existing networks or start your own. Begin looking for primary challengers. Do the groundwork. Don't expect help from the local party establishment, they'll close ranks. So tap into alternate infrastructures. Find allies in the progressive movement. If your local shitty Democrat is anti-union, approach the unions. They'd love to send this kind of message. If the Democrat is anti-choice, work with the women's groups. If the Democrat is anti-environment ... you get the idea. If you have access to professional networks and money, start organizing those.
Of course, this takes more than just bitching about your frustrations on a blog, damning a whole party for the actions of a minority more scared of Mr. 28% than of protecting the Constitution they swore to protect. This takes hard work. But now is the time to start.
And while people like me will focus on the task at hand this year, it won't be long after Election Day that we'll start looking at the 2010 map, looking for those great primary challengers.
Who to primary? Well, I'd argue that we can narrow the target list by looking at those Democrats who sold out the Constitution last week. I've bolded members of the Blue Dogs for added emphasis.
Giffords was one of the House representatives Markos bolded (h/t HillBuzz):

"Not all of these people will get or even deserve primaries, but this vote certainly puts a bulls eye on their district."
The reality is that Moulitsas did absolutely nothing wrong in June 2008. Political strategists target opponets. Period.
But it appears Moulitsas forgot this when he pointed his own accusatory finger at Palin with a tweet Saturday:
![]()
As I tweeted to Moultisas Saturday, his mission in 2008 as it pertained to Giffords was the same as Palin's in 2010, just from a different direction. Shouldn't Krugman and others in the media be blaming him for his use of the words "target" and "bulls eye?"
As for Krugman, it is pathetic of him to make the conclusions and insinuations he did given what we now know about Giffords' alleged assailant. All indications are that Jared Lee Loughner is a liberal.
But even if he wasn't, to point such a finger at prominent conservatives and charge GOP leaders to do something about it is preposterous to say the least.
There is absolutely nothing that we currently know about the awful shootings Saturday or the alleged assailant that ties into anything Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, or anyone else said.
On the contrary, this is a disgusting game liberal media members play every time a violent event occurs that could possibly have a political motive. They're all quick to accuse the Limbaughs, the Becks, and Fox News regardless of any factual basis.
As such, it is the Krugmans, Moulitsases, and Jane Fondas of the world that are stoking hatred on a day when Americans should be mourning their lost.
Shame on all of them.

These people trying to stir up the base is pathetic. Why not wait? The guy had some left wing books in his favorites. Can we say he was from "the left"? When did Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck advocate violence? The only ones we hear are the ones on the left advocating armed revolution. And do not tell me the militia. Those guys are not conservative, they are anarchists. It really is infuriating the length these people will go to blame the conservative movement for everything that is wrong in the world just to be egged on the face the conservatives were right.
How about we blame the guy who shot the people?

In today's politically correct climate, it would be so insensitive to blame the poor misguided murderer. Therefore, we must blame Bush, Limbaugh, Palin, Beck, Boehner, Fox News, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, etc., etc. and then all evil conservatives everywhere. Then blame the Glock, the large capacity clip, global warming, the falling dollar, his mother, his teachers, his professors, the U.S. Army, but we can never blame the deranged leftwing piece of feces that planned this carnage beforehand - that would make us judgemental...because, when all is said and done, MSNBC will have Sgt. I heard a left wing blogger being interviewed on KABC radio in LA. He justified liberals using military jargon thusly; "You can say to liberals things like 'we need to target so and so' or put a bullseye on a district, because liberals wont interpret that the same as conservatives. We dont take that to mean break out your guns."
What an elitist ass. That's the mentality on the left, a major superiority complex.

Paul Krugman is already a lunatic, working for a yellow rag whose motto these days is "We print what even communist papers refuse to print". Does Krugman honestly believe this? If so, then he's more despictable than i had ever thought, and I'm on record for registering the utmost disgust at him and everything he stands for. This event is really, really showing the left for what it is -- empty, full of hate, and totally devoid of any shred of decency. Wake up America.

