Time Mag Headline 'Holiday Blizzard: More Signs of Global Warming'

Noel Sheppard's picture

In today's "Everything Is Caused By Climate Change" segment, the folks at Time magazine offer a howler destined to start your morning off right with a chuckle: "Holiday Blizzard: More Signs of Global Warming."

The contents were even more hysterical:

One theory is that a warmer Arctic may actually lead to colder and snowier winters in the northern mid-latitudes. Even as countries like Britain — suffering through the coldest December on record — deal with low temperatures and unusual snow, the Arctic has kept on warming, with Greenland and Arctic Canada experiencing the hottest year on record. Temperatures in that region have been 5.4°F to 7.2°F (3°C to 4°C) above normal in 2010. As a result, the Arctic sea-ice cover has continued to shrink; this September, the minimum summer sea-ice extent was more than 770,000 sq. mi. (2 million sq km) below the long-term average, and the third-smallest on record. Snow may be piling up in midtown Manhattan, but the Arctic is continuing its long-term meltdown.

Shhh, wait - there's more:

The loss of Arctic sea ice helps accelerate the warming of the atmosphere in the far north, thanks to what's known as the albedo effect. White ice reflects sunlight into space, cooling the air, but when ice melts and is replaced with dark ocean water, the effect is reversed and more of the sun's heat is absorbed. As the Arctic air warms, it raises the altitude of discrete areas of high pressure, which can then alter wind patterns. This, in turn, can weaken the jet stream, allowing more cold air to seep out of the Arctic and into Europe and the eastern U.S. As the authors of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's recent "Arctic Report Card" put it, "There is evidence that the effect of higher air temperatures in the lower Arctic atmosphere in fall is contributing to changes in the atmospheric circulation in both the Arctic and northern mid-latitudes. Winter 2009-2010 showed a new connectivity between mid-latitude extreme cold and snowy weather events and changes in the wind patterns of the Arctic; the so-called Warm Arctic–Cold Continents pattern."

Ah - the famous Warm Arctic-Cold Continents trick. I hate it when that happens.

Then again, this might not be happening, for Time offered readers another theory if the first one seemed a tad convoluted:

Judah Cohen, the director of seasonal forecasting at the environmental research firm AER, has written that increasing seasonal snow cover in Siberia may drive extreme winter weather. Even as the planet has continued to warm and the Arctic has melted, seasonal snow cover has increased in Siberia, especially north of high Asian mountain ranges like the Himalayas. (As the climate warms overall, the atmosphere can hold more moisture, which can lead to more precipitation — falling as snow in places like Siberia that remain relatively cold.) All that Siberian snow creates a dome of cold air near the mountains, which bends the passing jet stream. Instead of flowing west to east, the jet stream moves in a more north to south fashion, carrying cold air south from the Arctic in the eastern U.S. and in Europe.

So, on the one hand, the cold and snow in America and Europe could be caused by the absence of ice in the Arctic.

If you're not buying that one, how about it's being caused by too much snow in Siberia?

Of course, if you like either of these theories, there's still some swampland available for sale in Florida that's getting even cheaper as those buying into Nobel laureate Al Gore's favorite money-making myth flee the southern states fearing it's going to be too warm to retire there.

Snicker, snicker.

There is a real illness here.

These Global Cooling/Global Warming/Global Change/Global Gimme Your Money people really need help.  No matter what, the weather proves their case and forget about ClimateGate.

Let me ask these morons this:

The Earth has gone through seven ice ages.  That's seven times transitioning from cold to hot and then back before man walked the planet and burned his first piece of coal.

So how is it that this time it is man that caused climate change?

Because They Are Just Smarter Than The Rest Of Us

Submitted by Wildcatter1980 on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 12:35pm.

These so-called people of science are just smarter than you and me, didn't you know that? ;-)

What puzzles me is how these so-called people of science can dismiss the fact that there is no "theory" of the climate and how it functions. They think that just because there are numerous "peer-reviewed" published articles saying basically that climate change is man's fault, they are satisfied that there is nothing more to discuss.

Also, in their eyes, they claim that because there are numerous climate change computer models, that that is a good thing. Why? Apparently because the different models shows just how open they are to all the possibilities. Of course, what they gloss over at best are such facts as most of the models they use are biased toward carbon having a significant influence on the climate IN THE MODELS and that the model's outputs are heavily impacted by the starting point and the starting assumptions of how inputs will vary over the model's run. They are loathe to admit that if there were a tested, accepted theory of the climate, there would be ONE climate computer model.

If they were truly people of science, first and foremost, they would welcome challenging questions. Indeed, they should encourage them from others and most importantly from themselves because the very essence of science is to challenge the hypothesis that man is a significant influence on the climate..

