'Sarah Palin's Alaska' Rumored to Get Second Season on TLC

By Noel Sheppard | December 21, 2010 | 22:28

The BBC's Katty Kay might think Sarah Palin's reality show is a flop, but The Learning Channel is rumored to be talking to the former governor to get her to do a second season.

The gossip website Popeater reported Tuesday:

"3.066 million people turned in last week to see her episode with Kate Gosselin," a TLC insider tells me. "That is more people than are watching Bravo's 'Housewives' series or most other cable shows. For sure the network is doing everything it possibly can to convince Sarah to do another season, but at the end of the day it looks like it will all come down to money."

Just to remind readers, this is what Katty Kay said on this past weekend's "The Chris Matthews Show":

Well, one indication is that the ratings between her first show in Alaska and her second show fell by 50 percent, which suggests that she's not winning many converts. There are a lot of people who love her but trying to get those people who don't to stay with her is not going to be easy.

Nice call, Katty.

As for Palin, who Popeater believes is currently making more than $250,000 per episode, "when the show debuted to over 4.96 million viewers, insiders tell me she started talking about a new deal right away."

Popeater believes Palin could be looking at a significant raise to as much as $1 million an episode.

As Hot Air's Allahpundit noted Tuesday, "[A] documentary series following her around on the [campaign] trail would be fantastic TV and, a la 'Going Rogue,' would be a blockbuster thanks to interest from political junkies."

Indeed.

Submitted by Guttermouth's Return on Tue, 12/21/2010 - 11:07pm.

Well let's think about the timeline of things.  When will season 2 begin shooting, and when will it begin airing?  TLC won't sign a contract that might become a complete loss, which would be the case if they shot another season and Sarah Palin announced her candidacy prior to air.

Money is the prime objective for both.  What does Palin stand to make?  What does TLC have to make versus a loss due to an official office run?

Submitted by Radical1979 on Tue, 12/21/2010 - 11:20pm.

I agree that the primary motive for TLC is money.  For Palin, she has said one of the reasons she did the series was to publicize Alaska and showcase it.  Her other possible motives are money and publicity.  If Palin decides to run for president I'm sure that would trump those motives she has for doing the show.  Either way she comes out ahead.

TLC must either have assurances Palin won't run and they can air the show, or, they are banking on the increased exposure the possible run will give the show until she declares.  I doubt the show is expensive to film, relatively speaking.  And now that TLC no longer has Jon & Kate + 8, they really need something that people will tune into TLC for.  What else does TLC have to air?  It's not like the Duggar's are going to have some spicy scandal for people to shake their heads at.

I agree that Palin is doing this to show off Alaska.  Anyone proud of their home town would do the same, and she does it with enthusiasm and selflessness.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out...

Matthew most Presidents travel around campaigning and such.  I don't know if Obama has abused the Privilege that much.  Now his parties and date nights with the Wookie may be a different matter.  The idea he skipped out on the press conference due to the wookie being upset is kinda indicative of hi temperament.

I don't recall saying Obama abused anything,---

Submitted by matthewdean on Wed, 12/22/2010 - 1:15am.

let alone stating that he has gone overboard by being on the campaign soapbox too much.

To say that presidents use the bully pulpit as a campaign tool, or that most politicians spend more time trying to get re-elected than doing anything resembling putting in a worthwhile effort for the American people, would be stating the obvious.

I don't ride around in Obama's pocket, so I can't state anything about the man for sure (other than my visceral dislike for him), but it is my contention that he has abused two things for certain:

Mirrors, and the hopes his worshipers had for "Hope and Change" being a positive thing.

Only Olbie gets more viewers in a WEEK on MSNBC

Submitted by gopcongress on Wed, 12/22/2010 - 12:44am.

Only Olbie gets more viewers in a WEEK of shows than any other prime time host. Olbie averages around a million viewers a night, while Matthews gets about 550,000, which multiplied by 5 still comes to less than the 3 million that Sarah gets.

Not my cup of tea, but the show seems to be doing alright.  I think this is actually a pretty good example of PDS over at Client Nine Network.

Some troll on this thread was being a smart-azz and "wondered" what would happen if Sarah announced she was running for the presidency-would TLC need to pull the episodes?

My question:  will Mike Bloomberg need to sell off his interest in Bloomberg News when he announces?