It's almost like they had the "template" written before the story even happened: Any tragedy that makes national news, any major event where lives are lost or people are injured --- all the leftwing pundits immediately come out and blame it on Palin, Beck, Limbaugh (and great gaia, why wasn't Coulter included -- are they slipping or something?). Even at the expense of what little respect these pundits already have, this maniacal obsession with marginalizing their enemies in the national eye by turning a such horrible tragedy into a political circus before most Americans are even aware of the actual facts will produce yet another backlash against the so-called mainstream media. For two years, he's been deriding the opposition to his policies as the enemy, making the most disparaging remarks, from his "bitter clingers" remark to "ride in the back". All the while allowing his minions to throw about charges of racism. Waging bitter class warfare, sowing the seeds of dissention, and watering them with his vile rhetoric.
Complicit in his evil habit of name calling is the media.

I don't know why, Prairie, but it never occurred to me before your comment that Obama's "enemies", are really me and my family. To have a President that would callously refer to the people of this great country as the enemy of their own country, especially when so many of us care so deeply about this great nation, is appalling. Political enemies shall always exist, but the American people should never feel like enemies of their own government, which is exactly where Obama's led us. He is dead wrong on all this of course, but I don't think he is intentionally trying to harm the country...Obama's and his party's ideologies are just 100% wrong, and that is why the Dems were beaten so badly in November, and with any luck at all, the American people will correct the mistake they made in 2008, and will vote Obama out of office in 2012.

It was an inexcusable remark, but, in fairness, I think you are broadening the context a bit more than warranted. Obama was referring specifically to Latino voters rewarding their friends and punishing their enemies--not to people generally who opposed the adiministration's entire agenda. That said, it was a very imprudent and improper comment, and he backed off of it afterwards agreeing that he should have said "opponents".
Jer

Who are the "enemies" of the Latino voters? Americans who call illegal aliens what they are, illegal, and don't want them to continue to pour, unrestrained and unpunished, over OUR border(s)? Well, if that's what the "enemy" is, then I guess I am one of them.

No one I know--even my Latino Democratic acquaintances--suuport the unrestrained pouring of illegal aliens across our borders. But there are other issues--such as path to citizenship measures--which they view to be rational steps but which still meet stringent opposition. Those politicians spearheading that opposition were probably the 'opponents/enemies' which Obama had in mind. Rhetoric tends to get hyperbolic during campaigns. I recall GWB coming to Georgia in 2002 and claiming Max Cleland wasn't interested in national security--an outrageous claim--which seemed totally out of character for Bush.
Jer
So, does the opposition to what American Latinos consider...
Submitted by PrairieSky on Sun, 01/09/2011 - 2:16am.
"rational steps" considering the amnesty of illegals, mean that those opposed are automatically "enemies" of Latinos? If so, I think that's ridiculous, and it's certainly not a helpful mindset for Latinos, legal or illegal, to have, and definitely will not help further their cause. Just because other Americans don't happen to agree with them on this issue, that does not make them their "enemy".
As for what Obama may or may not have meant when he said this, who knows...I'm taking what he said at face value. Given the outcry following this comment, he could have come back and clarified it, thereby explaining what he really meant, if he was misunderstood...He didn't, so I am assuming that he meant exactly what he said. You are right about heated hyperbole during a campaign...All sides tend to get caught up in it, unfortunately...That said, if Obama was misunderstood in this comment, he should have clarified it.

I was being somewhat sarcastic about laying the blame at our "supposed" President's feet.
Seriously, though, for these idiots like Krugman, Fonda, et. al. to immediately point at Palin, et. al. is just plain nuts.
The hypocricy is stunning, as I tried to point out in my post.
The fault lies inside the twisted mind of this Jared Loughton person. Perhaps his parents and teachers. Beyond that, we don't have the facts.