Take the money via grants or gifts out of supporting this or that theory and watch scientific opinions change. Scientists are like the rest of us and will promote almost anything for money always the money. I'll wager that a smart scientist can make either side of a debate sound believable. Too bad the rest of us trust them to be neutral arbitors of truth.

I have read many responses on here that denigrate believers in the Bible because it says the world is only 6,000 years old.  Wish we could get them to consider that far back.  For them, the world started in about 1880 with eugenics, mandatory health care, and suffrage as the hot issues.  Their global warming timeline ignores the farming of Greenland, etc, but they think they are the "timeless" ones.  They would be laughable if they weren't so dangerous to our well-being and lifestyle.

A Tale of Two Snow Jobs

Submitted by dbo on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 12:13pm.

The "global warming causes more severe winter weather" garbage is really just a variation of liberal socio-economic doctrine. Many moons ago when the country lived within its economic means and the United Sates was the most successful country in the history of the world, well-intentioned liberals and social engineers decided to create a shopping list of government programs to help "poor" people. Conservatives pointed out at the time that this would lead to large government debt that in turn would just lead to more "poor" people. Liberals would always state "What about the human deficit" and "If we invest in people they will become productive and we will have less debt". For years and years we always use to hear "What about the human deficit" and "If we invest in people we will have less debt". I don't hear them say that much anymore. Even far-left liberals like Obama now acknowledge the problem with debt.

So really, todays climate alarmists "global warming causes more severe winter weather" is just a variation of yesteryears social engineers saying "Spending money on government programs will lead to more wealth and less debt". It's the same agenda in a different era.

"global warming"

Submitted by sarge329 on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 12:16pm.

It' s a funny thing. Where I live, in flyover country, we're supposed to have cold winters with lots of snow. Last year, we had a hellacious snowstorm on Christmas Eve. Got over 12 inches in one night, with 40 mile per hour winds. This year, we were forecast to receive between 1 and 6 inches. We got a slight dusting. Why? Global warming? Um... , no. The jet stream had moved down from its normal location, which pushed the storms soaking Southern California further south. Instead of us getting snowed under, the Gulf Coast got the worst, followed by the Eastern Seaboard. Where am I going with this? If someone had figured out 1) how to generate enough energy to MOVE the jetstream and control climate, and 2) then done so, it would have been used as a weapon long before now. One other thing. In case anyone hasn't figured out how out of touch Algore has to be ( inventing the Internet/growing up on a tobacco farm/it depends on what your definition of " is " is ) , he is on record as being friends with the Westboro Baptist Cult, I mean, Church. They happen to be among his biggest supporters. There are pictures of Algore with Fred Sr. and Fred Jr. along with their spouses. Personally, I'm not sure which one is worse, Fred or Algore. I had heard that both the Southern Baptist Convention and the head of the Pri-mitive Baptists had disowned the WBC for their actions and statements. I'd even put down good money that the Wiccans would have nothing to do with them. I've been told that one of their tenets is " Whatever ye do, do no harm " .

I’m getting tired of that s*** Tired of that s***. I’m tired of f***ing Earth Day, I’m tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is there aren’t enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world safe for their Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don’t give a s*** about the planet. They don’t care about the planet. Not in the abstract they don’t. Not in the abstract they don’t. You know what they’re interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They’re worried that some day in the future, they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn’t impress me. Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet. Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The PEOPLE are f*****d. Difference. Difference. The planet is fine. Compared to the people, the planet is doing great. Been here four and a half billion years. Did you ever think about the arithmetic? The planet has been here four and a half billion years. We’ve been here, what, a hundred thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand? And we’ve only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over two hundred years. Two hundred years versus four and a half billion. And we have the CONCEIT to think that somehow we’re a threat? That somehow we’re gonna put in jeopardy this beautiful little blue-green ball that’s just a-floatin’ around the sun? The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through all kinds of things worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles…hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worlwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages…And we think some plastic bags, and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet…the planet…the planet isn’t going anywhere. WE ARE! We’re going away. Pack your s***, folks. We’re going away. And we won’t leave much of a trace, either. Thank God for that. Maybe a little styrofoam. Maybe. A little styrofoam. The planet’ll be here and we’ll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet’ll shake us off like a bad case of fleas. A surface nuisance. You wanna know how the planet’s doing? Ask those people at Pompeii, who are frozen into position from volcanic ash, how the planet’s doing. You wanna know if the planet’s all right, ask those people in Mexico City or Armenia or a hundred other places buried under thousands of tons of earthquake rubble, if they feel like a threat to the planet this week. Or how about those people in Kilowaia, Hawaii, who built their homes right next to an active volcano, and then wonder why they have lava in the living room. The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed, and if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new pardigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn’t share our prejudice towards plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn’t know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?” Plastic…a***ole. So, the plastic is here, our job is done, we can be phased out now."
"You cannot exaggerate about the Marines. They are convinced to the point of arrogance that they are the most ferocious fighters on Earth. And the amusing thing about it is that they are." --Kevin Keaney, US Navy chaplain, Korea 1951

What happened to snow as a thing of the past?

Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past

By Charles Onians

Monday, 20 March 2000

Britain's winter ends tomorrow with further indications of a striking environmental change: snow is starting to disappear from our lives.

Sledges, snowmen, snowballs and the excitement of waking to find that the stuff has settled outside are all a rapidly diminishing part of Britain's culture, as warmer winters - which scientists are attributing to global climate change - produce not only fewer white Christmases, but fewer white Januaries and Februaries.

[snip]

According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event".

"Children just aren't going to know what snow is," he said.

Say, isn't Viner one of the holy priests of global warming...er climate change? I wonder if it hurts when you turn yourself into pretzel shapes trying to explain the effects of whatever it is that they are calling it these days.

If we could just figure out a

If we could just figure out a way to shut all the ' Left Wing Loons ' of the world up for one year, the simple reduction of all that hot air rising up into the atmosphere, would be more than enough to save the world.

A picture is worth a 1000 claims

Submitted by Hunter12 on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 2:27pm.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the artic ice-cap on Christmas Eve and the same day two years ago.  Ice is not quite as extensive, but if the colors are indicative, it's denser at the poles.  Don't see any open seas depicted there.  My other question is how is giving $100 billion of our money to poor countries going to change the weather.  Re-activate the Siberian weather stations and start counting the actual data into the global climate equations instead of the 'warmists' using models to predict what it is.  We need to know the real state of the weather in order to properly prepare for the future, not rely on some guilted-out liberal scientist or some a$$hole who stands to make a fortune off of trading carbon credits.

Sooo.. what's causing record cold./snow in Africa/Australia/Peru

Submitted by Gary Hall on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 3:14pm.

...One theory is that a warmer Arctic may actually lead to colder and snowier winters in the northern mid-latitudes

Sooo then.. what silly theory is leading to colder and snowier winters in southern latitudes?

May 23, 2007 - THE icy weather of snow, hail and heavy rain that has swept across South Africa over the past few days has set 54 weather records.

3 Aug. 2010 -  Over 6 million fish and thousands of alligators, turtles, dolphins and other river wildlife are floating dead in numerous Bolivian rivers in the three eastern/southern departments of Santa Cruz, Beni and Tarija. The extreme cold front that hit Bolivia in mid-July [..]  Unprecedented: Nothing like this has ever been seen in this magnitude in Bolivia.

June 13, 2007 - Six thousands trucks stranded by snow blocked Andes tunnel. Heavy snow and wind storms that are punishing the Andes region have forced the closure of a key mountain highway and tunnel connecting Argentina with Chile..

June 16, 2010 - Around 600 African penguins, already an endangered species, have perished in a sudden cold snap on a South African island. The birds died in cold and wet weather over the past two days at Algoa Bay in Eastern Cape province.

September 21 2008  - S Africa faces 'winter wonderland'; snow, coldest September temps in recorded history...

And. how;'s the summer time going down under?

20 Dec 2010 - Australia normally experiences temperatures of 86F (30C) at this time of year, but the chances of a rare white Christmas have increased after plunging temperatures and snow swept across the east of the country. Freezing winds from Antarctica, blown up to Australia by a low-pressure system in the Southern Ocean, gave the country a taste of the conditions that are causing havoc across Europe.

Some 11 inches of snow fell at the ski fields in New South Wales, raising the prospect that parts of the country could experience a white Christmas.

How's that look?

Ah.. a white Christmas in the middle of summer down under in Australia; all caused by colder weather in the northern hemisphere which is caused by warmer weather. Now there's a theory for ya:

Warming: Global or Arctic?

Submitted by toenail on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 4:48pm.

Even if you accept the latest premise, the problem is no longer Global Warming.  It is now Arctic Warming.  Every other place on earth is freezing!

MWP Proves this theory wrong

Submitted by phryingphish on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 6:04pm.

If global warming is the cause of the blizzard then why was the midieval warm period (MWP) not known for blizzards? or Strong storms of any type? In fact the word "Blizzard" didn't come into use until near the end of the "Mini Ice Age" about 1800 give or take.

Individual weather events can't be used to judge climate change-unless they support AGW!

Right.....

Submitted by Cape Conservative on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 5:19pm.

Or...we can simply acknowledge that weather is - AS IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN - unpredictable!!!!! No No No - too much leeway there...after all, we in our gas-guzzling vehicles and as users of those nasty environmental-damaging incandescent light bulbs MUST be the cause of all negative weathers effects! If you doubt it, just ask the 'intelligencia' who abide only within the green movement - for they know all there is to know!!!!

Shall we all bow down in unison now? Where is my Algore statue?