How is this country ever going to be governable when there are people, like Krugman, who make even an atrocity into something partisanly political? All bridges have now been burned, we have nothing in common, and as I have observed in the past, we, for all practical purposes, have a Cold Civil War on our hands. A war that shows every sign of being a permanent feature of our lives..

but this is the most despicable form of pandering there is. Liberals are seizing upon a tragedy -the mass murder and attempted murder of a large group of people, including a child- to attack a political opponent. This is the stuff of Pol Pot.
Regardless of this guys political leanings -which appear to be anarchist or liberal by his own words and choice of favorite videos and writings- it is beyond anything resembling reasonable, adult behavior to view such an event without emotion or remorse and instead revel in some perceived political advantage.
Disgusting. Anyone taking part in such attacks loses all credibility as a public figure looked upon to provide analytical political coverage. Krugman should be fired.

Liberals know, so well, that they cannot win against conservatism when it comes to ideas and rule of law and Constitution. Their knowledge of it is so apparent, and magnifies in times like these, when the moment the Congresswoman is shot, they're already looking for the political angle they can get out there as fast as possible. Facts don't matter. They run with their vitriol before any facts are gathered one way or the other, proving that facts don't matter. They know that getting vitriol out there quickly, that's what people hear first, and that's what people start to repeat to their friends. Even if later its found to be completely false, it doesn't matter, they've squirt the toothpaste out of the tube. That's the plan from the word go. They're far too predictable.
6 people are dead. A sitting Congresswoman is clinging to life, her life changed forever, by a lunatic. Families are mourning their dead, praying that those in the hospital will come out and begin to heal................and the liberal media gives not one rats a** about it. Their big concern is to make sure they get anything out to their viewers that will create a perception of "conservatives bad." Facts be damned. This election shellacked them and they view this shooting as their saviour. They went to press before there were any facts because they don't care. They don't care about the Congresswoman, they don't care about the dead, they don't care about the families, they don't care about the nation. They simply do...........NOT...........CARE about any of that. They care about ONE thing - pushing their Leftist, orgasmic collectivism, and will say anything to further it's cause. "NEVER let a crisis go to waste" is the mantra, and today, early and often, they've stuck to that as tightly as they ever have.

Yeah Greg- I mentioned that earlier. A Muslim goes on a shooting spree on Fort Hood and not only does the MSM not want to mention his obviously Arab name, but when they finally do, they immedately go on a "don't blame all Muslim's" narrative. In this case, however, they quickly get out the word that the guy was white and then shortly thereafter release his name. Based upon that, and one of the victims was a democrat, the MSM party line is that this is SP's and the Tea Party's fault. And then, they plug their ears like a 5 year old little girl blurting "nah nah nah nah, I can't hear you, nah nah nah nah" about al the subsequent evidence to the contrary.

I find it disgusting that while McCain and Beonner label today's tragedy as "evil" and "acts against humanity", Hussein Obama is quick to not to label this an act terrorism.
Clearly, today's violence is a result of terrorism, political terrorism, stirred up by the radical left and the Daily Kos. The fact that they try and point at Palin and Beck now is their poor attempt at covering such terrorism. At least OUR side uses the adjectives associated with terror, (evil, acts against free society, etc.), rather than cowardly skirt around it.

Typical cowards. They stoke up their followers to hate, then have the nerve to act surprised when those followers obey their calls to do violence.
Again I ask - who is it who is knocking down black conservatives and stealing their property? Who is it who is attacking Tea Party attendees and biting off their fingers? Who is it who is ordering his followers to 'argue and get in their faces'? Who is it ordering his followers to 'bring a gun to a knife fight'? Who is it saying 'we have our boot on their necks'? Who is it saying the 'constitution doesn't matter', and 'there ain't no rules we make it up'?

Pretty much, Jer. The youtube videos show him to be a very confused and disturbed individual. His points were completely incoherent and lacked sense. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that he is schizophrenic. I too am also not a doctor, but I minored in psychology in college, and he seems to have exhibited a number of the hallmarks of a schizophrenic. Did politics, from the left, the right or both, factor into his actions? It appears that to some extent the answer may be yes, but I think the main thing at work with this kid is that he's dangerously unbalanced. I don't think he's insane, because of the planning of his attack and the fact that he seems to have a history of some kind of contacting Rep. Giffords office, and of having "issues" with her and her positions. Time will tell of course, but whatever happens to this loon, he will never walk free again.

As soon as the first reports that a Democrat congresswoman from Arizona had been shot I knew in my gut that Republicans, Tea Party activists, Rush Limbaugh and others would be tagged as the ones who either pulled the trigger or were the cause of the trigger being pulled.
Why is it that this is so predictable these days that a regular guy like me knows exactly what the media will start spinning the moment it can que up the tape?
Sorry media, it appears that this killing spree was the work of an unbalanced 22-year old man whose primary ideology seems to have been centered on "grammar." That's it.

Palin's fault, Beck's fault, Limbaugh's fault. How short their memory is. Don't you people know ANYTHING? It's Bush's fault. That's been their whole panacea. Everything that's wrong with our country, regardless of its root cause, has been laid at the feet of George W. Bush. He's the one to blame. How ridiculous can it get? When FMR Gov. Palin came up with a " target list " of oppo-nents, it was a list of people to be unseated. She was saying, " Here's a list of people that we'd like to see get fired " , essentially to lose their jobs. To say that a political commentator is res-ponsible for someone's death is beyond slander or libel. It is insanity at its worst and most basic. This harkens back to the " comedians " who wish Rush dead. I seem to recall a comment someone made in reference to the entirely forgettable " Live and Let Die " . It dealt with the scene where Roger Moore shoved a gas pellet into Yaphet Kotto's mouth, and Kotto exploded. I believe that it was Chris Matthews who said ( correct me if I'm wrong ) , " I 'd like to see this happen to Rush " . As I see it, that's Matthews wishing to see Rush die. How sick is that? That's twisted, even by liberal standards. I would call on the White House to denounce statements like this, made by anyone, regardless of affiliation. But, I'm realistic enough to know that they won't. They've become so full of hate for anyone who doesn't toe the party line. It' s almost as though they're the " bitter clingers " , clinging to the last shreds of hatred for the Right. But then,.. that's just me.

I wouldn't say this is a liberal on liberal crime. Giffords seems to be close to a centrist, a republican who turned democrap, and earned the ire of DailyKos and MoveOn, sufficiently to have a target painted on her by them. She might even be to the right of John McCain (well there aren't many in the repub party who aren't, but still for a democrat that's still significant). So this would be a libnut on centrist democrat crime. There is also not a shred of evidence that this terrorist ever attended a tea party, listened to Fox, conservative talk radio, voted for McCain/Palin, O'Reilly, Beck, Limbaugh or others. Imagine if we found (as more likely) that he watched CNN, Schultze, Air America, read the NYSlimes, MSNBC, Chrissy Matthews, etc, and then conservatives claimed that because of all of that leftwing propaganda, liberalism and/or these talkshows, newspapers were to blame for those crimes? The libmedia would go beserk. But when the shoe is on the other foot (or being flung by the same liberals) they slander and libel conservatives and their radio/news personalities without shame or restraint.

The agenda is to shut down any opposing viewpoints. Rep. Giffords wasn't a darling of the left until she was the victim of an assassination attempt. They tried to get her out of office because she was a moderate "blue dog", pro-2nd Amendment, for strong border controls, etc.
It's only now that she's a left wing darling because this tragedy can be USED to further their vilification of the right and try to push teir agenda on the country.

Listen, you may be uncomfortable that all the hate speech on the right has come to a predictable outcome, but trying to shift the blame is the pathetic part here. Krugman is right, as is the Puma County Sheriff. Palin and others (Angle, Beck, Hannity) have made it acceptable to use violent rhetoric for political purpose and now try to hide from its result. Giffords called out Palin when she put a target on her and now Palin is running from it pulling down the website and claiming that these weren't bullseyes after the fact even though she tweeted that exactly. Homeland Security reported 2 years ago that domestic terrorism on the right is growing and the leaders of the GOP and its echo chamber at Fox and this website don't help.

RALL: The basic argument for me is that if you think the Democrats and the Republicans are equally useless, and you think the two-party system is essentially unreformable—in other words, they’re not going to allow a third party to challenge them in any meaningful way which I think is the case—they will not let a third party play fair, and if you think Obama’s not good enough and you’re not happy with what the ‘reform’ looks like, then you have to come to the same conclusion that I did.
